140 Facebook FundraisersThat’s what you helped make possible. Thanks to your support, Kiwanians raised $71,376 through Facebook donations in one week. And $50,000 of this was matched to reach even more kids.

Your generosity helped us make grants to 53 clubs in 11 countries, supporting projects like the Kiwanians in Taiwan that provided nutritious meals to 300 students whose parents were laid off; a club in Uganda distributed food to refugees at 500 homesteads; and members in Virginia supplied packaged food to a food bank serving 330,000 meals.

Amid a global pandemic, your Facebook fundraiser helped Kiwanians serve children around the world.

Where do I start? These days, I’m finding myself going in so many directions – some of which I’m used to and ready for and some of which are taking me by surprise! First, I’ll say that I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy as we begin to come “out of hiding” from the Covid quarantine.

I hope you are working very hard to invite potential members to your meetings and events to show them what an amazing organization we are. It works – even on Zoom. I introduced the membership contest in my Musings a few weeks ago. It’s called “The Race is On – Finish Strong!” and rewards members and clubs who are actively growing our District and clubs by bringing in new members. We also ask that you implement “Operation Engagement” by getting in touch with all the members who haven’t been involved during the pandemic and make sure they are

okay and continuing their membership for the 2020-21 year.

My world has been full of all things virtual – from helping Governor-elect Lonnie and our fantastic staff put on a successful first event to planning for the next two events coming up in our virtual world these days. The Lt. Governor training was a great first virtual accomplishment the last weekend in May and Team Phoenix is excited to get started. We all certainly learned a great deal.

As you should already know, the next event is our virtual Club Excellence Conversations. They are designed for ALL members to join in the conversation to work toward making our clubs be the very best they can be. I believe that all members should be involved in improving their club, not just the officers and board, so the Conversations is to provide tips and information by some outstanding PNW presenters for beginning those conversations at the club level. Please find the information on the District website and plan to attend for a few hours on one of four Saturdays from July 11th through August 1st. I look forward to “seeing” you there!

We previously announced the District board decision to upgrade our District convention (themed “Imagine”) to a Virtual District Convention on the original dates that were scheduled (August 21-23). I’m confident the committee will make sure it’s exciting, engaging and interesting for all Kiwanians. You can look forward to some magical entertainment, interesting education topics, engaging speakers, the opening, closing and delegate sessions, as well as the regular meetings that are always held during the annual convention. The planning committee is hard at work getting ready for all of that and I’m so excited to watch how it all unfolds. There is also a very special gift and a low registration fee for those who attend. Check out the District website – https://kiwanispnw.org/district-convention.html -- for more information!

Thinking about the theme I chose early in this administrative year, when I had no idea what was to come, it certainly turned out to be very appropriate to the work we’re involved in to be creative and “Imagine-ing” what and how we can continue to serve our communities. Just “Imagine” what we can do and how we can do it! I believe we are very lucky to be living in this technological age and able to meet virtually and continue our very important work. If this were even less than a decade ago, most of us would not be on the internet and Zoom very probably wouldn’t have been written yet. I’m sure we would feel a whole lot more isolated than we are today! So, fellow Kiwanians, let’s all take heart and lead the way out of this by thinking ‘out of the box’ to develop new ways of meeting and serving. It’s truly a memorable year and one none of us will forget!

Before I finish this, I really must give a shout-out praising the talent of our District staff, especially in the technological area, and the huge learning curve they and all of us have been on to make these events run so seamlessly and professionally. Ed and Gary have definitely been the glue holding us together and leading the way through the myriad details of producing all of our virtual events. To my knowledge, there are no other Districts so far that are planning to produce a full virtual convention. Most of them are simply cancelling and holding a short District Council type of Zoom meeting or including a few video webinars. I am positive you will be very impressed with the upcoming events, so be sure to join in! Continued on page 6...

Wow! The time sure passes quickly, even in “lockdown.” There have been so many things happening; keeping my attention, that spring passed me by. By now, I have been to the lake several times, but this year, nothing so far.

So, Lt. Governor Training is behind us, and it was interesting, to say the least. This was the inaugural event from the Studio PNW, and there were challenges, but overall I think it was good. We livestreamed three of the sessions on You Tube, and hosted the board meeting on Zoom. The 2020-2021 Lt. Governor team met officially for the first time, and I truly believe we have a great start to the next Kiwanis year. Feedback so far, has been positive for the most part. A couple of comments I have received indicate some improvements are needed, and those are in the works. One of the positive, inspiring outcomes of our board meeting was the Lt. Governor team selecting their team name. I kept track of suggestions, but was not allowed to vote, which is as

it should be. Their selection and unanimous vote moved me beyond belief. Their choice? Team Phoenix. The bird that rises from the ashes of the pandemic, and overcomes. You will be interested in knowing who was selected as Class President, too. Ken Smith, Lt. Governor of Division 17 will serve in that position in 2020-2021. Huge congratulations to Ken.

One of the requests I received was to review my goals for 2020-2021. As you might imagine, having handouts for a virtual meeting proves to be difficult. In keeping that train of thought, I believe it is appropriate to publish my goals in this article. Those goals are:

Club Building: Art Riley, our International President in 2020-2021, and I agreed to build 8-10 new clubs in 2020-2021. I think that is a serious challenge during the unprecedented, and unexpected, circumstances we are under, but if anyone can make that happen, it would be our outstanding membership team. There will be a follow-up Lt. Governor training on Zoom, and the membership team will be presenting their plans and direction.

Club Strengthening: I have been asked to add 5% to our membership. That equates to 365 new members. I don’t think that is an insurmountable goal. We can do that. If our club membership chairs accept the challenge before them, 365 can be done. Just adding new clubs can account for a major portion of that number. However, there is another aspect that we, as Kiwanis club members, can aspire to change, and that is membership loss. Our district, over the past 4 years, has averaged a loss of 324 members. Even accounting for those members who have passed away, moved out of the club area, or just aged out, that is a horrendous number. If each of us were to just take a little time to talk to our other members, engage them in projects, invite them to sit with you, or make them a friend, it could make a significant difference in our losses. I challenge each of you to reduce those numbers by 25%. That only equates to only 81 members in the entire district.

Club Signature Projects: Each club in the district is asked to participate in the Signature Project Program. Give your clubs an opportunity to brag a little, show your pride in your community, and in the service you provide. In the 2018-2019 year, several clubs stepped up to accept the challenge, and two even were submitted to Kiwanis Int’l., with one making the finals. Imagine the possibilities if every club submitted a signature project and the PNW District could shout to the world about the service we provide our communities, and to our children.

District and Division Service Leadership Partners: Strengthen the Family is a phrase you will hear from me a lot during our year. The families I refer to are our SLPs. The K-Kids, Builders Clubs, Key Clubs, CKI, and Aktion Clubs. They are members of our Kiwanis Family, too. An important part. The funds we provide for their charters expenses, district conventions, and more, are just seed money to grow our future leaders. I strongly support these young folks who have the heart to serve, and find the courage to engage. I urge, and challenge, each club to investigate the possibility of starting one of these Kiwanis-branded programs, and for each division to actually charter a new SLP.

Financial Giving: Each of our clubs in encouraged continuing the generous donations thus far achieved, including the Eliminate Project. An increase would be outstanding, but could prove challenging under our current conditions. However, don’t let that stop you from trying. There are so many ways to support our district projects, too. Whether it is buying

Mustang tickets to support KDCCP, donating to KCCP, SIGN, SOS, or any one of our other worthwhile projects.

Service to Children: Each club is challenged to perform a Community Needs Assessment, and look to start a new project to serve the children of their community. You can look at old, retired projects that might be approached in new, innovative ways that would revitalize that project. I also know that several cities and towns have more than one Kiwanis club. I find great value in creating joint projects. After all, this isn’t about the clubs as much as serving the children. There is strength in numbers, and creating a joint project that ultimately serves the children just brings more minds, more heart, and perhaps fresh ideas to the table.

Service Hours: An increase in service hours can easily be part of our membership growth plan. Adding one member can add service hours. Adding one project can add service hours. Adding a club to a division can add service hours exponentially. As a club member, we can all add service hours just by taking on one more project, one more task, or stepping up to be an officer or chair. I challenge everyone to grow your service hours by 10%.

Club Education: Our district has been challenged to find new and innovative ways to educate our club leadership. Since we have experienced this pandemic, new and innovative has been the normal, instead of the goal. Our current Governor, Melanie Bozak has worked up a plan for a new education opportunity for everyone, not just officers. The Club Excellence Conversations, happening over 4 Saturdays in July, and available to all, is just that chance. The Club Leadership Education devised and offered by Kiwanis International, is a great, innovative training available to officers, those thinking of becoming an officer, or just want to know the process.

So, those are my goals. Some are challenging, all are achievable, but we all need to take part to make them a reality.

Thank you,

Lonnie Johnson Governor-Elect 2019-2020 [email protected]

“Governor’s Message continued from page 4... One of the hardest things about this whole Covid pandemic is not being able to travel and visit our members. I truly love attending club events and new club charter celebrations around the District, as well as visiting clubs to help with service and fundraising projects. While the quarantine has certainly helped my budget, I definitely look forward to travel opportunities to end my term as your Governor so please let me know what’s going on in your clubs. Using the Zoom platform has been nice, but in-person is so much nicer.

Thanks so very much for your support and ongoing engagement in our incredible organization…and, remember, always be KIWANIS PROUD!!

Some are going stir crazy as they follow quarantine suggestions, while others work their tails off taking care of essential business. What does it mean to our communities here in the Pacific Northwest?

Many of our members have gotten out of the habit of meeting, many are wondering if Kiwanis is worth time and money because they haven’t seen the results of their normal work in months. Nothing abnormal about those members, in fact, every civic organization is facing the same challenges.

Remember, those of your members that enjoyed the social aspect of your meetings are missing that. Make sure that you celebrate your first few meetings by making every member feel that you are glad that they made it to that meeting. Of course, you want them to know that you take their

health seriously, but you do not want them to think you’re afraid of them.

For those members who aren’t into meetings, this is your opportunity to upgrade your meetings. If your meeting is often missing one of the elements of a great meeting (organized, civil, effective, productive, and enjoyable) this is a time to make sure that every member gets to experience a great meeting. Use an agenda that you share prior to the meeting, do your business with confidence and have something to show for the time at the end of it. And especially in these troubled times, avoid arguments and be very polite.

Make your club meeting something that every member wants to attend to participate in. It is really no different that the adapting your District has had to do to continue functioning. We have become fluent at Zoom and Go-To-Meeting. We’ve learned about recording videos and livestreaming. Each day we improve our skills and become better at communicating with our members who can’t attend our normal events.

Don’t apologize for not meeting, just accept it and make your club experience better and stronger for your members. Just as Kiwanis makes the future brighter by serving the children, you make your community better by welcoming your members back as the lockdowns are relaxed by our governments.

This is a year of firsts for everyone. If you want to know what District Convention (DCON) and Club Excellence Conversations (CEC) will look like, go to YouTube.com and search for the PNW Kiwanis TV channel and look at what we produced for Lt. Governor Training. Remember that was our first attempt and we are learning from each effort we make. It will be worth your members’ time to participate in the CECs and the plans for the very first virtual DCON assure me that this will be a can’t miss event for both experienced convention goers and first timers.

It’s time to begin returning to normal, it may take a while, but one step at a time we will continue to serve the children of the world, as we’ve done for over a century.

The 2020 Pacific Northwest District Convention (DCON) will be the first convention where you don’t have to drive to an exotic location (Kennewick) and book a hotel as the lockdown has given Kiwanis the opportunity to rethink and “Imagine” how to hold our annual convention. The Convention will be held August 21 through 23 in the comfort of your own home.

The convention will be held via a variety of platforms. YouTube.com will host the livestream on the “PNW Kiwanis TV” channel so you can watch it with your smart TV or plug your computer into an HDMI port and display in on your TV. You can watch it on your computer or even take us on the road and watch on your smartphone. Zoom is the program that hosts most of our meetings and is easy to use. To get your invitation, the week before our DCON, request a meeting invite if you didn’t get one.

Registration is now live and can be found on the district website. The theme of this convention is Imagine and will look familiar to regular convention goers but have many new and exciting elements. Start by registering for only $25 and know that anyone registering prior to August 1 will receive a convention in a box mailed to their address to involve them in the convention in a very real way. As an additional incentive, the first 300 to register will receive a unique convention pin to commemorate this first of its kind DCON.

Elements of DCON will take place on Friday or earlier. The Finance Committee, the Past Governors group, the Bigfoot Brigade, and the PNW Foundation will all hold Zoom meetings to take care of the business that each respective group has.

The first official activity will be the Joint 2019-21 & 2020-21 Board Meeting which is scheduled for 2:00pm to 5:00pm or when finished on Zoom.

The opening Session of the PNW District Convention will start at 6:30 pm and last an hour and half until 8:00pm. This opening session will be livestreamed on YouTube.com. You’ll be welcomed by Governor Melanie Bozak and then the evening will feature Joey the Magician providing a great evening of entertainment.

Following the session those who desire to socialize will have the opportunity from 8:00pm to 9:30pm

Saturday will begin with an hour and a half learning track livestream at 10:00am consisting of 3 half hour sessions. A second session will be held starting at 1:00pm. The third session will begin at 4:00pm.

There will be an Outreach & Honors reception from 6:00pm to 6:30pm via Zoom, and also a social and game night is being planned from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.

Sunday will begin at 10:00am with a livestreamed memorial service and followed by the Premier Awards that recognize the outstanding individuals from the 2018-2019 administrative year of Jerry Deas.

At 1:00pm the business session of the House of Delegates will be convened for an hour and the election of the 2020-2021 Governor and Governor-Elect will be held as well voting on our amendment to implement the family membership program. The delegates from each club will be instructed how we are going to vote electronically prior to the convention.

The closing session of the virtual DCON will begin at 3:00pm and feature Joey the Magician performing a second, very different show. The installation of your district officers will wrap up the afternoon.

The District is committed to putting on a quality convention that respects your time and gives value to each member in these difficult times. This DCON will be different but one that makes you proud to be a Kiwanian.

Don’t miss this opportunity to attend!

Club Excellence Conversations2020 has turned out to be a very different year than expected. Last October the leadership of the Pacific Northwest District (PNW) decided to move in a new direction with Club Leadership Education. Instead of focusing on the specific duties of an officer, we were going to put the focus on the club growing and improving as a whole. Thus, the Club Excellence Retreat concept came into being.

Then Covid-19 arrived on the West Coast from China and our ability to meet face to face diminished dramatically. The PNW leadership adapted and changed the Retreat to an on-line conversation.

The Club Excellence Conversations for 2020 will be livestreamed on YouTube.com on the PNW’s very own channel “PNW Kiwanis TV” on July 11, 18, 25, and August 1. This means no registration, no fees, no travel, just you getting comfortable and logging on with your computer, Smart TV or any other device with a YouTube app. Each session will begin at 10:00 A.M. and run for three hours until 1:00 P.M.

The session will be divided into three sections which will be of value to every member of your club. The first section will be on teambuilding to strengthen your club. The second will be focused on giving you ideas of how to use the different personalities of your club members to build your club. The third will wrap up the day with a discussion on increasing your club’s membership and closing the back door to keep your members engaged and active.

Other resources, topics and tidbits will be shared throughout the three-hour conversation. Each of the sessions will be focused on a different area, but you may sit in on any or all of them. They will be jam packed with information and fun.

July 11 – Will be focused on Divisions AYN, AYS, 5, 9, 13, 17, 18, 20, 20M and 22.

July 18 – Focuses on Divisions 26, 28, 30, 32, 33, 34, and 38.

July 25 – Will welcome Divisions 46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56 and 80.

August 1 – Completes the tour with Divisions 42, 44, 63, 66, 68, 70, 72, 74, 76, 78 and 82.

Take a few minutes and go to YouTube.com, search for the PNW Kiwanis TV channel and click on the subscribe button. Then click the notifications bell and it will be easy for you to find the sessions when they go live.

Don’t surrender your voice at DCON.

VOTE!Each club is entitled to three (3) delegates (per Article VI, section 6 of the Bylaws) and all officers, Past Lt. Governors, and Past Governors are entitled to be delegates at large (per Article VI, section 8). Delegates must have paid their convention registration fee (per Article VI, section 9).

This is the official notice that the Pacific Northwest District Convention (DCON) will take place in the scheduled time frame and virtually (livestreamed on YouTube.com and on Zoom.us) instead of in person.

Register now for DCON and make sure that your club is represented. Go to https://kiwanispnw.org/district-convention.html to register on-line only for $25 and reserve your convention in a box.

Elect a new Governor, and choose between two candidates for Governor-Elect for 2020-2021. We also will be voting on submitting the Family Membership Amendment to Kiwanis International at their 2021 Convention in Salt Lake City.

The cost of being a delegate will never be less expensive than this year. Make sure your club is represented!

The 2020 Online Lt. Governor TrainingFor the very first time, the Governor-Elect was unable to bring the Lt. Governors for the upcoming year together for training in person and we had an alternative. The conference room at the office was converted to a studio.

The training was distilled down to what Lonnie Johnson thought was the most important things that the in-coming Lt. Governors needed to know. The training was divided into three livestreamed sessions and one zoom meeting. Each session was a combination of pre-recorded video and live sessions so that we could keep the number of people to a manageable and safe number.

The first session on Friday evening featured Governor-Elect Lonnie sharing his expectations and goals with several other topics presented by a variety of voices. The session only took one hour to cover 7 separate topics.

The second session on Saturday morning was designed to educate the class on closing the back door to retain our membership. This was done by Jackie Sue McFarlin in an outstanding fashion. A short section of Governance and what the office offers in help was included. Once again the session moved quickly and lasted only an hour.

Saturday’s next session was focused on utilizing the past Lt. Governor groups to benefit the individual Division. Succession planning and developing new leaders were a part of the discussion. The relationship between the levels of Kiwanis was presented as well as the changes in financial assistance that is available. The third session was also approximately an hour long.

The Saturday evening session was held via Zoom and this year’s International Trustee/Counselor Katrina Baranko spoke to the group. The team selected a team name (Team Phoenix) that showed their optimism for Kiwanis in recovering from the virus lockdown. The Team elected Ken Smith as their class president. And they held their first Board meeting.

If you want to see how the training was done, go to YouTube.com and search for the “PNW Kiwanis TV” channel and you can see the first three sessions that were livestreamed.

July 11, 18, 25 and August 1 from 10am to 1pm each of the four days will be the Club Excellence Conversations (CECs) and they will be livestreamed in a similar fashion. We are planning to continually improve and provide our members with the best experience that we can.

In the Kiwanis world, the PNW District has been a leader in the past and we continue that heritage today and into the future.

RECOGNITION The strength and stability of any great organization is because we recognize the caring and supporting members. The PNW Kiwanis Foundation offers a number of ways to honor clubs, Kiwanians, and community members. The funds raised are used to fund the scholarship and grant program. Giving is a personal matter – each according to their ability. No gift is to small or too large. The pride in participation in a lasting legacy for children and youth is what is important. What a great feeling when you have the opportunity to honor a Kiwanian, a friend, or community person who has donated their time through work and support of their community and youth. Please consider honoring someone with one of the following awards: Distinguished Service Award (DSA)- $100 min. A most fitting way to honor one of your own or a community member for outstanding service to Kiwanis or the community is to make a contribution of $100 or more that will help support children and youth in the Pacific Northwest through the work of this Foundation. The Distinguished Service Award is a rare honor, so ideally the presentation of the DSA should be made at a Lt. Governor’s official visit to your Kiwanis club where they can make it special and personal to the recipient. See: http://www.pnwkiwanisfoundation.org/support/service-awards. Fellowship Program (FP): Joan B. “Rusty” Clutts Fellowship, $1,000 min. and J. N. Emerson Diamond Fellowship, $2,000 min. Fellowships appropriately honor individuals who have dedicated themselves to the principle of service to others. A Kiwanian will often secure his or her own fellowship, but sometimes clubs will make a contribution to our Foundation to honor a member such as a Club President or Member of the Year. Many distinguished Kiwanis members in our PNW District have become Foundation Fellows. Fellowships are recognized with a medallion on a lanyard, as well as a lapel pin often awarded at a DCON reception or special club event. See: http://www.pnwkiwanisfoundation.org/support/fellowships. Memorial Gift Plaque (MGP): $100 min. It is fitting that a Kiwanian’s passing be recognized through a donation to an organization such as our Pacific Northwest Kiwanis Foundation. Just as the member supported Kiwanis, the Foundation will use your donations to continue to support Kiwanis sponsored and Kiwanis-linked programs for children. Pass the torch to this Foundation and the light will continue to shine. The Foundation will provide a plaque to the member’s family or to a place of honor for mounting. See: http://www.pnwkiwanisfoundation.org/support/memorials. Outstanding Community Partner (OCP): $100 min. Recognize a business or organization that has strong ties or support to your Kiwanis Club or Club Foundation with an Outstanding Community Partner contribution in their name. Relationships are valued and can be honored in this way to both help continue the partnership and help achieve our Foundation’s mission. Write your check now payable to the “Pacific Northwest Kiwanis Foundation”. Mail the check to: PNW Kiwanis Foundation, 5427 Glen Echo Av., Gladstone, OR 97027 Find information about the PNWKF at http://www.pnwkiwanisfoundation.org.

The Kiwanis Club of Oak Bay - A Club Worth Belongning ToTThe Kiwanis Club of Oak Bay continues to provide service to our community in this time of unprecedented uncertainly. Not only have we opened our little blue “tea room” at Willows Beach in Oak Bay (following all Government required standards) to serve the community and raise funds for our project account, when we were informed at a senior resident in one of care homes was in need of assistance, the club jumped in.

The Club was informed by the resident manager that one of the residents required a motorized scooter to be able to shop and be independent. As shown in the photo, the only location to store securely the required scooter was a small outside storage room. This location made it extremely difficult for the resident to access her scooter, therefore as her family said “Mom doesn’t go out that much”.

The club quickly approved the funding to construct and build the storage shed as shown in the picture attached. The shed was built on a solid wooden deck (made from pressure treated wood), recessed into the ground so that the resident could just drive straight in without a lip.

Power was supplied to the shed via underground conduit to keep the scooter charged. As shown in the attached photo, Ann was very pleased with her new home for the scooter.

The shed was built with the future in mind as our residents age, it will allow mobility for more residents as up to three scooters will easily fit into the new “Ann’s scooter shed”.

-Janice Burns, Secretary Kiwanis Club of Oak Bay

Ann, who has the scooter in the old shed. The group photo consists of Club President Gerry Adam, 2nd. from the right, and the others Ron, Ann (again) with Jim and Kent who are residents and assisted in the building. Gerry was ‘foreman’.

ANNUAL CLUB GIFT Has your Kiwanis Club ever donated to the PNW Kiwanis Foundation? In some Divisions, every club has for many years; while others may have never. By October 15th clubs were to have approved their annual budget; so, did your club have a line item for our foundation? In November, clubs were to pay their invoiced annual dues for which the first quarter is also a good time to make your annual club donation to the PNW Kiwanis Foundation.

Contributions to the Annual Club Gift Campaign at any giving level are appreciated and help make a difference. The suggested giving level of $5.00 or more per member is recommended to help the Foundation meet the purposes for which it was chartered. A lump sum amount of any size works, too. If every Pacific Northwest District Kiwanis Club was to contribute on an annual basis, the PNW Kiwanis Foundation would be able to not only continue and expand its current service but also ensure a legacy of support to children and youth for years to come.

An annual club gift is remembered. When Grants are awarded for Club Projects, they are reviewed on at least these four criteria:

1. Those clubs who apply on time. 2. Those clubs who have their own skin in the game. 3. Those clubs who contributed to the PNWKF in the past and show a current need. 4. Those clubs who line up community partners.

Your contribution helps other clubs achieve a project that needs a boost, that provides scholarships, and funds CKI and Key Club Outreach. Please help us out! Write your check now payable to the “Pacific Northwest Kiwanis Foundation”.

Mail the check to: PNW Kiwanis Foundation, 5427 Glen Echo Av., Gladstone, OR 97027
