Dear Friends in Christ, On the Second Sunday of Lent, the Church invites us to reflect upon the momentous event of Christ's Transfiguration. As Jesus was transformed before His disciples and was revealed as the Son of God, so we, through our Lenten penance, can be transformed by God's grace. Jesus brought Peter, James and John up to Mt. Tabor so that they could be witnesses to the Transfiguration. It seems that they were not expecting to experience it. Yet, once they were there and were in the event they did not want to leave. Not only were they with Jesus, they were with the communion of saints, the Father and the Holy Spirit. On that mountaintop the Lord gave them a glimpse of heavenly joy. How much do we want Heaven? Lent is meant to help us want what Peter, James and John got a taste of on Mt. Tabor. Heaven is eternal bliss with the Trinity, the saints and the angels. In Heaven our needs are perfectly satisfied and we are secure in the Father's love for us. When we get there, we don't want to leave! Heaven, however, is not guaranteed anyone. We are given Heaven by God if our lives have been lived in preparation to receive it. We prepare for Heaven by living lives of love, showing this love in action to God and neighbor. Regular participation at Mass, Confession and absolution, daily decisions to act charitably, a habit of prayer, and seeking God's grace are all ways we can concretely prepare for Heaven. Mary and the saints also intercede for us so that we can receive Heaven. This is why we should frequently ask them for their prayers for us. When Jesus was transfigured before His disciples He showed them the Resurrection in advance. After foretelling His Passion and death, Jesus showed His friends that He would also rise. In this action He also showed them that if they suffered and died with Him they would also someday rise from death to new life. This promise Jesus makes to us through Baptism. As we reflect upon the meaning of the Transfiguration, let us allow the hopeful message of eternal life that it brings us guide our Lenten journey. In Christ, Fr. Michael
