Success in life often comes down to making the best of any situation. Scouting hands youth situations, and shows them how to make the best of them. Whether it’s through navigating the world of computer programming, gathering food donations, or figuring out how to lead a group through the woods with a map and compass, Scouting helps youth realize what they’re truly capable of doing.

Since 1910, the Boy Scouts of America has helped build the future leaders of this country, from astronauts to schoolteachers. Today, with over 2.4 million youth members and 1 million adult volunteers, Scouting is one of the most influential youth organizations in the country.

SCOUTING PROGRAMS

Cub Scouts. Through fun activities, challenging adventures and community service projects, Cub Scouts make new friends and discover the importance of cooperation, citizenship, responsibility and physical fitness in their everyday lives.

(girls and boys in grades k-5)

Boy Scouts. Scouting is the ultimate form of learning by doing. Youth lead their own activities and participate in service, outdoor adventures, and leadership development programs. Scouts are introduced to countless hobbies, interests, sciences, and even future career choices. (boys ages 11-17; girls can join beginning February 2019)

Exploring. Career exploration and work force development program. Youth gain practical insight and hands-on knowledge in a career field of their choice.

(young women & men age 14-20 or 13 years old & completed 8th grade)

Venturing. Provides positive experiences through exciting and meaningful youth-run activities for pursuing special interests, growing by teaching others, and developing leadership skills.

(young women & men age 14-20 or 13 years old & completed 8th grade)

BENEFITS OF SCOUTINGScouting provides experiences that help prepare youth for their future. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.

Scouting fosters the spirit of discovery for future innovators and leaders by investing in new and relevant programs such as STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). These programs also provide youth with a platform to learn important life skills that will help them combat major societal concerns.

Scouting provides youth with programs and activities that allow them the opportunity to:

TRY NEW THINGS PROVIDE SERVICE TO OTHERS BUILD SELF-CONFIDENCE REINFORCE ETHICAL DECISION MAKING

For the parents watching in awe, it’s not a question of where their Scout will go, but where won’t they go. Scouting helps parents make the most of the little time they have to impact the lives of their children. Scouting gives parents the gift of seeing their children reach their full potential by challenging them in ways they may not otherwise experience.

ORDER OF THE ARROWFor more than 100 years, the Order of the Arrow (O.A.) has recognized Scouts and adult Scouters who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. O.A. members, called Arrowmen, are known for maintaining camping traditions and spirit, promoting year-round and long-term resident camping, and providing cheerful service to others.

Member elections are primarily done at the troop level or at summer camp, depending on the lodge (Anpetu-We, Nisha Kittan, or Shawnee). At summer camp, families witness the callout ceremony on family night. After the callout, members are inducted at the fall reunion or spring conclave in a ceremony called an Ordeal.

Brotherhood Membership After 10 months of service as an Ordeal member and fulfilling certain requirements, a member may take part in the Brotherhood ceremony, which places further emphasis on the ideals of Scouting and the Order. Completion of this ceremony signifies full membership in the Order.

Vigil Honor After two years of exceptional service as a Brotherhood member, and with the approval of the national Order of the Arrow committee, a Scout or Scouter may be recognized with the Vigil Honor for distinguished contributions to his or her lodge, the Order of the Arrow, Scouting, or Scout camp. This honor is bestowed by special selection and is limited to one person for every 50 members registered with the lodge each year.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The BSA’s STEM initiative gives Scouts an opportunity to explore STEM-related concepts and learn how STEM knowledge is used in everyday life and in the professional world. The aim is to introduce youth to new opportunities and help build interest in the STEM-related careers that are so crucial to our future economy.

The BSA uses the NOVA and SuperNOVA Awards program to promote STEM education.

A service project is a special Good Turn that puts Scout spirit into action. Projects can take many forms such as a community cleanup, repairing a place of worship, improving a wildlife habitat, or organizing a recycling effort.

Be sure to report all service hours. We want to keep track of all the good Scouting does for the community, and it is a key measurement goal in the Journey to Excellence program. Last year, Scouts in the Greater St. Louis Area Council performed 123,614 hours of service to their communities.

To easily log your unit’s service hours, visit stlbsa.org/communityservice.

GOOD TURNS

SCOUTING FOR FOOD | SFF.STLBSA.ORGNovember 10 | Bag Distribution Day

November 17 | Bag Collection Day

Scouting for Food, sponsored by MERS Missouri Goodwill, is the council’s annual service project and the largest one-day food drive in the Boy Scouts of America.

The campaign, entering its 34th year, is launched on “Bag Distribution Day” when Scouts distribute more than 1 million plastic bags to residences. The Scouts return to neighborhoods the following week, “Bag Collection Day,” to retrieve the bags filled with donated non-perishable food.

Each year, Scouting for Food collects about 2 million items of food— enough to provide more than 1.5 million meals for those in need.

MEMORIAL DAY GOOD TURNMay 26 | Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery and United Hebrew Congregation (St. Louis)

STLBSA.ORG/MEMORIAL-DAY-GOOD-TURN

For more than six decades, Scouts have been decorating graves with an American flag to honor veterans for Memorial Day.

At Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, the tradition, entering its 69th year, is one of the longest running Memorial Day events within the Boy Scouts of America.

This Good Turn begins with a solemn procession into the cemetery and short 30-minute ceremony honoring deceased military personnel. Following the ceremony, Scouts and Venturers place an American flag at more than 150,000 graves throughout the cemetery.

Members of all religions and ages are also invited to help place over 7,000 flags on the graves of our war veterans at St. Louis area Jewish cemeteries. The event is sponsored by the Jewish War Veterans and the Jewish Committee on Scouting. Youth perform a brief ceremony at each grave site for a meaningful experience.

Scouts of all ages and from all districts are invited to participate in both Good Turn events.

Want to reduce your out-of-pocket expenses for summer camp? Or need to purchase a new uniform? Help fund your Scouting program through the Camp Card sale and Popcorn sale.

Money raised by units through fundraising can be used to cover the cost of camporees, pinewood derby races, field trips, equipment, badges and advancement, and summer camp.

POPCORNEvery fall, the Greater St. Louis Area Council conducts its annual popcorn fundraiser. We are excitedto announce Pecatonica River as the supplier for our 2018 popcorn sale!

Not only do units benefits from selling popcorn, but these sales also benefit the council by providing things such as camperships for Scouts who need financial assistance to attend camp; events including Scouting For Food, Cub Launch, and Fall Fright Fest; and maintenance of our camp properties.

Scouts can earn prizes and even a college scholarship account based on their total sales.

Register to sell popcorn at popcorn.stlbsa.org.

Several ways to sell popcorn:• Show & Sell — Units set up a table and display products for people to purchase as they walk by. Or Scouts can take product door-to-door to sell.• Take Order — Scouts ask neighbors, friends, and family to purchase products. Product is ordered on a form and delivered at a later date.• Online Sales — Scouts create their own online store through the Pecatonica River website.

CAMP CARDSCamp cards offer discounts at local businesses. There are different cards for each region of the council — St. Louis metro area, southeast Missouri, and southern Illinois.

Scouts earn $2.50 for each $5 Camp Card sold. Incentives and prizes are available for different sales levels.

The sale begins Feb. 1 and ends April 5, giving units two full months to sell and close out their accounts. The program is risk free. Units can simply return any unsold cards by the sale deadline with no penalty.

Visit campcard.stlbsa.org for more information.

FRIENDS OF SCOUTINGFriends of Scouting (FOS) is the annual giving campaign of the Greater St. Louis Area Council. TheFOS campaign provides nearly 20% of the Council budget every year. That means nearly a quarter of every dollar in the council budget comes from the generosity of Scouting families, alumni and community supporters. Without this funding, our council could not supply the resources necessary to provide a quality, adventure-filled scouting program.

Each gift to GSLAC provides tremendous assistance such as:• insurance for leaders and participants• improving camp properties for your Scouts and future Scouts• underprivileged youth have opportunity to join regardless of financial situation• volunteer training
