FROM THE RECTOR 23 November 2014 Dear Friends, The gospel reading for the last Sunday of the liturgical year focuses our attention on the connection between the last days and our own life: on our neighbour, in relation to whom we shall be judged, and on Christ the King, who will preside over this tribunal. We must think clearly about the last days, not to dream about heaven as the solution to all our problems, but to live as befits one who awaits the immense gathering of all humankind in the presence of the messianic Shepherd. Our final destiny is worked out in the smallest details of our present life. With every blessing, Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

PARISH NEWS

Christ the King Sunday: Today (23 November) is the Sunday before Advent and the last Sunday in the Church’s liturgical year. The Feast of Christ the King was instituted in 1925, and reminds Christians of their allegiance to their spiritual rule as distinct from earthly powers. This year we again welcome The Cathedral Singers to the 10:00am Holy Eucharist.

Advent - Countdown to Christmas: Next Sunday 30 November, is the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day and marks the start of the Church’s new liturgical year. Advent (from the Latin word adventus meaning "coming") is a season observed as a time of expectant waiting and preparation both for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas, and for his second coming. Common traditions include the “Advent Calendar” often used for children to count the days ‘til Christmas, and the Advent Wreath used at St John’s. The wreath and candles symbolise the passage of the four weeks of Advent; the first candle is attributed to the Prophets, the second to John the Baptist, the third (the rose coloured candle) to the Virgin Mary, and the fourth to the Church. A fifth, white candle is for the Christmas birth.

Advent Carols: In this service at 6:00pm on Sunday 30 November, the Church rejoices that the purposes of God, foretold by the prophets and accomplished in the Saviour’s birth, life, death and resurrection, have been fulfilled. Please come to this service if you can and bring a plate to share for supper.

Empty Christmas Tree: St John’s is again supporting the Anglicare “Toys ’n’ Tucker” appeal and Dee Why Women’s Refuge, helping needy families to enjoy some gifts and festive food on Christmas Day. Please see notices in the lobby and take flyers for family, friends or neighbours who may like to contribute. During Advent, please bring your gifts (new, unwrapped presents or hamper food) or donations you wish to make, between now and 10 December. Anglicare will collect items that are left with the office on 11 December. Items left between then and 18 December will be donated to the Dee Why Women’s Refuge.

Christmas Carols: This year the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols will be held on Sunday 21 December at 6:00pm (please note the day).

St John’s Pins’n’Needles Group will have their final meeting on Tuesday 25 November at 9:30am after a very successful year and will resume on Tuesday 10 February 2015 continuing on every second and fourth Tuesday of each month.

Caritas: Everyone is welcome to the final meeting for the year in the Parish Centre on Monday 1 December at 7:30pm for a short service, fellowship and supper. Also a chance to think about next year’s program.

Op Shop: There will be a Saturday barbecue following the 6 December Op Shop (after packing) for all our volunteers and helpers. This is a small way of saying “Thank You” for all your support and hard work throughout the year.

St John’s Christmas Day Lunch is on again this year! For information, please speak with Lynette Johnson after services or on 0408 254 125. Lynette writes, “We need helpers, including guests who can act as table hosts and welcomers. Donations of money, food, nibbles and other assistance are welcome. We have always had a wonderful time with our Christmas Day Lunch; I await your calls.”

Happy Birthday to Neil Ewer (23rd), Wendy Johnson, Pam Andersen (29th)

Wedding Anniversary Congratulations to Mary and Allaster McDougall (29th)

Anniversary of Ordination: Congratulations to Deacon Sandra on her 25th anniversary of ordination today, with grateful thanks for her ministry in the church and among us in the Parish.

Reading sheets are now available on the lobby table for 16 November to 28 December please collect your readings.

Call for Volunteers: ACT for Peace, the well-known Christmas Bowl Appeal agency (part of the National Council of Churches in Australia), is calling for friends to become volunteers for speaking occasionally (up to four times a year) in support of their work. Training is provided. For information see details on the noticeboard in the lobby.
