2013 NORTH GEORGIA SEASON PREVIEW The University of North Georgia softball team enters the program’s 17th season of existence with a preseason ranking of 12th by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). The Saints were also tabbed to win the Peach Belt Conference regular season title for the fifth straight season. The Saints’ softball program has become one of the most consistent as they have been ranked in the top-10 at the end of the season four years in a row, including No. 1 for the entire regular season of 2010. The Saints have also made five straight trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament in-cluding three World Series appearances in their amazing stretch from 2009-11. After winning three Peach Belt regular season and tournament titles and earning three straight trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament from 2009-11, the Saints will look to once again advance into post season play in 2013 after closing out the 2012 season in the NCAA Super Regional. After finishing the 2012 season ranked 10th nationally with an overall record of 49-10, North Georgia will look to showcase a roster that returns four starting infielders, two starting outfielders and two pitchers from last season. “We are very excited to get the 2013 season underway as we have another very competitive team and a schedule that will hopefully prepare us for the Peach Belt Conference and postseason play,” Davenport stated. “We graduated some great players from last season that won over 200 games in their four-year career, so they will be greatly missed, but we are excited to see how our returning players have continued to improve since last season including the addition of the new players to our program.” The good news for the Saints is that they return plenty of experience in nearly every aspect of the game; four returning infielders, three players with extensive experience in the outfield and two veterans in the circle.

Infield Despite losing catcher Hilary Cox to graduation, Davenport will have

plenty of veteran experience on defense as he returns Katherine Martin and Karlie Gillam on the corners as well as middle infielders Sarah Johnson and Tiffanie Burns.

“We will have four returning infielders from last season and all have the ability to show great leadership in our program,” stated Davenport “Katherine has been the heartbeat of our defense for the past four seasons and leads by example and determination so we will count on her to con-tinue that role.”

Martin led the team last season with 351 putouts in 53 games that she played in. The senior has also proven to be highly reliable at the plate as she batted .289 which included 35 runs batted in a season ago. Opposite her on the field, Gillam led the team with 120 assists and returns the most consistent bat for the Saints as she led the team last year with a .329 bat-ting average and 14 doubles.

Up the middle, Johnson and Burns combined for 162 putouts and 175 assists on defense. On offense, Johnson led the team with 39 runs scored in 2012 while Burns led the team with nine home runs and was third on the squad with 33 RBI.

As for the Saints’ backstop, Davenport has four players who could work to fill Cox’s shoes including returner Katie Block who played in 41 games last season. The other three are sophomore transfer Kim McMillan and freshmen Amanda Hawkins and Makenzie Day, all three of which could step in at any time for the Saints when called upon.

Outfield In the outfield, it is a similar story as North Georgia has three play-

ers who have seen action over the past few seasons despite losing center

Above: Senior first baseman Katherine Martin has served as the anchor for the Saints’ defense the past three years and will be relied on to con-tinue that role this year.

Above: Senior third baseman Karlie Gillam led the team at the plate in 2012 with a .329 batting average and 14 doubles. She also led the team with 120 assists.

fielder Pilar Harden to graduation. “We will return at least three outfielders that have started a number of games in their careers here at North Georgia,” Davenport said. “Our out-fielders, while all competing for positions, are a group that works extremely hard making each other better. We feel very confident in a number of players that we can put in the outfield and like most positions, it will come down to who is swinging the bat well at a given point of the season.” Those hard working players include senior Kayla Minger and sopho-more Rochelle Shuman both of who saw action in at least 52 games last season for the Saints. Like their counterparts in the infield, Minger and Shu-man also return consistent bats on offense. Minger batted .308 a season ago while Shuman led the team with eight stolen bases.

Pitchers North Georgia’s strong suit the past few years has certainly been the pitching as Davenport’s program produced two NCAA Division II Na-tional Pitchers of the Year in Jessica Coan (2011) and Sarah Phillips (2010). Once again, there is plenty of potential to continue that trend this year’s pitching corps that includes 2012 Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year Melissa Dickie. “While graduating two All-Americans over the past two seasons we are very excited about these three pitchers continuing in the ability to keep our program successful each year,” stated Davenport. “This season’s pitch-ers all bring a little something different to the circle and have been suc-cessful in the past; we want them to continue to be the pitchers they have been to this point.” Dickie and senior Krysten Connelly highlight the pitching corps for the Saints and combined to record a 24-2 record last season. Dickie led the team’s trio of pitchers in 2012 with a 1.15 earned run average in 145.2 innings of work and struck out 109 batters while Connelly finished the year with a 2.08 ERA in 30.1 innings of work. Added to the fold will be freshman Courtney Poole out of Oconee County High School who could transition into the same role Dickie had last year of getting called on early as a freshman. North Georgia will waste no time jumping into their tough schedule as the Saints will play five early season tournaments including opening the schedule in Columbus, Ga. at the PBC-Sunshine State Classic the first weekend of February. Of the Saints’ 51 regular season games, 22 will be at home inside Haines & Carolyn Hill Softball Stadium. “We have another great schedule with many great Southeast Region teams in hopes of preparation for post season play,” Davenport stated. “We are excited to be playing in five great tournaments that should test our team early in the season against some very quality opponents. And again, each and every double header in the Peach Belt is always extremely competitive and this season looks to be the same.”

Above: Sophomore pitcher Melissa Dickie stepped up big as a true freshman in 2012 as she led the Saints’ three pitchers with a 1.15 ERA and finished the season with a 21-1 record en route to being named the PBC Freshman of the Year.

Entering its 23rd year of existence in 2012-13, the Peach Belt Conference has cemented its status as one of the elite Division II conferences in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach Belt has developed a consistent history of excellence which continues to this day with 32 national championships and 28 national finalists. Starting with only two championships in 1991, men’s and women’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 15 championship sports with the addition of men’s and women’s track and field in the spring of 2013. The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division IIconference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and begin

play in fall 1990. The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf championships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander men’s tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight straight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA men’s golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06. The PBC in in the midst of another dynasty as the Armstrong men’s and women’s tennis teams captured the 31st and 32nd national championships for the conference last year. The Pirates have won four women’s and three men’s national championships since 2008. Armstrong’s achievement was the highlight to one of the most successful seasons in league history. Peach Belt teams advanced to the national championship round of competition in 10 of our 13 sports. The Armstrong women’s soccer team reached the final four while the Flagler volleyball team went to the Elite Eight. The Montevallo men’s basketball team played in the national champion-ship game while the Lander women’s team reached the Elite Eight. The Flagler softball team reached the world series while the Georgia College and USC Aiken men’s golf teams reached the final eight match play at the national championships. In all, 59 Peach Belt teams made appearances in the NCAA postseason, including seven men’s tennis teams and six each in the sports of men’s golf and women’s tennis. The seven charter members of the conference were Armstrong Atlantic State University, Co-lumbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University, Lander Univer-sity, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000. Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton StateUniversity on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 2005, USC Upstate did the same in 2007, and the conference welcomed in North Georgia College & State University in 2005 and Georgia Southwestern State University in 2006. In 2009-10, the Peach Belt added Montevallo and Flagler. For the 2012-13 season, the league is expanding once again with the addition of Young Harris College, giving the Peach Belt 14 members for the first time in its history. David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBCcommissioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged with continuing the strong growth of the conference as its second era begins. Dr. Fred Carter, president of Francis Marion University, begins his two-year term as president of the Peach Belt this year. The conference currently holds championships in 15 sports, seven for men and eight for women. They are men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s track and field.

The North Georgia softball team made their inaugural trip to the College World Series in 2004, traveling to Decatur, Ala-bama, and matching up with powerhouse Point Loma Nazarene in the opening round. Although the Saints suffered a 21-1 loss in their first game on the nation-al stage, the squad rebounded the follow-ing day before falling 6-3 to Rio Grande (OH) to end their National Champion-ships hopes.

Although a National Title was not to be had, North Georgia garnered plenty of hardware in 2004, winning the Geor-gia Alabama Carolina Conference, the GACC Tournament Championship on their way to the program’s first-ever trip to the National Tournament.

2004

Page 28: 2013 North Georgia Softball Media Guide

Making their second straight trip to the National Championships, North Geor-gia had revenge on their mind after a 10-inning 1-0 heart breaker to Cal Baptist dropped the Saints to the loser’s bracket. Following an 8-0 victory over the Uni-versity of Mary, head coach Mike Daven-port’s crew was determined to have the last say against Point Loma Nazarene af-ter a 20-run loss the previous year. The Saints did just that, emerging in the 10th inning with a walk-off 3-2 victory, propel-ling North Georgia to two more victo-ries before running into Simon Frasier and Mobile College in the semifinals. 2005 was a farewell tour for the Saints who captured their fourth straight regu-lar season Conference Championship on their way out of the NAIA ranks, prepar-ing for a future in the NCAA.

2005

Entering the Division II College World Series as the No. 1 team in the coun-try, the 2009 North Georgia softball team used late comebacks and big innings to continue one of the most impressive runs in the nation. Heading to Salem, Virginia, with a 48-3 record, the Saints opened the week with one of the most exciting wins in school history against Dixie State, using a game-tying three-run homer with two outs in the seventh to force extra-innings, before a walk-off home run in the 10th sealed the victory.

An equally epic matchup with Angelo State followed as an 11-inning dual ended with a walk-off single by North Georgia to send the Saints to the semifinals of the World Series. Lock Haven awaited in the semifinals with a birth in the National Title game on the line, but back-to-back wins by the Lady Eagles pro-pelled LHU to a World Series Championship.

2009

Page 30: 2013 North Georgia Softball Media Guide

One of the most storied seasons in the history of NCAA softball followed North Georgia to their second straight trip to the Division II World Series as the Saints entered the National Championships with a 50-0 record. The second longest win-ning streak in NCAA softball history was put to the test in the opening game of the World Series, but the Saints did what they had all season long, recording their 24th shutout of the year in a 4-0 victory over Molloy College.

The nation’s No. 1 team for 11 straight weeks would then run into two of the most powerful offenses in the country as Valdosta State and Metro State defeated the Saints in back-to-back games, putting an end to a season that captured the attention of sports fans around the country. The 51-2 mark gave the Saints the best winning percentage in the nation for back-to-back seasons.

2010

Page 31: 2013 North Georgia Softball Media Guide

North Georgia was back at it again for a third straight year. The Saints were looking to bounce back after exiting the College World Series earlier than expected a year ago. Heading back to Salem, Virginia, North Georgia was about to witness history repeating itself.

After winning their opening game against Indiana of Pennsylvania, the Saints ran into the powers that were Alabama-Huntsville, a team that defeated them twice during the regular season, and Saginaw Valley.

The Saints have established themselves as one of the premier softball programs at the Division II level. Making three straight World Series appearances along with three consecutive conference championships has cemented them as one of the best in the land. In this unprecedented three-year stretch, North Georgia has won 154 games while only losing 19, an astonishing record.

2011

Mike Davenport is in his 13th season as head coach of the Saints Softball Program. He has been a familiar name to the North Georgia fam-ily where he is in his 16th year with the athletic department.

Under Davenport’s guidance, the softball pro-gram attributes much of its success to building a strong team atmosphere opening each school year with “RBI WEEK”, (Respect-Balance-Intensity). Team members come together and participate in team building exercises as well as a pre-season conditioning program. The squad is challenged mentally and physically as it finishes the week at the Pine Valley Ropes Course traversing both low and high elements. “RBI WEEK” has allowed the team to build each other’s trust and respect before entering each school year.

In his 12 years as head coach, Davenport has accumulated an overall record of 514-159. That re-cord includes seven conference titles, six confer-ence tournament crowns, three region champion-ships and five world series trips.

In 2012, Davenport recorded his 500th career win with a PBC doubleheader sweep of Georgia College on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 and guided the Saints to their fourth-straight NCAA Divi-sion II tournament appearance. North Georgia continued its show of dominance with a pair of 15-game winning streaks. Davenport’s squad earned a berth in the Southeast Regional and had a late-game rally against Flagler College fall just short in the Saints’ bid for a fourth-straight South-east Region title, but the Saints were still able to

finish the season ranked 10th in the nation. It was the fourth-straight year North Georgia has finished ranked in the top-10 in Division II and the fifth time in a row the Saints finished inside the top 12.

The 2011 season continued a dynasty, as the Saints captured their third consecutive Peach Belt Conference regular season and tournament championships, and ad-vanced to the Division II World Series for a third-straight year. Finishing the year as the No. 4 team in the land, the Saints were ranked in the nation’s top five for an unprecidented 30 straight weeks dating back to the 2009 season.

The 2010 season was a record breaking campaign as the squad put together 51 consecutive wins, the second longest winning streak in NCAA history, and made its second consecutive appearance at the Division II College World Series. Follow-ing back-to-back Peach Belt Conference regular season and tournament titles, the Saints clinched the Southeast Super Regional in Dahlonega and finished the year with a national ranking of No. 5 after being the nation’s top team for all 12 weeks of the regular season. Davenport picked up his 400th career victory with a double-

header sweep at GCSU on April 10, 2010.

In 2009, Mike Davenport and the Saints posted a record of 50-5 on their way to the first of three-straight Peach Belt Conference Regular Season Championships, PBC Tournament Championships and NCAA Southeast Regional Championships to advance to their first-ever Divi-sion II College World Series. North Georgia spent all 12 weeks in the NFCA Division II Top-25, starting the year as the No. 11 team in the country, before moving up to No. 9 by week two, and rounding out the top-five by the third week. The Saints then spent the rest of the year in the nation’s top-five before grabbing the program’s first-ever No. 1 ranking on May 6, 2009 in the final regular season poll of the year. The Saints finished the season third in the country in the final poll of year.

In 2008, Davenport led his team to a 38-15 record, a third place regular season finish in the PBC, a runner-up finished in the Peach Belt Con-ference tournament, a runner-up finish in the NCAA South Atlantic Regional, and a final NCAA Division II ranking of 12. During the 2008 season, Davenport also picked up his 300th career win with a 3-2 extra-inning victory over Lander University on April 2.

Davenport led the North Georgia Softball Program to a 36-19 record overall and a 12-8 mark in the Peach Belt Conference during the 2007 season. During the 2005 season, he led the Saints to the Southern States Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship and the SSAC Tournament Championship. This marked the Saints fourth consecutive Conference Championship in a row and the program’s third consecutive Tournament Championship. He led the 2005 Saints to the program’s second consecutive National Tournament in Decatur, Ala. where North Georgia finished its membership in the NAIA with the Saints moving through the first round of the tournament with wins over the University of Mary, Point Loma University, and Aquinas Col-lege. The Saints advanced all the way to the quarterfinals with a first round win over Houston Baptist. North Georgia finished the season fifth in the NAIA National Tournament – the highest finish of any North Georgia athletic program since 1987.

Davenport began his career at North Georgia with the women’s basketball team in 1996 as Assistant Coach and served in that role until 2000 when he took over the roll as Head Softball Coach in August. He served in that role as well as instructor in the Health-Physical Education Department since. During his time with the North Georgia women’s basketball team, he helped guide the squad to three conference titles and three National Tournament (NAIA) appearances.

Davenport was born on December 23, 1968 in DuQuoin, Illinois. While growing up in central Illinois, he played basketball and base-ball at Peoria’s Richwoods High School before moving to Central Oklahoma and graduating from Guthrie High School (Guthrie, Oklahoma). After playing one year of junior college baseball, he focused his attention on coaching and joined the rich tradition of Cowboy Baseball at Oklahoma State University under head coach Gary Ward as a student-assistant. The opportunity to coach led him to Gainesville, Florida, where he spent three years as an as-sistant baseball coach at Santa Fe Community College under head coach Harry Tholen. Davenport received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Recreation from the University of Florida in 1994, and received his M.Ed. in Physical Education from NGCSU in 1998.

Davenport is married to the former Melanie Ralston (Gainesville, GA) and the couple resides in Dahlonega, GA. They are the proud parents of Margaret “Isabella” (10) and Michael “Harper” (7).

She was an integral part to the Gators’ success that included winning back-to-back SEC tournament champion-ships in 2008 and 2009 as well as the regular season crown in 2009. During her time, the Gators made three Women’s College World Series appearances that saw them finish third in 2008, second in 2009 and fifth in 2010.

During her sophomore campaign, she set a sophomore class record with 158 assists. The mark is also second all-time for assists in a single season.

She graduated in 2010 from Florida with a Bachelors of Sci-ence in Agriculture.

After playing two seasons for Mike Davenport and the University of North Georgia softball team, Jessica Coan will continue her softball career as a student assistant coach start-ing with the 2013 season.

Most recently, Coan traveled to Europe where she played professionally for the Mannheim Tornados, a baseball and softball club based in Mannheim, Germany.
