The Panthers (14-8) picked up arguably the big- gest win in school history with a 5-1 win over No. 2 Alabama last season in Tuscaloosa. That was only the third loss to that point in the season for the Crimson Tide, who would go on to win the SEC and national championship. GSU was originally scheduled to play Jackson- ville State (16-10) on March 6, but the game was rescheduled due to severe weather in the Atlanta area. The two teams also had another matchup canceled earlier this season during the Phyllis Raf- ter Memorial Classic. The rivalry between the Panthers and the Game- cocks is one of the longest and most competitive in program history. Over 41 meetings all-time, Georgia State maintains a narrow 21-20 lead in the series. At the start of last season, GSU actually trailed 20-19 in the series against the Gamecocks, but won both sides of a doubleheader 4-2 and 5-3 in Jacksonville, Ala. Jacksonville State comes to Pan- thersville after sweeping a conference set against Tennessee State. Georgia State has played Alabama (26-3) a total of three times in the schools’ history, with the Pan- thers’ only win coming last season. The defending national champions won their first 22 games of the season and most recently swept an SEC series over South Carolina. Twelve days have elapsed since the Panthers’ last games when GSU swept a doubleheader against Eastern Illinois on March 7 in Panthersville. Georgia State won the first game 6-5 on a walk- off steal of home plate in the bottom of the 10th inning. GSU followed that up with a 4-3 victory in Game Two. The Panthers have been effective stealing the bases this season, swiping 41 bases in 46 attempts. Ashley Christy leads the team with 10 steals in as many tries. Eleven different student-athletes have successfully stolen a base for GSU. Home runs have also been a strength for Geor- gia State, offensively. GSU has belted 23 long balls already this season which ranks ninth most in the single-season record books. Pacing the team with eight homers, senior slugger Paige Nowacki needs only four more to tie the school career record of 32. Georgia State will open conference play this weekend, March 23-24 by hosting CAA foe George Mason in Panthersville with a doubleheader on Sat- urday and a single game on Sunday at noon. vs. Jacksonville State (16-10) March 19, 2013 • 5:00 p.m. Panthersville, Ga. established herself as one of the most prolific home run hitters in Panther softball history. Nowacki leads the team with eight homers on the season.

With 28 homers on her career, Nowacki now sits third on the all-time school homer list. The McDonough, Ga. native needs only five home runs to tie the school record of 32 set by former-teammate Lauren Jones in 2011.

Georgia State has hit 23 home runs as a team. That total is already the ninth most a team has hit in an entire season. Nine Panthers have hit homers this season.

baSe tHieveSThe Panthers are 41 of 46 in stolen bases

this season. Ashley Christy leads GSU with 10 steals, while Taylor Anderson and Jessica Clifton each have five. Eleven different Panthers have stolen a base.

With four stolen bases this season and 36 in her career, senior Whitney Phillips is currently sixth in program history.

The second baseman led the team last season with seven stolen bases and her 16 in 2011 rank 10th on GSU’s single-season steals list.

awardS watcHThe Panthers have earned three CAA weekly

honors to start the season. Taylor Anderson earned the Rookie of the

Week award after the USF Tournament. Paige Nowacki was named the conference Player of the Week after the Panther Invitational. Kaitlyn Medlam earned the nod as the Pitcher of the Week following the Phyllis Rafter Memorial.

Medlam and Nowacki are two of the most decorated student-athletes in program history. Medlam has earned a school-record five weekly conference honors during her career, while Nowacki has been awarded four.

HittinG StreakFreshman Taylor Anderson had a hitting

streak of 16 games earlier this season. That streak stands as the second longest in program history, only three shy of the school record of 19 games set by Mary Kathryn Brannan in 2007.

The freshman has been a staple for the Panthers at the top of the batting order and leads GSU in hits with 23.

into the career lists in two categories. Medlam is currently fifth on the all-time ERA list with a career ERA of 2.08. With 227 strikeouts, she is now 10th on the program career strikeout list.

The 2011 CAA Rookie of the Year leads Georgia State in starts (11), complete games (5), ERA (2.74) and strikeouts (51).

PreSeaSon PollSGeorgia State was selected to finish 2nd in the

CAA, according to the preseason coaches’ poll. The Panthers tied with James Madison with 40 votes apiece. Defending champion Hofstra was unanimously picked to repeat their title in 2013.

Four Panthers were also predicted to finish on All-CAA teams, as named by College Sports Madness.

Lauren Coleman and Callie Alford were both selected to be on the first team, while Kaitlyn Medlam and Ashley Christy landed on the all-conference second team.

This comes as no surprise as all four were named to All-CAA teams during last season.

many Great retUrnSThe Panthers return 15 letterwinners from the

2012 roster. These returning players contributed 83% of the games started last season, 86% of runs scored, 92% of hits and home runs, and 94% of the RBI produced by the Panther offense.

Conversely, GSU will have the task of replacing the three pitchers lost from last season. The Panthers only return 30% of innings pitched and 40% of strikeouts recorded in 2012.

Senior citizenSSimilar to last season, the Panthers will be

lead by a strong senior class again this year. The five members of the class of 2013 are Audrey Mason, Brenna Morrissey, Paige Nowacki, Whitney Phillips and Carrie Williams.

Between them, the seniors have made 537 starts for the Panthers over the course of 656 games played. Four of these outstanding student-athletes have played their entire four-year careers at Georgia State.

Morrissey transferred after a year at Assump-tion College in Massachusetts. Since then, she has started 95 games in 106 games played in three seasons.

StrenGtH oF ScHedUleTwo of the opponents the Panthers will face

during the 2013 season are currently ranked in the USA Today/NFCA preseason Top-25 poll: No. 4/6 Alabama and No. 25 Georgia. Two others (Mississippi State and South Alabama) are receiving votes.

Eight of the teams on GSU’s schedule played in the 2012 NCAA tournament, including the reigning national champion Crimson Tide. Three of these teams are also defending conference champions.

Georgia State played four ranked teams last season and managed a 2-2 record against these foes. The wins came against No. 2 Alabama and No. 25 Georgia Tech, while GSU lost to No. 8 Georgia and No. 24 Auburn.

roGer tHat, coacHGeorgia State head coach Roger Kincaid

begins his third season in charge of the Panthers. During that time, Kincaid has compiled a record of 87-51, including a 28-12 mark in the CAA.

Kincaid took over on an interim basis after the retirement of longtime head coach Bob Heck in 2011. Kincaid immediately led the Panthers to a CAA conference title and the NCAA Tournament.

He was named the CAA Coach of the Year and hired as the program’s permanent head coach prior to the 2012 season.
