Pete Rose is only 77 hits away from tying Tony Gwynn for most career hits at 3362 ... and Rose has 5 full seasons left to do it! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sanford set all time TML team Records for lowest ERA (1.85), fewest hits allowed (1061), fewest runs (362), fewest earned runs (304) and fewest HR allowed (51). Hackensack set an all time TML Record for most shutouts (35) and Beverly set an all time TML Record for fewest walks allowed (233). Offensively (or lack thereof), Moosen set all time TML Records for lowest AVG (.209), lowest OBP (.250), lowest SLG (.274), fewest hits (1130), fewest runs scored (354) and fewest walks drawn (276). Coachella Valley set an all time TML Record for fewest HR hit (33). Many of those records had stood for 20+ years! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The longest winning streak was 15 by Hackensack from 7/3-7/19. Beverly won 16 of their first 17 games. The longest losing streak of 17 games was done by Moosen from 7/31-8/20. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10/22/1968, SB68-AR68, Wrigley Field In a re-match from 1969, Jim Pertierra’s pitching-rich Sanford Browns swept past Willie Jelks’ defending TML Champ Arkansas Travelers. For Jim it was his 2nd TML Championship and 3rd for the franchise. The Browns had reached the TML World Series by taking out Mike Dickinson’s Beverly Hillbillies in 5 games. The Travelers were coming off a sweep of Chick Wade’s Coopers Pond Braves. In the end, it was the TML Record superb pitching staff of Sanford that once again proved that great pitching will indeed stop great hitting!

The Season Story

The age old question was answered, could a strong contender trade for Mickey Mantle for his career. The answer was yes, but the cost was dear as Albany plummeted. Mike Shannon lad the team in almost all categories, Ron Hunt remained an on base machine. Mantle had 14 homers. That was it for the offense. Pitching was not good either. Larry Jackson stood out with a 3,04 ERA, but a record of 8-14. Jim Perry a 30 game winner in 1968 fell 23 wins short of doing it again. Jim Brewer notched 20 saves on a team that could only win 50. Reinforcements are trickling in as Albany drafted decrepits Smoky Burgess and Jim O'Toole who look to get younger and eventually better. But it is still a long row. The Season Story

Another good season for the Travs as they advance to the world series for the second year in a row in a rematch with Sanford. A repeat was not in the cards, however as the Browns sweep the Travs. Team MVPs were Frank Howard who hit .313 with 54 homers and 137 RBI, both leading the league and Dean Chance who was 26-7 with a 1.98 ERA. The Season Story

A fantastic and exciting season for the Hillbillies as they unexpectedly won the division crown fighting through a three way tie! It all came together in the summer of 1968 led by Denny McClain, Fergie Jenkins, Pat Jarvis and a non-combustible bullpen. Eddie Watt contributed 10 wins out of the pen. The offense was less consistent but still finished 4th overall. Tom Haller paced the offense most of the season and preseason acquisition Cleon Jones performed well in his debut with the team. Willie McCovey led the team with 35 homeruns and 104 rbi. The past looks bright for the next couple of seasons. BLOOMINGTON Burning Bunyans Manager: Bob Weisman (Janet) Age: 53 Occupation: Meteorology Professor

The Season Story

The dead ball era (round 1) came to Bloomington and none of the offense was above average. Only Donn Clendenon and Mickey Stanley of the primary players managed ops of .700. Not surprising for a team that barely had a .610 ops. Still, Clendenon had 23 HR and 78 RBI, close to the top 20 in each. However, he ranked second in K’s with a modern era-like 164 wiffs and hit into 24 DP’s. Still, you’d better get the Bunyans staring early, since they were 11 games over .500 in 1-run decisions. That was thanks to starters Al McBean (12-16, 1.27 WHIP, 3.18 ERA) and Mike McCormick (10-12, 3.48 ERA, 1.23 WHIP) and the bullpen work of Claude Raymond and Elroy Face (32-40 combined in saves). Neither Ken Holtzman nor Gary Waslewski (or is it Mike Wazowski) were awful, but they now rank in the Top 5 for single season losses with Waslewski tied for first. The dead ball era will continue for the Burning Bunyans into 1967. Yes, it won’t even be an Impossible Dream season for Bloomington. CHETICAMP Micmacs Manager: Eric Rogers Age: 55 Occupation: Meteorologist

The Season Story

The Retro Micmacs were a solid team on the mound and at the plate in 1968, with the 4th best ERA and 7th best OPS, but were done in by an awful defense, racking up 159 errors and leading to 116 unearned runs. The offense was led by new additions Reichardt, Horton, and McAuliffe, complimenting long-time Micmacs Reggie Smith and Hawk Harrelson (33 HR). Seaver had his usual solid year (2.07 ERA, 17-11, 224 K's). The 67 team looks similar to the 68 squad, with decent enough hitting/pitching to stay in the hunt for a playoff spot. COACHELLA VALLEY Earthquakes Manager: Mike Landin (Teri) Age: 60 Occupation: Retired/Part-time Professor/Softball Player

The Season Story

The owner and fans all knew that this was going to be another tough season. Well, it was. A last place finish with 114 losses. The weak offense was led by Dick Deitz, Ron Fairly, Mike Lum, Chico Salmon, Dick Dietz and Luis Aparicio, but none even reached 50 RC for the season! In fact, the team set a new TML low mark for HRs in a season, only hitting 33 HR. (No one hit more than 5.) Dave Marshall was the most productive, hitting .317 off the bench as a pinch-hitter. Pitching wise, the starting staff once again boasted *four* 20-game losers, yet three of the four had ERAs under 4. The run support was just non-existent. Nearly half the team wins came from the bullpen, led by Al Worthington (2.18, 17 SV). The bullpen only blew one lead after 7 innings, the best in the league! Things are looking “up” for the past, but another season of 100+ losses is in store for 1967. COOPERS POND Braves Manager: Chick Wade (Debbie) Age: 63 Occupation: Retired/Youth Baseball Coach/Golfer

The Season Story

1968 was the move into the building years, but somehow the Braves were good enough to slip into the playoffs. It certainly was not because of the team power. The Braves only hit 81 HRs for the season. The starting pitching was fairly good. McNally had 19 wins. Brunet, Kaat and Hunter also pitched fairly well. The previous few years look to be fairly lean! DULUTH Thundercats Manager: Kevin Tyle (Bryan) Age: 49 Occupation: Computer Administrator/Meteorologist

The Season Story

A very disappointing season for the Cats, as all signs pointed to a much stronger finish. Yet it never got going until the end of the season; by then Duluth was light years away from the conference leaders. Good seasons were had by Billy Williams on offense and Bob Gibson on the mound, although the latter did not come close to his actual numbers with the Cardinals. The past looks filled with mediocrity, although we do have Maris to look backward to in 1961! HACKENSACK Bulls Manager: Roy Gorham (Brandy) Age: 36 Occupation: Engineer

The Season Story

This was the best team in franchise history, but the Bulls still missed the playoffs as 108 wins was only good enough for 3rd place. Jimmy Wynn was the rock of the lineup as the rest of the starters struggled in the "Year of the Pitcher". The bench was solid, as Gary Holman moved into the leadoff spot for the stretch run and jumpstarted the offense. The pitching staff was phenomenal, breaking the TML record for shutouts with 35 clean sheets. The pitchers also clouted 11 homeruns, more than all the middle infielders combined, who managed only 5. MOOSEN Squirrel Manager: Bill Graham (Cathy) Age: 63 Occupation: Attorney

The Season Story

Having seen the best of times with this team, we are now seeing the worst of times. The Squirrel had a respectable fifth best team E.R.A. at 2.83 but the team Batting Average of .209 was the league's worst. Gary Peters was a workhorse for the Squirrel and wound up a 20 game loser for his efforts. On the offensive side of the ball... What offense? The team hit a total of 59 HRs. Only Coachella at 33 HRs had fewer. Moosen stole only 16 bases all season and got caught 12 times. We've had teams that stole 16 bases on a weekend. Needless to say, the re-building will continue. NORTH ADAMS Bevers Manager: Mike Ameen (Beverly) Age: 49 Occupation: Restaurant Owner/College Softball Coach

The Season Story

Another losing season for the 1968 Bevers. Finished tied for 6th in our division at 69-91. These middle 1960's years look lean for the Bevers. The hope from the fan base is that General Manager Ameen will earn his money and draft and trade smartly for a run in the JFK years! Don Drysdale (14 wins 3.23) had a nice rookie season on the mound. Joe Coleman (12 wins 4.23) and Steve Blass (10 wins 3.43) threw well at times but the staff was not strong enough to compete. Wayne Granger saved 12 games and checked in with a 3.45 ERA. Not much better results from the Bevers offense. No starter hit over .300. Bert Campaneris (.294) led the team. Roberto Clemente hit a disappointing .270 but did have 14 doubles, 11 triples and 14 homeruns. Willie Stargell led the team with 22 Homers and 65 RBI's. Campaneris did steal 34 bases. Things look bleak in the short run for the Bevers. If you see Ameen on the street tell him if he can’t turn it around soon he should retire! PENSACOLA Pelicans Manager: Mark Hetterich (Connie) Age: 66 Occupation: Program Manager & Instructional Designer

The Season Story

An anemic offense contributed to a losing record, .475 winning percentage and 5th place finish in the Atmospheric Conference. The pitching staff was solid with a 3.17 ERA. The offense was led by Sal Bando who led the team in games played 160, doubles 32 and average .294. Bob Alison hit 20 dingers to lead the team. Singer led the pitching staff with a 2.66 era. Hardin won 16 games. The pen was disappointing as real life ERAs and game ERAs varied drastically...Lindblad 2.41 to 4.19 and Bolin 1.98 to 3.72 are examples. TML 1967 will likely be more of the same as the pitchers will be at 3.13 ERA (7th in the league) and the batters .233 (14th in the league). This will be a long rebuilding process. PERTH Diamond Cats Manager: Steve Syzdek (Suzanne) Age: 42 Occupation: Attorney

The Season Story

Manager Syzdek walked into a good situation when he took over the Tennessee franchise. A name change and a move to Fenway Park helped the team get even better! Perth’s inaugural season in the TML Retro League was a successful one and the team took the Atmospheric Conference Wildcard spot. However, due to some numerical PED’s the Cats were disqualified. The offense was paced by Reggie Jackson, Brooks Robinson, Joe Torre and Richie Allen and was bolstered by a decent pack of support players. Perth was blessed with a solid pitching staff lead by Jim Merritt and Gary Nolan. Joe Hoerner kicked in 20 saves. Perth has made some off season moves and has, hopefully, positioned the team for another playoff run in 1967! The Season Story

After caretaking 3 other teams for the past 6 seasons, it was a change to get down to only 1. The offense settled around Carl Yastrzemski as Yaz won the batting title hitting much higher than he did in real life as he murdered right hand pitching all season. Yaz's homerun power was down but his slugging percentage was almost right on from real life. Cesar Tovar was also indispensible both at the plate and in the field Joe Horlen and Milt Pappas both were workhorses but did not hit the winner's circle as much as we needed. Not their fault. Looking forward to 1967 for the obvious reasons. SIOUX FALLS Fighting Sioux Manager: Jeff Chapman (Sally) Age: 47 Occupation: NWS Meteorologist

The Season Story

It had only happened once in a decade, but for the second time in three years the Fighting Sioux ended up on the wrong side of .500. Slightly better than average hitting, slightly worse than average pitching, but kicking the ball around the field like a Rockette. Franchise records were tied by Offensive co-MVPs Staub (51 doubles) and Horton (20 intentional walks). On the mound, Perry proved to be the workhorse, leading the team in wins AND losses! Expectations are for another mediocre season to precede, led by a dismal and bleak past. Makes for some motivational ticket sale posters! At least the fans had the chance to see "Heidi" in its entirety. SANFORD Browns Manager: Jim Pertierra (Janet) Age: 63 Occupation: Contract Supervisor - Cushman and Wakefield

TML Champion

The Season Story

The Browns went to their 4th straight World Series and evened it up with the great Arkansas team in a shocking sweep in netting the Browns' 2nd Retro title. The Offense was not stellar but it was timely. Other than Curt Flood, you won't find many Browns in the league leaders. Before the season, the Browns made two key trades and a huge pickup at the end of the 1st round of the draft netting Vicente Romo, who was outrageous, Sonny Siebert, the ERA champion and Tom Murphy with Merv Rettenmund who were both key parts. In the draft, Sam McDowell joined up and displaced last year's ace Mickey Lolich in becoming the stopper. It was all pitching and it was a huge surprise. Another fine year for the Browns. Stat Key

RC (Runs Created) = [(A times B) plus C], all divided by D, where

A = H + BB + HBP - CS – GIDP B = TB + [.26 x (BB - IBB + HBP)] C = .52 x (SH + SF + SB) D = AB + BB + HBP + SH + SF

RC / 27 outs: runs created per 27 outs; in other words, the number of runs a player would create if he were to bat in all nine positions in the batting order. QS (Quality Starts): the number of starts in which a pitcher pitches six (6) innings or more and gives up three (3) runs or fewer. OAVG: the batting percentage against each pitcher. ************************************************************** Batting & Pitching Leaders: the following symbols were used to denote individual accomplishments that were record-breakers:

♦ - TML Record

◊ - Tied TML Record Team Stats: an asterisk ( * ) preceding any stat indicates that the player or pitcher led his Association in that stat category; a caret ( ^ ) indicates that the player or pitcher tied for the lead in his Association in that stat category.
