Elders update

Yo wiksas?

The Elder's have been keeping busy as always. From

catering to painting their building and meeting weekly. The

trip has been set in store. We depart Monday July 6 at 9am.

We will return Friday July 10 at 4pm.

Please be aware that there are surveillance cameras all

around the Elder's Center. We have noticed someone trying

to climb in the locked windows. Should you be caught, you

will face charges & possibly fines is any damages have been

done. Please teach your children to respect other's and their

property.

We will share photos in the next newsletter.

The Elders would like to thank Ernie Hanuse & Brian yet

again for all their hard work they have done in painting the

Elder's Center.

Please note that I will be off July 13 to 17.

From Andrea Walkus-Andrew:

We, the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Health and Family Services, had a successful eyeglasses clinic on

Wednesday, June 24. Almost everyone showed up for their appointments – thank you for that. I’ve

attached a notice in regards to that clinic. Dr. Bjarnson said that we may be able to have another one in

the future – we just need to work with the other two communities – Kwakiutl and Quatsino.

Also, in the works is a visit from Dr. Reynolds. He will be here on the morning of August 10. He is an

endocrinologist and can advise on the following:

Diabetes

Thyroid disease

Cholesterol

High blood pressure

Polycystic ovary syndrome

Menopause

Just to name a few.

Nelson Bruce and the ITHA teleopthalmology team will be here September 23 and 24 for all those

diabetes and prediabetes clients. If you have been having trouble with your eyes due to diabetes, then you

can make an appointment with them.

I am very happy to be working with Joanne Brotchie. One of the things we are doing is visiting Elders

and getting information regarding medications, Care cards, etc. You will see us around the reserve and

that is what we will be doing.

Please note that some Care cards expire when a child turns 18. Your card may be rejected because of that.

Please call 1-800-317-7878 if you think your card is expired. Also note that children’s Care cards will

become invalid if the parent they are registered under dies. If you need to renew, these are the things you

need for renewal:

Copy of status card

Copy of birth certificate

Residential and post office address

Current phone number

I will be out of the office for my holidays on July 17, 20, and 21.

Please call me at 250-902-2275 if you have any questions.

Lou and Elizabeth’s Family would like to wish the following a very happy birthday: Tanya Speck, Gary

Walkus, Victor Johnny, Danika Swain-Wallace, Jack Dick, Louie Walkus III, Maison Charlie, and Ollie

Walkus Sr. Also, belated 36th anniversary wishes to Jack and Sue. Wishing you many more years of

happiness. Love to all of you ♥

Vision Clinic

Yesterday, June 24, 2015, Dr. Jarrod Bjarnson, optician Alma, and booking Zaynab, set up at the

Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Health & Family Services.

I had booked 35 people for this eyeglasses clinic and of the 35:

31 attended

o 23 were band members

o 8 were non-band members

o 3 cancelled their appointments

o 1 didn’t cancel

The appointments ran smoothly and we were well ahead of schedule. In speaking with Dr.

Bjarnson, he said we could probably book more people if we wanted to.

He also said there could be a good possibility of having another vision clinic in a few months if the

other two bands would be in agreement.

o In order for us to have another one, we need commitment from 35+ people.

Remember that non-band members (non-ITHA) members can submit their names

for approval, it would just be under MSP.

Also, those without MSP may put their names in for consideration – they’ll just have

to pay the eye exam fee (this clinic’s eye exam fee was $46.17).

Children under the age of 19 and adults over the age of 64, are also strongly

encouraged to get their eyes checked annually.

Joanne picked up some clients for their appointments and made many trips to the Hall to see if

any of our clients were still there. I made several calls and sent texts. So, thank you to all that

attended. Without you there would be no clinic.

Now, that we know how this vision clinic works, it will be smoother next time (we hope). If you are

interested in putting your name in for the next vision clinic, please call me at 250-902-2275 or Joanne at

250-902-2274.
