• Longtime cross country and track & field mentor Sue Wil-liams headlined the 2014 Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame in-duction class, announced in March and formally honored on June 7... Joining Williams into the CAAHOF were Jessica Campbell Pardoe (basketball), John Faletoese (football), Christi Ray-craft Warner (water polo), Tony Schifano (baseball) and Tani-sha Silas (track & field)... Legendary college water polo coach and former aquatics standout Dante Dettamanti received the fourth Aggie Legacy Award, also presented at the banquet.
• In addition to the CAAHOF inductions, the June 7 banquet also saw the presentations of the major student-athlete awards... Tennis star Megan Heneghan captured the W.P. Lindley Award for athletics, academics and leadership in the community... Golf-er Matt Hansen won the Colby E. “Babe” Slater Award as the outstanding male athlete of the year while track & field sprinter Ashley Marshall received the Hubert Heitman Award as the top female athlete... Heneghan was a double winner for the night, as her women’s tennis team won the Marya Welch Women’s Team GPA Award... Men’s cross country, led by the perfect 4.0 GPA of Capital One Academic All-American Trevor Halsted, picked up its record eighth Lysle Leach Men’s Team GPA honor.
• Eight Aggie teams competed in the NCAA postseason in some form... Women’s gymnastics ranked 34th nationally to qualify for the NCAA Fayetteville Regional... The Aggies had sent at least two individual at-large qualifiers every year since 2010 but had not advanced as a team since 1998... Women’s swim-ming & diving sent senior Liliana Alvarez and freshman Hilvy Cheung to the national championships, while sophomore Lucy Lafranchise advanced to the NCAA Zone E Regionals... Wom-en’s golf earned a spot in the NCAA West Regional for the fifth straight year while men’s golf made history with its first Div. I postseason appearance... The two track & field teams sent their largest combined delegation to the NCAA Outdoor West Prelims, with sprinter Ashley Marshall and middle distance star Raquel Lambdin moving on to the national meet at Oregon.
• UC Davis scored its widest margin of victory in the 10-year history of the Causeway Cup, scoring 68.75 of the 100 possible points... Women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s golf, and men’s and women’s track & field swept their possible points... Women’s tennis had the clinching victory on Feb. 23, scoring an encore of last year’s upset of the then-No. 63 Hornets... The men’s tennis victory also stood out, as UC Davis had not defeated its I-80 rival since 2006... The two track & field dual wins added some icing to the cake: the two teams had combined for just one win in the eight year history of the Causeway Track Classic.
• With a perfect score of 1,000, women’s tennis received its seventh straight NCAA Public Recognition Award for perfor-mance in Academic Progress Rate... In all, seven UC Davis teams had the highest APRs in their respective conferences: women’s tennis (tied), women’s gymnastics, women’s water polo, women’s volleyball (tied), men’s soccer, men’s basketball and football.
• Perhaps buoyed by the response by the March 7, 2013 game, ESPN2 returned for a national telecast of UC Davis men’s basketball, this time on March 1 vs. UC Santa Barbara... The visiting Gauchos pulled off a 67-54 victory but the Aggies drew a season-high 5,227 fans, 10th in school history and No. 2 since the Pavilion installed new seating systems.
• Volunteer assistant coaches and 2012 Olympians Scott Weltz (swimming & diving) and Kim Conley (cross country, track & field) continued to perform well in their respective sports as they march toward the 2016 Summer Games in Rio... Weltz began the school year with a 200 breaststroke title at the U.S. Open... More recently, Conley captured the 10,000 title at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in Sacramento.

Former Aggie swimmer and water polo player Dante Dettamanti received the fourth Aggie Legacy Award for student-athletes who have achieved outstanding postcollegiate athletics achievements. Dettamanti enjoyed a legendary coaching career at Stanford, leading the Cardinal to eight NCAA championships.

• UC Davis hosted three conference championships in 2013-14, starting with the Western Water Polo Association men’s tournament in the fall, continuing through the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women’s gymnastics meet in the winter, and finishing with the Big West Conference track & field meet in the spring... The WWPA Championship was the second such appearance at Schaal Aquatics Center... The MPSF gymnastics championship has come through the Pavilion in 2005, 2008 and 2012... However, this was the first time UC Davis hosted the Big West Conference championship meet since officially becoming a member institution in 2007-08... Additionally, the Aggies hosted UC Riverside in the first round of the Big West men’s soccer tour-nament.
• Former senior associate athletics director and two-time CAA-HOF inductee Pam Gill-Fisher was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Col-legiate Women’s Athletics Administrators during that organi-zation’s annual convention in October... Gill-Fisher had earned NACWAA Div. II Administrator of the Year in 2001, then pre-sided over the governing body in 2003-04.
• Head women’s tennis coach Bill Maze was announced as a 2014 USTA NorCal Hall of Fame inductee... A three-time All-American at Stanford, Maze will be formally inducted at his alma mater’s Bank of the West Classic on July 31.
• Second baseman Steven Patterson was selected in the 10th round by the Cleveland Indians during the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on June 6... He became the first Aggie to be drafted in the first 10 rounds since Scott Lyman in 2011, and the first position player to go that high since catcher Jake Jefferies went in the third round in 2008.
• With 95 in his final season, senior Ryan Sypkens set a Big West Conference record with 315 career three-pointers made... He surpassed Pacific’s Adam Jacobsen (1993-98) at UC Riverside in the season’s penultimate game, then added two more in the final at UC Irvine... Sypkens was one of three UC Davis basketball players to surpass the 1,000-point standard in 2013-14, along with teammate Corey Hawkins and women’s leading scorer Sydnee Fipps.
• Continuing an astounding tradition of success for a nine-year-old program, freshman Paige Lee became the third Aggie to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open... She joins Chelsea Stel-zmiller and Alice Kim, who both participated in the 2009 Open in Bethlehem, Pa.... Lee opened with a solid 73 thanks to a field-leading five birdies, but ultimately did not survive the 36-hole cut at Half Moon Bay GC.
Kim Conley, shown here during her days as an Aggie in 2007, captured the 10,000-meter title at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in June. The UC Davis volunteer assistant coahc passed Jordan Hasay on the final lap to clock a winning time of 32:02.07. Conley competed in the 5,000 at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Freshman Paige Lee became the third Aggie in the relatively young UC Davis women’s golf program to qualify for the U.S. Open, joining Chelsea Stelzmiller (2009) and Alice Kim (2009). Lee did not make the Friday cut but her opening-round 73 was highlighted by five birdies.

• UC Davis men’s soccer defeated the Sacramento Republic FC, the area’s new professional team, during a friendly at Aggie Soccer Field in March... Backup goalkeeper John Piasta, a former cycling star who had not played in a match since the age of 14, celebrated his 21st birthday with a key save on a penalty kick to end the first half... Junior Sam Hoeck scored the contest’s lone goal on a header in the 65th minute.
• Aggie student-athletes continued to showcase their off-field talents in the form of the fifth Art of Athletes show and the seventh Aggie Idol charity talent revue... Swimmer and art stu-dio senior Devon Demont organized the fifth installment of The Art Of Athletes, launched by football player Brandon Tucker in 2009... SAAC officers Brian Ford, Elsie Fullerton, Brandon Greenberg, Sophia Lisaius and Danielle Steffen ran the an-nual student-athlete charity talent show, this time held under the twilight at Toomey Field... This year’s Aggie Idol was the first without judges and final standings; however, the ultimate win-ner was Team Davis, a local non-profit organization aiding those with developmental, cognitive and/or physical disabilities... Even without an admission fee, Aggie Idol raised more than $500 for Team Davis.
