EditiorialMy first edition of this newsletter just so happened to coincide with the start of the debate about whether or not to approve a wind turbine in Bodham. My opinion has wavered but one thing that I have felt I should do is understand the truth behind the options.

A friend in our village has sourced all sorts of material about this and it looks at the bigger picture. Whether we like them or not, it would appear that we should approve such structures. Here is the reasoning.

Big businesses make decisions that have enormous implications if they get them wrong so they employ organisations such as Bxxx to investigate and come up with facts that are in no way influenced by political/lobbying motive. They present their findings on energy as follows: But there is a bigger picture re biodiversity, resouces being used up

Police ConcernsDuring the past couple of weeks we have seen a rise in vehicle crime, in particular thefts from vehicles. A small number of these have been opportunistic thefts of handbags from insecure cars in car parks along the north coast beauty spots. The most significant crime is the theft of tools from the back of vans or other vehicles. One method is to drill the door lock; other methods include bending back the door, smashing windows or otherwise breaking the lock. These are mainly overnight but can be any hour. Catalytic converters have also been stolen from vehicles that are higher off the ground, such as four-wheel drive, people carriers and transit-type vans. Officers are currently employing a number of tactics to identify and apprehend those responsible and we would be interested to hear from anyone who may have information.Crime prevention tips include:• Private vehicles should be kept in a well-

secured garage where possible, and if no garage is available, in a well-lit public area.

• Vehicles can be parked in such a way as to make access to the catalytic converter difficult or parallel with another vehicle if you own one.

• Commercial vehicles should also be kept in a locked building or compound.

• Use alarms, lighting and CCTV to deter thieves.

• Mark your catalytic converter – etching the part and spraying with heat-resistant paint. Contact your local crime-reduction officer on 101 for more information.

Please keep your eye out for criminals or suspicious activity and be very security conscious. If you see something suspicious please call police on 101.

Police Street SurgeriesMeet your local police community support officer (PCSO) to discuss any issues in confidence. Dates and times are advertised on local notice boards/bus shelters and, from time to time, in this newsletter.

4Continued next month

Time has again proven my wife right (aren’t they always?) I should have bought a digital camera six years ago, I should have recognised the advances in things like ipads that are able to show the night sky and locate the stars and planets. Maybe now was the time to buy a fully computerised GOTO telescope? I set up my trusty 30 year old mechanical telescope one last time. The wooden tripod legs that I had so lovingly varnished all those years ago still glistened in the fading light. The lumbering black metal mechanical mount still guided the telescope to those distant stars and planets, most of the time, more or less. The old girl was showing her age, she has been a loyal friend all these years but was now barely working, it was time to say goodbye. I packed her away in the footlocker one last time and whispered a sad farewell.I ordered my new computerised telescope and was delighted when it arrived, it looked so smart, all chrome and white painted aluminium. I set it up and keyed in the basic data it needed, and was ready to go. When it was dark enough I placed the telescope on its concrete base, pointed it north and switched on the hand controller. After that all I had to do was enter the date and time, line it up with two stars the computer selected and that was it, ready to go in 2 mins. compared to 30 mins. with the old one. I decided to try out ”Guided Tour, Tonight’s Best” and pressed GOTO. With a busy whirring noise off it went, swivelling the telescope until it aligned on Jupiter and gave a friendly little beep to say it was ready. Jupiter was dead centre in the eyepiece, its dark bands clearly visible and four of its largest moons. Satisfied, I pressed a button and off it went again whirring and buzzing and within a few seconds gave another little beep. This time it had selected the Orion Nebula, one of my favourite astronomical objects and it looked amazing. After that it went to the Perseus Double Cluster, a beautiful sight, billions of stars clustered together like diamonds on black velvet. I was convinced, such ease of use, I should have bought it years ago.Technology is a wonderful thing, it has its place in modern society, but I think it also has its downside, it can make us lazy. I learned astronomy the hard way, using star charts and books, I know what I am looking at and I know my way around the night sky. I remember the thrill of finding those first distant galaxies and the sense of pride it gave me that began a lifelong fascination with the stars. The current generation of young astronomers only need to know how to press a button to see the wonderful sights the heavens have to offer, it is so easy for them. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Will they be inspired for a lifetime or just a few minutes?

Molly on the MarshDear FriendsAs I write, Molly our golden retriever lies resting at my feet. We have been out on the marshes at Morston where amazing smells seem to abound for dogs. When we walk there, it takes only moments before the sights and sounds of that wild landscape tune me to the rhythm of this amazing earth. I can hear the distant sea pounding on the shingle of the Point... and I am left wondering at the distance it has travelled and to which in a few hours it will retreat. It seems to echo our own journeys. Some of the stones on the shore look worn thin by their bashing: but in being so, there are intriguing shapes and hues criss-crossing each one.

I asked a shop-keeper yesterday if he ever has a break – a holiday. He smiled. ‘Whatever would I need one of those for?’ he said. ‘I live in a beautiful place. I’m my own boss. What more would I want?’ His journey may have been long, focussed and hard work, but I was struck by his thankful attitude. It reminded me this morning as Molly and I walked together, to give thanks to God for the broad skies, the fertile earth, the ability to hear sea and birdsong – and for my own journey to this point.

There is something profoundly holy about living in thankfulness for our place, our purpose and for the people we love. With my prayer for your own journeys – and for your journeys as congregations of disciples in transition,

The Revd Canon Fiona Newton (who is taking the service on 21 September)

Invitation from the Bishop of LynnThe Bishop of Lynn invites all parishioners (whether regular churchgoers or not) to meet him in Baconsthorpe Village Hall at 7:30 pm on Thursday, 25th September 2014 when he will outline various options currently being considered by the Diocese about the future of our Benefice. Everyone who is interested will be welcome to hear what he has to say. Refreshments.

FêteDespite heavy rain on Sunday morning and further warnings, we were given a two-hour window of dry weather enabling most of the usual activities to take place. As a precaution Teas and Cakes were moved to the Village Hall creating something of a two-centre fête.

Annie and Richard Brooks were able to complete a successful dog show despite there being no public address system, congratulations to the winners! Books, plants and produce, bric-a-brac, tombola and side shows carried on regardless with much-reduced but enthusiastic visitors.

The high point of the afternoon was the grand draw which took place in the village hall where the winner of the giant hamper put it up for auction adding to an all-time record profit for the draw of £1147. Well done Robin Carver! and thanks to all those that bought tickets.

Those that visited the church were given a great treat with Charlie Inglis’ wonderful exhibition of butterfly photographs.

The total profit for the afternoon, despite the difficulties, reached a grand total of £2256 (£2605 in 2013) which will be divided between All Saints’ Church and Village Hall.

Our thanks to all who gave of their time and energy to make the 2014 Hempstead Fête a success. We all look forward to next year’s event! MT

Memories from childhood.   My grandfather died just before I was born, but I was brought up with numerous stories of life in his household.   My father was the youngest of nine, living with domestic servants in a big vicarage.   Grandfather had a large parish in urban Southampton.   Many of his flock were illiterate sailors, so he read their letters to them, and drafted the replies.   In late nineteenth century Social Services and the like hardly existed, and often he was the only educated man they could talk to, so he spent much time dispensing wisdom on all sorts of topics.   Things were black or white, with no time for shades of grey.   We may now disapprove, but then the alternative was naked despair.   Nowadays it is all so different, particularly for parsons.   Daviid Durst

DefibrillatorThere are now several people in the village who have completed a basic life saving course. They also found it beneficial to visit the old phone box and see how access to the defibrillator is gained after dialling 999 and look at the defibrillator. Comments were that in a stressful situation knowing how to get to the defibrillator will remove some of the unknowns.

Anyone who would like to be shown the phone box and defibrillator please phone Jim 577521. It may be advisable to access the defibrillator, if advised by the emergency services, even if the patient is just experiencing mild chest pains or pains in the arms. JS

A special ‘Thank You’ to Marion for acting as Treasurer for the day and counting all the money afterwards! Matlaske Church has to have repair work carried out on the North roof so some of the fête proceeds will be set aside as a start to the funding of that project. Once again ‘Thank You’ to Thomas and Amelia Courtauld for hosting and organising the event in Barningham Park. DW

Mystery Solved! At Red House Farm, Hempstead, there is a tablet by Eric Gill, famous and notorious sculptor and typographer of the early twentieth century, which reads:

To the honoured memory of

SAMUEL FOWLERfor forty-five years keeper on the Hempstead Estate

Born Feb 1830 – Died Oct 1906

In testimony of their regard of some of those to whom he was ever a faithful servant and a pleasant companion

John Henry Gurney, Hugh, Ford, George, Cameron and Theodore Barclay, S Gurney, Edward N and

Francis W Buxton, Andrew Johnstone

The Gurney’s, Buxton’s and Barclay’s of the nineteenth century were not exactly in the avant-garde of the artistic world – how is it that they employed an up-and-coming sculptor of whom they had probably never heard?

At the Lettering Arts Centre at Snape there is currently an exhibition of the works of MacDonald Gill (the less well-known younger brother of Eric) who designed the standard gravestone for all the British dead in both wars (there is one in Hempstead churchyard). It is stated that he ‘studied lettering under the celebrated calligrapher and type designer Edward Johnstone’.

Pennies then dropped. In the Hempstead Village History it is recorded that the tablet was ‘commissioned and designed by Edward Johnstone for his brother Andrew’. Andrew was a Buxton son-in-law but nothing was known of his brother Edward who, as it now turns out, was the father of modern lettering and able to influence an important commission for one of his pupils – Eric Gill. Mystery solved!

The Gurney Hempstead Estate left several memorials. They built the Mill; three dams above it including Selbrigg Pond; built a famous duck decoy on the Pond; and, at the Red House, provided a honeymoon hideaway for Elizabeth Fry (recently pictured on the £5 note). RC

Churches Cycle Ride

This year’s Norfolk Churches Trust (NCT) Sponsored Bicycle Ride takes place on Saturday, 13th of September and should have something for everyone. If people want to explore a new part of the county and take the opportunity of so many churches being open then they can now get sponsorship to drive round (new this year). If they wish to test their endurance then they can aim to be in the top ten for the number of churches visited, either walking or cycling, and we will post it on the ‘Wall of Fame’ on the website. If they want a fun day out with the family then they can download some activity sheets from the website and take part in the photographic competition.

The Prince of Wales, who is patron of the NCT, has kindly agreed to sign a certificate that will be given to the individual who raises the most money in this year’s Bike Ride. If getting sponsorship makes people feel uncomfortable then we suggest sponsoring oneself or using ‘Just Giving’ which makes it all much easier (see the website for details). Please encourage family and friends to take part and be inventive about how they raise money. You can even raise money by volunteering to act as a steward in one of the churches and seeking sponsorship for the hours on duty. The more people who explore our wonderful churches the more they will appreciate them and want to save them for the future. Please visit the website www.norfolkchurchestrust.org.uk/sponsored-bike-ride for more information.

The money people raise is split between the church of the participant’s choice and

the NCT to provide grants for repairs to parishes struggling to meet the high costs of essential repair work to keep our churches beautiful and open.

Pump up your tyres, pack a picnic and plan a route from your own door around some of the most beautiful churches in Britain. This can even be done from the web site – here’s an example: mapmyride.com/routes/view/506899228

You can get a sponsorship form from your parish representative or the website www.norfolkchurchestrust.org.uk/sponsored-bike-ride where you can also find out more about the day.
