Greetings, Kiwanians and Guests:

Lois and I would like to welcome you to the Wyndham Hotel and the 96th District Convention in the historic surroundings of Gettysburg, PA.

During your stay we hope you will take advantage of what the community of Gettysburg and the Convention Committee has in store for you. Free time has been designated for you and your family to enjoy the historic values and the 150th year since the Civil War

battle in Gettysburg occurred.

The committee has successfully implemented some changes that you will notice and some that will not be evident. All efforts have been made for you, your family, and fellow club members to have a great time during the convention.

Please take advantage of the educational forums and the exhibit hall that has been prepared for you to gather new ideas, refresh past project ideas, and reinforce programs that work for you and your club.

Community service is the core of what we as Kiwanians do. Please be involved with the book collection for kids, toiletries for the needy, blood drive, Make a Connection booth, and the Walk for the Eliminate project.

Lois would like to thank those whom have donated theme baskets and purchased tickets to bid on the baskets and items that benefit the District Foundation and the kids of Pennsylvania.

I hope that you make this PA Kiwanis convention an unforgettable experience to be shared with others for the benefit of those we serve in our home communities, throughout the district, and the world.

Sincerely,

Bruce E. Eberly

2012-2013 Pennsylvania District Governor

While she is currently serving as PA Circle K Governor, she has recently been chosen to serve as the Key Club Ambassador of Circle K International. In her spare time, you can find Katie drawing, writing, or exploring Pittsburgh's music scene with her friends. But no matter what she is doing, Katie always has the Kiwanis

Family in her heart!

Stephen Wheadon is entering his senior year at the Wyoming Valley West High School. He was elected Key Club Governor at the 2013 Key Club District Convention/Leadership Conference in Hershey. He is a four-year member of the Wyoming Valley West Key Club and previously served on the district level as District Communications Coordinator. As a busy Christian comedian performing throughout the United States and Canada, Ryan receives over 500 performance invitations and accepts 150 of those annually. Whether it’s his laugh crazed family show or dynamic corporate gigs, there are two things his audiences have come to expect: a flawlessly clean show and sidesplitting comedy.

Page 24: 2013 PA Kiwanis DCON Program

I was born and raised in and around Stroudsburg. I have a twin sister named Michelle and we are close as siblings can be. We have been at each other’s side through childhood, college, and now in business. Together, we are the third generation helping to operate the insurance agency started by my grandfather in 1937. My father is still there, too, guiding us as he works alongside us. As you can imagine, we are a close-knit family. I have been married to my wife Leigh for 10 years. She is the love of my life and my best

friend. I met her at college our freshman year, as she roomed directly across the hall from my twin sister. It took me four years and college graduation before I could convince Leigh to date me, but the rest is history! Leigh and I have a daughter, Elizabeth Ashley. We live in the Pocono Mountains near Stroudsburg. The things I enjoy most are being outdoors, especially hunting, yard work, and athletics. I collect Colin Forbes novels, books relating to places I have visited, and James Bond DVD’s. I hope that we get an opportunity to speak directly. But whether or not we have that opportunity, I hope you will discover that I am a focused individual who cares greatly about people and an idealist who has a firm grip on reality. I am excited about where my service as Governor will lead! I enjoy challenges that seem larger than the ability to accomplish them and building a team to do just that!

Speakers Jim Getty A native of central Illinois, Mr. Getty now resides in historic Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where he portrays the 16th President in a one-man show during the tourist season. The program has received the Pennsylvania Travel Excellence Award.

Getty holds a Master of Music degree from Illinois Wesleyan University. He taught high school choral music in St. Charles and Naperville, Illinois, Sandusky, Ohio and was director of Choral Activities at The University of Maine.

A member of National Speakers Association, Jim finds himself speaking in many schools and colleges, as well as for conventions and business meetings. Having spent years in research of Lincoln and his contemporaries, Getty has developed several “first person” presentations as the President. Participation in National and State Government festivities are a part of Jim’s schedule each year. Getty has worked with The Close-Up Foundation, The Library of Congress, The Smithsonian Seminars, The Corcoran Gallery and National Geographic Tours. Tigrett Corporation, The Loyola College Executive MBA Program and Johns Hopkins University utilize his commanding speaking talents in their leadership seminars. Getty’s voice is that of the President in two A & E programs: (1) Abraham Lincoln; A Biography, and (2) The Assassination of President Lincoln. Jim is Mr. Lincoln in the Turner television film, “The Ironclads.” The Delta Steamboat Company employs Getty to portray President

Lincoln on each of their several, annual Civil War Cruises.

As she made the transition into college, she decided to major in General Science with a focus in Chemistry with hopes of having a career in education. As a freshman at Penn State University, she was asked by the Club President to serve as

THON Co-Chair and then served as Projects Director of her club.

At the 2011 International Convention in Virginia Beach, she was elected to serve as Circle K International Trustee to Sub Region E, including serving the districts of Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky-Tennessee, and of course, Pennsylvania. The following year in New Orleans, she was re-elected to the position.

This past summer in Vancouver, Amelia was elected as International Vice President. Amelia aims to carry the momentum created by previous International boards when it comes to committees, while focusing on the various administrative tasks presented before her.

Kiwanis Heroes Award Recipient Name: Jennifer A. Vare Division: 21 Kiwanis Club: Levittown-Bristol The PA Kiwanis Foundation would like to nominate Jen Vare as a Kiwanis Hero. Jen has been involved in Circle K and then moved on to the Kiwanis Family. She has done many things to help the Levittown-Bristol Kiwanis Club. Jen was also the advisor of St Mary’s Builders club in Bordentown New Jersey. When Hurricane Sandy hit, Jen’s boyfriend’s family was affected by the storm and were concerned about their friends at the Jersey Shore. Jen was asked by members of the PA District if she could brainstorm and talk to people in New Jersey to see what Pennsylvania Kiwanis could do to help out. Jen made contact with members of the LBI Kiwanis Club and the Community Center on Long Beach Island and her work continued into a Service Weekend for PA at the Jersey Shore. Jen had groups of people cleaning up the beach and a run we could participate in. Jen also asked Operation Cupcake to see what they could do and they came down Saturday afternoon, with Kiwanis and Key Clubbers, and gave out cupcakes to the first responders. Through help from the Community Center, they gathered 50 children from different families that had been helped by the food pantry prior to and after Sandy had hit. We played games, gave them a bag full of goodies and we were able to give each family a gift card to go shopping for spring clothes and had lunch with them. What an amazing, impactful weekend it was. She has still been looking for places and or individuals that we can still help. Jen stepped up and got the weekend organized with Kiwanis and other

groups on Long Beach Island.

We need to build a stronger Kiwanis Family so that we can

serve children and youth.

To do that, we cannot let the parameters of how we have always

done things define how we must do things to serve more children

in the future.

Don’t worry about what we eat and where we meet, examine

everything we do to make sure it is relevant to what we should

be doing, try new ideas and don’t fear failing sometimes with

new ways and ideas – it is part of the path to success.

If we are not reaching our goals, we need to examine the reasons

why to make sure that they are not excuses that allow to stay in

the same thought patterns and comfort zones.

Yours in Kiwanis Service,

Kevin Thomas, District Executive Director
