We would like to welcome

all of our new students

and families to Kidman

Park Primary School.

On Wednesday the 28th January, Ebony Strong and Danielle Tylor our Foundation educators,

conducted the first of two parent evening workshops. Over twenty five parents came along to

learn more about reading development and strategies they can use to support their child’s

reading at home. Parents were also given some activities designed to help them understand how

difficult the reading process can be for some students and that reading is not just decoding the

words on a page.

Ebony and Danielle also talked about Bug Club, a program the Early Years use at KPPS that enables

our students to access e-books at home while being monitored by their class room educator.

More details about Bug Club will be talked about at Acquaintance Night in week 4 .

The second workshop for all Foundation student’s parents will be held on Wednesday, February

4th in the library at 6.oopm. This will be on Inquiry play base learning.

THE JOY PROJECT - Making a difference to the lives of our

students and wider community For all KPPS staff the school year started with an inspiring and energetic two

days of work with international speaker Amanda Gore. Everyone was inspired

by her energy, inspiration and passion to create a joyful world. We have been

motivated to make our school a place of joy where everyone feels safe,

motivated to learn and caring for others. The Joy Project has started at KPPS –

we hope that everyone will join the journey to help transform the lives of our

whole community.

Talk to your child about: The PEARL Room, gratitude glasses, Circles of Joy,

positive music, Joy Jigs, TaDa moments etc to check his or her engagement

in this project.

Desy Pantelos is leading the whole school change with all students visiting

her in the PEARL Room. Desy will be using a variety of different activities

and tools from Amanda’s work and Positive Education to create whole

school change.

Our student Joy Action Team will also add another layer of positiveness

around the school.

Classes are currently focussing on a variety of different joyful activities, later

this term we revisit Gratitude and next term we will move onto new topics.

Our next newsletter will outline in detail the Joy Project.

How does this help student learning outcomes? Is the Joy Project really

needed? Mental health is becoming our #1 health issue. Depression is

impacting on the lives of many. We all need the skills to be optimistic, to get

along, to listen, laugh, have hope, forgive and have inner peace.

Imagine the resiliency of our students if they have this inner strength to be

joyful and then the learning that will come from that place.

IT’S EXCITING TO BE BACK!

Our school is certainly a positive and happy place with students getting along, learning the new routines of their

classrooms and making new friends. We often worry about how our children will survive in a new class, with new

students and a new teacher. But, change is a part of life and with the right preparation success can be achieved. A

number of our classes have ‘Post It’ walls where positive comments about school can be made. Rating high on the

lists has been making new friends. Being able to mix, work and learn with a variety of peers is certainly a skill

needed for resiliency.

GREAT NEW STAFF

Joining the KPPS team this year is Michael Gibbins (P2) and Debra Carmichael (Japanese). Michael is new to our

school and Deb has worked at KPPS a few years ago. We hope both enjoy working at our school and we look

forward to their contributions to the learning and lives of our students.

We are excited to welcome back to KPPS this year, Alex Stojanovic (U6), Nicola Holmes (P4) and Kath Lucas

(Learning Centre). Like Michael, Danielle Tylor also starts 2015 as a permanent member of the teaching team.

Welcome Back!

Deb Carmichael is the new Japanese teacher at KPPS, teaching R – 7. She used to

teach Chinese and now she is teaching Japanese. The last school that she taught at

was West Beach Primary School but she has taught at K.P.P.S before as a TRT

(Temporary Relieving Teacher). She has enjoyed teaching at K.P.P.S so far.

Deb has lived in Japan for 5 years with her children going to school there. She wants

to teach us about her Japanese experience and what it’s like to live in Japan. She

also wanted to have some contact with Belinda Sensei, our Japanese teacher, who

has gone to Japan for a year but will be back in 2016.

We hope she will have a fantastic year at K.P.P.S

By Portia, Ellie and Wendy

Nicola Holmes In 2015 Aleeshya and I were placed in P4 with Miss Holmes. She is teaching a year 5/6

class, we have noticed that the classroom is a positive environment.

Miss Holmes has been very positive with us so far this term. We believe that she will be

an awesome teacher for us this year. Miss Holmes has showed us that we need to

have a growth mindset included with a positive mind.

She has not given any of her student stationary for a reason she has put heaps of

stationary in the middle of the classroom to teach us to share. Every morning P4 has

focus students who come up and tell us one positive thing that happened to them

over the weekend.

Miss Holmes has told us that she would like to teach us math in a more positive way so

we don’t get bored with maths. This year we have got our spelling words and Miss Holmes has made them all

positive words, also in spelling we have to do LCWC (look, cover, write, check) which is where you look at the

word, cover it then write the word to get better at spelling it.

This year we are excited to have Miss Holmes as our teacher, we hope she has a fabulous year with the P4

students ahead. By Siobhan and Aleeshya

Michael Gibbins Michael Gibbins is the new Year 6/7 teacher teaching P2. He has been teaching at

different schools for 5 years. He first worked in Dubai for 2 years, then he taught at

Yorke Peninsula for another 2 years and then at Thorndon Primary School. Last year he

worked at Kidman Park Primary School for 3 days and enjoyed it very much so this

year he is teaching again.

He has taught about mindsets where he taught us about growth and fixed mindsets,

fingerprints where we got to work out our difference kind of fingerprints and survey

the rest of the class to see what they got. Also he taught about famous successful

Australians, like Douglas Mawson which we did a work sheet on and other interesting

things.

He wants a positive environment in the classroom, so he is making a happy zone for

the people that feel upset. In the happy zone there is a quote wall, post it window

and a sitting area with comfy red chairs. We also decorated the class by making a

piece of adjective art.

We hope he enjoys the rest of his year at K.P.P.S
