Winter SafetyWinter collection can be challenging for our drivers, please:

• Place materials in a visible spot at the end of your driveway

• Keep recycling & waste offsnowbanks and the street, and out of the way of snow removalequipment. Shovel out a smallcollection area, if necessary.

• Set it out in the morning (before 7AM) to avoid overnightsnow and ice accumulation.

• Avoid setting white garbagebags on snowbanks.

BackyardCompostingDo you know that backyardcomposting can reduce householdwaste by up to a 1/3? Compostingalso provides a high quality soilconditioner for plants and gardens;more nutritious than peat moss!

With just a little work, planning and management, you can create a vermin-free space for organicwaste in your garden.

Backyard composting resourcescan be found online (visit “Waste &Recycling” on the City of KawarthaLakes website), at your local library, and of course by asking yourfavourite gardening whiz!

Composters are available forpurchase through the municipality(page 48) or at your local hardware or gardening supplies store.

Bin Basics: Don’t let blustery spring days take hold of your recycling bin contents! Try these out: Put lighter items on the bottom and heavier items on top. Place your full garbage bag on the bin toweigh down the contents. If you have a large amount in your green (paper/fibre) bin, stack it up sideways insteadof on the bottom. And finally, don’t overfill your bin! 9

CrittersWildlife is abundant in the City ofKawartha Lakes! To keep them outof your waste and recycling:

• Use a garbage can or box lid

• Set out on collection morning (by 7AM); the less time exposedand in the hot sun, the better

• Store organics (especially bone andmeat waste) in the freezer until youare ready to place it at the curb

• Invest in a heavy-duty, bear-proofbin. Halve the cost by sharing itwith a neighbour. Clearly mark yourhouse numbers on the inside lid ofyour garbage can to avoid singledwelling bag limit penalties

You are responsible for your recyclingand waste until it is collected.

But if you don’t have a travel mugand need to recycle, where doesyour paper cup go?

Because they have a specialcoating inside, paper coffee cupscan’t be recycled with paper. Theyare, in fact, processed with TetraPak-type containers, milk and juicecartons, and paper ice cream tubs. The lids are polystyrene andrecycled with Styrofoam!

So what does that mean for you?

Empty the contents, separate thelid from the cup and into the bluebin they both go!
