2013 RUTGERS ATHLETICS COMMENCEMENT

The RLA’s Spring workshop on careers in medicine and healthcare was one of the most popular events of the past semester. The well-attended evening offered student-athletes an opportunity to learn from 16 professionals who shared their personal career histories and provided lots of actionable advice.

The evening began with an interview via Skype with Dr. Richard Kleiman, (RU’72 and RU Men’s Lacrosse), an orthopedic surgeon who spoke from his home in Florida. In addition to providing a long-term view of where healthcare in America is headed, Dr. Kleiman encouraged everyone to embrace lifelong learning in a variety of fields – from medicine to the arts – in order to be better caregivers and communicators with both patients and clients.

The panel discussion was impressive, too, as the lineup represented all sorts of graduate degrees: MDs, RNs, OTs, ATCs, an RD and a DPM. Student-athletes also had a chance to participate in small-group conversations and plenty of one-on-one networking took place after the formal program. Some student-athletes were able to secure shadowing opportunities for the summer, while others got a better handle on the next steps they need to take to prepare for life after college.

Mark Your Calendars: The event was so successful, the RLA will bring back this workshop in Spring 2014. Stay tuned for all the details!

Career FairsCareer Fairs can be a great place for student-athletes to land an internship, find a first job, or make an important contact. Rutgers Career Services holds “Career Days” year-round. They are organized by industry, school and type of employment. Four of the most popular ones of the year are the Business, Mathematics, & Liberal Arts Career Day and Grad/Professional School Fair in October and the Internship Career Fair and Education Career Day in February.

At every fair, the RLA is on site, helping student-athletes practice their “pitch” and even passing out resume packets to employers on behalf of the student-athletes whose sports/travel schedules prevent them from attending in person.

Here are three simple ways to take advantage of the Rutgers Career Days available to you:

1. Keep an eye on the Rutgers Career Services website, careerservices.rutgers.edu, for the latest calendar and company information.2. Make sure the RLA has your most recent copy of your resume at ALL TIMES. You never know when Shawn/Sheryl will be talking to a recruiter or will have a chance to meet your dream employer – either at a Career Fair or elsewhere. 3. Sit down with Shawn/Sheryl for just a few minutes to map out a strategy. They will give you the low-down on how these events work, and they will assist you in identifying the companies that might be a right fit for you.

In each newsletter, we ask professionals from dierent industries for advice you can rely on for the rest of your career. For this edition, we talked with Catherine Hetzel, Rutgers ’08.

Fun Facts:• Graduated in Spring 2008 with degree in Journalism and Media StudiesWhere has your career taken you since graduation?• After interning my senior year for Prevention magazine in public relations, I was hired full time to work in marketing at the publisher, Rodale, across all its magazine brands (Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Runner’s World, etc.)• In May 2009, I left Rodale for TYR Sport – a swimwear and triathlon gear brand – to be the content producer and do PR. I worked on product development and launches, national media placement, and professional athlete promotion.• In August 2010, I went back to Rodale (The lesson here: Never burn a bridge!), where I again worked across all the brands to create marketing partnerships and launch the digital editions of all their titles.• This past September, I joined another media company, Meredith Corporation, where I handle data sales and strategy across the company. What is a favorite sports-related memory from Rutgers?• When I was a sophomore, we had a meet against nationally ranked Penn State. We ended up beating them in almost every event and shot up the NCAA rankings to 12th – the highest the team has ever been to this day. That meet is a memory I will always share with my then-teammates. What is a favorite non-sports-related memory from Rutgers? • Sitting in the office of Professor Steve Miller (School of Communication & Information) talking about my interests and career/life path. When you meet mentors who truly believe in you, these conversations are defining moments that teach you your potential and the endless opportunities that exist.

Catherine Hetzel’s Words To Work By:1. You are your own brand – which means position yourself how you want everyone to perceive you (because everyone can learn about you through social media, Google search, and the world of Big Data!). Your brand is your greatest, most valuable asset.2. Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg put it this way: “What would you do if you were not afraid?” Ask and challenge yourself constantly with this question!
