Iwould like to begin with a heartfelt thank you to the Association of Florida Colleges and “The Great 28” for giving me this memorable opportunity to lead in 2018. A BIG thank you to the Executive Committee, Board of Directors, Chapters, Regions, Commissions, and Councils for without you, our goals that we set this year would not have been accomplished.

I started the year with this comment, “I am very proud to be a 20 year member of the AFC. In 2018, we will continue strengthening our relationships with our community, growing our membership and making our voice heard as an association. United we are strong, proudly representing colleges that provide world class higher education across the state. This year, we will navigate the challenges we face in higher education together making success for all students mission possible.” As I recap our year, we as an association have a lot to be proud of. Together we grew our membership and advocacy base reaching new heights by exceeding the goal with an 11% increase. We expanded our professional development offerings by not only doubling the number of high quality workshops offered throughout the state but, by offering a Spring Teaching and Learning conference for the first time in the history of AFC. Together we answered the Campus Safety call through achieving great participation at the Campus Safety Symposium, offering BIT training and certification, and partnering with law enforcement communities across the state to share safety measures and raise awareness. We provided a great annual conference this fall that offered opportunities for members to share high impact practices, advocate, collaborate and network with peers. AFC, we not only met our goals together this year, we exceeded them! As we transition to this next year I challenge you to keep the momentum going. I congratulate Ms. Marjorie McGee as the incoming President and Mr. Matthew White as the incoming President-Elect! I wish them and their Board of Officers all the best in 2019. In closing, I am humbled and honored to have served the Association of Florida College and The Great 28 this 2018 year. I wish you much success as you navigate the future. AFC, I have no doubt if we stand united THE BEST IS YET TO COME!

Wa rm Regards and Best Wishes, Dr. Tunjarnika L. Coleman-Ferrell

President’s Message

Thank You

In some ways, I hate to see 2018 end. In my 10-year plus tenure in this position, for me, this was one of the most rewarding

and accomplished years for the Association. We scored a lot of "W"’s as they say in sports vernacular. There was no rest for the weary on the legislative front. The annual 60 day session started in January barely six months after the end of the 2017 session. After a

bruising financial year in 2017, 2018 moved us a little forward. We were able to recover some funding ($7.4 million), we held off the annual attack on our governance structure, pushed back on proposed bills that could have impacted our foundation and reserve accounts, and witnessed the end of a lengthy tenure of a Senate leader who we all concluded really did have it out for us as a system. Sometimes playing good defense wins the game. We maintained a steadfast message and our composure. That resonated well and we believe we will be more strongly supported in 2019 by both legislative chambers. We worked to support a proposal to amend the Florida Constitution and solidify our local governance model and mission as primarily two-year degree granting institutions with strong articulations for students to enter the university system. Amendment 7 passed with over 73% approval of the voters. Again, it was a great “W” and most certainly a feel good moment for the AFC and the Council of Presidents.

Executive Director/CEO’s MessageBY MICHAEL BRAWER

2018: A Year of Change for the AFC AFC President Nika Coleman-Ferrell set some amazing goals and set us on the track as we raced to the finish line. We expanded professional development for members by taking the lead on campus safety issues. We offered the first ever Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) certification, in conjunction with our annual Campus Safety Symposium. Eighty-eight college professionals from all 28 institutions were trained to implement and manage a BIT. We also started a new conference, the AFC Conference on College Teaching and Learning. One hundred

forty college faculty members attended last April and shared best practices and research regarding pedagogy, student learning, and success. President Coleman-Ferrell also pushed us to increase membership. To date almost 700 new faculty and staff have joined the AFC family. The AFC Foundation rolled out close to $15,000 worth of $400 checks to AFC members at Gulf Coast State College and Chipola College who were impacted by Hurricane Michael. We had members who lost their homes, vehicles, and

worldly possessions. We always try to do for our AFC family what we would do for our own families. The AFC staff took truckloads of relief supplies for college employees and students at both institutions. It’s been quite a year. One we hope to continue to build upon as we increase the value-added for your membership, and enhance the statewide role of the AFC as the primary support organization for the Florida College System. I wish all of you a happy and healthy holiday season and 2019. Thank you for your membership, your support, and doing what you do for your colleges and communities.

It's been quite a year. One we hope to continue to

build upon as we increase the value-added for your

membership...

Hurricane Michael Relief: #AFCStrong

The Florida Panhandle and its residents have been forever changed by Hurricane Michael. The devastation and challenges our Chipola College and Gulf Coast State College AFC members are continuing to deal with are heartbreaking. The AFC family is responding to our members in need through several avenues.

This year’s Annual Conference Service Project was quickly redirected toward collecting donations of needed items for our AFC colleagues in the panhandle. AFC staff delivered items to Chipola College shortly after the storm and, after the conference, traveled to Gulf Coast State College with a box truck of donated items collected by the conference service project including additional personal items donated by the Doubletree Tallahassee.

The Annual Conference Silent Auction raised $8,000 for the AFC Foundation which has already disbursed over $16,000 to 42 AFC members who applied for assistance. Together we are #AFCStrong!

“AFC Family: I wanted to thank you all for everything you have done in helping during this

difficult time. Coming to our aid at Chipola for all our students and staff has truly been a humbling

experience. Hurricane Michael destroyed our homes, land, crops, and beautiful landscape but it did not destroy the kindness, love and support

of community. Being a part of AFC is not just a membership it is being part of an awesome family.

Thank you again for all that you have done and continue to do in serving our community.”

The 7th graduating class of the Certified College Professional (CCP) Program was recognized at the 2018 AFC Annual Meeting and Conference Presidential Gala. Six graduates were in attendance to receive their CCP certificates and medals (pictured below). This flagship program was designed to provide AFC members with the opportunity to earn a designation related to their work as college professionals, and expose them to content and experiences they may not be able to obtain elsewhere. To date, there are 64 CCP graduates.

The first of the AFC’s three certificate offerings of the CCP is the Florida College Professional Certificate (FCPC). The other two certificates currently under development are the Florida College Leader Certificate (FCLC) and the Florida College Executive Certificate (FCEC).

Enrollment in the self-paced CCP Program is open to any Association member at any level of employment at a college. To learn more and apply for the CCP Program, please visit the Certified College Professional Program webpage.

Dr. Chuck Mojock, President (retired), Lake Sumter State College(adapted from his Journey Break comments at the 2018 AFC Annual Meeting and Conference) So how did my personal journey with AFC, then FACC, begin? Well, it was literally on my first day on the job in 1979 at what was then Daytona Beach Community College. After going through all my paperwork at HR, I returned to the office with a stack of forms. My boss looked at it and pulled out the application for FACC and said – “Oh yeah, you need to do that!”. Why I asked? She said, “FACC brings together people from all levels of the Great 28 and it gives us a voice. You can do payroll deduction so you won’t even miss it”. Well, I’m the new guy so who am I to differ with the boss. I signed up that day. Who was the source of this great advice? My boss was Evelyn Fine. At that time, her boss, Frank Casey, was running for President of FACC and he won! Later, as many of you know, Frank became Executive Director of FACC and served with distinction. And what about Evelyn Fine? Well, she became President of FACC. Evelyn always encouraged me to get involved and seek out leadership opportunities. I served as Chapter officer, then Commission Chair and State Board member. Because of FACC, I met people from all over the state and made lifelong friends while learning things about our colleges and our system that I never would have been exposed to if there were no FACC. All this because leaders like Frank and Evelyn took the time to invest in me! What a legacy! I became State VP and ultimately in 1999, I was honored to be elected President of the Association and presided over our 50th Anniversary Celebration. At the Annual Convention, we gathered as many past Presidents and leaders as we could and it was truly an awe inspiring event that I will always remember and cherish!FACC and AFC helped shape me as a community college professional and leader. As I progressed in my career and became a college President, I never forgot the valuable lessons passed on to me and I vowed to do likewise. I supported our Chapter and personally encouraged members to get involved and step up to leadership. And step up they did! And so my friends, now it is your turn! Don’t stop believing! But don’t just hold on to the feeling. No, share that feeling and bring all your friends and colleagues in the Great 28 into the great tent of AFC! Thanks!

ChaptersFLORIDA SOUTHWESTERN STATE COLLEGE

FSW Chapter Rebuilding! The Florida SouthWestern State College Chapter of AFC held a general meeting in November that included President Jefferey Allbritten as a guest speaker and a legislative update from our Director of Government Relations, Matthew Holliday. President Allbritten touched on his journey from AFC member to AFC President and how it helped him in making lifelong connections throughout the Florida College System. The FSW chapter is undergoing a time of rebuilding and we are excited to grow and rebrand throughout the upcoming year. For the first time in over two years, (almost) all of our executive board positions are filled. In addition to building our active membership, we have added numerous members to commissions, including commission executive boards.

RegionsREGION II The 2018 Region of the Year ended the year with a BANG! Region II filled what was left of the year with fun and excitement within the region with community service, a social, professional development, and fundraising. On Thursday, September 20th, Region II hosted a free Professional Development Conference at Florida State College at Jacksonville. This was FSCJ’s first AFC event in quite some time. The event was very well attended by both FSCJ members as well as members from around the region. 53 people were registered for the event from 4 of the 5 regional colleges. This professional development event offered two tracks for attendees and included session topics such as diversity, wellness, recruitment and retention, service learning, cultural sensitivity, and more. The event was offered free to the region due to a very generous sponsorship by Dr. John Wall, FSCJ Provost. Dr. Wall provided a sponsorship for the event that covered in full the morning coffee, catered lunch, and beverages. Leading up to the Professional Development Conference, members of the region gathered donation items to donate to the HOPE Food Pantry at FSCJ. Region members collected non-perishable items September 4th-19th to be delivered on September 20th. The region was able to come together to provide an entire barrel of goodies for the pantry.

Region II also had a friendly battle for a social. On Saturday, September 15th, Florida Gateway College hosted St. Johns River State College on the volleyball court. Attendees included over 10 members and their families cheering for their team choice, and everyone had a great time. Leading up to Annual Conference, Region II was feeling like Region of the Year, regardless of whether the Awards Committee would agree or not. Region II T-shirts were designed, sold on preorders, and ordered. Several members of the region were wearing their Region II T-shirts when it was announced at the closing brunch that the Awards Committee agreed that Region II was the BEST region this year. This was, and is, monumental for the region, as Region II has never won Region of the Year…until this year! This year’s Region Director, Holly Sutton, was also honored for the hard work and dedication to the region with the Distinguished Service Award.

Words of recognition presented with the award included, “As Region Director, she worked diligently to ensure that the region completed its duties and responsibilities. With two chapters not functioning, she accepted the challenge with a positive attitude and a resolved to push forward and make Region 2 the best Region in the AFC. She hosted two socials for the region’s colleges, organized two environmental service activities for the region and established two service projects for non-profits in the region. All of this outside of the “normal region duties.” Her goal, to connect the region colleges and build upon the values and benefits of the AFC! Her level of commitment to picking up the pieces and ensuring that Region 2 would be strong again is both commendable and inspiring.” Region II, the 2018 Region of the Year, has had an amazing year and is already planning and looking forward to the things 2019 will bring. Region II is back, y’all!
