GALHAMPTON PLAYGROUP

The Galhampton Playgroup is run by a voluntary committee of parents and has charitable status.

The staff are friendly, caring and enthusiastic and have many appropriate qualifications including

National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in childcare at different levels.

We also have a Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) Fiona Hooper, so every child's learning

attributes can be catered for. Galhampton Playgroup has been open for over 30 years, the first 27

years being in the village of Galhampton however due to reconstruction to the building the

playgroup moved to Sparkford Village Hall.

At Galhampton Playgroup we are firm believers in the value of learning through play and hands-on

experience. As a result, although some activities may be geared towards one particular area of the

curriculum such as letter recognition, the majority are cross-curricular. We have a secure building

and outside play area and use both where possible. Activities are run by highly motivated staff with

a fun and enthusiastic attitude.

We encourage parents to get involved with their child's learning, this is expressed with our open door

policy and parents are always welcome to come in. We also involve parents by holding various

events:

Pets Week, Dads Week, Regular Trips, Supervised Cooking activities, Play Bus,

and Much More

Don't just take our word for it, for open evenings and taster days, contact us now.

Countess Gytha New school buildings underway The Met Office said summer 2015 was cooler and wetter than either of the two previous summers, but notwithstanding the heavy rain showers the construction works have kept to time. The steel portal fame has been finished and the safety netting, temporary roof handrail and access stair towers have been installed for safe access to the roof. The 55t mobile crane returned to site along with a team of roofing tradesmen to install the roof sheets, insulation and roof lights over the classrooms. In parallel with this we have prepared the ground floor slab in readiness for its concrete topping which when completed will be a major piece of work accomplished. Externally we have formed the sports pitch using topsoil from the site and constructed the overspill parking area. You can follow how the building is progressing via the blog on the school website at: http://www.countessgythaprimary.co.uk/ or on the construction firm BAM Facebook page search on: BAM - New Countess Gytha Primary School If there is something you particularly want to know about or wish to support the new school with then use the contact details on the website or pop into the office. Please note that despite repeated requests, both last and this summer, there remains a persistent

problem with dog waste not being picked up and disposed of at the Cricket Ground. Given the

flourishing youth section of the club and continued senior use of the ground this is an unwelcome

situation. The Parish Council has therefore taken the decision to impose a ban on dogs from the ground

for the duration of the cricket season, being from 1st April until 30th September each year.

For those who have cleared up after your dog/s - thank you.

The Parish Council has received two enquiries one regarding a possible railway station and new request

stop and the other regarding the redevelopment of the Haynes Publishing site. Both are at the early

stages of initial consultation with a view to gaining more information.

The next meeting Parish Council Meeting will be held on Monday 5th October 2015, at 8.00pm in the

Parish Hall.

Queen Camel Tuesday Group

SEPTEMBER 2015

Our September meeting was a learning curve. Jane Chapman; a children's book illustrator, came to talk to us about her work, and brought along a lot of her books, drawings and paintings to show us. We were then given pencils and paper and we were all told to follow instructions. We copied the shapes Jane drew on a flip chart, and were then told to turn our attempts upside down. Much to our surprise we discovered we had all drawn a very recognizable elephant!! One lady in particular was delighted as she said she had never drawn anything recognizable in her life!. We went on to draw dinosaurs, penguins, tractors and diggers, monkeys, sharks, and puffer fish. It was great fun. Jane had brought some of her books and we were each given a book to take home.......... Jane suggested that we should go home and do lots of drawings to send to our grandchildren to stick on their walls! The variety of our meetings and the companionship one gets on a monthly basis (not to mention the lovely cakes,) for a very modest subscription, makes belonging to the Tuesday Group a great pleasure. In October we are not having a formal meeting as we are ‘jaunting off to have a private viewing of the Shoe Museum in Street. The Tuesday Group meets in the Queen Camel Memorial Hall on the first Tuesday of each month, at 10.00am. If you want any more information about our activities, please call Pat Champion on 01963 32264 or Marion Chapman on 01963 220741.

We seem to be suffering from an ever increasing number of unsolicited telephone calls

getting – eight in one day seems to be our record whilst 3 or 4 is normal and there is no

effective remedy. It is obviously up to each of us how we deal with them but replacing

the receiver and not getting involved would be the best solution all round.

The papers continually report more deterioration in the support we are getting from our

local police forces which ever increasingly underlines the need for each and every one

of us to increase our own security. The darker nights are almost upon us and as we settle

down of an evening we need to be ever vigilant to the unscrupulous people whom will

try to enter your property or to walk off with things from the garden & garages at our

homes.

Make sure you have security lights fitted and that they are fully working. Keep all

garages and sheds locked and make sure you have packed away all your summer items

from the garden. Neighborhood watch exists to try and provide cooperation and

backup within the community. Should you consider joining us please feel free to contact

me at the number below or one of your local Contacts.

It only costs you £1 to join and become involved in everything we do. We help local

groups and protect our community. We have raised money for the local Air Ambulance

and many other causes. We have also raised money to provide the defibrillators in both

Sparkford & Weston Bampfylde.

We have one located in Sparkford at the Hazlegrove Service Station & one located in

the Ex Telephone box in Weston Bampfylde. These are for emergency use 24hrs 7 days a

week. We have several residents who have been trained to use these. They are a valid

tool for the assistance of resuscitating our loved ones & friends with these we reduce the

risk of losing them in the time it takes for the emergency services to arrive.

Join the fight against flu – book an appointment today For most of us getting flu means a miserable experience with a few days off work or days in bed that we recover from– 750,000 of us will visit the doctor with the illness. But for some, flu can be very serious leading to life changing complications, such as permanent disability or death. The best way to protect yourself and your family is to get the flu vaccine before it starts circulating in the community and particularly those people for whom the infection can cause serious complications, like pregnant women and infants. It is easy to get a flu jab. The vaccine is free for:

• those aged 65 years and over • those aged six months to under 65 in clinical risk groups (eg, chronic asthma, heart

and liver disease, diabetes) • pregnant women • all two-, three- and four-year-old children • all children of school years 1 and 2 • carers • health and social care workers with direct patient contact (speak to your employer. • Contact your GP or local pharmacy to find out how to receive your free flu vaccination

or visit nhs.uk/flu for more information

Martin Witcher We have just received the sad news that Martin Witcher, our organist at St Barnabas, Queen Camel died suddenly on 18th August. Martin was a brilliant organist we have been blessed with his talent for many years. He is also known to other congregations as he has played regularly for Together at 10 and also for many of our weddings and funerals across the benefice. Martin and his wife Rumi were married at St Barnabas. Their daughter Katie has on occasion accompanied her father and is learning to play the organ herself. Martin will be greatly missed. Please hold Martin’s wife Rumi and daughter Katie in your prayers at this very sad time.

Bishop’s Message – OCTOBER 2015 RESPONDING TO THE REFUGEE CRISIS A pastoral letter from the Bishop of Bath and Wells We have all been shocked and upset by the recent pictures from Calais, Hungary and – most distressingly – the beach in Turkey where the body of little Aylan Kurdi was washed ashore. It feels as if there has been a breakdown in the human race’s ability to care for its weakest members. While the big picture of politics and civil war perplexes us, the individual tragedies go straight our hearts. We all want to do something. The plans announced by the Prime Minister relate only to bringing to Britain refugees from the camps established in the countries surrounding Syria. With the vast numbers of refugees looking for support in Europe, I echo Archbishop Justin’s comment that this is a slim response. There is human need on our doorstep as well. The United Kingdom could and should do more as a nation to help our European partners as they struggle to deal with all this. You may want to write to your MP about this. Our churches have already been asking what they can do to help, and collections of money and goods have already been taking place on a more or less ad hoc basis. We see practical needs, and it is natural to want to help. However, rather than start up lots of small-scale collections, I would encourage churches to work through established agencies who are already working in the field. These agencies have the skills and experience to do this work – whether that be at Calais or in Jordan, the Lebanon, or Syria itself. As regards the people at Calais, the UK and France are well-resourced countries. The agencies on site can buy what they need if they have the money: collecting and delivering supplies may not be the most helpful thing unless it is known there are resources to deliver and distribute them fairly. Some people have already expressed their desire to open their home to a refugee family. offering rooms or meals. This is a generous and hospitable gesture. The time is not yet right for this to happen – we will have to wait for the Government’s relocation scheme to be worked out. When refugees arrive, churches will be in the forefront of those offering assistance, and we will need to do this well. It will not be an easy task. There will be issues of language, dealing with vulnerable and traumatised people, finding suitable schools, and so on. Again, we will do best to work with agencies who know what they are doing.
