FROM THE RECTOR 28 September 2014

Dear Friends,

Last Sunday’s parable of the workers in the vineyard challenged us to examine ourselves and ask whether we are envious of others, and especially whether we truly rejoice in the spiritual blessings given to other members of the Body of Christ, or instead are resentful of others whom we think may not be as worthy, or work as hard, as we do.

Today, the parable of the Father and the Two Sons challenges us again, this time to ponder whether we are actually doing what God wants at all, or are merely paying him lip service.

God is not impressed by ‘image’ or respectability. It is by doing what he tells us (that is, living by the values of the Kingdom, including treating others with love and respect, and being sorry for when we have failed to do as he asks) that shows we are following Jesus. If we are on the wrong path, the parable also reminds us that we can always change, and experience his grace.

With every blessing,

Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

PARISH NEWS

Wedding Anniversary Congratulations: Catherine and Rohan Ashover (28th), Neil and Valerie Ewer (30th)

Happy Birthday: John Little, Derek Moore (3rd)

Music notes for today’s Family Eucharist: Today's anthems are two communion hymns drawn from the New English Hymnal: the first is Friedrich Frilitz's tune Wen in Leidenstagen set to words translated from the Latin by Edward Caswall (the tune is often simply called Caswall after the poet). The second anthem is the communion text 'Sweet sacrament divine' set to the tune Divine Mysteries composed by the Rev Francis Stanfield who also wrote the words. The voluntary is the Short Prelude and Fugue in B flat BWV 560, often attributed to J. S. Bach (1685-1750), but now generally considered to be the work of Bach's pupil Johann Ludwig Krebs (1713-1780). The Prelude contrasts an intricate manual figure, with an impressive pedal solo.

A thank you to all Parishioners who attended one or more sessions of last weekend’s Music Festival and to those who generously gave food, money and their time to help make the Festival a great success. A special thank you to the tireless workers in the kitchen and at “front of house” for their

huge effort on both days.
