North Coast Cricket Council

President’s Report 2015-16

In reviewing the season just completed, it would have to be considered a successful one, with

some great results achieved by our players through selection in higher representative sides, a

competitive inter-district competition in both the seniors and juniors, an efficiently run and

well organised junior academy program and tours schedule, and a number of significant

events hosted throughout the Council.

To begin with, the Council was well represented in all of the Zone and other representative

teams as follows:-

Congratulations to the successful Associations in our own NCCC inter-district competitions.

The inter-district Premiers were:-

U/12s - Coffs Harbour



O/40s - Clarence River

1st X1 - Nambucca Valley

The district championship went to the Coffs Harbour Association.

Congratulations to all those who participated and those who were successful. Special mention

must go to the Nambucca Valley 1st XI who took out the major premiership for the first time

since 1999. Furthermore, when they defeated Clarence River at Ellem Oval on January 10th,

2016 they achieved their first victory since December 5th, 2004 when they were successful

against Lower Clarence at Thistle Park. During that intervening period their 32 matches

yielded 25 defeats and 7 wash-outs, so it was very pleasing to see their investment in a youth

based selection policy deliver such outstanding results. They were well led by Josh Bartlett,

who was also the spearhead of their bowling attack, as evidenced by his six wicket haul

against Clarence River.

In the junior inter-district competition, it was great to see the Lower Clarence Junior

Association again fielding sides in all the junior age groups. Their under 12’s were very

competitive and were runners-up in the final, so this augurs well for the seasons ahead.

One of the more enjoyable moments of the season for myself was watching the under 14’s

round six fixture between Coffs Harbour and Clarence River at Coffs Leisure Park in late

January. The match went right down to the wire and ended in a tie, but most importantly it

was played in a great spirit. The enjoyment of the kids was evident and the good

sportsmanship on display at the end of the match was a pleasure to witness. Thanks to all

involved who make this possible, including the coaches, scorers and parents.

Leading into the finals, the executive made the decision to restore and update the junior major

premiership shields, to record all previous premiers and to make the shields available for

presentation to the winners on finals day. A project for next season will be to locate the

senior major premiership shields so that similar restoration work can take place.

A review of Country Cricket NSW competitions held during the season shows that the Coffs

Harbour Association reached the semi-finals of the McDonalds Country Cup, going down to

Parkes at Tamworth in late December. Last season’s Country Shield winners, Clarence River

were defeated by Tweed in the third round of the Cup.

In the McDonalds Country Plate competition, Nambucca Valley unfortunately were forced to

forfeit to Port Panthers in the first round after a break-down in communication resulted in

them being unable to field a side for the away trip to Wauchope. Lower Clarence were

defeated in the second round by the eventual runners-up, Macquarie Hotel.

For this season, the SCG Country Cup, which had previously offered country cricketers the

opportunity to play on the Sydney Cricket Ground was replaced by the Plan B Regional Bash

T20 knock-out competition. The Coffs Coast Chargers were one of the 16 regional franchises

competing, and they were in effect a NCCC Opens team.

Getting a firm commitment from our strongest cricketers to participate proved challenging

and the Chargers were knocked out in the first round by the Northern Rivers Rock (FNCCC).

For next season, perhaps a selection focus on a core of younger players, with improved

athleticism may hopefully lead to better results.

With the wide variety of cricket programs on offer during the season, including the CCNSW

competition dates, NCZ trial dates and our own junior tours, it can create challenges with

formulating the draw for our NCCC inter-district competitions. Feedback from the season

just completed was that the early January round of senior inter-district was not popular as

Associations struggled to get sides on the park with players unavailable. Hopefully that can

be avoided in the coming season.

The John McMahon Scholarships for the North Coast Cricket Council's Junior & Young

Cricketer of the Year were again on offer. Raman Phoonie was awarded the U16 scholarship

whilst the U19 scholarship was awarded to Amy Riddell. Congratulations go to both these

fine players for their outstanding commitment to the game.

The North Coast Academy Program for 2015 went in a new direction under the guidance of

our new Regional Director of Coaching, Terry Baldwin, who was ably assisted by the

organisation of Program Managers Tom and Amanda Mann. Terry and Tom introduced

several positive changes to the program in 2015, including bringing all age groups together to

train on the same day, and the use of specialist coaches such as Bill Newell, Peter Ford and

Brendan Lyon. The feedback from parents and players alike was again very positive.

Congratulations to Harrison Nicholson who was awarded the NCCC Academy Scholarship

for his dedication to cricket, and for his contribution in other areas like helping at club,

association and school level cricket. Congratulations also to Raman Phoonie who was

awarded the Director of Coaching Scholarship for excelling at the Academy in training,

attitude and performance.

NCCC again provided further development opportunities with the U16’s competing in the

Stan Austin Carnival at Taree and the Gold Coast Tour including an U13’s side in addition to

the U12’s, U14’s and U15’s.

Unfortunately the Stan Austin Carnival was severely affected by wet weather, with only 37

overs being completed on day one before the teams were forced indoors for the remaining two

days.

The Gold Coast tour saw all age groups playing four matches each over three days against

Cricket Gold Coast and The Southport School. The U15’s achieved three wins, the U12’s

two wins and the U14’s and U13’s had one win each. The individual highlight from the tour

was Eli Fahey’s century on the first day for the U15’s against Cricket Gold Coast.

Coffs Harbour played host to the Under 17’s Male State Challenge during August 2015, with

officials and players being impressed by the facilities and grounds at the Coffs Sport &

Leisure Park.

Later in the season, a Sheffield Shield fixture was held at the CEX International Stadium

between New South Wales and South Australia. Ben Rohrer led the Blues to victory on the

final day with an undefeated 109.

The NCCC cannot function without many willing helpers and the following people must be

acknowledged for their efforts for the Council:-

Regional Director of Coaching, Terry Baldwin, and his assistant coaches, Paul Symons, Chris

Neal, Brendan Palmer, Andrew Cahill, Matthew Bailey, Tom Mann and Rod Buckle. Many

thanks for all their efforts with our young players throughout the year.

Tom Mann assumed the role of Program Manager and our sincere thanks must go to Tom for

all his organisation and management of the junior programs. Tom introduced a NCCCA

Facebook group as a means of improving communication and for publicising events, and it

has also been utilised as a useful tool for disseminating training tips and videos to the kids.

Our thanks again go to Ken Robinson, for his efforts in regard to the NCC Umpires & Scorers

Association. Ken has indicated that he will be standing down as the Zone Umpires

representative, and his contribution has been greatly appreciated over many seasons. Thanks

also to Rob Pye, Shane Luland and Paul Harris who represented the umpires at Council

meetings throughout the season.

My thanks to vice-president, Jeff Hackett who provided wise counsel on numerous occasions,

and his many years of administrative experience proved invaluable.

Janet Grieve in her first season as treasurer did a terrific job. Janet was also heavily involved

in the organisation of the junior tours, and it is testimony to her organisational skills that both

tours ran so smoothly. Janet was instrumental in the application for an ABN for the Council.

Another of the major achievements was the establishment of EFT payment of suppliers,

which greatly assisted with the executive geographically split between Coffs Harbour and

Grafton.

Financially, we finished the season in deficit, however this can be attributed to the need to

purchase a replacement trailer for transport of gear and training equipment, at a cost of

$3,960. We have also stocked up with new lines of merchandise, including track pants and

hoodies in addition to the usual shirts, training shorts and caps.

After four seasons of sterling work in the role of secretary, Leanne Statham has tendered her

resignation, and we wish her and her family all the best for the future. Without Leanne’s firm

grasp of the running of the Council, I would have found it most challenging in the role of

President. We thank you Leanne for all your time and efforts over many years. It has been a

pleasure working with you.

Echoing the words of former President, Ian Dinham, “You have done an outstanding job and

you are leaving with everything up to date and in great shape. We hope you have enjoyed the

journey as much as everyone else has enjoyed working with you to continue developing the

great game of cricket. Congratulations and enjoy your retirement.”

North Coast cricket would not exist without these people and the many volunteers who coach,

umpire and do all the necessary administrative work in their respective Associations of our

Council.

We look forward to another successful season 2016-17 which will see Clarence River

Association host the McDonalds Country Cup and Plate finals in late December 2016, as well

as the Canterbury Country Colts (NZ) scheduled to tour in January 2017 with Macksville

hosting a match.

REGIONAL DIRECTOR OF COACHING REPORT

It has been a very busy year for NCCC juniors. We started with selections for Kookaburra

Cup, Bradman Cup and Northern Razorback 13s and 14s teams.

Well done to the players selected, Aidan Cahill (Razorback’s 13s), Hayden Ensbey

(Kookaburra Cup and Razorback’s 14s). Special mention to Ethan Munro who was called

into the Kookaburra Cup, and drove to Griffith at 5 minutes notice. He played very well

when he got there.

Raman Phoonie, Dylan Cleaver, Connor Martin, Jared Baldwin and Austyn Nugent

(Bradman Cup). Austyn and Jared went on to make the Basil Sellers under 16s State

Challenge to be played on April 11th to 15 at Blacktown. Raman could be considered

very unlucky to miss out after some excellent performances in the carnival.

Stan Austin U16s Carnival, Taree:

The carnival was a complete wash out with Taree getting over 300 ml of rain through the

week.

Thanks to Janet Grieve for organising and managing the team. Also thanks to Jonklass’s

buses for the use of their bus for the tour. Very disappointing for the boys on their last

tour for NCCC. They still enjoyed themselves and even got to play some indoor cricket

to keep busy.

Gold Coast NCCC Tour:

We had a slightly bigger tour this year with 4 ages (12s, 13s, 14s and 15s). There were

some excellent individual results across all age groups. Thanks to coaches and managers,

Rod Buckle, Tom Mann, Matt Bailey, Chris Neal, Brendan Palmer, Paul Symons and

Terry Stephens.

Special thanks to Janet Grieve for organising and managing the tour and we hope she is

available again next year.

Under 18s Games

The under 18s games at South West Rocks and Casino were well supported by the players.

We had a comfortable win against MNC at SWR, and a close loss to FNC at Casino.

Unfortunately there were 9 players away with 1st grade rep or CHS games on that day.

We have managed to get 8 players into the Zone under 19s squad. The squad will be

reduced to a 13 man team to play in the Country Championships in September. Well

done to Zak Honeybrook, Mitchell Kroehnert, Brodie Bartlett, Jack Ireland, Alec

Baldwin, Jamie Bekis, Austyn Nugent and Jared Baldwin on their selection.

There is a need to work out our draw so the players aren’t forced to choose between Inter-

district games and NCCC teams.

2016 NCCC Academy

Plans are well under way. We are including an under 17s/18s group this year. They will

be doing a short program of; level 1 course for those interested, 1 training day and 1 game.

We will do this as a pre-season for 2016-17 season.

Other ages are currently being worked out. There will only be minor changes to last

year’s program.

North Coast Cricket Umpires & Scorers Association Inc.

President’s Report 2015-16

Following a very successful pre-season Umpire Training Course facilitated by NSWCUSA

CEO Darren Goodger with assistance from Paul Dilley and Gary Crombie member numbers

increased for last season. All Umpire Associations benefitted from the two day session held

in Coffs Harbour.

As a consequence umpire standards are improving across the Council and more matches are

being officiated by our members resulting in less frivolous reports of player behavior. This

does not mean that we can cease trying to improve our knowledge or performance, far from

it, players will continue to test you every time you step onto the field. It is up to our members

to continue self-assessment after each match and learn from mistakes.

Our Secretary, Rob Pye, is arranging an Umpire Development Day in July/August and it is

expected that all umpires will attend this five hour session to pick up tips from Darren and

other senior members.

During the season Rob Pye took an opportunity to officiate in the L J Hooker League in the

Far North Coast Council and in addition he travelled to Sydney on several occasions to

officiate in the SCA 2nd Grade Competition in an effort to improve his standards and

confidence.

Bruce Baxter was appointed to the NSW Country Supplementary Panel and was appointed to

several Country Carnivals during the season. Bruce has been reappointed to the Panel for

2016/17.

Jeff Hackett and Rob Pye were also chosen to officiate in several Country Carnivals during

the season and while not being appointed to the Country Panel, their endeavors have not gone

unrewarded.

Two senior members of North Coast Cricket Umpires & Scorers Association have decided

that they will not be putting the bails back on the stumps this coming season. Former President

of this Association and Life Member, Brian Kennedy, has been held in high regard for decades

by all who have stood with him. Bill McCarron has also decided that he needs to rest after 20

years in the umpire ranks following a long playing career. Between them there is probably

more than a century of experience that we all look up to. Well done gentlemen, we wish you

well for the future.

Thank you to Rob Pye for your administrative skills in handling the Secretarial and Treasury

portfolios for the Association. Your dedication to the task, organisational skills and your

friendship have made my role easy over the last few years.

THE HISTORY OF THE


INAUGURAL MEETING

The inaugural meeting of the North Coast Cricket Council was held at the Coffs Harbour

School of Arts on the 14th September, 1946. The meeting was called by the Orara River Cricket

Association as a result of a resolution moved by their retiring President Mr J.F. Towells. The

resolution read “that in order to foster country cricket on the central North Coast, the Orara

River Cricket Association favours the formation of a Council of Associations”.

Mr Norm Morton, also of Orara chaired the meeting and outlined its purpose, to unite the

cricket associations in this section of the North Coast and to foster cricket in their midst. At

the meeting there were representatives from the Upper Clarence, Lower Clarence, Orara River,

Coffs Harbour, Bellingen River and Nambucca Associations. Apologies were received from

the Dorrigo, Kempsey and Hastings Associations who also indicated their support.

In attendance at the inaugural meeting were Norm Morton, John F. Towells, Lionel Fowler

(Orara River), George Maxwell, Wilbur Ford (Clarence River), Harry Watson and E.C. Gough

(Lower River), Harry Lovett, Henry Ellem, N. Maddocks (Coffs Harbour), Jim Downie, Mr

Daley (Bellingen) and Messers E. Welsh, Walton and Scribener (Nambucca).

ORIGINAL FORMATION

At the meeting it was resolved that a competition be conducted in two zones, North and South.

Every team in each zone was to play each other once and a final was to be played between the

zone finalists.

The original associations in each zone were:

NORTHERN: Orara River, Upper Clarence, Lower Clarence and Coffs Harbour.

SOUTHERN: Dorrigo, Bellingen, Nambucca River, Upper Macleay, Kempsey.

Copmanhurst Association was admitted to the Northern Zone at the Annual Meeting of 1949.

There is no clear indication of when they ceased to play in Inter-district but information

suggests that they only participated for two years.

Also there is no clear information as to when Orara River ceased taking part but last references

to this association appear in the minutes of 1951. Information from locals suggest that this date

would be close to the time that Orara and Coffs combined.

There is also reference to Lower Macleay possibly joining the Southern Zone around 1956 but

there is no evidence to suggest that they ever became part of the inter-district structure. It

would also appear that, although Hastings expressed support for the original concept, that they

did not take part until 1954.

Bellingen River became part of the Northern Zone in 1954. However Dorrigo remained part

of the Southern Zone.

In 1957, N.S.W.C.A brought in boundary changes that saw the formation of the North Coast

Cricket Council and the Mid North Coast Cricket Council as we know them today, apart from

some alterations within each Council.

Nambucca River joined the North Coast Cricket Council, Bellingen and Dorrigo amalgamated

and became part of the same Council to join Coffs Harbour, Grafton and Lower River.

Port Macquarie and Taree joined Upper Macleay and Kempsey in the Mid North Coast Cricket

Council at the same time.

Boundaries remain the same today. There has been the loss of the Upper Macleay, joining

Kempsey after 1966 and the amalgamation of Nambucca with Bellingen in 1984.

RECOGNITION BY N.S.W.C.A

All original contact with N.S.W.C.A., apart from correspondence, in the early days, was

through a yearly meeting with delegates from the Councils and New South Wales, this meeting

corresponding with Country Week in the 1940’s. First reference to Council sending delegates

to this meeting appears as a report in the minutes of the 1949 meeting.

At the same Annual Meeting of 1949 it was moved that the Council seek recognition from

N.S.W.C.A. Things must have happened much faster in those days as only two years later, in

1951, Messers S. Trumper (Chairman) and R. Seddon (Member) representing the N.S.W.C.A.

Country Committee attended the Annual Meeting. This practice of the senior association, of

sending members to meetings, has continued intermittently over the years.

The Council continued to send delegates to meetings after Country Week ceased up until,

according to the minute book, 1956 when the practice ceased until resumption in recent years.

At varying times, N.S.W. would invite Council reps to meetings, particularly when a Touring

side was playing at the S.C.G.

THE COMPETITION

At the inaugural meeting a competition with each association entering one team was formed.

The following year brought about the first mention of a second eleven with restrictions; second

elevens being from second grade or, in the event of the association not conducting a second

grade, second eleven players recognised as that standard (1947); second eleven matches to be

played with an age limit of 25 unless an association cannot field a full team without the

inclusion of some older members (1948); until in 1950 second eleven games could be played

with no limitations.

In 1950 first mention is made of a third eleven with an age limit of 21 years. However it would

appear that the Under 21 competition did not start until 1954. This competition existed until

1960 when it became an Under 18 competition. Finally (1963) it became an Under 19

competition.

Since then we have had the introduction of Under 12’s, Under 14’s and Under 16’s.

DAYS OF PLAY

The 1947 Annual Meeting saw discussion on days of play with “matches be of one day duration

and played on a Saturday, or on the following Sunday or on a holiday during the week following

by mutual arrangement between the two teams concerned”.

Future meetings saw considerable discussion over the years with (1950) “the competition to be

conducted on Sundays but with Associations desirous of playing on Saturdays, the Fixtures

Committee to endeavour to arrange their matches on holidays or the most convenient

Saturdays” and (1953) “Inter-district matches be played on Sundays and holidays, or if both

teams agreeable on a Saturday”. This appeared to be the end of the discussion as no mention

is made as to when definite days and dates were adhered to.

Information gathered from original members of Council shed light on this mini controversy.

Some associations had difficulty fielding teams on Sundays, due to religious beliefs.

PREMIERSHIPS AND FINALS

Meeting minutes indicate that there was always a small question mark as to the playing of finals

with; finals having to be played on the nearest turf wicket (1958); the president and secretaries

action re finals be endorsed (1956) and; finalists to be decided on averages (1959 passed with

three votes recorded against).

Finally (1962) the question was asked “under what rules are the staging of inter-district finals

made” to which the President replied “that no specific rule had been enforced last year but the

executive had acted in the best interests of cricket”. The best interests of cricket had always

appeared to be the main factor throughout but it was from this time that the rules were tightened

up and many rules were changed and re-changed until the “perfect formula” was obtained.

1964 saw the introduction of minor and major premierships as we now know them, the right to

challenge, eligibility to participate and definite rules to which grounds to be used. Definite

times and allowances for replays were not introduced until 1975.

TROPHIES

Mr J.F (Jack) Towells, a long serving member of Orara River, was the instigator of the Council

and President for the first two years. Upon his death the 1948 Annual Meeting authorised the

purchase of the “John Towells Memorial Shield” to be played for by associations with First XI

teams. The shield was later destroyed by fire and was re-established in 1956 for competition.

Mr Allan Fernance donated the “Fernance Shield” on behalf of his family in 1950. It, together

with the “John Towells Memorial Shield” was for 1st XI competition in the Northern Zone.

However in 1964 it was decided that the “Fernance Shield” would be the reward for the Club

Championship of the North Coast Cricket Council.

Also in 1950 the Council accepted the “Ellem Shield” from the Ellem Family of Cricketers.

This shield was the trophy sought after in 2nd XI competition.

In 1954 Wal Tyson, on behalf of his family, donated the “Tyson Family Cup”. This has ever

since been the trophy for the Junior Competition introduced by the Council in the same year.

The start of the “B & J Weiley Shield” is not stated in the records. A Grafton shield, donated

by Bill and John Weiley, publicans and sportspersons, it is the prize for the runners-up for the

Under 19’s.

Publicans John Hillier and Norm Davies, both at one time the hoteliers of the Exchange Hotel,

Bellingen donated the “Hillier Cup” and “Davies Shield”, respectively for runners-up in 1st XI

and 2nd XI Inter-district Competition.

There is also the “Welsh Family Shield” donated in the late 1970’s by the other famous

cricketing family of the North Coast. It is played for by the Under 16’s introduced around that

time.

Other individual trophies mentioned in the minutes were from Henry Ellem for bowling and

later for the highest score, from Neville Welsh for the most catches by a Junior in inter-district

and from Gordon Rowe for the two outstanding performances in Inter-district Cricket each

season.

COUNCIL ACTIVITIES

Apart from running the Inter-district the Council has been involved in many other activities

over the years. These are but some of those activities.

The North Coast Cricket Council participated in Country Week from its beginning. Country

Week, introduced into N.S.W. cricket long before the war was a chance for cricketers to further

their expertise and experience. Lionel Fowler, Henry Ellem and Bill King (Kempsey) were

keen advocates of the carnival enjoyed by many. Last reference to the carnival in our records

was 1953. It is not sure if this was the last year the carnival was conducted.

The chance to play representative cricket at a higher level than inter-district cricket lapsed for

some years until 1958 when Inter-Council games between the three coastal councils were

introduced. These matches had their ups and downs with regard to enthusiasm and

participation but played a part in country selection. The presence of a State Selector was also

an added spur. The matches continued until the change to Under 24’s in the 1970’s.

Council first participated in the J.S White Colts Carnival at Tamworth in 1953. Since then a

combined North Coast side makes the trip annually for three day’s excellent cricket that has

been the start of many a career. Elwin Brumby, Horrie Cameron and Cec Moody are but three

of many who devoted their time to this fixture.

Our junior cricketers first obtained the advantage of the N.S.W. County Coaching School in

1951. One or two players were sent each year to Sydney for intensive coaching under the

guidance of some of the stars of cricket of the day. Meeting the stars and enjoying the S.C.G.

were among the great benefits of the trip.

Juniors to attend the camp were selected from trial games early in its conception. With the

arrival of George Lowe (1954) for his coaching schools throughout the state this changed and

George was asked to select the lads to attend the school. It is believed that George made three

or four trips of this kind and he brought a lot of enjoyment to the game.

Trials and selection from association nominations continued to be the method of selecting the

cricketers for the Sydney trip. In 1974, local Coaching Schools were held by N.S.W. providing

more young cricketers with the opportunity.

COUNCIL VISITORS

Council has played host to many teams since its inception. The following are some of the

visits.

A Sydney City side visited both Bellingen and Grafton in 1947. There is little record of the

visit except that the weather intervened at Grafton and Associations bore the costs.

North Coast Council participated with Far North Coast Council in the match against the touring

M.C.C. side at Lismore in 1950.

The N.S.W. State side with Messers Barnes, Miller, Burke etc visited Grafton in 1951/52. The

occasion turned out to be a great success with the cricketers visiting the local schools as well.

Council’s next visitors were once again the N.S.W. Shield Team at Verge Street Oval,

Kempsey in 1956. Saunders, Watson, O’Neill etc were on display for the state but the show

was stolen by an Upper Macleay player, Keith Forrest, with a great bowling performance.

The New Zealand Canterbury Colts visited Grafton in 1956. Grafton played host for the

Council to the N.S.W. State Side in 1959 and also the Fijians in 1960.

1962 saw two visits. The Cliftons from Gosford (including family member Alan Davidson)

played the Welsh Family at Macksville High School. Davidson’s visit to the area was long

remembered.

The Tasmanian Colts played the same year at Grafton. One of the great characters of the game,

on and off the field, Max Walker, made an appearance in this match as an opening batsman.

In 1967 the South Australian Shield side played at Brelsford Park. Neil Hawke and Ashley

Mallett along with Les Favell were present while a young Greg Chappell was warming the

sidelines.

1972 once again saw the Canterbury Colts back in the area, this time at Brelsford Park. The

visitors had a lot of talent at their disposal including a very promising youngster called Richard

Hadlee.

Since this time there has been the Tooheys Cup games with both the pleasures and financial

rewards being available to cricket.

TRIVIA

Up until the 1980’s all meetings were held in Coffs Harbour with the venues the School of Arts

(1946-61), Plantation Hotel (1962-72), Coffs Harbour Primary School and the Ex-Services

Club.

Annual meetings in the early days must have been long affairs with repeated references to

refreshments available. A particularly telling remark in the attendance was in 1956 when Coffs

Association had as delegates George Ginger and Norm Munro (Morning Session) and Ian

Watkins and Harry Lovett (Afternoon Session). Nothing has really changed except wetter

venues.

In 1952 the Council donated 15 pounds to Grafton to assist in the construction of the

sightboards at Fisher Park. The following year C.S. Smith reported progress on the work as

being very satisfactory, and would be ready for the coming season. Thanks for the invaluable

help of L. Fowler and B. Sexton was also recorded.

How times and the keenness of cricketers must have changed according to the minutes of 1952.

“Sprigs be disallowed on canvas matting”. Carried. Turf wicket curators would be particularly

interested in this minute.

And perhaps some of the early administrators had more foresight than our elected Councillors,

past and present. A minute recorded in 1957 says “a further approach be made to N.S.W.C.A.

for financial assistance to the proposed new oval and turf wicket at Brelsford Park pointing out

the central location in this Council and the road, rail and airport facilities available”.

HALL OF FAME

Over the years the Council has been blessed with many hard-working officials and characters,

some of whom had a charisma all of their own. In compiling this list there will be some missed.

For this I apologise as I have selected people on attendance at meetings and if everyone was

mentioned it would be a very lengthy exercise.

Norm Morton of Orara River heads the list. Norm, a very capable administrator, chaired the

first two meetings, and upon the death of J.F. Towells, became the President, a position he held

until his retirement from officialdom in 1956. Norm showed a deep dedication to his position.

Lionel Fowler was the minutes secretary at the inaugural meeting. Between then and when he

left for Sydney in 1955/56 Lionel held every position in the Council except for President. His

efforts are recorded in the minutes. His efforts on the cricket field are still legendary.

Harry Lovett (Coffs Harbour) was the first secretary/treasurer, acted as auditor and was a keen

administrator of the game. He attended meetings regularly until the mid 50’s when illness

forced his retirement from active circles.

Harry Watson from Lower River must have been the quiet achiever. He attended meetings up

until 1954 and was a keen advocate of the Council.

Henry Ellem (Coffs Harbour and Grafton) held many positions in the Council and was sole

Patron for 12 years. He showed a great interest in the game both on and off the field and was

the Council’s first selector to N.S.W. Country, a position he held for many years.

Owen Ryan (Lower River) served in many capacities in his seven years in the Council

including delegate to N.S.W. and Country Week Manager. He was a very keen administrator

and follower of the game.

Bill (W) Amos, representing Coffs Harbour Umpires, attended 11 successive meetings. His

contribution to the Executive with his knowledge of cricket was a contributing factor to the

Council’s success.

Horrie Cameron’s (Grafton) contribution to Council was great in his 12 years of active service.

After serving his apprenticeship with vice-presidencies, recording secretaries etc, Horrie gave

great services to the game as a selector and Tamworth Colts Carnival Manager for many years.

Elwin Brumby (Grafton) joined Council ranks in 1954, served 3 years as Secretary/Treasurer,

5 years as President and still fitted in time to serve as manager to Tamworth as well as help

organise a few visits. Elwin’s enthusiasm was hard to match.

In the early days two visitors from Kempsey were prominent in Council affairs. Fred Bliss as

assistant secretary and recording secretary made a very valuable contribution to affairs.

Bill (W) King, with his great interest in the game, helped Council greatly with his experience.

Bill represented Council at N.S.W. Country Committee meetings and managed the Country

Week Team on several occasions. He has an undying love and a long memory of the early

years of cricket in the Council and especially on the Macleay.

Bill (W) Wright had a long association with the Council, representing both Coffs Harbour and

Bellingen. He had a great love and interest in the game and would do anything for the sake of

cricket.

Ted (E) Haggar (Grafton) was another of the loyal band of Umpires that the Council has been

blessed with. In the days of poor communication with higher authorities, Ted knew the latest

rules and his help in passing these on was invaluable.

Clarrie (Ginger) Winslow (Nambucca) and Wally Tyson (Bellingen) appear from records to

have dead-heated in the Council attendance stakes with 15 apiece (up to 1976).

Clarrie attended two early meetings and then made another run in the late 50’s. He gave 10

years of continuous service to the Council and his efforts will long be remembered, particularly

by the many juniors that he assisted.

Wally followed in his father’s footsteps as a cricket administrator and gave sterling service for

his knowledge of the rules. His efforts went a long way towards ironing out many of the little

problems associated with the administration of the game.

Don Tom (Coffs Harbour) was another quiet achiever, attending a dozen meetings in all from

1958 to 1975. Don was always there, quietly at hand and efficient. He would always get the

job done.

Two of the great characters of recent times were Garlie Gerrard (Grafton) and Arch Kay (Coffs

Harbour). Both had a great cheerful love of the game, were great administrators and devoted

many hours to the game of cricket, especially the younger brigade. They were particularly

fond of the memories of the game and the Council can be thankful that they had two such as

these.

Cec Moody gave many years of continuous support to cricket. Cec is best remembered for his

support for juniors and was the manager of the Colts team to the Tamworth Carnival for several

years.

Reg Thompson (Bellingen) devoted his services to the Council for several years as the

Recording Secretary and had few peers in this capacity. His records were always spot on and

he introduced some ideas into Council that greatly eased its work.

Jim Colless (Grafton) has had a long association with the Council, attending his first meeting

in 1960. He would possibly be vying to beat Ginger and Wally’s record for attendance as this

only records as far as 1976. Jim has served in many capacities and his efforts are appreciated.

In the 1970’s three new and capable administrators arrived in the shape of Gordon Rowe

(Dorrigo), Ron Short (Bellingen) and Bob Moore (Coffs Harbour).

Gordon gave many years of continuous service as President (probably as many as Ginger) and

his experience in service groups made him a very capable president. Gordon was a very keen

supporter of the older brigade of cricketers and was one of those instrumental in the creation

of the All Aged Carnival between Northern N.S.W. Councils, a carnival that has been enjoyed

by many for both cricket and social aspects.

Ron showed to be a very capable administrator and a keen supporter of the game. His five

years as secretary/treasurer were very beneficial to the Council. Bob had a very keen

knowledge of the rules and did his best to see that they were enforced correctly. Both of these

gentlemen helped to guide the Council through the early seventies when there were few

innovations to attract cricketers because of the disruptions in senior administration.

Others who have done short periods of time with the Council are Cec Watt (Clarence River),

A.E. Laddie Hacking (Coffs Harbour), Don Easy (Coffs Harbour), Neville and Lester Welsh

(Nambucca River), Russ Lamberth (Coffs Harbour), Edwin Stafford (Bellingen River), Roy

Ennis (Nambucca River), Darcy Everingham (Clarence River), Don and Tom Howard

(Nambucca River), Brian Bradley (Clarence River and Coffs Harbour), Mick Ellem

(Copmanhurst), Sam Causley (Lower River), Frank Kennedy (Clarence River), Wilf Hart

(Clarence River), Harry Layton (Clarence River), Maurie Holland (Coffs Harbour), C.S. Smith

(Clarence River), Frank Sheehan (Clarence River), George Ginger (Coffs Harbour) and Clarrie

Smith (Coffs Harbour). For their contribution the young players of today who are enjoying

cricket at an inter-district level at a young age should be very grateful.

And the Council should be grateful for the foresight of J.F. Towells whose initiative led to the

first meeting and the formation of the Council.

Regional Bash.

Cricket NSW has announced a new T20 knock out

competition to be played by 16 new franchises throughout

regional NSW starting on Sunday 11 October 2015,

culminating in the Finals Gala Day at the Sydney Cricket

Ground on Sunday 6 December 2015.

Sponsored by Cricket NSW’s major sponsor, Transport for NSW, the Plan B Regional Bash competition will

field eight Sydney Sixers Conference franchises and eight Sydney Thunder Conference franchises creating a

direct pathway for identification of regional cricketers into the Cricket NSW BBL franchises.

The eight Sixers Conference teams are the Central Coast Rush, Coffs Coast Chargers, Hunter Hitmen, Illawarra

Flames, Macquarie Coast Stingers, Newcastle Blasters, Northern Inland Bolters and Northern Rivers Rock.

The eight Thunder Conference franchises are the ACT Aces, Border Bullets, Central West Wranglers,

Murrumbidgee Rangers, Orana Outlaws, South Coast Crew, Southern Riverina Vipers and Wagga Wagga

Sloggers.

Coffs Coast Chargers will hold one of 16 Cricket NSW regional franchises in the T20 knock out competition.

The team is aligned with the Sydney Sixers conference and will host a sudden death meeting with Northern

Rivers Rock at Coffs Coast Sports and Leisure Park on Sunday, October 11.

Former NSW and Australian batting hero Doug Walters will be the Sixers conference ambassador and will work

with the Coffs team as a mentor and promoter of T20 cricket in the area. Cricket NSW chief executive Andrew

Jones said the new project continues the policy of giving regional players more opportunities to play on the big

stage. "We are committed to growing cricket in the regions and ensure talented players in those areas get the

opportunities they deserve," he said. "Cricket NSW wants to ensure everyone has a direct link with the Sixers

and the Plan B Regional Bash will do all of these things."

Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Roads, Andrew Gee, said the competition was designed to promote the

important Plan B road safety message. "Drink driving has a devastating effect on regional communities," he

said. "Working on the ground with local players and supporters at these tournaments provides a great

opportunity to help communities understand the importance of planning ahead and having a Plan B to get home

safely after a night out.

"Besides promoting the importance of having a Plan B, this cricket tournament will give country players the

opportunity to play on the hallowed turf of the SCG. "It doesn't get much better than that."

The Plan B Regional Bash will commence on October 11 when the Coffs Coast Chargers take on the Northern

Rivers Rock in Coffs Harbour in the Sixers Conference, whilst the Border Bullets will host Southern Riverina

Vipers in the Thunder Conference.

SELECTORS have named the Coffs Coast Chargers squad to take

on Northern Rivers Rock in the new NSW regional T20

competition. The local Plan B Bash round will be played at Coffs

Coast Sports and Leisure Park on Sunday, October 11, and the

Chargers line-up contains a mix of hard heads and some of the

most exciting young players seen in years. Gates open at 10am for a midday start and entry is free.

Sawtell's Trent Mitchell will lead the team, assisted by Damon Rootes of Plantation Diggers. Others in the side

are Josh Bartlett, Alex Byrne, Andrew Ellis, Nathan Essex, Jack Ireland, Jake Kroehnert, Mitch Kroehnert, Brad

Lewis, John Lovett, Ben McMahon, Patrick Myles, Benjamin Sims and Ricky Welsh.

The winner will go on to play either Northern Inland Bolters or Macquarie Coast Stingers on November 8 at a

venue to be announced. Next stop after that is the finals gala day on December 6 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Teams playing in Coffs Harbour will be mentored by two of the great characters of international Test cricket.

Legendary batsman "Dashing Doug" Walters is the figurehead of the Chargers while fiery fast bowler Len

Pascoe will slow down for long enough to chaperone the Rock. Doug and Len have guaranteed a load of fun

with special emphasis on the grass roots.

A NEW chapter in the progress of Country Cricket will be written

while another will be revisited when cricket kicks off along the

North Coast this weekend.

The inaugural Plan B Regional Big Bash gets underway on Sunday

with 16 regional teams from throughout New South Wales

competing in the competition which will culminate in a Finals Gala

Day at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday, December 6.

Eight teams are aligned with Big Bash League franchise Sydney Sixers and eight with Sydney Thunder. Coffs

Coast Chargers, drawing players from Coffs Harbour, Clarence River, Nambucca Bellingen and Lower

Clarence, take on Northern Rivers Rock with players from Tweed, Ballina, Lismore and Casino in the opening

match of the Sydney Sixers Conference at Coffs Harbour Leisure Park from 10am.

Lower Clarence duo Ben McMahon and Nathan Essex have been named for Chargers along with Clarence

River's Jake Kroehnert and Mitch Kroehnert. McMahon, who captained Harwood to victory in the 2014/15

Cleavers Mechanical 30-over Night Cricket competition, has been labelled one of the side's 'Young Guns' along

with teenager Damon Rootes, who captained Coffs Harbour to victory over Clarence River in the 2014/15 North

Coast Inter-District Competition.

"It'll be good fun to play with and against people you've never played," McMahon said. "It'll be a bit more of a

bash than normal rep cricket. But it's still the basis of cricket. You've got to take your catches and bat your overs

out. You still have to play the right way to win."

15 COFFS Coast cricketers had the chance to

impress Cricket NSW selectors today in the

new Plan B Regional Bash Twenty20. The

first round was played at Coffs Coast Sports

and Leisure Park in a contest between the

Coffs Coast Chargers and Northern Rivers

Rock.

Coffs were first to bat, but stumbled early with Sawtell's Ricky Welsh caught-out for a duck. Diggers' Alex

Byrne put 13 runs on the scoreboard and Sawtell's Trent Mitchell also proved handy with 14 runs. Jake

Kroehnert of Grafton and Ben Sims of Coffs Colts were the stand-out performers - scoring 38 and 28 runs

respectively.

Northern Rivers were chasing a score of 5-102. First to the crease was Jayden Hoare and Abe Crawford who

fell quickly to the Chargers after Hoare was run out for seven and Crawford was caught by Damon Rootes for a

duck. Sam Irvine was also left scoreless after he was run-out following a delivery by Josh Bartlett.

But a stellar partnership by Caleb Ziebell and Justin Hoare put the visiting team on the front-foot scoring 40 and

56 runs respectively. The game was called at the 15th over with the Northern Rivers triumphant on 3-108.

Justin Hoare was named man of the man match - an honour presented by Australian cricket legend Doug

Walters. Walters said the season was off to a promising start. "T20 is a good format and it gives local players a

chance to prove themselves on the big stage," he said.

Northern Rivers Rock will now play either Northern Inland Bolters or Macquarie Coast Stingers on November 8

at a venue to be announced.

The Border Bullets and Northern Rivers Rock have become the first teams to win matches in

the Plan B Regional Bash, on the historic first weekend of the competition.

Fans in Albury and Coffs Harbour got the first opportunity to see the brand new T20

competition which will see matches played across NSW on every Sunday until December 6.

Northern Rivers Rock started their campaign well, taking a wicket without allowing the

Chargers to score after winning the toss and sending the Coffs Coast team into bat.

Alex Byrne (13) and Trent Mitchell (14) tried to steady the innings after the early loss, before

both went in quick succession.

When Damon Rootes was trapped LBW by Michael Anderson (2-18), Coffs Coast fell to 4-

30.

A Jake Kroehnert (38no) and Ben Sims (28no) partnership added 60 to the Chargers score, as

they finished their 20 overs 6-102.

In reply, the Northern Rivers side also lost their first wicket without score when Abe

Crawford was caught by Rootes.

The Rock’s running between the wickets was their undoing early in the innings with Jayden

Hoare (7) and Sam Irvine both run out leaving Northern Rivers in trouble at 3-17.

Those were the last wickets Northern Rivers would lose though, with Justin Moore (56*) and

Caleb Ziebell (40*) putting on a 91-run partnership to see their team home after 15 overs.

Northern Rivers will face the winner of this Sunday’s (October 18) Sixers Conference match

between the Northern Inland Bolters and the Macquarie Coast Stingers on November 8.

ALMOST a year after announcing his retirement

from representative cricket, Craig Haworth is

back in a Coffs Harbour District XI. Arguably the

competition's most distinguished rep player will

be in the team to take on Parkes DCA on Tuesday

at River- side Sporting Park in Tamworth.

Victory will put CHDCA into the grand final of

the McDonald's Country Cup against the winner

of the match between Tamworth and Berry-

Shoalhaven Heads.

In March, Haworth bowed out a winner after a last- minute call-up to the Interdistrict side and made easily the

sporting quote of the Coffs Coast sporting year. "I was just buying a box of beer to take up for the game when I

got the phone call to bring my gear," he said in typical laconic fashion.

Vice-captain Matt Rose said the squad would travel west on Monday with a full team still to be announced.

"Ricky Welsh, Tyh Murphy and Brad Lewis are unavailable but Sawtell have promised replacements," Rose

said. "Damon Rootes will captain the team and apart from Craig and myself as the old guard, there's an

extraordinary number of up-and-comers in the side," he said. "If our old bones are slow, the young, fit kids will

give us a massive advantage in the field."

Also ready to play are Jack Ireland, Josh Bartlett, Austyn Nugent and Jimi Allan (Nambucca Valley), John

Lovett and Ben Sims (Park Beach Bowls Club Colts) and Ty Adams (Plantation Diggers).

Rose admitted nothing was known of the opponents. "I'm pretty sure they don't know anything about us,

either," he quipped. "That makes us even until we toss and after that, it's a matter of playing whatever you see

in front of you. "Obviously, I'm always positive and have a good feeling this could be our chance to go all the

way after finishing third last year. "Every game so far we've tried to keep the pressure down, mainly because of

having so many young blokes out there, but they've all risen to the occasion and I reckon they will again."

THE top order's failure to set a platform came back to

haunt Coffs Harbour District when eliminated by Parkes

in the McDonald's Country Cup semi-final played in

Tamworth. Evergreen opener Matt Rose top-scored with

55 but the next three batsmen couldn't get off the ground.

While there was a slight glimmer of hope provided by the

middle order and another 20 or so runs would have made it interesting, the damage had been done early.

Captain Damon Rootes had an off day with the bat, scoring just one run and said having to re-start the engines

so often took a toll. "Losing those wickets one after another forced us to settle and start all over and we lost the

opportunity to build partnerships," he said. "The exception was Raman Phoonie, who came in just after me

when we were in a bit of trouble, but he knuckled down with Rosey and almost got through to the end. "Raman

is just 15 years old and played brilliantly. "If another of us had been able to support with a sizable partnership,

it could have been a different story."

Rose also paid tribute to the young Plantation Diggers batsman but said he sometimes had to curb his

exuberance. "A couple of times he said 'Rosey, I think I should have a go at them now' but it wasn't the time,"

the veteran said. "One day he'll be given his head and he'll tear the bowlers to pieces. "There are six kids under

the age of 18 in this team and their day will come if we keep them together. "The experience from this trip is

going to be invaluable to their careers."

Parkes District also had early hiccups but big hitting from Vince Umbers (41 not out) and Jacob Harvey (52)

carried them home.

Hard yakka pays off for Parkes – 29th Dec 2015

PARKES reaped the benefit of a lot of hard work and attention to fielding detail to win their way into a

McDonald’s Country Cup Final at Tamworth’s No 1 Oval today by beating Coffs Harbour in yesterday’s semi-

final at Riverside 2. Chasing the 9-185 set by Coffs, Parkes finished 5-187 with four overs to spare.

While skipper Anthony Heraghty acknowledged “it was a great chase”, he thought the bowling and fielding was

exceptional. “Flawless really,” Heraghty said. “Everyone bowled well and the fielding was great. “But we’ve

worked really hard the last three or four weeks on our fielding and bowling and it showed today.” Almost every

Parkes bowler claimed a wicket.

Coffs opener Matt Rose was a shining light for the coastal side, reaching 55 before he was stumped by Peter

Yelland off Heraghty’s bowling. Ben Sims (38), Raman Phoonie (28) and Jack Ireland (24) also got going but

Coffs always struggled against some tight bowling and fielding.

Yelland (20), Scott Knights (13) and Myles Smith (11) all made it into double figures but, at 4-63, Coffs had

worked their way into the game thanks to some good bowling from Julian Hulbert (2-28), Josh Bartlett (1-28)

and John Lovett (1-32). However, Vince Umbers (41no) and Jacob Harvey (52) produced a matchwinning 99-

run stand to lead their side into a Country Cup Final. Umbers smacked seven fours while Harvey went one

better, slamming seven fours and a six. Mitch Cambourn (16no) was there with Umbers at the end to celebrate.

Heraghty said the batting was a good even effort. “We started a little bit slowly but a few batsmen really stood

up. “Vince and Jacob were great. It wasn’t easy to bat on but the longer you were out there the easier it got.”

NAMBUCCA Valley embarrassed Clarence River with its

first North Coast Cricket Council Inter-District win in

recent memory on Sunday. Hosts Clarence River headed

into the match full of confidence and may have been guilty

of underestimating their opposition, especially when the

visitors fielded just 10 players. But among those were

several emerging junior stars including the likes of 18-

year-old Josh Bartlett, who captained the side, his 17-year-

old brother Brodie Bartlett and Jamie Bekis, who captained

the North Coast Combined High School side in 2014. Their combined enthusiasm shone through and ultimately the

difference - along with the quality of Justin Saker - as Clarence River set just 149, which was never enough on a

decent surface at Ellem Oval.

Josh Bartlett led from the front from the outset. Clarence River opener Matt Dougherty hit a sweetly timed pull shot

for six off his first ball faced, but was caught by Brodie Bartlett diving low to his right the very next ball. The wicket

set the tone for the match. Josh proceeded to get through the defences of both Bill North (0) and captain Jake

Kroehnert (1) to take the top of off stump and later Brodie snared a similarly sharp catch at cover to remove Mitch

Kroehnert, who was looking dangerous on 25. Another exceptional effort in the field led to the dismissal of Luke

Cox on 33, run out by a direct hit throw to the bowler's end from boundary rider Jesse Allan at fine leg. Josh Bartlett,

meanwhile, came back into the attack to mop up the tail, finishing with 6 for 29 off 8.4.

The only bright light of the Clarence River innings was that of Tom Kroehnert. The CRCA president opened the

batting and witnessed the carnage on his way to scoring 47. "Young Bartlett bowls fairly well," Tom said. "But our

top order just lost too many poles too early and, apart from a couple of partnerships in the middle, we really didn't set

the tone with partnerships either. Hence the reason 150 was it and it turned out it wasn't enough." It continued a

strong run of form for the CRCA president, who also scored 47 for his club side South Services on Saturday and

made 24 in his representative comeback in Clarence River's most recent outing against Tweed Valley in the Country

Cup.

Clarence River started well in the field with Brad Chard (2 for 44 off 85) taking two early scalps. But that was where

the joy ended as Saker (79no) took to most of the bowlers and was ably supported by Brodie Bartlett (43).

"I can't remember when we last won a game," the side's veteran and Todd Bartlett said. "They're a good little side

now. They're gotten to that age where they're pretty competitive and able to match it with the bigger fellas. "Justin

Saker's been in England playing and hooked up with us last month. He brings a bit of experience and it’s good to see

him get among the runs."

LOWER Clarence missed a golden opportunity to go top of the table in the

North Coast Cricket Council Inter-District Cricket Competition, going down

to Coffs Harbour by just one wicket at Harwood Oval on Sunday. Lower’s

top order faltered, slumping to 6 for 55, before middle order batsmen Hayden

McMahon (20) and Nathan Essex (25) took the side’s total to 116. John

Lovett (4 for 43 off 8.3) and Connor McCoy (3 for 32 off 10) did most of the

damage for the 2015/16 Country Cup semi-finalists.

Zac Honeybrook (4 for 12 off 6) made similar indentations on Coffs

Harbour’s top order, but in the end the target set was just not quite high

enough. “I couldn’t fault our bowling,” Lower Clarence captain Luke Many

said. “Zac Honeybrook opened up and got two lbws from batsmen

shouldering arms. Both times the ball jagged back and would’ve been

smashing into middle. “Everyone bowled well, but when you’re defending

116 it’s pretty tough going. “There was nothing wrong with the wicket, just both top orders didn’t bat real well.

Basically for both teams the bowlers did their job and the batsman didn’t really.”

Lower Clarence will now host Nambucca Valley in the third and final round on February 7 with the winner guaranteed

a place in the final to be decided on February 14.

will face Nambucca in a do-or-die final match on

Sunday in the North Coast Cricket Council Inter-

District competition.

It is the first time Nambucca have had a chance at

making the finals in the last decade and it makes them a tough opponent for the Lower Clarence side. "We are

always confident, you have to be confident or you might as well not turn up," LCCA captain Luke Many said. "But

Nambucca are a bit of an unknown for us. It will be interesting to see how they play."

Lower will be without attacking weapon Nathan Essex who is away on work commitments with half their side

under 20.

NORTH COAST CRICKET: For the first time in

about 15 years there will be no Clarence Valley based

representative side competing in the final of the North

Coast Cricket Council First Grade Inter-District

competition. Lower Clarence held on tightly to the

Clarence Valley's last hope of making the final until

they were defeated by Nambucca Valley at the

weekend. The win was Nambucca Valley's second win

in the competition for the past five years - the first coming earlier in this season's competition in a surprise upset

against Clarence River.

North Coast Cricket Council president Brendan Cunningham said the surprise rise of the Nambucca Valley side

brought a little more excitement into the competition. "Nambucca have been a real surprise packet this year," he said.

"They have a core group of youngsters all around the same age who have come through the ranks in the last couple

of years. "It has been a real coming of age for their side this year with a couple of good wins against the Clarence

sides. "It is a nice change, because you don't want to see the same one or two sides dominating the competition year

after year."

Nambucca Valley earned their spot in the final following a dominant performance against the Lower Clarence

representative side last Sunday. With a thought of extra juice in the wicket, Lower Clarence captain Luke Many won

the toss and sent Nambucca into bat. But the plan backfired on the Lower captain as Nambucca went on to post 186

through the efforts of Andrew Budd (68) and Austyn Nugent (36). Wayward bowling was costly for the Lower side

as they racked up 35 runs - the third highest total on the batting card - in extras, including 27 wides.

Despite another top class knock from opening batsman Nathan Ensbey (60) a lack of partnerships cost Lower as they

fell almost 30 runs short. "We thought there was a bit of juice in the wicket but it turned out not to be the case,"

Ensbey said. "They had the chance to put on some decent runs and did well to make 180-odd. "We were confident

going into bat but we just lost too many wickets at a consistent rate. The wicket was a little two-paced during our

innings and the boys probably picked the wrong balls to go after." Ensbey praised the efforts of Hayden McMahon

(32) who along with Ensbey put together a partnership of 58. "Hayden batted pretty well out there," he said. "He was

probably the pick of our bowlers."

Coffs batsmen falter in decider - 17th Feb 2016 COFFS Harbour's representative team saved its worst 'til last. Playing in the interdistrict final against Nambucca

Valley on a perfect day for batting, Coffs Harbour was skittled for only 110. That final figure is flattered by the fact

extras was the top scorer for the innings and an eighth wicket stand between Raman Phoonie and Julian Hulbert

provided 57 runs. At one stage Coffs Harbour fell to a dismal 7-45. "They bowled well in those first 10 overs, they

gave us nothing," Coffs Harbour captain Matt Rose lamented.

The Coffs Harbour team held some hopes of a miracle win after taking two early wickets with the ball but Brodie

Bartlett and Justin Saker ensured Nambucca Valley claimed the interdistrict title. Rose was full of praise for an

opponent that had shown remarkable improvement after failing to win a game in the past four years. "They

(Nambucca) were a young team that's got better with some experience," he said. "They play together on a Saturday

and it shows when they play together on Sunday. There's not many weaknesses in that team but having said that, we

should've given them a better run."

STAN AUSTIN TOUR REPORT - 2016

What can I say? Stan Austin started out wet and stayed that way! Travelling down on Sunday

we encountered a bit of rain and had our fingers crossed that it would pass. On Monday the

game commenced in drizzle that continued until the umpires eventually called it off. North

Coast had Far North Coast down by 7 wickets when they ceased play.

With the weather not looking like it would improve and the condition of the grounds, the Stan

Austin committee organised games of indoor cricket for everyone to fill in their time. The team

really enjoyed the games at the indoor centre over the next 2 days and even though the games

were non-competitive, NCCC were clear winners of every game!

We stayed until Wednesday with the hope that the grounds would become playable but

unfortunately that didn’t eventuate, and we left a very overcast Taree after a quick game of

indoor and gorged ourselves on pizzas provided by the Stan Austin Committee.

I would recommend staying at the Taree Motor Inn again mainly due to the catered breakfasts

and washing facilities. Washing at a laundromat can get very expensive (see the Gold Coast

costs) and being able to wash at the motel was brilliant. I’d also recommend hiring a bus again.

It kept the team together and transportable. This year seemed so much easier, not having to do

multiple trips to get players where they needed to be. Having Terry’s car available for the run

around jobs was a lifesaver though and much appreciated by me when I had shopping to do.

Terry did a brilliant job with the team and we had no complaints about the trip considering the

weather we had! We had a terrific time and I would recommend taking the opportunity to

accompany this tour, if you get it. There’s usually brilliant cricket and always very enthusiastic

cricketers to keep you company.

GOLD COAST TOUR REPORT - 2016

This year we stayed at the Tallebudgera Recreation Centre and found it very comfortable.

The bush setting was very nice and the weather was much cooler than we have experienced in

the past. Our rooms weren’t air conditioned but being close to the beach kept the heat down.

The facility was great and the players had plenty of room to run around and pool access in the

afternoons. The catering was good and we had few complaints about the food. The military

routine in the dining hall was an eye opener for some of the players but they handled it well

and soon became accustomed to it. The only hiccup was not having breakfast catered on

Tuesday and was completely my fault for not checking the final paperwork. It was ordered

on the original documents but had dropped

off by the time we got there. The centre very

quickly put together a cold breakfast for

everyone, much to my relief, and it was all

sorted.

The lunch catering done by the Gaskin’s at

Mudgeeraba-Nerang CC was wonderful and

it would be my recommendation that this

continues in the future. Having the lunches

provided at the grounds by the Gaskins saved

the managers and coaches from the stress of

picking up and keeping them cool.

On Tuesday we played at TSS and it was great to see everyone at the same ground. The

school definitely has brilliant facilities. We had a small hiccup with lunches, as it was my

understanding that TSS were going to cater for our teams. This wasn’t the case but thanks to

some brilliant parents, the teams were fed and very happy. I really appreciate the Tabors and

Symons for coming to our rescue!

Taking four teams instead of three had very little impact on management. The only negative

I could see was that the 15’s played at a different ground to the younger teams. The Gaskins

were very accommodating by delivering the lunches to the extra ground. The coaches and

managers did a great job of looking after their players and my absence at games wasn’t

noticed. I would really consider not sending an extra manager next year. This would save

the NCCC money and if the tour is organised before-hand, which it always is, then there is

very little for the tour manager to do, other than deal with small hiccups and washing.

The bus trip was very relaxed and I highly recommend using the same bus company again.

Tom, our driver, was brilliant! The coaches and managers did an amazing job, as always!

They are great ambassadors for the North Coast Cricket Council and very nurturing to our

players. I appreciate the assistance and respect they show to everyone and want to thank

them for the brilliant job they do! Terry’s program and relaxed manner ensure that our

players are getting the best opportunities we can offer.

Organising the tour was a great experience and it wasn’t until it was in full swing and getting

close that I realised the size of the task. I was very grateful for Leanne’s help on many

occasions! She is a master!

UNDER 15’S

Being the manager of the U15’s in January 2016 was a pleasure. The players enjoyed

themselves both on and off the field and were good role models for the younger teams on our

cricketing tour. All players at various times during the tour played a part in the team’s

successes.

A special thank you to Janet Grieve for organising a very successful tour and doing a great job

as our tour manager.

Accommodation

Tallebudgera Recreation Camp. Staying in the one location continues to be very beneficial as

the teams are more settled and it allows families to incorporate the tour into their holiday plans.

Having the use of the pool allowed the players to cool off and relax at the end of the day and

enabled the coaches and the managers to attend to tour duties such as the laundry. The U15’s

certainly appreciated the larger dinner meals organised by Janet.

For future tours, depending on the additional cost, it may be worthwhile looking for

accommodation which provides air conditioning.

Match Reports

We played three games against Cricket Gold Coast (CGC) and on our final day we played The

Southport School (TSS). The players received quality competition and benefited from Terry’s

coaching tips and guidance over the three days. The team performed very well, winning three

of the four games played.

On the first day, North Coast won the toss and

batted, scoring 8/222 from our 50 overs. A great

run a ball century (109) from Eli Fahey was well

supported by Brock Symons (37), Jesse Ferrett

(27) and Ashley Moss (17). In reply, CGC batted

eleven and scored 134 after being bowled out in

the 43rd over. The wickets were shared between

eight bowlers with Jacob Ellis, Cooper Many and

Brock Symons taking two wickets each. Jacob

also took three catches.

On the second day we again played CGC in two

T20 games. Most CGC players backed up from

the previous day together with approximately four

new players. In our first game CGC batted first

and scored 5/139 off their 20 overs with our

wicket takers being Cooper Many (2), Jackson

Grieve (1) and James Jonklass (1) and a run out by Brock Symons. In reply, we scored 8/101

off our 20 overs with contributions by Eli Fahey (31), Jacob Ellis (21) and James Dixon (12).

In our second game we batted first and scored 8/101 with contributions by Eli Fahey (22),

Ethan Cahill (20) and Cooper Many (14). In reply CGC scored 8/86. Our wicket takers were

Jacob Ellis (2), Ethan Cahill (2), Jesse Ferrett (1) and Cooper Many (1). Jacob also made two

great run outs and Kieran Cunningham as wicket keeper took a catch and performed a

stumping.

On our final day we played TSS. The boys

were very excited to be playing on the

picturesque main oval worthy of a test match.

TSS won the toss and batted first scoring

10/167 from their 35 overs. Our wicket takers

were Cooper Many (2), Jackson Grieve (2),

Jesse Ferrett (2) and Ethan Cahill (2). Dylan

Lucas also bowled very well, only conceding

5 runs from his three overs. In reply we scored

8/170 off 34 overs with our major batting

contributions coming from Eli Fahey (47 off

45 balls), Humraj Singh (32 off 21 balls),

Brock Symons (20 off 27 balls) and Jacob Ellis (16 not out off 17 balls).

In summary, it was a well organised tour, which was enjoyed by the players, coaches and

managers where the players received the opportunity to test their cricketing skills against strong

competition.

GOLD COAST TOUR REPORT – 2016

UNDER 12’S

The NCCC U12’s 2016 Gold Coast Tour was a raging success with all those involved having

a great time. Under the guidance of new coach Rod Buckle and manager Tom Mann the well

balanced squad of players performed admirably against some strong opposition. They won 2

of the 4 games and only lost the 2 games by

narrow margins. Armed with a strong top and

middle order the U12’s posted competitive totals

even when beaten.

The unearthing of talent in the U12’s is always

exciting and this year was no exception with the

debut of a very good wicket keeper batsman in

Oscar Pilon, handy leg spin from Jonah Menzies

and a new opening batsman in Jesse Buckle.

Dubbed the big 3 a lot of expectation was on the

shoulders of the senior top order batsmen and

they did not disappoint with a massive tour. Over the 4 games they contributed most of the

runs with Tom Neal 139 runs, Coby Tabor 110 and Dylan Mann 94. Add to that Oscar Pilon

85 and Jesse Buckle 48 and we begin to see our strength was in our batting.

The bowling attack was led by speedsters Blake

Mathewson and Jack Horseman who were then supported

by change bowlers, Ethan Lucas, Connor Lockyer and

Reilly Mulhearn. The leading wicket taker for the tour

was Lachlan Carlyle with 4 wickets and best figures of 2

for 6.

With 3 of our squad members still available for U12’s

selection next year (Jesse Buckle, Lachlan Carlyle and

Reilly Mulhearn) the future looks bright in this age group.

All players were very well behaved and a pleasure to

coach. A big thank you to Tour Manager Janet Grieve who’s planning, hard work and

dedication made the tour a smoothly run success.
