Service of Worship
August 6, 2017 at 10:00 am
Welcome! Thank you for joining us today for worship.
This morning we celebrate the Eucharist (the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, or
Holy Communion). We celebrate the Eucharist by intinction (dipping the bread into
the cup). We also provide a gluten-free alternative, so that all may freely partake.
After receiving the elements you may come to the railing to receive a blessing
from the pastors.
Prayer of Preparation
I want Jesus, to walk with me;
I want Jesus to walk with me;
all along my pilgrim journey,
Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me.

Greeting Our God with Joy
Call to Worship Elder Jeanette Nemcek
One: Young, Old, Black, Brown, White, Gay, Straight and Trans, by all the
labels the world would give us, we come this day as one, to worship
the God of all together.
All: We are gathered to celebrate. Our soul and mind, our faith is one.
One: We are baptized in one baptism, and eat of one bread and drink of
one cup.
3
All: We confess one name above all names, who frees us from the
tyranny and hatefulness in this world.
One: We have a mutual longing for a world where the color of skin or the
person you love do not dictate basic rights.
All: We are one people, united – despite visible or invisible differences
– by our faith in Christ.
One: Together, we strive against any power that would tear us apart.
All: God of grace, may our hearts be free to faith and praise!
* Opening Hymn No. 307 “God of Grace and God of Glory”
Renewing Our Relationship with God
Prayer of Confession Shannon Headen
God of grace and God of glory, save us from resignation to the way
things are. Our fears and prejudices run deep. Too often we can only
see our own point of view. We stick with those who are like us,
rarely venturing outside our comfort zones. We do not hear those
who seek justice. We blame those who are suffering and in need,
instead of standing by them. We deny the power of your gospel to
unite us with those who are different from us. Truthfully, O God, it’s
easier that way. Then we don’t have to change. But today, O God,
we want you to get through to us. Give us eyes to see and ears to
hear. Free us all from our suffocating isolation. Open us to new
possibilities of life for all of your people, that we might breathe
again your life-giving Spirit, the source of all grace and compassion.
Through the reconciliation power of Christ, Amen.

Scripture Lessons: Genesis 32: 22-32
The same night he got up and took his two wives, his two maids, and his
eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. He took them and
sent them across the stream, and likewise everything that he had.
Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. When
the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the
hip socket; and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him.
Then he said, “Let me go, for the day is breaking.” But Jacob said, “I will
not let you go, unless you bless me.” So he said to him, “What is your
name?” And he said, “Jacob.” Then the man said, “You shall no longer be
5
called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans,
and have prevailed.” Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.”
But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him.
So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face,
and yet my life is preserved.” The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel,
limping because of his hip. Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat
the thigh muscle that is on the hip socket, because he struck Jacob on the
hip socket at the thigh muscle.
Psalm 17
Hear a just cause, O LORD; attend to my cry; give ear to my prayer from
lips free of deceit.
From you let my vindication come; let your eyes see the right.
If you try my heart, if you visit me by night, if you test me, you will find no
wickedness in me; my mouth does not transgress.
As for what others do, by the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of
the violent.
My steps have held fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped.
I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me,
hear my words.
Wondrously show your steadfast love, O savior of those who seek refuge
from their adversaries at your right hand.
As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake I shall
be satisfied, beholding your likeness.

Luke 10: 23-24
Then turning to the disciples, Jesus said to them privately, “Blessed are
the eyes that see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and
kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what
you hear, but did not hear it.”

Prayers of the People
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine
is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Prayer after Communion
Loving God, at the mystery of your table we are made one body,
reconciled as brothers and sisters, united in prayer and service.
Being fed and fortified, send us out with grace and imagination to
live together in unity, proclaiming Christ’s love and justice. In Jesus’
name we pray. Amen.

Notes & Announcements The Rev. Carol Wedell is today’s preacher. After seminary and a year of
chaplaincy training, Carol was ordained as a Presbyterian pastor (PCUSA)
over 34 years ago. She has served churches in Ft Wayne, IN and in the
greater Cleveland area, most recently as pastor of Church of the Western
Reserve in Pepper Pike. She and her husband Mark (an elder and usher
here at FHC) have three adult children: a son who lives in the Cleveland
area with his wife, and another son and daughter who can both happily be
reached within a day’s drive! However, they aren’t truly empty nesters, as
the dog and two cats think that they are children.
Today’s music: Thanks to today’s music leaders: Beth Garrett, Grant
Heineman, Carl Jenks, Shelly Jesberger, Elizabeth Shaw and Sally Wile.

who lost her battle with cancer a year ago today.
