‘Well I’m John, without a Y – don’t see the point in that’. Fine – that told me.

Then he asked what work was needed and why. My turn, I thought. I asked why he was so interested. ‘Because I’m the boss’. And so we jested for a while. And then I found out, when I wrote the cheque, it was for John! His dad is a lovely person, and I saw him with his arms around John in the digger teaching him to drive it, it really moved me. (not the digger!). And before he went he said ‘When can I come back?’ But his dad said ‘Don’t worry – school starts again tomorrow! What a shame! J

PuzzleBe the last one in the roomTwelve people are arranged in a circle. We’ll number them 1 to 12 in order going clockwise. Start counting at number 1 until you get to the fifth person in the circle, ie, number 5. That person leaves the room. Repeat the process, starting with the next person (number 6 for the next round) until there is only one person left. Note that it’s only people still in the circle that are counted in each round.

Question: Which position would you need to choose to be the last in the room?

Heating Oil Security.• Regularly check the oil level in the tank.

Note when you have a delivery.• Install security lighting; this could be sensor

or dusk-to-dawn lighting which will highlight the tank and area around it.

• Lock the tank using a good-quality padlock.• Position tanks in a well-overlooked area.• Consider fencing around the tank making

it less visible.Report any suspicious activity to the police immediately on 101 and in the case of an emergency dial 999. Officers at Holt can also provide more crime prevention advice including a crime prevention survey. Contact 101 or [email protected]

When a 6.5 year-old and a65 year-old get together...I called in a contractor to work on my place (after recently moving in) to remove dangerous containers, etc, that I had found on the property. He brought his son with him. He is the 6.5 year-old person. I didn’t think he should be around the dangerous stuff, so I found some frozen Mars bars and Coke and lured him away.

Well; I got interviewed... ‘What’s your name?’ I said ‘Jayne, with a Y in it’. He said

EditiorialMy first edition of this newsletter just so happened to coincide with the start of the debate about whether or not to approve a wind turbine in Bodham. My opinion has wavered but one thing that I have felt I should do is understand the truth behind the options.

A friend in our village has sourced all sorts of material about this and it looks at the bigger picture. Whether we like them or not, it would appear that we should approve such structures. Here is the reasoning.

Big businesses make decisions that have enormous implications if they get them wrong so they employ organisations such as Bxxx to investigate and come up with facts that are in no way influenced by political/lobbying motive. They present their findings on energy as follows: But there is a bigger picture re biodiversity, resouces being used up

Weekday Holy Eucharist You are most welcome to join us every Thursday morning at 10 am in Matlaske Church for Holy Eucharist

From the RectoryThe Rectory Matlaske NR11 7AQ 577455 (any day but Wednesdays)

My dear friendsIf you didn’t manage to get to Hempstead Arts Exhibition & Sale you missed a really outstanding event. The exhibits were of a very high standard and showed just how much artistic talent we have hereabouts. Although the exhibition was for church funds it was doubly successful because there was so much help and support from the whole community. It is good to see the Church and the wider Hempstead family creating such a wonderful combined effort. Heartfelt thanks to you all.

Our friends at St Michael’s, Plumstead celebrate their Patronal Festival with Choral Evensong on Sunday, 29th September at 4:30 pm. The preacher will be Her Majesty’s Chaplain of the Savoy. Do please come and swell the ranks; it will really encourage our very small but faithful congregation at St Michael’s.

Do you like singing? Nothing too ‘high folutin’! You Do. Then please give me a ring if you’d like to give it a try. The Advent Carols and the Christmas Carol Service will soon be upon us and we really could do with a few more voices. Go on! You’ll be made most welcome to join the Benefice Choir.

God bless you all

interests me because the parish boundaries of Baconsthorpe, North Barningham and Bodham all meet in the centre. This suggests to me that it is a site of some antiquity and possibly importance. But I have hunted high and low and cannot discover anything about its history. Can anyone else do better? The three definitions at the top of the page I found by putting ‘Hell Hole’ into my search engine and the only other entry I could find was:

‘A tree-filled hole, possible an old quarry, situated at the exact junction of three parishes. People on Poor Law funds had to work in the parish quarry: they might have given it this name.’ Bertie Harmer

Before the Baconsthorpe, North Barningham and Bodham Klu Klux Klan start sharpening their sickles and putting on their hoods to come down here and indulge in a good ole little bit of lynching, I would like to make clear I am talking about Hell Hole.

Many of you will now be thinking: ‘What’s the old fool talking about?’ Patience. Hell Hole is a large and deep pit hole which

Home LoverIt was dull in MayWhen I went astrayAnd visited friends down Devonshire way.I didn’t careFor so far from YareAnd only politeness held me there! But I went to CleyIn early JulyWhen wild rose blushed and the tides were high. The blackbird pipedIn the inland dellsBy Walsingham, Warham and Wighton and Wells. It rained in JuneWhen I went to Troon(They said it was something to do with the moon). The chilly sceneWas all grey and green,My only comfort to say I’d been! So I went to CleyIn early JulyWhen cattle by the Glaven ’mid meadowsweet lieAnd scent of elderIs weaving spellsRound Sheringham, Salthouse and Stiffkey and Wells. I’ll always rememberNorth Wales in SeptemberWith sepia peaks in cloud-topped splendour.I looked with aweupon all I sawAnd my heart fled back to a marsh-fringed shore! So give me CleyIn early JulyWhen mallow in Morston is banked waist high. And oh! for the taleThe wild tern tellsBy Brancaster, Burham and Blakeney and Wells! Joan Watson-Cook

Dolly GeeA large congregation of family and friends gathered at St Mary’s Church on 30th Aug 2013, for the funeral service of Dolly Gee who, before moving to Holt, had lived in the village for many years. In her younger days, as well as raising her family, Dolly worked in the local fruit fields picking strawberries, blackcurrants and gooseberries. Her baking skills were also in much demand in the wider community; especially the delicious cakes she made. Later she became assistant cook at the village school, until its closure in 1983. Before failing health prevented, Dolly was a keen member of the Carpet Bowls Club and was by all accounts an accomplished player. We send our condolences to Steven and Pat, Sally and Richard and their families.

Holy BaptismOn 1st Sept 2013 at St Mary’s Church – Harry Peter, baby son of Emma and Paul Marsh.

CongratulationsWe send best wishes for their future happiness to Laura Peck and Stuart Harper. They were married at St Mary’s Church on 14th Sept 2013.

Selbrigg PondFinally, after a few last-minute delays the piling work to replace Selbrigg Pond’s retaining wall is under way. The work is scheduled to last three months. A temporary access point has been created near to the public footpath bridge, but this will be removed and road bank restored at the end of the programme. The second phase, for which planning permission is about to be sought is the dredging of the pond itself. For this various habitat surveys have been conducted over the spring and summer. May I thank everyone for their understanding during this initial phase. Photos and further details are on Selbrigg.com website. FF

Resounding SuccessHempstead Arts Exhibition and Sale was an enjoyable and successful event. Thank you to everyone who came; those that helped with mounting the exhibition; and with the stewarding and refreshments. Particular thanks go to the artists who allowed us to share their varied work and helped us set up and run the event over the weekend. A big, big surprise is that, all together, over £1560 was raised for church funds.
