HOME OF THE SAINTS

Entering its 22nd year of existence in 2011-12, the Peach Belt Conference has become one of the elite Division II conferences in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach Belt has developed a con-sistent history of excellence which continues to this day with 30 national championships and 27 national finalists.

Starting with only two championships in 1991, in men’s and women’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 13 championship sports with the addition of women’s golf in the fall of 2009.

The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and begin play in fall 1990.

The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf championships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander men’s tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight straight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA men’s golf has won three straight na-tional titles from 2004-06 while AASU women’s tennis has captured four titles overall.

The 2010-11 season was one of the most memorable the league has ever had. Clayton State became the first PBC women’s basketball team to capture a national championship. The Columbus State men’s ten-nis team reached the national semifinals while the Clayton State and Armstrong Atlantic State women’s tennis teams also played in the national semifinals. The North Georgia softball team made an unprec-edented third straight appearance in the NCAA Women’s College World Series, while Columbus State’s Meshack Koyiaki registered a runner-up finish at the Men’s Cross Country National Championships. In all, 46 Peach Belt teams made appearances in the NCAA postseason, including seven men’s tennis teams and six each in the sports of men’s golf and women’s tennis.

The seven charter members of the conference were Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University, Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000.

Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton State University on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 2005, USC Upstate did the same in 2007, and the conference wel-comed in North Georgia College & State University in 2005 and Georgia Southwestern State University in 2006. In 2009-10, the Peach Belt expanded to 13 members, the most the league has ever had, with the additions of Montevallo and Flagler. The two schools also returned a league presence to Florida and broke new ground in Alabama.

David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBC commissioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged with continuing the strong growth of the conference as its second era begins.

Dr. Kendall Blanchard, president of Georgia Southwestern State University, began the second of his two-year term as the league president in July of 2011.

The conference currently holds championships in 13 sports, six for men and seven for women. They are men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and wom-en’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s golf.

The North Georgia softball team made their inaugural trip to the College World Series in 2004, traveling to Decatur, Ala-bama, and matching up with powerhouse Point Loma Nazarene in the opening round. Although the Saints suffered a 21-1 loss in their first game on the nation-al stage, the squad rebounded the follow-ing day before falling 6-3 to Rio Grande (OH) to end their National Champion-ships hopes.

Although a National Title was not to be had, North Georgia garnered plenty of hardware in 2004, winning the Geor-gia Alabama Carolina Conference, the GACC Tournament Championship on their way to the program’s first-ever trip to the National Tournament.

Page 20: 2012 North Georgia Softball Media Guide

Making their second straight trip to the National Championships, North Geor-gia had revenge on their mind after a 10-inning 1-0 heart breaker to Cal Baptist dropped the Saints to the loser’s bracket. Following an 8-0 victory over the Uni-versity of Mary, head coach Mike Daven-port’s crew was determined to have the last say against Point Loma Nazarene af-ter a 20-run loss the previous year. The Saints did just that, emerging in the 10th inning with a walk-off 3-2 victory, propel-ling North Georgia to two more victo-ries before running into Simon Frasier and Mobile College in the semifinals. 2005 was a farewell tour for the Saints who captured their fourth straight regu-lar season Conference Championship on their way out of the NAIA ranks, prepar-ing for a future in the NCAA.

Page 21: 2012 North Georgia Softball Media Guide

Entering the Division II College World Series as the No. 1 team in the coun-try, the 2009 North Georgia softball team used late comebacks and big innings to continue one of the most impressive runs in the nation. Heading to Salem, Virginia, with a 48-3 record, the Saints opened the week with one of the most exciting wins in school history against Dixie State, using a game-tying three-run homer with two outs in the seventh to force extra-innings, before a walk-off home run in the 10th sealed the victory.

An equally epic matchup with Angelo State followed as an 11-inning dual ended with a walk-off single by North Georgia to send the Saints to the semifinals of the World Series. Lock Haven awaited in the semifinals with a birth in the National Title game on the line, but back-to-back wins by the Lady Eagles pro-pelled LHU to a World Series Championship.

Page 22: 2012 North Georgia Softball Media Guide

One of the most storied seasons in the history of NCAA softball followed North Georgia to their second straight trip to the Division II World Series as the Saints entered the National Championships with a 50-0 record. The second longest win-ning streak in NCAA softball history was put to the test in the opening game of the World Series, but the Saints did what they had all season long, recording their 24th shutout of the year in a 4-0 victory over Molloy College.

The nation’s No. 1 team for 11 straight weeks would then run into two of the most powerful offenses in the country as Valdosta State and Metro State defeated the Saints in back-to-back games, putting an end to a season that captured the attention of sports fans around the country. The 51-2 mark gave the Saints the best winning percentage in the nation for back-to-back seasons.

Page 23: 2012 North Georgia Softball Media Guide

North Georgia was back at it again for a third straight year. The Saints were looking to bounce back after exiting the College World Series earlier than expected a year ago. Heading back to Salem, Virginia, North Georgia was about to witness history repeating itself.

After winning their opening game against Indiana of Pennsylvania, the Saints ran into the powers that were Alabama-Huntsville, a team that defeated them twice during the regular season, and Saginaw Valley.

The Saints have established themselves as one of the premier softball programs at the Division II level. Making three straight World Series appearances along with three consecutive conference championships has cemented them as one of the best in the land. In this unprecedented three-year stretch, North Georgia has won 154 games while only losing 19, an astonishing record.

IKEDAVENPORTMIKE-

Mike Davenport is in his 12th season as head coach of the Saints Softball Program in 2011-12. He has been a familiar name to the North Georgia family where he begins his 15th year in the athletic department.

In his 11 years as a head coach, Davenport has accumulated an overall record of 465-149.

The 2011 season continued a dynasty, as the Saints captured their third consecutive Peach Belt Conference regular season and tournament championships, and advanced to the Division II World Series for a third straight year. Finishing the year as the No. 4 team in the land, the Saints have now been ranked in the nation’s top five for an unprecidented 30 straight weeks dating back to the 2009 season.

The 2010 season proved to be a record breaking campaign as the squad put together 51 consecutive wins, the second longest winning streak in NCAA history and made their second consecutive appearance at the Division II College World Series. Following back-to-back Peach Belt Conference regular season and tournament titles, the Saints clinched the Southeast Super Regional in Dahlonega and finished the year with a national ranking of No. 5 after being the nation’s top team for all 12 weeks of the regular season. Davenport picked up his 400th career victory with a doubleheader sweep at GCSU on April 10, 2010.

In 2009, Mike Davenport enjoyed his most successful season in his coaching career, posting the school’s best record of 50-5 on their way to the the Peach Belt Conference Regular Season Championship, PBC Tournament Championship, NCAA Southeast Dahlonega Regional Championship, and the NCAA Southeast Super Regional Dahlonega Championship to advance to their first-ever Division II College World Series. North Georgia spent all 12 weeks in the NFCA Division II Top 25, starting the year as the #11 team in the country, before moving up to #9 by week two, and rounding out the top five by the third week. The Saints then spent the rest of the year in the nation’s top five before grabbing the program’s first-ever #1 ranking on May 6, 2009 in the final regular season poll of the year. The Saints finished the season at the #3 team in the country in the final poll of year.

In 2008, Davenport led his team to a 38-15 record, a third place regular season finish in the PBC, a runner-up finished in the Peach Belt Conference tournament, a runner-up finish in the NCAA South Atlantic Regional, and a final NCAA Division II ranking of 12. During the 2008 season, Davenport also picked up his 300th career win with a 3-2 extra-inning victory over Lander University on April 2.

Davenport began his career at NGCSU with the Lady Saints basketball team in 1996 as Assistant Coach and served in that role until 2000. He became the Head Softball Coach in August of 2000 and has served in that role as well as instructor in the Health-Physical Education Department. While at North Georgia, he has been part of seven conference titles and five National Tournament (NAIA) appearances. Davenport led the North Georgia Softball Program to a 36-19 record overall and a 12-8 mark in the Peach Belt Conference during the 2007 season. During the 2005 season, he led the Saints to the Southern States Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship and the SSAC Tournament Championship. This marked the Saints fourth consecutive Conference Championship in a row and the program’s third consecutive TournamentChampionship. He led the 2005 Saints to the program’s second consecutive National Tournament in Decatur, Ala. At the National Tournament, NGCSU finished its membership in the NAIA with the Saints moving through the first round of the tournament with wins over the University of Mary, Point Loma University, and Aquinas College. The Saints advanced all the way to the quarterfinals with a first round win over Houston Baptist. North Georgia finished the season fifth in the NAIA National Tournament – the highest finish of any NGCSU Athletic Program since 1987.

Under Davenport’s guidance, the softball program attributes much of its success to building a strong team atmosphere opening each school year with “RBI WEEK”, (Respect-Balance-Intensity). Team members come together and participate in teambuilding exercises as well as a pre-season conditioning program. Team members are challenged mentally and physically as they finish the week at the Pine Valley Ropes Course traversing both low and high elements. “RBI WEEK” has allowed the team to build each other’s trust and respect before entering each school year.

Davenport was born on December 23, 1968 in DuQuoin, Illinois. While growing up in central Illinois, he played basketball and base-ball at Peoria’s Richwoods High School before moving to Central Oklahoma and graduating from Guthrie high School (Guthrie, Oklahoma). After playing one year of junior college baseball, he focused his attention on coaching and joined the rich tradition of Cowboy Baseball at Oklahoma State University under head coach Gary Ward as a student-assistant. The opportunity to coach led him to Gainesville, Florida, where he spent three years as an assistant baseball coach at Santa Fe Community College under head coach Harry Tholen. Davenport received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Recreation from the University of Florida in 1994, and received his M.Ed. in Physical Education from NGCSU in 1998.

Davenport is married to the former Melanie Ralston (Gainesville, GA) and the couple resides in Dahlonega, GA. They are the proud parents of Margaret “Isabella” (9) and Michael “Harper” (6).
