fifteenth century they were given special protection because they, alongside ravens, kept the streets clean and helped prevent the spread of disease.

They have a five-foot wing span and soar on thermals – a truly majestic sight.

Go by busThere are not a lot of buses in our villages but, with a little bit of planning, they are a handy and, if you have a bus pass, free way to spend a few hours. Helpfully, if you get a bus to Sheringham, Holt or Norwich, there is a return bus the same day. For more ambitious journeys you may have to set off back home before you leave – work that one out!

Plan a shopping trip or a walk between stops. Last Thursday we stopped off at the top of Sheringham Park and walked through the park and then along the coast with plenty of time to spare before catching the bus home. The variously-coloured rhododendrons were beautiful.

Those who have a car can park in one of the villages along the coast such as Salthouse and take the Coast Hopper to, say, Holkham; stroll around the park and get the bus back. It makes for a good day out and the dog, who travels free, loves it.

Bus times have been published in previous issues of the newsletter or you can contact me for further information. Ed

Holt FestivalThis year’s festival runs from Saturday 20th to Saturday 27th July. Many events are free and the centre of Holt will be closed to traffic on the Sunday afternoon.

Holt Police Cycle MarkingPolice have launched a campaign to catch cycle thieves operating in this area. The local neighbourhood policing team is offering free cycle marking and cycle safety advice on Saturday, 6 July from 2–4 pm at Bakers and Larners.

10 Jan 1898And, whilst we are on police matters, I’d like to report that on this date Robert Scarff was fined 10/- plus 4/- costs for allowing beer to be consumed out of hours at the Hare and Hounds Public House in Hempstead.

27 June 1910And then, again, he was fined 5/- plus 4/- costs for permitting drunkenness and 10/- plus 6/6 d costs for permitting gaming on licensed premises.

For the sake of those not born that long ago: 10/- equals 50 p though inflation has had a little to do with making this conversion a little out of kilter.

With no licensed premises in our villages we can no longer be subjected to such outrageous behaviour. However, I have met a couple of people who remember the White Horse Pub in Hempstead being a place to get drunk. Ed

Weekday Holy Eucharist You are most welcome to join us every Thursday morning at 10 am in Matlaske Church for Holy Eucharist

From the RectoryThe Rectory Matlaske NR11 7AQ 577455 (any day but Wednesdays)

My dear friendsThe last few weeks have been very busy – and, like most of human life, there has been a mix of joy and sorrow.

Barningham Winter Flower Festival was a very happy occasion – the flower arrangers showed much talent and a good deal of good humour while the preparations were in progress. Our visitors enjoyed the exhibits and the choir gave us all much pleasure at Choral Evensong.

On Bank Holiday Monday I was pleased to help administer Holy Communion to a crowd of more than two thousand pilgrims at the Anglican National Pilgrimage at Walsingham – and also met up with several old friends from ‘oop north’.

Later that week came the sad news that Theresa Courtauld was very ill. I did manage to get to Addenbrooks in time to anoint Theresa. She will be sadly missed by many in the Benefice and far beyond. I will end this month’s letter with a quote from Bishop Graham’s tribute to Theresa: ‘She was immensely loyal in her support for county, church and community. She was one of the bright lights of Norfolk. We will miss her light here and I am sure she will join the great party which awaits us in heavenly places.’

God bless you all

I was part of the field gang of which there were two. Each gang of four people had a Fergie tractor and trailer. One person drove and two pitched shooks up to the loader on the trailer. When loaded off to the drum where the pitcher (what else) pitched the shuvs up to the first operator on the top of the drum. He cut the bonds, being careful to keep the binder twine separate and handed it to the important man who hand-fed the shuv into the drum. The field gang then changed places (eg, the driver became the pitcher, etc) but it was hard work. In fact, you could say without being non-PC that we all worked like blacks, mainly because we were all soon black with the dust and, for fear that we would be relegated to the very worst job which was the cavings and the calder. I must have failed to keep a low profile because on the last day at four o’clock I was suddenly asked ‘Would you go on the stack?’ – the straw had to go somewhere. Sid, the ace stacker was a diabetic and had to go home at four for a fix, etc, to return at five o’clock. I was always game for anything so up the ladder I went to take over. I can sympathise with Sisyphus – the ****** straw just kept coming up the elevator without ceasing. Stop to wipe the sweat from your brow and twice the amount of straw is looking at you! I beavered away doing the best I could. Unfortunately the stack was being brought in at this stage, eg, the sides were being

brought into the apex. Sid came back at five o’clock. Nobody had said anything for an hour. Poor Sid looked at my efforts and we better not say what he said. I had made a complete mess of it! and Sid had to take the flack.

What fun it was, I believe we had sixteen people all working as a team. Bertie Harmer

Bertie’s Ramblings Keep you a troshing...as Keith Skipper would say. The separation of corn from the straw and husk is an interesting subject. You could tell where someone comes from by his vocabulary. Where I worked as a farm student we thrashed. We put the shuvs into shooks – and so on. I was extremely lucky to take part in this operation in 1961.

Great Naidens, about 45 acres, was down to Cocksfoot Grass for seed. At the appropriate time it was cut with a binder attached to the ubiquitous grey Ferguson tractor. This machine cut the grass, gathered it up and tied it into shuvs. Immediately a gang of us with pitchforks picked them up and stood them into shooks – six shuvs leaning against each other to form the shook so that the wind could blow through them; and the sun ripens and dry either side.

The grand day arrived when they were ready for thrashing. The Ransomes Drum, thrashing machine, or just drum was serviced and pulled carefully into place, near the gate at the side of the field. No steam engine I’m afraid, but the McCormick tractor, was attached with a long bolt and we were ready to go. But not before an inspection by the guvenor. It was important that the machine should be level. So there were two spirit levels on two adjacent sides. He slid back the cover on the first to find a piece of cardboard reading ‘balls’ and then looked at the other. ‘Oh’, he said, ‘that looks all right’.

water logged and the airfield inoperative. There was a substantial perimeter track in concrete around the field – part of which remains today. The airfield also had a large number of prefabricated buildings, a control tower, and even a hospital, together with large earth and brick embankments to protect both the aircraft and airmen working on them. These embankments can still be seen in places around the ’drome.

A wide variety of fighter aircraft passed through Matlaske during its five years of operations. Spitfires, Typhoons and American Mustangs being the more- common; although the writer seems to recall that the little Walrus Amphibians had a stay

The writer does – just. My family often cycled to relations at Oulton near Aylsham and so had to go via Matlaske. Well, that was the plan, but you couldn’t do it as the road from Matlaske school through to Dale Head was closed and so a diversion was necessary via Barningham Dog Corner and Little Barningham village with its steep hill.

The airfield was constructed in 1940 as a satellite of RAF Coltishall and was, therefore, always to be somewhat in the shadow of its more-glamorous cousin. To cut down on building time no runways were constructed; landing and take offs being on grass with wire mesh reinforcement. This lack of runways occasionally made the field

Theresa CourtauldIt was with a sense of shock and sadness that we learnt of the sudden death of Theresa Courtauld on May 31st 2013.

13

Spending much of her early years at Barningham Hall, Theresa was no stranger to us when, in 1976, she and the children came to live in The Manor. She was to become involved in many aspects of village life, serving on the Parish Council for many years, chairman of the Parochial Church Council and organiser of the annual Churches Trust Cycle Ride. A founder member of the Busy Bees playgroup and more recently helping out with the monthly Community Lunches. Many a Garden Fête was held in her lovely garden at The Manor.

She had a great love of St Mary’s Church and worked tirelessly to raise money for the upkeep of this beautiful place. Her last venture, an exhibition of Coronation memorabilia to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, will be long remembered by many; as will Theresa. The church, filled to overflowing and looking resplendent for her funeral service, was a fitting testament of the high esteem in which she was held. Ro

CongratulationsTo Dot and Jimmy Smith who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 13th. The couple, who have known each other since school and spent most of their married life at Tuppenny Grove, marked the day with flowers, family and a card from the Queen. Our thoughts are also with them as Dot is still seriously ill at Benjamin Court, Cromer. Donna and family

Village Hall NewsThe Jumble Sale was a great success with most of the clothes being sold. Over £200 was raised which will go into the funds to run your Village Hall.

We hope we will get some response to our plea for help to run your Village Hall so that it can maintain and improve this important Community Building. So please attend the AGM on Thursday, 11th July at 7:30 pm because if you don’t help us the fund raising will stop at Christmas but only the regular events will continue. The Hall will be kept clean and tidy for anyone wishing to hire the hall. John Cooper

Moving HomeThere have been many departures this month. Andy Hutchinson has left us to live in Holt. Andy and her late husband, Philip, came to live in Walnut Tree Cottage in 1995. Andy has been a regular worshipper at St Mary’s Church and a member of the Textile Group, both she intends to continue with once settled in her new home, so we won’t be losing touch with her completely.

Also, Sheila and Greg Robson have moved from their home at Sunnyvale to Sheringham. This has enabled them to be near their son and four grandchildren. During the fourteen years they have lived here they, too, have been regular worshippers at St Mary’s, where Sheila was also a dab hand at ringing the bells before the services. They will be greatly missed, not least by the scrabble-playing fraternity.

Last but not least, Jayne Caine from Willow Glen and Conall the dog, have moved on to pastures new. The donkeys and sheep have been re-homed, so all is well. Jayne was a former editor of the Village Newsletter and still a regular contributor with her tales of various wildlife that visited her lovely garden.

All these good folk have played a large part in village life one way or another. We wish them well. Ro

It’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooledMark Twain

Barningham NewsTheresa CourtauldWe send our condolences to the Courtauld family of Barningham Hall on the sudden death of Thomas’ mother Theresa, who had just celebrated her 70th birthday. Theresa will be remembered by her kindness to everyone and her ability to get things done quietly and without a fuss. Over the years she helped raise so many funds for the little church at Barningham as she did for so many churches in Norfolk. I remember happy days of summer fêtes at Barningham Hall, cheese and wine parties, barbecues, nativity plays and going through the snowy lanes of Barningham squashed in the landrover to go carol singing, all to raise money for the churches. Theresa had a great knowledge of Barningham Estate and always took a keen interest of what was happening ‘farming wise’. She will be sadly missed by all of us on the Barningham Estate. SB

Flower Festival

‘Blooming Barningham’ was the title of the second Flower Festival to be held at St. Mary’s Church, Barningham Winter. The theme was a celebration of the beauty of God’s Creation. Busy days of preparation led up to a Private View on Thursday, May 23rd, when wine and canapés were enjoyed by the patrons and helpers amidst a sea of gorgeous flowers. The Church was open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for public viewing and refreshments were served. From

grand pedestal displays to tiny gardens produced by the children, and jam-jar posies, to a flower-filled font, there was something for all tastes. The colours and forms of the flowers in their various arrangements and the variety of supporting artefacts fully illustrated the words of the Benedicite we heard later at the Festival’s closing Choral Evensong. We were pleased to see a full church at this service and there was a truly celebratory atmosphere. We ‘sang it with flowers’.

Our grateful thanks to Michael and Jo Cartwright for their organisation and help throughout. Our many thanks also to all arrangers, particularly the children, whose work was much admired, all patrons, sitters-in, cake-makers and everyone who helped to make this event a success. We are happy to say we raised just under £600. Mary Wortley

here for a time. Certainly the most interesting fighter to be based at Matlaske was the Westland Whirlwind – a single-seat twin-engined job with, on paper, a great potential.

Only two squadrons were ever equipped with them because the aircraft was let down by unreliable engines. A dark day for Matlaske was when four Whirlwinds were lost from six that took part against German Battleships which were making a dash for safety from the English Channel.

Officers were billeted at Itteringham Hall and Barningham Hall. Other ranks presumably had to rough it in Nisson Huts on the ’drome itself.

At the end of hostilities in Europe (1945), Matlaske was quickly de-commissioned and returned to agricultural use; but for several years the building, control tower and perimeter track remained. The latter was a useful way of providing driving instruction for pupils off the public highway, and it was also used for impromptu motor cycle races by the local lads. When the school at Matlaske was still in use one airfield building just opposite was still utilised – as a cook house to prepare the school meals!

Sixty odd years on since its closure, the airfield was at last to get the recognition it deserved, a handsome stone memorial records its existence and is a memory of all the airmen and women who served there during those dark days of war. Arthur Pentney

A 1 4 8 +3 3 3

B 4 8 1 +3 3 3

C 8 1 4In the sums above the number A (148) has 333 added to it to make the number B (481). Then, adding 333 to B makes the number C (814). There are five other sets of three-digit numbers which produce the same kind of result when 333 is added to them – the important thing is that all three numbers A, B and C have the same digits but in a different order. Can you find any of them?

Hints: 1) You may use 0 in the hundreds column if you wish. 2) Think logically rather than just using ‘trial and error’ – it could take you a long time working through all the possibilities!
