Dear residents,
On behalf of Town of Aurora staff, I’d like to thank you for working together to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to our environment. Your active participation in various environmental campaigns is continuing to make a difference.
To date, the Town has taken part in several waste-reduction programs and green initiatives. These include the Green Bin program, energy retrofits in our Town facilities, our investment in renewable energy through Bullfrog Power® and the installation of idle-free zones at Town-owned facilities.
I am happy to report that resident participation in our weekly Green Bin and Blue Box programs – as well as TurtleIsland Recycling’s Metal Item Scheduled Pickup program – continues to increase, improving our Town’s waste diversion, while proving the benefits of sustainable alternatives within our community.
With our five-year Corporate Environmental Action Plan (CEAP) now in place, the Town will strive to implement new,and maintain existing, green initiatives that protect and enhance the natural environment, promote environmental sustainability and conserve resources.
Working together as environmental stewards will not only improve, but preserve the cleanliness of our community, ensuring a greener Aurora for future generations.
Sincerely,Neil GarbeChief Administrative Officer (CAO)
Neil Garbe

Respect your community; be a good neighbourWhen it comes to managing your waste and recycling, please be considerate and helpful to others.
Take these steps to make your street tidier and safer:• Secure garbage and recyclables so nothing blows loose and becomes litter. • Be vigilant in securing waste and recyclables against animals.• Offer to carry bags and bins to the curb for neighbours who have difficulty doing so.• Place bags and bins carefully at the curb so that pedestrians using wheelchairs, walkers
or strollers can pass safely on the sidewalks. • Remove emptied bins from the sidewalk as soon as you can. • Offer to accept organic waste from neighbours for your backyard composter.• If you don’t compost, offer your fall leaves to a neighbour who does, or start a local
gardening project for any public areas in the neighbourhood.• If an item was not collected as expected, please do not leave it at the curb while
you resolve the problem.

Construction & demolition wasteConstruction and demolition waste is NOT collected at the curbside in our municipality.
Construction and demolition waste consists mainly of concrete, brick, asphalt, metals, wood and gypsum (drywall). Guided by the 4R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover), you can help lessen theimpact on the environment by diverting some of this waste through our various programs.
Help reduce the amount of waste that ends up in a landfill by recycling your leftover building supplies atYork Region's Community Environmental Centre in the City of Vaughan.
What you can do to help our environment:• Donate construction and demolition materials that you don’t need to a local affiliate of Habitat for
Humanity or a similar organization. • Check with local salvagers before purchasing new products. Used or excess building supplies
such as lumber, cabinets, doors, windows and flooring in good condition are available for greatlyreduced prices.
• Consider renovating your space instead of completely gutting and rebuilding it.
See page 3 for the waste depot location map, hours of operation and disposal rates.

Home grown goodnessBuy local! Our region is blessed with some of the bestagricultural crops and livestock in the world.
When you choose locally-grown food, you not only enjoy the freshest taste, you also support economic growth and protect the environment.
From farm to plate, the average North American meal travels over 2400 kilometres (1500 miles)* by fuel-guzzling, emission-spewing trucks and airplanes. By buying locally-grown food, you help reduce pollution, including greenhouse gases that causeglobal warming. Choose a healthier option - help support our local farming industry bybuying local meat, produce and dairy products.
Tips for buying local: • Check out the Aurora Farmers’ Market (Open every Saturday from May to October
from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.).• Visit a “you-pick” farm.• Choose local foods from your local butcher or produce store. • Ask your grocery store to stock more locally-grown food.• Start your own garden.
If you’re hungry for better taste and a cleaner environment, simply reach for locally-grown food. *Source: Worldwatch Institute

The dirt on backyard compostingComposting is a natural process in which organic materials decompose and become a nutrient-rich soilamendment. Your lawn and garden will love it! Composting aids erosion control, promotes soil fertility and stimulates healthy root development. It also cuts down the amount of organic waste going to landfills.Composting can take 3 to 18 months depending on how well the pile is maintained. Compost is ready when its texture is crumbly and has a pleasant earthy smell. To purchase a composter, please visit Aurora's Operation's Yard at 9 Scanlon Court. Composters are $10 each (prices are subject to change).
Tips for successful composting:• Keep your compost pile moist, but not wet.• Aerate by turning the pile occasionally. • Avoid thick layers of any one material, such as grass.• Layer “brown” materials (e.g. dried leaves, dead plants and shredded newspaper),
with “green” materials (e.g. plant trimmings, fruit and vegetable peels and cores).• A one inch (2.5 cm) layer of finished compost or garden soil spread on top of kitchen
scraps will speed things up.• Bury fruit and vegetable trimmings at least 6 inches deep.• Smaller pieces decompose faster. • Never add meat, fish or dairy items.• Compost during winter. The freezing and thawing process helps to break down materials.

DATED ELECTRONICS?RECYCLE THEM.
To see what’s recyclable, where to drop items off and when other collection events are coming, visit:
recycleyourelectronics.ca
When in doubt, don’t throw it outOur homes are filled with many municipal
hazardous or special waste (MHSW)
materials that need extra care when they’ve
reached the end of their useful lives — things
like paints, batteries and pharmaceuticals.
Throwing them in the garbage or pouring
them down the drain can be dangerous
to our families and our environment.
That’s why we’re encouraging Ontarians
to follow the BUD rule:
Buy only what you need
Use it all up
Drop off the rest and we’ll recycle,
reprocess or safely dispose of it
These materials can be taken to Orange Drop
locations in retail stores, pharmacies,
municipal recycling depots.
