PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Fellow Senepol Breeders,

Another year has come and gone and with it we enjoyed another educa-tional and fun convention. This years theme was reproduction and the speakers could not have been better. Our first speaker was Dr. Ky Pohler from the University of Tennessee. Dr. Pohler is a reproductive physiologist who is presently conducting research about embryo mortality. We also had the pleasure of hearing from James Chenevert and his wife Hilda, the owners of Continental Genetics. Their facility specializes in semen collection and embryo production. We were all able to learn more about what their facility can offer us, as well as all of the options for shipping our genetic products after they are produced.

The convention was attended by a diverse group of breeders from many different regions including Brazil, South Africa, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the U.S.

As most of you already know, Hans announced his retirement at this years convention. I know he would have liked to continue serving the SCBA on and on, but he has decided to take a less active role in the SCBA.

Hans, I personally want to thank you for all of your years of service to the SCBA and the Senepol breed. I know I will be contacting you from time to time for not only your opinion and advice but also for your historical perspective. Enjoy you retirement, my friend!

I have often heard that change is the only true constant and this truth inevi-

tably reminds me of a quote from Eric Hoffer that goes something like this, In times of change learners will in-herit the earth, while the learned will find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists. The SCBA is proud to have a board full of diverse individuals with rich life and business experiences. Our board members are diverse in age, geography, education and back-ground, but they all share an innate ability to think outside of the box. Our directors are learners.

There are advances being made in genetics everyday and it will not be long before the knowledge gained through genetic testing will be one of a cattle breeders most valuable tools. Through its breeders, the SCBA has been proactive in genetic testing of Senepol cattle for various traits. Iden-tifying the positives of your herd is a must for improvement, but identifying the negatives is just as important. An old and experienced purebred cattle producer once told me that your herd is a result of everything you choose to breed for and of everything you refuse to breed against. Read that again and let it sink in.

I have a very positive outlook for our association and for Senepol cattle. We are fast becoming a breed that has worldwide industry acceptance because of its unparalleled heat toler-ance embodied in a docile bos tau-rus animal . Learn what the industry needs and produce cattle they can use and you will be a guaranteed success.

Vulvanlo a leer y asimlenlo.

The 39th Anniversary SCBA Convention was June 1st - 3rd, 2016 in Baton Rouge, LA USA this year and was a grand time for everyone. We started things off with a cocktail social on Wednesday evening at the hotel lounge where everyone could register, receive their convention packets and meet and greet in a casual, fun environment.

Thursday morning we held the SCBAs first business meet-ing where members and guests introduced themselves and we covered a variety of SCBA topics. This year the SCBA hosted guests from South Africa, Guatemala and Brazil and it was good to hear from them. We also heard from nominees to the Board of Directors as to their goals for the SCBAs future.

After the meeting we were honored to have a presentation by Ky G. Pohler, PhD, Reproduction Physiologist from University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. His presentation on Em-bryo Mortality was very educational and well received. With a break for lunch his presentation continued into the afternoon. Later in the afternoon we were joined by the Continental Ge-netics team: James and Hilde Chenevert, Mandy Cooper and Mona Olinde. An educational and entertaining group who most of us have worked with in the past but met for the first time during this convention. They made a short presentation about what CG has been busy doing over the last year and prepping us for our tour of the facilities planned for Friday.

Friday started with the conclusion of our business meeting and election of new members of the board. The afternoon was another educational opportunity when we headed to the

Lunch on Friday was hosted by Continental Genetics and was an appreciated example of Louisiana cuisine and hospitality. This was followed by a trip out to see where some Senepol cows being flushed reside. Due to the heavy rain that day we were a bit limited as to what we could see but look forward to another opportunity soon.

Our annual banquet was held at the Crowne Plaza where we enjoyed a delicious steak dinner, award presentations and the fun auction. This years award winners were as follows:

The Frits E. Lawaetz Award for Outstanding contributor to the Senepol breed went to James Chenevert of Continental Genetics. James and the whole Continental Genetics team have worked with the Senepol breed and breeders diligently for years. The SCBA appreciates their passion for the breed and all they do to promote the breed as well as export quality Senepol genetics around the world.

The Mario Gasperi Award for Breeder of the Year went to Mark Sanders for his consistent and continuing effort working both as a breeder and with breeders to help Senepol thrive internationally.

Mario Bruun, President and Founder of ITC Group and Ca-bana San Pablo, has more than 25 years of progressively responsible experience directing as many as 300 employees in technological companies located in Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile, Peru and United States. Mario has led these companies through start-up, survival, turnaround and growth.

Marios greatest strengths are his creativity, drive and leader-ship. He thrives on challenges, particularly those on creativity and innovation. Among some of his significant achievements, Mario introduced the first Of-fice Center Chain in Bolivia (similar to Kinkos) in the early 90s. In the early 2000s, he installed and implemented the first Telemedicine Hospital Net-work in Latin America, based in Argentina. In 2005, he built the first state-of-the-art intelli-gent building and the first Tier 4 datacenter in the region, in Bolivia.

Because of his passion for wild-life and life in the countryside, Mario purchased a ranch back in 2008 in which he decided to start a different and creative project for Bolivian market. He invested and developed the Senepol breed with the help and support from Sacramento Farms and SCBA good friends. Senepol has solidly become alternative number one in the market for cross breeding.

Born and raised in Santa Cruz, Bolivia (South America), Ma-rio still resides there with his wife Alba and his three grown children. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M University in Texas and a Master of Business Adminis-tration (MBA) degree from NUR University in Bolivia.

I have spent most of my life working with registered cattle. First with Polled Herefords, then Brafords and Angus. We ran approx. 150 to 175 brood cows. This was our only source of income. When my Dad passed away in 2013 my wife and I decided to sell out. We have since purchased a smaller farm in Northeast Tennessee.

We soon realized we had to have cattle again. After looking at several different breeds we chose Senepol. We purchased 20 females from Mark Sanders owner of Millertown Sene-pol June of 2015. I do not know of any breed of cattle that can have a more positive effect for people that have a Cross Breeding program. No breed of cattle is perfect, but Senepol cattle have the traits that will improve any herd.

I want to thank you for the opportunity to work with you to promote our breed of cattle. I feel like any time one of us sells cattle to a new customer it is a benefit to us all. Let us all work together to make our organization grow and benefit us all.

Respectfully yours Dan Queener,

Respetuosamente, Dan Queener

This year the SCBA took a little extra time before the 2016 Convention to visit with several of our USA breeders and their herds. Mark Sanders, a member of the Board of Di-rectors hosted 6 international travelers and SCBA members from South Africa, Guatemala and Brazil. They were joined by our guest speaker, Dr. Ky Pohler and drove from Tennes-see through several states to the hotel in Baton Rouge, LA. You can read his trip report on the next page.

I also decided to take this opportunity to make a road trip of it by driving from Wilmington, NC to the Convention in Baton Rouge, LA. This gave me the opportunity to visit with SCBA members as I drove through South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Missis-sippi and Louisiana. I would like to thank all those who welcomed me into their homes, introduced me to their herds and shared their stories and time with me.

We wish we could have visited with more of our breeders and hope to work together to put together Se-nepol events that will bring members together when-ever time and travel allow.

Power Line Farm (1000335)

Owner Bobby Griffin has been an active member of the SCBA for decades. He has served the SCBA as a member of the Board of Direc-tors, as well. We met at his farm in south central Georgia to show me his grass fed herd. Power Line has been very active in the Senepol breed-up program resulting in quality Fullblood Se-nepol that produce highly sought Sene-pol genetics as well as increased value at the feedlots.

SCBA ROAD TRIP

Hipp Farms (1100869) and Huckaville Farms (1100868)

In the Florida Panhandle/south Alabama area we have a sev-eral Senepol breeders. My first visit in the area was with a couple of new SCBA members who joined last year. Jason Hipp of Hipp Farms and Curtis Mitchell of Huckaville Farms chose to bring Senepol into their herds after looking into sev-eral different breeds. Once they learned all that Senepol has to offer they bought some from different breeders in the area.

Their farms are a few short miles from each other so it was an easy trek to meet them both, as well as their kids, and see their properties. Their herds are a good mix of different breeds that they want to use as breed-up animals with the Senepol focus. As a person fairly new to the breed myself, Ill be following these breeders as they continue to grow. An exciting time for breeders, for sure.

Five Star Senepol Farm (1100431)

Next I drove about 20 miles south to Five Star Senepol in Adel, GA. George and Myrna Fiveash first joined the SCBA almost a decade ago and have been active Senepol breeders ever since, having raised over 75 registered Pure and Full blood Senepol.

We spent quite some time touring their gorgeous property and interacting with their equally gorgeous animals. It was obvious that they take great pride in their herd and for good reason.

Granjas Hipp (1100869) y Granjas Huckaville (1100868)

Granja Senepol Cinco Estrellas (1100431)

MJGJ Ranch (1100528)

Another breeder in the Florida Pan-handle/south Ala-bama area is MJGJ Ranch. Members since 2009 Re-becca and Michael

Watkins have raised dozens of percent, pure and full blood Senepol.

Due to his busy schedule as a commercial pilot I did not get the opportunity to meet Mike but I finally did get to meet Re-becca face-to-face. She and I had spoken several times over phone and email, both learning a little more each time as we worked to catch things up for their herd.

Their herd was im-pressive with prime examples of what Senepol can be.

FC Ranch (1001435)

The last ranch I was able to visit was FC Ranch in Crestview, FL where Frank and Chris Wierer welcomed me with open arms. Mem-ber since 1995, FC Ranch has been raising percent to fullblood Se-nepol for decades.

Their herd was flush with new born calves and soon to birth dams.

Chris and Frank brought up some good ideas that the SCBA hopes to put into action this year and continue into the future.

Rancho MJGJ (1100528)

Note from Rebecca:

I want to thank all of the people who I got to visit with on this trip. I know some of you live 20+ miles from your herds and the fact that you all took time out of your busy days to open your homes and ranches to me is humbling. I wish I was a better story teller and photographer because I did not do you justice in this brief article. Neither words nor photos can express the warmth and joy I experienced on this journey. I hope to get to see you all again soon and that I or other SCBA team members get this same opportunity again with SCBA breeders everywhere.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Cheers, Rebecca

Saludos, Rebecca

Viaje en reversa a EUA

5/29 - 5/30 Guests arrive: Carlos and Kadu Battistella from Brazil (Senepol 77K); Julio Lainfiesta (Finca Maria Olga) and Jaime Recinos from Guatemala; Wilhelm Oosthuysen and Danie Nieuwoudt from Senepol Cattle Breeders Society of South Africa all arrive into Knoxville, Tennessee

5/30 Guest speaker, Dr. Ky Pohler and the rest of the travelers loaded in our rented van and we began our tour starting with a visit to one of Millertown Senepols farms where I keep yearling heifers and a few cows. After about an hour of picture taking and Q&A we visited another one of my farms where I keep a group of cows that are close to calving and cow/calf pairs. After another session of picture taking and Q&A we continued on to Dan Queeners Rivers Edge Farm, in Surgoinsville, TN where he has a nice herd that he is crossing with Red Angus. Dan explained that the reason he become a Senepol breeder was because of the heat his cattle would have to deal with because of his farms lack of shade and that his market for the composite he is breeding will have the same conditions. Dan is a well-respected third generation seed stock producer from Georgia. Our travelers are very interested in herd improvement through genetics from the USA and they ask a lot of questions about experience and availability. We left Dans ranch and continued on to another of my farms where I keep herd sires and developing young bulls. Everyone is impressed by the uniformity, disposition and condition of the animals. It is important to them that my herd is entirely grass developed.

SCBA TRIP REPORT

By Mark Sanders

5/29/2016 - 6/11/2016

Reverse trip to USA

16

5/31- At around 8:AM I picked up everyone including Dr Pohler and we started our trip through the South to the other ranches. We made a stop at Lookout Mountain Genetics in Fort Payne where we toured a semen collection facility. From there we visited Teddy Gentry in Fort Payne Alabama. We arrived there at around 10:30AM where we were greeted by Teddy who did a tour of his herd and gave short talk about the genetics he was developing and that he had to offer. We left there at around 12PM and continued on to Swannee Carv-ers ranch located in Horton Alabama. He and his wife had a wonderful lunch prepared for us upon our arrival. After eat-ing we toured his ranch and looked at his nice Senepol herd. After a lot of picture taking and Q&A we left and continued on to Carl Parkers ranch, Parkers Senepol, in Rogersville Alabama. Carl drove us around to his different ranch loca-tions where we saw many good Senepol cows and bulls. Carl handed out a flyer with info on the genetics he had for sale. Carl fielded a lot of questions about his genetic offerings and of course a lot of pictures were taken. We all left there including Carl to eat at a nice local country restaurant. We continued on from there to spend the night in Tuscaloosa, AL.

6/1- We left Tuscaloosa at around 10AM to visit Earl Kings ranch, King Farms, in Jackson, AL. We were joined my Earls son, SCBA Director Ronnie King, along the way and he es-corted us to his fathers ranch. Earl and his granddaughter had nice lunch prepared for us. After lunch we toured his ranch and looked at the bull and cows he was developing. After much talk and many pictures we continued on to John DeGrootes Oak Lane Ranch, in Pascagoula, MS. We arrived at about 3PM and immediately started a tour of Johns ranch. John talked about the genetics he had to offer and fielded many questions. We left Johns ranch and continued on to Baton Rouge arriving in time for the meet and greet hosted by the SCBA.

6/2- We attended the SCBA national convention where we were treated to a wonderful talk by Dr. Ky Pohler about repro-ductive physiology and genetic improvement. After Dr.Pohler spoke James Chenevert and his wife, Hilde, spoke about their semen and embryo collection facility located in Baton Rouge. A lot of their talk revolved around how hard it is to deal with both the US and foreign governments when trying to get health papers approved for export.

6/3- We went to Continental Genetics to tour their collection facility and to look at the Senepol bulls they are currently col-

17

lecting. James said they are currently working on a website that will show available semen inventory and price. When this site is done you will be able to order semen just by filling in the customer info and choosing which semen you want. Dr. Pohler flew home at around 5PM.

6/4- Julio Lainfiesta and Jaime Recinos returned to Guate-mala. Wilhelm Oosthuysen and Danie Nieuwoudt continued on by air to visit Sebastaio De Aguiar owner of Sacramento Farms in Okeechobee, FL. Kadu and Carlos Battistella and I drove our rented van back to Knoxville, TN

6/5-6/8 Kadu and Carlos stayed in Tennessee where we re-visited the animals at Millertown Senepols and discussed all the activities of the previous days. Both Battistellas are very excited about the future of their ranch, Senepol 77K, espe-cially about the prospects of the use of the new genetics he saw on this trip.

6/8-6/10 Kadu, Carlos and I flew to Florida to visit Sacra-mento Farms as well. We toured the ranch looking at various groups of cattle. First we looked at some very uniform yearling heifers. Bulls were next. We saw about eight mature herd bulls. Later in the visit Sebastiao had his herd manager bring differ-ent groups of cow/calf pairs into the pens so we could have a close look. There were many good pairs. We were happy to see the uniformity in his herd.

6/11- We left for the airport early to catch our flights home.

Summary

I am confident that this trip created bonds and a mutual trust between breeders. Trust is a huge hurdle when doing business and when the business is international it is more difficult.

These breeders were able to see many different phenotypes in production. This will help them to map out a strategy for their own management system. The genetic offerings were many and diversified. This was something that the South African were pleasantly surprised to find.

There were a few shipments of genetics (semen and embryos) that went to all three of these countries in the first quarter of this year. I am confident that this trip will result in sales in the future.

to Farms (Granjas Sacramento) en Okeechobee, Florida.
