President’s Report 2014-15

In this, my final report before stepping down from the position of President, I wish to thank everyone with whom I have worked at the North Coast Cricket Council over the

past 15 or so years. We have achieved a great deal, thanks to the dedication and team spirit of everyone involved over that time.

The NCCC has not only provided many years of high level representative cricket for seniors and juniors, but has also developed what I consider to be the best junior

development program of any cricket council in NSW and my best wishes go to all those who will carry the new programs into the years ahead.

Sadly, this last season has seen the tragic loss of one of our treasured coaches in Peter Symons and also, one of our outstanding former junior players in Phillip Hughes. This

report will conclude with my tribute to these members of our NCCC family. Meanwhile, with regard to the past year in cricket, I am pleased to again report that

2014/15 was another successful season, with opportunities being provided for all our cricketers to experience higher levels of competition, thanks to the efforts of all those

involved at the North Coast Cricket Council. To begin with, the Council was well represented in all of the Zone and other

representative teams as follows:-

NCCC again provided further development opportunities with another Queensland Gold Coast tour for boys U12’s, U14’s and U15’s and we again performed well at the

U16’s Stan Austin Carnival at Taree.

With respect to our own NCCC representative cricket, the North Coast Inter-district Premiers were:-

Congratulations to all those who participated and those who were successful.

The Academy Program (or former Emerging Blues Program) for 2014 was again very successful under the very professional management of our Regional Director of

Coaching, Mick Morris. The logistics of the program were well organised in every detail, thanks to the experience and management of Ron Auld. The feedback from

parents and players alike was again very positive The overall NCCC junior development program, which includes the I/D competition,

tours, carnivals and the Cricket Academy NSW program, is yielding excellent results.

The John McMahon Scholarships for the North Coast Cricket Council's Junior & Young Cricketer of the Year were again able to be considered. Jamie Bekis was awarded the U16 scholarship whilst the U19 scholarship was awarded to Alec

Baldwin. My sincere congratulations go to these fine players for these prestigious scholarships.

The NCCC cannot function without many willing helpers and the following people must be acknowledged for their efforts for the Council:-

Regional Director of Coaching, Mick Morris, and his assistant coaches, the late Peter

Symons, Jason Thompson, Terry Baldwin, Dave Johnson, Paul Symons, Brett Pardoe, Tom Mann and Brendan Palmer. Many thanks for all their efforts with our young players throughout the year.

Unfortunately, Mick has recently submitted his resignation from the position of

Regional Director of Coaching. Mick has revitalised our coaching program and our success in recent years is largely due to the leadership and expertise that he has brought to the NCCC. We wish Mick all the very best for the future and I sincerely

hope he is not completely lost to the game of cricket.

Ron Auld is the Program Manager and our sincere thanks must go to Ron for all his organisation and management of the various tours, carnivals and junior programs. There are many details which must be attended to and the success of our programs

depends on all these matters being capably looked after by Ron. Ron has also decided to hand the baton to the next generation of willing volunteers this year.

His organisation and development of our program over many years has been outstanding and the guidelines he has developed will live on for the benefit of our

future touring and development programs.

Our many thanks again go to Ken Robinson, for his efforts in regard to the NCCC Umpires Association. Ken also does a considerable amount of work as the Zone Umpires representative. He has been a tireless worker for the game of cricket and the

NCCC has been fortunate to have his knowledge and experience over the many years.

I again wish to pay special tribute to our Secretary, Leanne Statham and our Treasurer, Jo Symons.

They have kept us up to date with all the relevant issues we need to know, and organised, advised, suggested and managed every aspect of the NCCC. It is indeed a

pleasure to have people so committed to volunteering for the good of our game and all who are involved in it.

Unfortunately, I understand that Jo may be stepping down from her position as Treasurer this year. Jo has not only done a fantastic job as Treasurer but she has also

helped in many other ways above and beyond the call of duty, even under the most difficult of circumstances with the illness of her husband Peter. We all extend our very sincere thanks and best wishes to Jo and her family.

Likewise, I understand that Secretary Leanne may be contemplating stepping down.

Leanne has been an outstanding Secretary and she has managed the affairs of the NCCC in a very professional manner throughout her term in this position. I sincerely hope that Leanne can find a way to continue when it comes to the Annual General

Meeting but, if indeed Leanne does decide to not seek re-election, we wish her and her family all the very best for the next chapter in their lives. Our sincere thanks go to

Leanne as she will leave some very big shoes to fill. North Coast cricket would not exist without these people and the many volunteers

who coach, umpire and do all the necessary administrative work in their respective Associations of our Council. We simply cannot function without parents, scorers,

catering, and the necessary components that go together in conducting cricket and the NCCC.

Concluding Tributes

As mentioned in my introduction, the 2014/15 year has been marked with severe

tragedy. Firstly, we have lost one of our very dedicated and likeable Coaches with the passing

of Peter Symons during the year. Unbeknown to many of us, Peter had been managing a serious medical condition having been diagnosed with cancer early in

2013 and passing away on 16th February 2015. Peter was very generous with his time and coaching efforts for the NCCC Coaching program and there will be many of our young cricketers who have not only benefitted from his advice during his time in

coaching but will also remember him for his words of wisdom and encouragement. Pete was an extremely likeable knock about fellow, well respected by all, a terrific

role model to all, young and old. Pete had the ability to 'click' with any personality or parent, even where others may have struggled.

Peter will be sorely missed by all of us in the years ahead. Our thoughts, prayers and

deepest sympathy go to Jo and her family as they now face the future without their much loved husband and father.

The past season also brought further tragedy in November 2014 with the death of our own former junior player, Phillip Hughes, at the Sydney Cricket Ground during a

Sheffield Shield match. From the age of 11 and all through his teenage years, I had the privilege of witnessing

his talents and his character first hand. In the final match of the 2004 Bradman Cup, Phillip scored his 24th Century. Those 24 centuries were achieved at representative

levels beginning at age 11 in the final of the PSSA primary schools national competition right through to the Australian under 15’s team.

As we now know he went on to score many more centuries at all levels including the Australian under 17’s and under 19’s, then Test Cricket and One Day Internationals.

He had blasted 26 first class centuries before his final innings was cut short on 63 not out at the SCG. No one else has such a record.

Whilst Phillip never bragged about his achievements, he certainly could have been excused for doing so when you look at his stellar performances. The youngest player

to score a century in both innings of a Test Match, the youngest player to score a century on debut in an ODI, the youngest player to score a century in a Sheffield Shield final and many more achievements, too numerous to list here.

The world was stunned by the death of Phillip and people around the whole world

paid tribute by cancelling matches, observing silence, rescheduling Test Matches and putting bats out in his honour.

The North Coast Cricket Council likewise paid its own tributes during the season and sent our combined sympathy and respects to the Hughes family at Phillip’s funeral in

Macksville. The North Coast Cricket Council will never forget Phillip Hughes and Peter Symons.

In closing, I wish to again thank everyone who has been part of the NCCC during my time over the past 15 years. It has been a wonderful journey working with you all and I extend my very best wishes to the incoming committee as you move forward and

drive this important institution into the future.

FINAL REGIONAL COACH REPORT 2015

As this will be my final report as the NCCC Regional Coach I would like to express some

thoughts and thanks with you.

Firstly, as you would already know I have resigned as the NCCC Regional Coach for a

number of reasons. These include:

· I will be on a holiday throughout May this year and this will be followed with a

complete knee replacement.

· My professional workload has increased and the demands made on my time leave me

with less time for CNSW coaching programs.

· The role of the Regional Coach has changed from a Council focus to a Zone focus.

The demands and expectations of CNSW for Regional Coaches is to focus on Zone

Academy programs and basically appoint an Assistant Regional Coach to run Council

programs. I find this unacceptable.

· The workload of a Regional Coach has increased but payments from CNSW have

decreased. There are no allowances for expenses incurred in the course of running

programs for CNSW. It is expected that we commit to 4 NCZA camps, attend three

selection weekends, attend numerous matches played throughout the Zone, attend

CNSW age championships, attend meetings, plan and conduct our own Council

Coaching Programs. I don’t know about you but the last time I needed a tradesman

he was very expensive. I offer 35 years of cricket coaching knowledge and

experience and I am a Level 3 accredited coach which allows me to coach at national

level. Still CNSW don’t believe that I am worthy of expenses to do their work. This

must change before we lose far too many of our coaches.

· I don’t believe the program currently being run at NCZ is providing our elite players

with sufficient exposure to modern coaching practices. The rotation to stations

reminds me of a Primary School Tabloid. This does not inspire me to give up my

time to attend these sessions.

On a brighter note I would like to say that the past 4 years as NCCC Regional Coach have

been most enjoyable. I would like to thank the original executive of the NCCC. Ian Dinham

(President), Jason Thompson (Secretary), and Ron Auld (Treasurer). Also the current

executive Jo Symons, Leanne Statham and Tom Mann. The executive have been completely

supportive and I had a very warm working relationship with them so thank you to you all.

To the coaches who have become part of the NCCC Emerging Blues/Academy program I

would like to say how much I appreciated everything that you were able to offer and

contribute to our program. When I came on board we had three coaches including myself.

Last program we had nine Level 2 accredited coaches and myself at Level 3. Thank you

Jason Thompson, Dave Johnson, Pete Symons, Brett Pardoe, Paul Symons, Brendan Palmer,

Terry Baldwin and Tom Mann. The program organiser Ron Auld was extremely efficient

and supportive throughout the 4 years of the program.

I was encouraged to take on the role of Regional Director/Coach to make necessary changes

to the previous Emerging Blues Program. We did this by dividing the players into three age

divisions of under 12’s, 14’s and 17’s. We also ran an under 19’s program in 2012 and 2013

at the request of CNSW.

The under 12’s program was designed to lay a strong platform of the basic skills of cricket.

These included batting, bowling, catching, throwing, ground fielding and wicket keeping

while having lots of fun. They also played matches against Gold Coast and The Southport

School.

The under 14’s program was designed to reinforce the skills developed in under 12’s and

extend the skill level. They were also exposed to goal setting, sprint training and game sense.

A two day camp at Scott’s Head was a culmination of their program. They also played

matches against the Gold Coast and The Southport School.

The under 15’s -17’s program was designed to continue the skill development and expose all

players to a holistic approach to coaching. Every player had the opportunity to develop their

batting, bowling, wicket keeping, throwing, catching and ground fielding. The players took

part in goal setting, rules of cricket, one minute thank you speeches, sprint training, fitness

training, weights programs, sports injury prevention, mental approach to cricket, different

learning styles, nutrition, batting to spin, captaincy, advanced fielding techniques, game

sense, core muscle strength, yoga, commando course and trivia nights. Teams were selected

to play matches against the Gold Coast, The Southport School and an Invitation match

against NCZ teams.

The players were scanned for mixed bowling actions and shown how to rectify their actions

to bowl safely. The ipad was used to give instant feedback to batters and bowlers. This also

allowed the coaches to analyse techniques. The bowling machine was used extensively to

correct and develop batting techniques to a variety of strokes used in cricket. Baseball mitts

were introduced to develop the best practice “Baseball Throw”.

Individual Coaching Programs were developed in conjunction with each player. This made

coaching sessions more meaningful and ensured each player was working on their own

specific needs.

The NCCC Emerging Blues/Academy uniform was worn with pride and the groups stood out

in their colours.

The NCCC EB/Academy Program was taken to each Association where ever possible.

Venues were utilised for weekend camps in towns including Palmers Island Big 4, Grafton

Hockey Pavilion, Coffs Harbour – Bonville Christian College, Scott’s Head Christian Camp.

The day camps were held at Harwood, Yamba, Grafton, South Grafton, Coffs Harbour and

Bellingen.

The other big change was to introduce a tour to the Gold Coast in January instead of the

southern tour. This change has proven to be a great success with matches played against

Gold Coast and The Southport School in under 12’s, 14’s and 15’s. Next year there is the

potential take an under 13’s team as well as the above mentioned teams. Another positive

from this relationship has been the matches played at Harwood during the winter program

against the GC and TSS. This has allowed our players to develop more skill against very

strong competition which is lacking at the local level.

The success of our programs can be measured in many ways such as selection in teams at

NCCC and NCZ level. Our representation levels have been outstanding. Success can also be

measured in the amount of positive feedback we receive from the players. I believe this is at

a very high level in all age groups.

There have been a large number of parents who have volunteered their time and resources to

ensure the boys were always well fed and cared for at camps and tours. Janet Grieves

deserves a special mention as the Gold Coast Tour manager.

A Level 1 Coaching Course was held in Macksville in March 2014. Ten coaches attended

the course from CRCA, CHDCA and NBCA. Unfortunately the one coach from LCCA was

unable to attend. The ten coaches are now equipped with many drills and skills in their

kitbag.

Finally I would like to pass on my best wishes to the new Regional Coach. The role is

enormous but if you have the passion and desire to continue to make the NCCC successful I

am sure you will succeed. The support of the NCCC executive and the dedicated coaches

will always be there for you.

Firstly I would like to thank Mick Morris and Ron Auld for the work they have put into the

Academy and NCCC as a whole. They have left the Academy in a very good position both in

terms of organisation, player participation and skill levels.

2015 Academy

We had 115 nominations and accepted 82 participants from under 12s to under 17s. This

includes 10 North Coast Zone squad members.

There were games against the Gold Coast Academy in 5 age groups, [12s, 13s 14s 15s and

16s/ 17s], played at Harwood, Maclean, Ilarwill and Brushgrove on the 21st of June.

We will also play The Southport School in 13s, 14s, 15s and 16s/17s at Grafton on 20th

September. The under 12s will play “in house” games on 13th and 20th September.

13s, 14s, 15s, 16s, and 17s will have four Academy training days including one overnight

camp in May, July and August.

There will also be an “Elite training day” at Sawtell on 13th September for 14s and 16s to

prepare for Kookaburra and Bradman Cup trials.

We have made several changes to the program this year including;

A: Bringing everyone together on the same day.

The reasons for this are:

[1] To reduce travel for parents with kids in more than one age group.

[2] So the younger players can see how the older boys train and improve, and use the older

boys as role models.

[3] To allow the coaches to work together and improve their skills

[4] Reduce the ground hire costs.

[5] Allow each Association to run canteens for lunch to raise some money for themselves.

B: Using 11 local coaches from all over the council, Rod Buckle, Tom Mann, Andrew

Cahill, Matt Bailey, Chris Neal, Brodie Bartlett, Alec Baldwin, Brett Pardoe, Brendan

Palmer, Tim Bekis, Paul Symons and myself.

C: Specialist Coaches

Bill Newell (Spin Bowling). Bill played 10 seasons of Sydney 1st grade before moving to

Wauchope and captaining NCZ to Country Champions and playing for NSW Country.

Peter Ford (Fast Bowling). Peter played for NCZ before moving to Sydney and playing for

Hawkesbury CC.

Brendan Lyon (Batting). Nathan’s brother. Played Sydney 1st grade for Northern Districts.

Now a professional cricket coach running Lyon Cricket Coaching.

Mark McInnis (Leg Spin). NSW Country rep, head coach of Northern Districts CC.

D: More game sense and game based training with teams in each age group that will stay

together all the way through their time at the Academy.

E: Benchmark testing. 2km time trial, run of 3s, beep test, throwing distance and accuracy.

There will be a core strength session for 13s to 17s at the Grafton gym on 12th July.

With the help of Ashley Bryant and Brett Russell we now have a participant following the

Indigenous Cricket Pathway opening up more opportunities for him to play cricket.

We have received a lot of positive feedback from parents about the new initiatives like

specialist coaches, teams in each age and even the coffee van we had at the first academy

day.

Fees were $180 for 12s and $290 for 13s to 17s which was a significant reduction from

previous years and we need to keep looking for ways to keep them as low as possible.

Thanks to Tim and Joanne McMahon for organising the ground and lunches for the Gold

Coast games. Janet Grieves for organising grounds and lunches for Grafton Academy day.

NCZ Report

There have been some changes to program with a reduction in Zone Academy numbers and

leaving out under 19s but including under 14s. Academy days have increased to 6 including

1 overnight camp.

Inter Council games on September 25th to 27th will now be used as selection trial for

Kookaburra and Bradman Cup with a squad of 15 selected. Each council will then be able to

send 1 additional player to a final trial in November.

Kookaburra Cup is 4th to 7th January in Griffith

Bradman Cup is 11th to 14th January in Newcastle

Under 17s Country carnival has been removed this year because the National Carnival has

been moved to September which doesn’t leave time for the Country Carnival.

Under 19s trial will be on 23rd August at Macksville. Country Carnival is on 18th to 20th

September in Dubbo.

Introduction of under 18s inter council games in February to select under 19s team for Colts

Carnival in following September. This could allow us to have a 17s/18s group in our NCCC

Academy to prepare for inter council games.

North Coast Cricket Umpires & Scorers Association

President’s Report 2014-15

The past season has been relatively incident free although the standard of umpiring within the Cricket Council has not achieved regular acceptable standards, with a few

exceptions. The main reason I believe is umpires are not preparing themselves in an appropriate

manner for the match that they will be officiating on any given occasion. Match rules or By Laws vary from competition to competition and it is apparent that the relevant

match conditions are not being reviewed prior to the commencement of matches. I observed several matches towards the end of the season and I was surprised that on

many occasions the umpires did not work as a team prior to the commencement of the game. The pre-game check of the field, boundaries and pitch are just as important as

the on field teamwork which occurs during the game. Umpires must work together, not as individuals, when having discussions with captains and players on the field. They should enter the field of play together and give the impression to all that they

want to enjoy their day.

Standards of dress are sometimes disappointing. Black long pants should be ironed and the shirt should be tucked in at all times, not worn outside the pants as I have seen occasionally. Collars should be down, not opened out to protect the back of the neck.

Wide brimmed hats should be white as well as the shoes and socks, not team coloured football socks.

Fitness is also a major issue from my observations. Lack of movement at both the strikers end and non-strikers end is a problem especially to our older members. We

need to be watching where the ball is and move appropriately. Anticipation of batsmen running quick singles or multiple runs should involve both umpires if they

are watching the match in progress. This may involve the umpire at the strikers end moving towards the wicket while the ball is in motion in order to obtain a better view of a possible run out or to effect a change of sides if there is a left and right hand

combination at the wicket.

Umpires at the non-strikers end should not be stationary once the striker has played at the ball. Movement to one side or the other of the wicket will allow the umpire to keep an eye on the ball at all times and will also allow you to relax your body until

you switch on again for the next delivery.

In order to address some, if not all of these issues a NSWCUSA Umpire Development Course will be held on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 July 2015 at Coffs Harbour Comets Leagues Club commencing at 9.00am both days. The course will be

facilitated by Darren Goodger and is open to existing NSWCUSA members as well as anyone aspiring to be an umpire in the future.

On a brighter note I must congratulate Bruce Baxter for his appointment to the NSW Country Supplementary Panel for the 2014/15 season. Rob Pye and Jeff Hackett were

also appointed to several NSW Country Cricket Carnivals throughout the season and have represented our Association successfully. Chris Welsh has also been appointed

to several Country Plate and Country Cup fixtures when matches were available.

With a revised Country programme for the 2015-16 season there may be fewer opportunities to appoint umpires to Country fixtures however this should not deter our members from updating their qualifications and wanting to be the best that they can

be at all times.

It is with great sadness that NCCC notes the untimely passing of Phillip Hughes.

Playing his junior cricket with Macksville RSL, Phillip quickly progressed to the Nambucca-

Bellingen junior inter-district sides, and over a seven year period competing in the U12’s, U14’s and U16’s NCCC competition he amassed a phenomenal record of in excess of 1,700 runs at an average of 101.82. Included in that tally of runs were six centuries, with a best

effort of 149 undefeated against Clarence River in December 2003.

Coinciding with Phillip’s time in the Nambucca-Bellingen Junior Cricket Association inter-district sides, during the period 1998-99 to 2004-05, the Association experienced unprecedented success in the NCCC junior competitions. Those seven seasons delivered four

U12’s premierships, four U14’s premierships and four consecutive U16’s premierships between 2000-01 and 2003-04.

Phillip played a major role in that success, generally reserving his best efforts for the big end of season finals where he would consistently anchor the innings, leading NBJCA to

competitive totals in the deciders. Also contributing to the successful era was the fact that the age group above Phillip’s included several other promising young cricketers, and Phillip

quite often played up an age division in a side that included the likes of Jordan Moran, Josh Lawrence, Sean Cash, Ricky Welsh, Matthew Ward, Lloyd Moore, Mitchell Harvey, Kyle Masters, Adam Fitzhenry and Phillip’s brother Jason.

Phillip made his U12 debut for NBJCA in round one of the

1998-99 inter-district competition, playing his first match against Coffs Harbour at Toormina Oval on the 25th October, 1998. He was still one month short of his tenth birthday. Opening the

batting with Jordan Moran, Phillip contributed 40 runs. He featured in a large partnership with Josh Lawrence who ended

the innings on 101*, and in reply to NBJCA’s total of 4/195, Coffs Harbour were dismissed inside twenty overs for 50 runs.

As was the custom at the time, the junior inter-district competition only comprised three rounds prior to the final. For

the second and third rounds the four Associations converged on Grafton over the weekend of the 14th & 15th November, 1998 for Saturday and Sunday games.

In round two on the Saturday, NBJCA came up against Lower Clarence at Rushforth Park in

South Grafton. Included in Nambucca-Bellingen’s winning total of 213 was Phillip’s first ever half century in any level of cricket. Opening the batting again, he top scored with 64 runs, and this number would gain special significance when he made his One-Day

International debut for Australia at the MCG in January 2013. Phillip chose 64 as the number to appear on the back of his ODI playing shirt.

The following day NBJCA went down narrowly against Clarence River at Lower Fisher Park, but the side still finished on top of the ladder and qualified for the U12’s final a fortnight later

against Coffs Harbour at Connell Park in Bellingen on 29th November, 1998. Batting first, NBJCA’s total of 208 included 65 from Josh Lawrence, 42 from Jordan Moran and 20 runs

from Phillip Hughes. In reply, Coffs Harbour were dismissed for 42 runs, the comprehensive

win handing NBJCA the U12’s premiership for season 1998-99. Phillip’s promising start to his inter-district career was soon recognised by the NCCC junior

selectors with selection in the NCCC U12 Queensland tour during January 1999. The tour was originally to include games on the Gold Coast, however there was a late change when the local authorities were unable to organise games despite having originally agreed to do so. It

was decided in the interest of the players to proceed with a shortened tour with games against Beaudesert and Ipswich only. The original cost for the tour was $120 per player, with $40

being refunded to each player when the tour was shortened. The U12’s, U14’s and U16’s travelled to Beaudesert on Monday 11th January 1999, and

played their first match against Beaudesert on Tuesday 12th January, 1999. In the U12’s match NCCC scored 8/162 with Phillip scoring 18 runs in his debut match for the Council.

In reply Beaudesert were dismissed for 40. In their second match against Ipswich on the Wednesday, the U12’s ran up a total of 9/267

and dismissed Ipswich for 62. Phillip was undefeated on 47* as they finished their tour undefeated. The touring party returned home on Thursday via the Gold Coast where they had

a short stop at Coolangatta. Another Inter-Council match was played against Northern Tablelands at Inverell on 7th

February, 1999. Phillip only contributed 1 run in a total of 4/246. Jordan Moran finished with a century and NCCC finished with an easy victory.

The 1999-2000 junior inter-district season saw NBJCA victorious in both the U12’s and

U14’s age divisions. Jason Hughes was a member of the successful U14 team in their

final victory over Lower Clarence, whilst Phillip steered the U12’s to a big win over Clarence River.

Phillip’s hunger for runs was now evident in his performances in the U12 representative games for NBJCA. He only played three games during that 1999-2000 campaign, running up

scores of 95* against Lower Clarence, 77 against Clarence River, and then breaking through for a century in the final. His score of 103 launched NBJCA to a total of 208, and Clarence River responded with 101.

In Inter-Council fixtures during the 1999-2000 season Phillip scored 59 and took 3-12 with the ball in a victory against FNCCC at Ballina on 5th December, 1999.

In January 2000, Phillip again participated in the NCCC U12 Queensland tour. The tour

departed on the 10th January, with the U12’s, U14’s and U16’s travelling by coach. Unfortunately the “Joyces” coach blew a head gasket 80 kilometres north of Grafton and a

replacement coach was required to transport the squad to Beaudesert seeing them arrive late

for a limited overs match.

Five matches were played during the course of the week in Beaudesert, Ipswich, Dalby and Warwick. The U12’s remained undefeated over the tour playing against teams that were in essence local town teams. Across the five matches, Phillip was dismissed only once,

registering scores of 9 retired, 20, 35 retired, 37 retired and 14 retired.

The cost for the tour was $150 per player. Accommodation was with billets for two nights at Beaudesert and Ipswich, and motels in Dalby and Warwick. Upon return, the financial report showed that the tour broke even.

The 2000-01 season was the last in the U12’s age division for Phillip. NBJCA took out the

trifecta winning all three finals of the junior inter-district competition, with Phillip playing in both the U12’s and U14’s finals.

Phillip was only dismissed once in four U12’s inter-district matches that season, with his scores being 49* against Lower Clarence, 12 against Clarence River, 101* against Coffs

Harbour and then 53* in the final against Clarence River on the 26th November, 2000. NBJCA chased down CRJCA total of 7/101 for the loss of just three wickets, with Phillip guiding the side home to victory.

The U14’s final was played three weeks later at Connell Park on the 17th December, 2000 and

Phillip was called up to make his debut in that age division. He contributed 29 in NBJCA total of 6/205, with Coffs Harbour being dismissed for 125 in reply.

Between the two inter-district finals, Phillip played two Inter-Council fixtures for NCCC in the U12’s age division. Against FNCCC at Grafton on the 3rd December, 2000 he scored 39

retired, and then a week later at Macksville he scored 55 against MNCCC. Both matches resulted in victories for North Coast.

Those two U12’s fixtures may well have been the last played by Phillip Hughes in the NCCC colours at junior level, as no record could be found in the archives of his participation in

Inter-Council matches in either the U14’s or U16’s age divisions. During the period 2001 to 2005 he was generally unavailable for selection in NCCC sides due to being on higher

representative duty for NCZ or above.

For the 2001-02 season Phillip was only

available for three out of the six matches played by NBJCA in the U14’s inter-district competition, and by his own standards he had

a quiet season with scores of 1, 60 and 1. Perhaps as a result the side failed to qualify for

the final of the U14 competition.

However the U16’s were successful in qualifying for their final where they came up against

Coffs Harbour on the 24th February, 2002. Phillip was drafted in to make his U16’s debut and he responded with a score of 104 in the team’s total of 6/297. Coffs were bowled out for

135, and Phillip had his fifth successive inter-district premiership cap. It was back to the U14’s for Phillip in the 2002-03 season and in five matches leading into the

final his prolific form returned with scores of 54, 50*, 28, 88* and 66. In the final their opponents were Clarence River, and Phillip’s undefeated 122 led NBJCA to an imposing

total of 3/226. Clarence River were only able to manage 7/133 from their 50 overs in reply. Including his score in the final, Phillip ended the U14’s inter-district season with 408 runs at an average of 136.

In 20003-04 Phillip was now a permanent member of the NBJCA U16’s inter-district team,

and in limited appearances he continued his liking for the Clarence River attack scoring 61* and 149* against them in the home and away fixtures, as well as 77 against Coffs Harbour in the final round. Yet again Phillip lined up with NBJCA in the final of the U16’s competition,

and his top score of 91 launched the side to a total of 7/225 against a Lower Clarence team that fought valiantly to reach 190 in reply.

His season in the U16’s inter-district competition had yielded 378 runs from four matches at an average of

189. Both his aggregate and average were records in the history of the competition stretching back to 1977-

78. The season, which proved to be his final for NBJCA in the junior inter-district competition, also delivered his seventh successive premiership from as

A mid-season switch of clubs from Macksville RSL to Sawtell meant that Phillip was now

eligible for the Coffs Harbour U16’s team in the 2004-05 season. Prior to making his debut for his new club and Association he toured India with the Australian U15’s team during

September and October of 2004 for a Tri-Nations series that also included Malaysia. Phillip’s output of runs was lower than usual however he picked up the bowler of the

series award for his performance of 6/24 against Malaysia.

In a letter of thanks dated 29th November, 2004 from Phillip to the NCCC committee for their contribution

towards the cost of the tour, Phillip commented that “the food was not so good, the weather was extremely hot and it was good to be home to a baked meal.”

In his first match for Coffs Harbour U16’s against his

former team-mates at Coronation Park in Nambucca Heads, Phillip flayed the NBJCA bowlers during his score of 129*. The Coffs Harbour Advocate reported

that “Australian Under-15 all-rounder Phillip Hughes gave his former team mates a cricket

lesson, leading Coffs Harbour to a three wicket victory over Nambucca”. The Coffs Harbour coach reported that “he had a bit of luck, he was dropped before he had scored and was

bowled off a no-ball”. Coffs Harbour U16’s qualified for the final of the inter-district competition against Clarence

River at Richardson Park, Sawtell on 20th February, 2005 and Phillip came back into the side for the final. Clarence River posted 146 and then bowled well to dismiss Coffs Harbour for

130. This was Phillip’s first taste of defeat in a NCCC junior inter-district final, and his wicket was viewed as the prize wicket for the Clarence River team. The Daily Examiner reported that “Arron Amos, bowling with great pace, ripped a short pitched delivery into

Hughes, who attempted a hook shot only to see the ball skid to backward square leg where Nick Whitton accepted the catch to the joy of his team mates. Hughes contributed just one

run.” For the 2005-06 season, his last on the North Coast prior to his move to Sydney, Phillip

resumed his affiliation with the Nambucca-Bellingen Association. He was a member of the North Coastal Zone team that contested the U17 carnival held in Newcastle during October

2005. The team manager reported that the side “was successful in its first match against Newcastle

with the highlight of the match being an unbeaten century by opening batsman Phillip Hughes. The second match was also a strong win to North Coast against Central Coast. An

outstanding opening partnership of more than 150 runs between Phillip Hughes and Lloyd Moore set the platform for victory with Phillip Hughes again scoring another century.”

Unfortunately the third day was a wash-out, but after comparing point scores, North

Coast were declared the winners of the carnival. Four players from the North Coast team were selected to play for the

Northern NSW Country U17’s with Phillip selected as captain. The other three players

were Lloyd Moore, Joe Mennie and Mitchell Harvey. The 2005-06 season also saw Phillip selected in the NSW Country

U17 side, and then the NSW U17 side. The Macksville High School open cricket team in 2004.

During 2006, Phillip transferred from Macksville High School to Sydney to attend Homebush

Boys High School, and to commence playing for Western Suburbs District Cricket Club, thus ending his direct association with North Coast cricket.

TALENT: Having Justin Gilbert in the line-up adds a new

dimension to Coffs Harbour District’s rep fortunes.

A COFFS Harbour representative cricket team will include

Dorrigo's star all-rounder Justin Gilbert for the first time in almost

a decade, when tomorrow's visit is made to Port Macquarie. Coffs

Harbour District play Hastings River at Wayne Richards Park in a

round of the SCG Country Cup from 10am, and the new-look side

is tipped as the best in years. "It was decided to really make an

effort to put the best possible team on the bus and be really

professional in our approach," manager Matt Rose said.

"Every player selected is in form and we're very honoured that Justin Gilbert made himself available after so

long away from rep cricket. "Justin does a great job on the executive, with Dorrigo club and his growing

business. "He's still a player who can turn a game single-handed and somebody you'd like on your side in a

crisis. "Dorrigo has no club game this weekend and Justin's been off the field for a couple of weeks, so I think

he's going to enjoy getting stuck in." Skipper Craig Haworth was a century -maker at club level last weekend

and Ricky Welsh and Jack Ireland made half centuries in the inter-district meeting with Nambucca Valley on

November 2.

COFFS Harbour District fell over the line against Hastings River

to progress to the next round of the SCG Country Cup. The

Coffs visitors remained three runs clear on 217 when the last

Hastings wicket fell and will now play old rivals from Tweed

River - probably at Coffs Coast Sports and Leisure Park - on

December 14.

At the last moment, skipper Craig Haworth and high profile recruits Dave Angus and Justin Gilbert were forced

to withdraw but rather than drop the bundle, manager Matt Rose said the three rep lacements starred for the side.

"Apart from myself stepping up and getting run out for one," he quipped. "Russell Gardner got a late call-up

and belted 72 runs Raja Sandhu was involved in taking the last wicket when Hastings needed a boundary off the

last delivery to win. "John Lovett took the catch to go with five wickets he picked up in the game and one day

after he took six at club level. "Okay, we won but we should never have put ourselves in that position."

Coffs batted first and were cruising until the innings went pear-shaped at 3-160. "At one stage the run rate

could have seen us finish up around 290 but we lost our way and limped to 217," Rose admitted. "I was worried

when Hastings got to 0-56 before losing their first wicket. "Then, they went as bad as we did and couldn't kick

on with any strong bat play. "The last two wickets fell in the last over and we were off the hook." Rose also

lamented another statistic which almost wrecked the day. "We bowled 44 wides in the innings. Sundries almost

killed us which to be honest is pretty awful and it's something we have to fix before meeting Tweed.

"Otherwise, it's going to be another year we fall down at that stage of the series."

heartache with a 34-run loss to Coffs Harbour in

Sunday's quarter-final at King George Oval. The

Lakers have made seven Finals Carnivals in a

decade but been unable to win through to the decider at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Despite having a high

seeding of three and unbeaten in all competitions this season, the Lakers were outplayed by a resolut e Coffs

Harbour, who face defending champions Hamilton Wickham on Monday at North Dalton Park to decide who

plays at the SCG.

Batting first the sixth-seeded Coffs posted a competitive 201, led by half-centuries from Jack Ireland (63) and

Alec Baldwin (55). The visitors were 2-133 before the Lakers fought back hard with Mark Ulcigrai taking 4-20

off 8.2 overs, while Tode Biracoski responded to his call-up by taking 3-18 off six overs.

In reply the Lakers were 1-54 but lost 5-10 and were bowled out for 167. Skipper Brendan White (36) top

scored, with Biracoski, batting at No 8, making 23. Man-of-the-match Baldwin took 3-14 and Pat Myles 3-21

for Coffs. "It's very disappointing," White said. "We didn't do anything well enough and at this level if you

don't play well you get punished."

The other three SCG Country Cup quarter-finals were one-sided affairs. Dubbo beat Weston Creek Molonglo

by seven wickets, chasing down 165 in just 26.3 overs. Ben Strachan took 5-35 for Dubbo, while Mitch Bower

(74) and Jordan Moran (47 not out) led the way with the bat. Dubbo take on Merewether at Figtree Oval on

Monday after the top-seeded Merewether beat Wyong by six wickets. Having dismissed Wyong for 147, Simon

Moore (81 no) showed his class with the Newcastle side winning with 16 overs to spare. Hamilton-Wickham

(5-105) also needed just 18.1 overs to beat Murray Valley (104) at Figtree Oval.

Meanwhile, South Coast side The Rail and defending Country Plate champions Cootamundra advanced to the

Plate final after Sunday's semi-finals in Tamworth were washed out. Cootamundra are the top seeds and passed

Wauchope RSL, while second-seeded The Rail went through to the final without a ball bowled against Blue

Mountains.

Finally, Southern Highlands side Robertson Burrawang, top seeds in the second-tier Country Shield, on Monday

take on Tamworth Colts in the semi-finals in Tamworth. Albury Wodonga face Clarence River, with the finals

on Tuesday.

ROBUST batting in both lead-up finals by Jack Ireland was not enough

to put the Coffs Harbour District rep team into the final of the SCG

Country Cup.

Coffs won the quarter final meeting against Lake Macquarie by 34 runs,

thanks to an innings of 63 by the young Urunga star who was ably

assisted by Alec Baldwin's knock of 55.

But while Ireland was able to produce an even better 73 in the semi-

final meeting with Hamilton-Wickham, he was the only batsman in the

top order to fire, once Baldwin was sent on his way without scoring.

That was apart from resistance by Craig Haworth (30) and Raja Sandhu

(35) but the total of 200 wasn't enough and the winning side passed the target in the 41st over for the loss of

three wickets.

Coffs Harbour District's loss paves the way for an all-Newcastle grand final with Hamilton-Wickham to meet

Merewether at the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 18.

Clarence River are the 2014/15 McDonald’s Country Shield champions after they beat Robertson-Burrawang by 67 runs in

the Final in Tamworth yesterday (December 30).

Winning the toss and batting, Clarence River hit 6-215 from their 50 overs with Matt Pigg (72) their top scorer.

Pigg shared in a 76 run fifth wicket stand with Mitchell Kroehnert (30no), while Luke Cox made a valuable 18 not out at the

end of the innings.

Nathan Ring was the pick of the Robertson-Burrawang bowlers with figures of 3-29 from his 10 overs.

Robertson-Burrawang’s chase began poorly with the first three wickets falling before the score had passed 20 runs.

Matthew Cupitt (31), Mitchell Wright (37) and Matt Beer (31) did their best to lift their side to victory, however theirs were

the only scores of note as Robertson-Burrawang were bowled out for 148 in 41 overs.

The majority of the wickets were shared between two bowlers.

Brayden Pardoe took 5-26 from six overs while Matt Pigg completed a fine all-round game by snaring 4-44 from 10 overs.

Shield competition as the icing on the cake for local

cricketers. "It's the competition everyone wants to play

in," he said. "When it started 10 years or so ago, it was

the one guys came out of retirement to play in."

Clarence River begins its campaign against Manning River at Ellem Oval on Sunday, determined to go as deep

into the competition as it can. McKenzie who has been out of cricket in recent weeks due to work commitments

is looking forward to the game. "I think we've got a pretty well balanced team," he said. "I think we've got a

pretty good opening bowling attack with Chardy (Brad Chard) and Nathan Blanch. "They've both started the

season taking plenty of wickets and we have some good back ups with Brendan Cleaver, Brayden Pardoe and a

few others."

He said the team's performance in beating Lower Clarence in the first game of the season was important for the

team. "Winning that first game is always important in a rep season," he said. "It's a confidence booster and gets

the team expecting to win straight off the bat." McKenzie knows nothing about the visiting team, but this did

not worry him. "It's better for us to worry about our game and what we can control when we're on the field," he

said. "If we stick to how we want to play the game we'll be giving ourselves the best chance of getting the right

result for us."

Sunday. In a low scoring affair, Clarence was bowled

out for 146 on a slow Ellem Oval surface, opener Tim

Tilse top scoring with 45. The total did not look

enough as Manning cruised along at seven runs per

over at the start of its innings.

Bob McKenzie, who made a quickfire 26 before holing out in the deep off the bowling of spinner Rick

Campbell (4 for 21 off 4.5), said a vast improvement with the bat would be required to defeat Lismore in th e

quarter-final on November 30. "I think we used our get out of jail free card," McKenzie said.

"Brendan Cleaver and Tim Tilse did a great job to set a platform and we could've been looking at a total of 220

or 230. "I still thought we had the bowling attack to defend our total and luckily things went out way.

"For our next game, first and foremost we have to bat for 50 overs and value our wickets. We lost our wickets to

a lot of loose shots."

Lismore defeated defending champions Ballina to book its spot in the quarter finals. The winner of Clarence

River and Lismore will travel to Tamworth for the finals of the Country Shield on December 29 and 30.

Clarence will name its side to take on Lismore later this week.

CLARENCE River is two matches away from

Country Shield glory following a resolute 31-run

win over Lismore at Oakes Oval on Sunday. The

Grafton-based representative side now travels to

Tamworth for the semi-final to be played on

December 29.

With Clarence in trouble at 3-11, number five

batsman Jake Kroehnert (44) dug in his heels to

thwart Lismore's pace attack in a display of maturity beyond his years. The North Coast Under-19 left-handed

batsman was soon joined at the crease by 42-year-old veteran Matt Pigg (48). The pair rolled up their sleeves to

put on a 74-run 5th wicket partnership. "That partnership won the game for us," Clarence captain Bob

McKenzie said. "At 4 for 23 we could easily have been rolled but Jake and Matt batted for a good period of time

to steady the ship and get to a total we could bowl at."

The partnership was a case of the master and the apprentice. Veteran Pigg showed why he has long been

considered one of the Clarence Valley's best cricketers, until falling victim to Lismore captain Luke Cleaver's

classic catch in the deep. Meanwhile Kroehnert - Brothers Cricket Club's teenage Premier League captain -

gave a glimpse of things to come as he delivered his first of no doubt countless quality performances for the

senior representative outfit.

Tom Kroehnert (10) was the only other batsman to reach double figures as Clarence scraped to 153 off 46.2

overs against a disciplined bowling attack led by Brendan Mitchell (5-12 off 10 overs).

However, Clarence's bowlers returned fire as Lismore started in almost iden tical fashion. Brad Chard (2-11 off

10) and Nathan Blanch (3-43) ripped through the top order to have Lismore 4-27. The runs soon dried up and

the experience of Pigg (1-15 off 6.2, 3 catches) and Troy McLaren (2-22 off 10) ensured Lismore fell short of

the target, all out for 122. "We've got a really handy bowling attack," McKenzie said. "They've done it for us in

those tight games for a few years now and they did it again."

McKenzie believes Clarence River has every reason to be confident of further success when it plays in

Tamworth. "The further you get the tougher it is but any team is beatable on any day," he said. "We beat

Lismore who beat Ballina who won it last year, so we can be confident we can go out there and do something

special. Hopefully everyone can go up there and get the job done."

SELECTORS have recalled Coutts Crossing captain Luke

Cox into an otherwise unchanged Clarence River side to

travel to Tamworth at the end of the month. After wins

over Manning River and Lismore, Clarence River has been

drawn to take on Albury-Wodonga Colts in the statewide

McDonalds Country Shield semi-final at Riverside No.1

Oval on Monday, December 29.

A dip in form followed by a back injury saw Cox miss the quarter-final win in Lismore on November 30. A

subsequent change of approach in club cricket, including a move from opening batsman to the middle order, has

paid off, with his weight of runs in important situations forcing selectors to give him the nod.

"Coxy has been getting runs in the lower middle order and if he comes into the starting XI that's where he'll

bat," captain Bob McKenzie said. "He's also a back-up wicketkeeper for Matt Dougherty." Cox has started to

warm to his newfound position down the order. "I like opening, but I'm probably better off down the order

because I like to play my shots," Cox said. "It's good for the town and for cricket that we've made it this far.

"Hopefully I get the chance to play at Tamworth, score runs and contribute to the team."

The side will train and hold a team meeting at the Ryan St nets from 5pm on Monday. "It's been a while since

we've reached this level of competition," McKenzie said. "It's a bit higher standard than the local Inter-District

and a chance to play some good cricket."

CLARENCE River has suffered a severe blow to its

Country Shield chances one week out from its semi-final

date with Albury-Wodonga Colts. Strike bowler Nathan

Blanch suffered a serious finger injury attempting to catch

a ball during Westlawn's CRCA Premier League clash

against GDSC Easts at McKittrick Park on Saturday.

Westlawn captain Pat Vidler said Blanch yesterday

underwent surgery at Coffs Harbour.

"I was bowling at the time and Tim White hit one out of the middle," Vidler said. "Nathan tried to take a low

catch to his right at mid on and smashed his pinkie on his bowling hand to bits. "The bone was sticking out of

both knuckles; it was not pretty. "It's hard to say how long he'll be out for until we find out the success of the

surgery. "He's a big loss for us. We're going to miss him dearly. "All we can do is wish him all the best and

hope for the best outcome."

Top wicket-taker Blanch shattered to miss Country Shield semi - 24th Dec 2014

CLARENCE River will go into its Country Shield semi-

final with only one bearded warrior spearheading the

attack. In recent matches, Brad Chard and Nathan Blanch

have sent ominous warning shots to their opponents before

a ball has been bowled, with both fast bowlers sporting

Ned Kelly-esque long beards. But Blanch has been forced

to withdraw after he suffered a double dislocation of the

little finger on his bowling hand while fielding on

Saturday.

"I'm devastated," Blanch said. "This is the first time we've made it to this level while I've been in the side and I

was looking forward to it."

Clarence River takes on Albury-Wodonga Colts in Tamworth this Monday, with the winner to play either

Tamworth Colts or Robertson Burrawang in the final on Tuesday. Blanch will instead stay behind in Grafton.

"I'll spend that time with the family," he said. "It would kill me to watch. But I wish the boys all the best."

His absence leaves a shortage in the pace-bowling ranks, with batting all-rounder Ryan Cotten earning a recall

to fill the vacancy in the 13-man squad. Captain Bob McKenzie will have to call upon the experience of his slow

bowlers or the medium pace of Jake and Mitch Kroehnert to shoulder the extra workload.

Cotten was on a rugby union tour of Spain when Clarence River defeated Lismore in the quarter-final on

November 30. He found out he was a late inclusion to Tamworth when selector and player Troy McLaren

knocked on his door on Monday afternoon. "He told me I'm back in and to get down to J.J. Lawrence for a team

meeting," Cotten said. "I hope I can get a run, for sure. It's a good experience, a different level of competition -

a lot harder than club."

Cotten plays alongside Blanch for third-placed Westlawn in the CRCA Premier League competition and said he

would be sorely missed at club level. "It's going to be a big loss," Cotten said. "He's our No.1 strike bowler,

gets lots of wickets and bowls plenty of overs."

Blanch is the runaway leading wicket-taker of CRCA Premier League at the Christmas break, with 34 at an

average of 12.85. Harwood's Hayden McMahon is next on 19 wickets. Blanch was on track to surpass the 53

wickets he achieved last season. "It makes me unhappy," Blanch said at the thought of missing the remainder of

the club season.

"We were coming last for three or four years but came back and made the semis last season. When you're doing

well, it makes it more fun. "I've been loving my cricket and was looking for 50 wickets this season."

Turning North to boost Country Shield chances - 29th Dec 2014

THE Clarence River Cricket Association representative

team will be looking for some guidance from its 33-year-old

rookie Bill North in Tamworth today. North will bat at

number three for CRCA when it takes on Albury Wodonga

Colts in the semi-final of the McDonalds Country Shield.

The Country Shield is the second rung of the State-wide

NSW Country Cricket competition.

North is in his second season in the GDSC Premier League competition with the Coutts Crossing Club. The rep

selectors have been impressed with his steady batting and handy off-spin bowling. But the all-rounder, who

played in the Tamworth competition from 2010 to 2012, will also bring some knowledge of local conditions to

the CRCA leadership group.

North has fond memories at the match venue, batting in the same fashion the CRCA selectors want from him

today. "I played out five maiden overs when my team (City United) won its only game of the 2010-11 season

against the defending premiers South Tamworth," he said.

North's batting has hit a lean patch in recent weeks after scoring 51 against Tucabia earlier in the season. "That

50 was against the opening attack we're taking to Tamworth," he said. "But my main role is to soak up some

overs with the new ball. It I get 50 from 30 overs, the team will be happy." North said the only team form line

he could take into today's game comes from scorecards. "Albury Wodonga seems capable of knocking up some

big scores," he said.

He said the Clarence line-up had been tested making the semi-final, knocking over Lismore to get into the final

four. "The Lismore attack was pretty good. We had to face some pretty sharp bowling which has given us a

good idea of what we'll likely be facing," he said. North said the Riverside ground was one of the city's best

wickets with a fast outfield. "It's generally a pretty good cricket wicket, with something in it for bowlers who

can do something with the ball."

North has some personal motivation for success in this competition. "My older brother, Doug, has won a

Country Plate, with Cobar in 2006-07," North said. "The Country Shield is the next tier up from the plate, so

winning that would help me get out of my brother's shadow."

Should Clarence River win today, it will face the winner of the game between Robertson Burrawang and

Tamworth Colts in the final tomorrow.

McDonald’s Country Shield final after upsetting

Cricket Albury Wodonga Colts in a rain-affected semi-final at Dick Edwards Oval yesterday. The

start was delayed by two-and-a-half hours for the pitch to dry out and the game reduced to 41-overs-

a-side.

Sensing there might be a bit in the wicket, CAW sent Clarence in. They got early reward, with Clarence 2-9 and then 4-24. Skipper Bob McKenzie (12) and Matt Pigg started the recovery with a 28-run stand and, from there,

they steadily built to post 136. Pigg was the pillar with 46 and was the last wicket to fall. They had been looking for about 150 and, while they were a few short of that, the bowlers had something to

bowl at. “We thought it was defendable on that pitch,” manager Rhonda Disson said. It wasn’t the easiest to bat on, as CAW also found out. After a 23-run opening stand between Ash Borello (17)

and Sam O’Connor (5), they lost 5-18. Chris Bridle (12) and John Spencer (12) briefly stemmed the deluge of wickets but, when Brad Chard trapped Spencer in front and bowled Bridle a run later, it sparked another collapse. They lost 3-9 to be all out for 75.

“We bowled very well and fielded great,” Disson said. Chard led the charge with 4-20. They only had to use the four bowlers and all got in on the spoils, with Troy McLaren claiming 3-23, Chard’s new ball partner

Brayden Pardoe 2-18 and Pigg 1-14. Earlier, Ryan DeVries (4-15) had caused the carnage in the Clarence top order. Bridle also chimed in with 3-23.

VETERAN all-rounder Matt Pigg has led from the

front during the Clarence River Cricket

Association's successful Country Shield campaign

in Tamworth. Pigg yesterday blasted 72 from 63

deliveries and backed up with four wickets as

CRCA downed Robertson Burrawang in the shield

final on No.1 Sportsground.

And on Monday, his 46 out of a team total of 136 on a rain-affected wicket gave his team a score way out of

reach of the Albury Wodonga Colts who only made 73 in the run chase. CRCA skipper Bob McKenzie said

Monday's semi-final could have gone either way after he lost the toss and his side was asked to bat. "The

wicket was absolutely soaked, we were 6-60 and anything could have happened," McKenzie said. "But Piggy

threw out the anchor and was able to get us up to a score we thought we could defend."

The run chase became academic when left-arm quick Brad Chard came back for his second spell. "Chardy had

0-9 off his first spell but when he came back and his last spell was devastating," McKenzie said. "He picked up

three wickets - two bowled and an lbw - where the batsmen were not even playing shots."

In the final, the scene for Pigg's heroics was set up by a 49-run stand between Jake Kroehnert, 28, and Bill

North, 25. "Jake and Bill hung in there after we lost early wickets and soaked up some overs," McKenzie said.

"Our tactics were to have some wickets in hand and have a dash at the end and set a total that way." With Pigg

leading the way and a brisk 30no from Mitch Kroehnert and 18no from six balls from Luke Cox, CRCA

smashed around 100 from the final 10 overs.

McKenzie said Brayden Pardoe claimed three quick wickets at the start of the innings and two more at the end

to finish with 5-26. "They consolidated a bit and then Piggy got into their middle order." The Robertson

Burrawang side was also hampered by an injury to its captain Nathan Wright who dislocated his shoulder while

fielding. He batted at seven but only managed a two-ball duck, lbw to Pigg.

THERE might not be too many man of the

match performances left in Clarence Valley

cricketing veteran Matt Pigg. Pigg, 42, played a

starring role in the Clarence River Cricket

Association's campaign to win the McDonalds

Country Shield in Tamworth on Tuesday.

In Monday's semi-final on a rain-drenched wicket against top seeds Albury Wodonga, Pigg battled to 46 as

CRCA scrambled to a match-winning total of 136. In next day's final Pigg went one better, smashing 72 from

63 balls then backing up with 4-44 from 10 overs of off-spin bowling against Robertson Burrawang.

But the veteran was feeling it after two days of tough cricket. "It's a great feeling to be able to do it, probably all

the better because for me that's quite possibly the last time I will be able to physically play that big a role," he

said. "Physically I'm struggling after two straight days of cricket."

Winning the Country Shield certainly rates as his cricket highlight. "Apart from the first grand final we won, I

can't remember when we won any of the others," he said. "But I'll remember the day we won the Country

Shield for the rest of my life."

Pigg said while some of the veterans in the team would take a similar enjoyment from the team's success, it is

the younger players who would get the most out of it. "I have seen young Jake Kroehnert and Brayden Pardoe

grow so much through these games, beginning with the game against Lismore," he said.

Pardoe took 5-26 in the final and Kroehnert combined in a vital 49-run partnership with Bill North to set up the

team for its late innings dash. "Looking at the way their games are developing I can see that cricket around here

is in good hands," Pigg said.

He was also full of praise for some devastating fast bowling from former Australian under-19 representative

Brad Chard. "In the semi-final his bowling was smart and quick," said Pigg, who witnessed it from first slip.

"He was quick, but not scary quick, but it was the smart way he did it.

"He bowled four outswingers to this left hander, gradually moving the ball closer to the stumps. "Then on the

fifth ball he bowled a straight one, angling back in. The batter never thought about playing it and he was clean

bowled. "Then he did it again to the next batter. That's smart bowling, deceiving a batsman (like that)."

THE semi-finals and final of the 2014/15 McDonalds

Country Plate and Country Shield cricket competitions will both be played in Tamworth from December 28 to

30. Lower Clarence has reached the Country Plate semi-finals the past two seasons, including travelling to the Riverina in 2013/14 where the team lost to Albion Park.

Last season, Clarence River was knocked out of the Country Shield in round three by eventual champions Ballina.

The 2014/15 SCG Country Cup Carnival will be held in the Illawarra region on December 28-29.

Ballina will host the Northern tier of the NSW Country Championships on November 21 to 23 with Griffith hosting the Southern tier.

The 2015 Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Cricket Championships will be hosted by Bendigo, Victoria on January 4-12.

THERE will be no fairytale in 2014/15 for

Lower Clarence after the representative side

was bundled out in its first outing of the

NSW Country Plate.

The side had reached consecutive semi-

finals of the statewide competition the past

two seasons and subsequently had bye

rounds until Sunday's round three encounter with Wauchope, who recorded a comprehensive 10-wicket win

over Nambucca Valley in round two on October 26.

Reeling from a painful loss to Clarence River the week before in NCCC Inter-District competition, Lower

Clarence's top order again faltered when it mattered most. Chasing 192 for victory, Lower lost both its openers

without scoring while Ben McMahon (54) was the shining light of the top order. Tail-enders Zac Honeybrook

(20) and Lachlan Johnson (10) pushed towards the total, but in the end the hosts were 25 runs short. "The

young fellas nearly got us home," Lower Clarence captain Luke Many said.

"We have a group who are under-16 or just out of 16s and have won a few inter-district comps between them.

This is the next step up for them and if we can keep them around we will be pretty strong once they get a few

games under their belt," Many said. Brett O'Connor had a solid all-round game, contributing 32 runs, taking 2

for 21 off 8 overs and effecting two run-outs.

CLARENCE River's pace trio proved the difference in the North

Coast Inter-District Cricket local derby at Harwood Oval on

Sunday. Lower Clarence crumbled to 7 for 34 against the new ball, with Brayden Pardoe (4 for 33 off 8 overs) removing top-order batsmen Matt Young (9), Mark Ensbey (0) and Ben

McMahon (0) in consecutive deliveries. It was the left -arm inswing bowler's first hat-trick. "There was a fair bit of swing yesterday and it was working in my favour," Pardoe said.

Openers Brad Chard (1 for 14 off 7) and Nathan Blanch (2 for 18 off 6) softened the top -order before Pardoe's

destructive spell. Clarence River captain Tom Kroehnert said: "Braydo's a very handy bowler and he's awfully hard to handle, especially when the ball is swinging. "Those three balls would've got anyone out."

On the back of three ducks as opening batsman for club side Lawrence, Josh Cormick was the unlikely saviour at No.10 for Lower. But the 18-year-old relished the opportunity against the older ball to top score with 26 out

of the total of 85. Lower captain Luke Many conceded: "Their bowlers were just too good. "Just like the grand final last year, our top-order failed.

"Benny (McMahon) and Dick (Ensbey) got a couple of good balls. But there were no demons in the pitch and we've got to be better than that. "If it wasn't for a couple of our younger kids who showed us how to play at the

end of the innings, we could've been out for 50." Brendan Cleaver (2 for 6 off 4) cleaned up the tail and the n continued his good form with the bat, combining with Tim Tilse (20) for a 50-run second-wicket stand and finished 37 not out. Carly Leeson (0 for 16 off 6) prolonged Clarence River's victory with four maidens in her

senior men's representative debut. "She was our best bowler on the day," Many said. "I bowled a couple of custard overs so I put her on and she tightened it right up. "We should've had them on the back foot on about 3 for 5, but dropped a couple of catches."

COFFS Harbour inflicted Clarence River's first loss of the

season in the final round of North Coast Inter-District Cricket

at Ellem Oval yesterday.

The Country Shield champions looked to have made a strong

start when openers Tim Tilse (69) and Matt Dougherty (54)

built a solid platform with a 91-run opening stand for

Clarence River to post 9 for 244 off its 50 overs. "It's good

batting with Matty because you know he's going to get off to a flyer if he gets in, so it gives me a bit more time

to play myself in," Tilse said at the change of innings. "We've got a pretty good total out here. Anything beyond

200 is pretty defendable and we know we've got the bowling attack that can do it." However, a 166-run stand

between Russ Gardner (85) and captain Damon Roots (65) highlighted Coffs Harbour's impressive chase.

A SINGLE wicket was all that stood between Lower Clarence bowing out of the 2014-15 North Coast Cricket Interdistrict

competition and the chance to exact revenge on rivals Clarence River.

Clarence River, Coffs Harbour and Lower Clarence all finished

equal on 15 points with two wins each after the final round on

Sunday. The final standings were determined by a quotient in

which runs for, runs against, wickets lost and wickets taken are

all taken into account. It takes a mathematician to work out

this year's grand finalists after one of the closest finishes imaginable on Sunday.

"I was writing the quotient rule on my leg on the bus trip home," Lower Clarence opening batsman Matt Farrell

said. "The impression we had from the phone calls was Coffs Harbour had scored the runs against Clarence

River seven wickets down. "We were celebrating on the bus because we thought we were in. That was until I

read the paper the next day - they were only six down. We had a shocker in the first game against Grafton. A

few more runs against them would've been helpful. "We knew they'd get through with two really big wins. But

ideally it would've been nice if they won again on Sunday."

Illustrating just how close the equation was, Lower Clarence similarly would have qualified h ad they dismissed

Nambucca Valley at Macksville for five runs less. As it was, Lower Clarence posted 8/262 courtesy of a

blistering start from Brett O'Connor, who blasted 72 off 29 balls, which included eight sixes, before he was

dismissed at 1/93. The next seven wickets fell for 57 runs before Matt Ardrey (36) settled the ship and Zac

Honeybrook (52no) helped boost the total. "Brett hit a six off the first ball and teed off from there," Lower

Clarence captain Ben McMahon said. "Meanwhile, it was the best innings I've ever seen Zac play. He batted

really smart and put it away when it was there to hit."

Honeybrook followed up with three wickets, so too did Jacob McMahon, as Lower Clarence used nine bowlers

to clean up Nambucca Valley for 113. "I gave all the young fellas a bowl and they did the job for us," the

skipper said. "They're the team of the future."

CLARENCE River rep cricket side was not able to reproduce

its winning form from the Country Cup and went down in a

hard-fought battle against Coffs Harbour in the North Coast

Inter-District Cricket final yesterday.

The Coffs Harbour side got off to a blinding start with the bat

after opener Mathew Riddoch hit a quick fire 45 off 32 balls to

start the innings. His performance was backed up well by Tye

Murphy who scored a handy half century for the Coffs side. A

mid-innings fight back by Clarence River bowlers Matt Pigg

(4-39) and Nathan Blanch (3-43) saw the Coffs side struggling at eight wickets down for 161. However a

dogged performance from lower order batsmen Pat Myles (35 no) and Matt Rose (33 no) put together a ninth -

wicket partnership of 76 runs to see the Coffs Harbour side to eight wickets for 237 runs at the end of their

allotted 50 overs.

The Clarence River team, chasing 238 runs for victory, got off to a handy start with the opening pair putting on

around 20 runs before the fall of the first wicket. However, disciplined and attacking bowling from the Coffs

Harbour side saw the Clarence River team dismantled and were bowled out for 107, 131 runs shy of the winning

target. Best bowler Matt Pigg also top-scored for the Clarence River side with 24 not out, however he was

disappointed with his team's performance. "We did it tough out in the middle with the bat," Pigg said. "Their

bowlers were really on point. I was happy with the way I struck the ball but I'm not real happy with the fact that

I top scored with 24. "We're a far better side than that and we have proven that before it's just today wasn't our

day."

For the Coffs Harbour side, Josh Bartlett (3-14) and Brad Miller (3-37) were the pick of the bowlers and shared

in the spoils along with John Lovett (2-14).

Clarence River captain Bob McKenzie said the day was very up and down for the Clarence River side and it was

tough day in the end. "It was an up and down day," McKenzie said. "I thought we did well to restrict them to

237 after they got off to flying start." "We had a loss today and it was tough one. We just couldn't get any

partnerships together. We needed a good 100 run or 80 run partnership but it just wasn't happening for the boys

out in the middle. "They played really well. We obviously cou ld have played better and we know that, but

unfortunately that's just how cricket goes sometimes."

"I think rep cricket is a great thing; it gets all the good players together," he said. "People can learn things from

other players that you don't get to learn from guys in your own club. Even though we're opponents on a week to

week basis, were truly friends when it comes down to it."

The Daily Examiner's own Sports Editor Bill North played for the Clarence River side however it wasn't a day

to remember for Northy. When bowling North was carted to all corners of the ground and was hooked after two

overs with figures of no wickets for 24 runs. With the bat it was a little better as he scored the side's third -

highest total of 14.

playing club cricket with Park Beach Bowling

Club Colts and spend his time helping

youngsters achieve what he did at the top level.

"It's a great way for Craig to go out in what's

been Coffs Harbour District's most successful

rep season for decades," club mate Matt Rose said. "Third in the SCG Country Cup, Interdistrict champions and

the age divisions have played and won numerous finals with plenty making representative teams."

The victory was more amazing given four changes were made as play began. "I was buying a box of beer to

take up for the game when I got the phone call to bring my gear," Rose said. "After getting out for a duck the

day before there wasn't much to recommend me for the job, so it was a case of getting stuck in."

Matt Riddoch's late inclusion proved a masterstroke. The Urunga skipper launched a rescue mission when Coffs

were struggling at 2-86 after 12 overs. He scored 45 off 42 deliveries to straighten the innings and received

huge support from Tyh Murphy's half century. Riddoch's dig was significant enough to earn man -of-the-match

honours as Coffs Harbour rattled up 8-237 for the 50 overs. There was an attack of the yips in the latter stages

but a second rescue was made by tail-enders Rose and Pat Myles, who put on 76 for the last wicket.

In reply, Clarence River fell well short and were all out for 107. "I can't say we found them easy and the

wickets only came every now and then," Rose admitted. The home side's demise came after 20 overs when they

lost three wickets for seven runs to be 6-67, with little prospect of rising. "Josh Bartlett shook them up and

finished with 3-28," Rose added. "Brad Lewis got rid of a couple and John Lovett and Damon Rootes took care

of the last of them."

For Rootes, this will be something to savour years from now when he looks back on his sporting career. Just 18,

not many can say they have captained a winning team at this level. As one great rep career (Haworth) ends,

perhaps another is just beginning.

GOLD COAST TOUR REPORT - 2015

This was the first NCCC tour for all but 2 of the U12s including myself. It was a very

successfully run and enjoyable trip.

Supported by Brendan Palmer (U12s manager) and Janet Grieve (tour manager) the U12s and

I had a great time and learnt a lot about touring, other teams and cricket in general.

My focus before the tour was to arm the parents with as much information as possible to

prepare them and the players. Regular emails, text messages and phone calls saw us prepare

as best we could.

The Southport School (TSS) were fantastic

hosts, the accommodation and food was

excellent, the only complaint would be the

heat and humidity none of which are in our

control.

The games were well organised both against

Cricket Gold Coast (CGC) and TSS. CGC

won the toss on the first day and batted in

oppressive heat so they allowed us to bat first

the following day. We may have lost both

games but our improvement in the second

game was encouraging.

CGC are a well organised outfit full of good cricketers and showed excellent sportsmanship. I

enjoyed working with their coach Trevor to make the games run smoothly and efficiently. A

quick over rate and zero sledging was encouraged by both of us.

We played TSS in the drizzling rain in front

of an audience that included the NRL Gold

Coast Titans. Batting first we made 66 then

rolled them for 23, our first win of the tour.

We then organised a T20 game while the

U14’s and U15s were finishing their games.

TSS batted first making a competitive 103

and we failed to make the total needing 10 off

the last over.

From a coaches point of view I feel the

players need to improve in a number of areas.

They need to deal with their nervousness better which probably will come with experience

and exposure to cricket at this higher level. I am sure they would not be that nervous in a club

game and even an inter district game where they are more dominant.

Batting stance and simply watching the ball needs to be improved particularly amongst those

who are more proficient bowlers. The basics of batting like foot to the ball, head over the ball

and playing straight early also need to be addressed. We can discuss strategies to rectify this

problem this Emerging Blues season.

We lost our specialist keeper before the tour and with no back up keeper we had to make do

with giving a few kids a go at it. We could possibly have more emphasis on keeping as a skill

in the NCCA in the U12s to encourage the development of our wicket keepers.

Our bowling plan was simple, pitch up and

hit the stumps, anyone who strayed from that

plan usually suffered at the hands of the

competent GC batsmen. We have indentified

two very good young leg spinners in Clancy

Stevens NBJCA and Harry McMillan

CHDJCA. These two should be targeted for

future development as they are consistently

landing good leg breaks and displaying skills

far beyond their years.

For next year’s tour I suggest we take an U13s team as well. 10 of the 12 U12s will go into

this age group but most would not be good enough for an U14s team. I have identified

Andrew Cahill from CRJCA as a potential coach or manager. We have ample opposition for

them as CGC and TSS field teams in this age group. We could hire the larger bus and there is

enough accommodation at TSS to house another team. I propose a trial of an U13s team next

tour and see if it works.

Once again thank you for the opportunity to coach the U12s and I would like to volunteer to

do the job again next year.
