About Our Worship“Jesus answered [the devil],‘It is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him alone shall you serve.’” Mark 4:8

Here at FPC, our worship is rooted in a long history of church tradition. We seek worship that conforms to the Word of God. Since Holy Scripture directs our worship service, we use choirs and various instruments as a regular part of our liturgy. We believe our use of the organ, orchestral instruments and choir is more conducive to the reverence of our holy, transcendent God. In many of today’s churches, worshippers are looking for more “emotional or meaningful” music. They want music that “pumps you up,” and make you feel more emotionally charged about Christ. This emotional response is considered to be true spirituality. This approach to worship, however, is contrary to our biblical understanding of the Holy Spirit, and true spirituality. We believe that true spirituality is not a function of emotion, but rather a function of the Word and sacraments and our response to them. True spirituality is not subjective, but objective. True spirituality is not to be primarily found in a song but in the means of grace. While we will never achieve the perfection of God’s heavenly musicians (His angels) that should never hinder our pursuit of excellence in our worship. Especially where music is concerned, the Scriptures say nothing about Bible studies, sermons or even offerings in heaven. But we do know that we will sing there. In our worship we are rehearsing for what we will be doing in heaven – singing the praises of our triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - for all eternity!

Opening Hymn No. 2 o worship the KinG GrantVERSE 1O worship the king all-glorious above, O gratefully sing His power and His love; our shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days, pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise.

VERSE 2O tell of His might, O sing of His grace, whose robe is the light, whose canopy space. His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form, and dark is His path on the wings of the storm.

VERSE 3The earth with its store of wonders untold, Almighty, Your pow’r has founded of old; has ’stablished it fast by a changeless decree, and round it has cast, like a mantle, the sea.

VERSE 4Your bountiful care what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air; it shines in the light; it streams from the hills; it descends to the plain; and sweetly distils in the dew and the rain.

VERSE 5Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, in You do we trust, nor find You to fail; Your mercies how tender, how firm to the end, our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend!

VERSE 6O measureless Might! Ineffable love! While angels delight to hymn You above, the humbler creation, though feeble their lays, with true adoration shall lisp to Your praise.

The Confession of Faith (Heidelberg Catechism, Question 1)

Q. What is your only comfort in life and in death?

A. That I am not my own, but belong - body and soul, in life and in death – to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ.

He has fully paid for all my sins with His precious blood and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil.

He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from

Pastoral Prayer

The Confession of Sin (use the prayer below as a guide)Merciful God, you made me in your image, with a mind to know you, a heart to love you, and a will to serve you. But my knowledge is imperfect, my love inconstant, my obedience incomplete. Day by day, I fail to grow into your likeness. In your tender love, forgive me through Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, Amen.

The Assurance of Pardon Titus 3:4-6

“But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior.”
