FROM THE RECTOR 27 July 2014 Dear Friends, To find a treasure either by a stroke of luck or after a persistent search is real good fortune. The chance of a lifetime, the unexpected opportunity, is to discover in Jesus the kingdom of heaven. But to take possession of it, we have to sell everything we possess like the merchant and the digger in the parables, in order to obtain what we desire. What could be seen as folly, however, is genuine prudence. The world is made up of the good and the wicked. If we wish to be among the good, accepting Christ’s gift of redemption, we must be happy to detach ourselves from everything that holds us back. With every blessing, Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

PARISH NEWS Baptism Enrolments: At the 10:00am Family Eucharist, Gracie Gilchrist, Peter Matthews, and Avery Peterson are to be enrolled for Holy Baptism. Please pray for Gracie, Peter and Avery as their families and godparents prepare for this Sacrament.

VALE – TED WENNING With the death of Ted Wenning last Tuesday, we extend deep sympathies to his wife, Leonie and his many friends and family. Ted and Leonie have been longstanding and faithful parishioners at St John’s. Ted’s Funeral Service will be held at St John’s on Wednesday 30 July at 2:00pm, and is to be followed by refreshments in the Parish Centre. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Music notes for today’s Family Eucharist: Despite his now recognised position as one of the greatest English composers, for much of his lifetime Edward Elgar was an outsider: he was not a product of the university or conservatory system, being largely self taught, in addition he was Roman Catholic in a musical patriarchy that was still largely Anglican. His Ave Maria op.2 no. 2 dates 1887 when he was organist of St George's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester. Some of his most enduring choral miniatures were composed in this period: including the Ave Maria Stella and Pie Jesu (later revised to become the famous Ave Verum). The Ave Maria was revised in 1907 and dedicated to Mrs Hubert Leicester, wife of the choirmaster at St George's. The authorship of J. S. Bach's Allabreve has recently been questioned especially by Peter Williams in his seminal work The Organ Music of J. S. Bach. It is probable that the work dates from the early eighteenth-century and is an extended fugal treatment of a simple rising theme which passes through many disparate keys before returning triumphantly to the tonic.

Pins'n'Needles is holding a stall of handmade goods this morning after both 8:00am and 10:00am services; funds will be used to buy materials for their ongoing work for the needy. Donations of surplus 8-ply yarn (both acryclic and wool) would be appreciated. The next meeting will be held in the Parish Centre hall on Tuesday 12 August, 9:30am-12:30pm. For information, please speak with Pam Fisher (9939 6330) or Heather Andrews (9971 6132). People in our Prayers: Audette Vaughan writes, “my thanks to all at St John’s for the kindness they have shown to me while I was in Manly and Delmar hospitals recently. I really appreciated the cards, gifts, flowers, telephone calls and visits. I am also thankful for the prayer support given to me. You have all, in various ways, helped to ease me through this difficult time.”

And to further raise the spirit, the recital will be followed by St John’s famous afternoon tea.
