Beaver Hockey 2011-12 game Notes

tHe matcH upThe Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team is back on the road this weekend (Nov. 4-5) as it makes the trip to Sault Sainte Marie, Mich. for a nonconference affair with Lake Superior State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). Each game is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. at LSSU’s Taffy Abel Arena. The series brings an end to a string of eight road games in the Beavers’ first 10 contests of the season. The Beavers, 3-5-0 overall and 2-4-0 in league play, take a break from league play to visit Sault Sainte Ma-rie for the first time in seven years to meet their soon-to-be conference foe Lakers, who are 7-1-0 on the season and are riding a three-game winning streak. Lake Superior State will join the WCHA foe the 2013-14 season. BSU is led offensively by Orban (2-5=7) who is also the team’s top assist man. The team’s 2010-11 scor-ing leader Jordan George leads BSU with four goals. Defensively, its been goalie by committee this season as all three of BSU’s goaltenders have seen time between the pipes through the Beavers’ first eight games. Walsh owns a pair of wins and a .901 save percentage, but Bakala leads the trio with a 3.13 goals against average. The Lakers (7-1-0; 5-1-0 CCHA) come into the weekend following a series sweep of Miami (Ohio) 3-2 (ot) and 5-3. With five CCHA wins, the Lakers currently sit atop the league standings. LSSU is led offensively by junior forward Nick McPharland who has six goals (6-3=9). Sophomore Kyle Jean also has nine points (5-4=9). Goaltender Kevin Kapalka has seen every minute of the Lakers’ season from the crease. He carries a 7-1-0 record, a 2.00 gaols against average and a .924 save percentage.

tHe rivalryThis weekend Bemidji State reconnects with Lake Superior State after a six-year hiatus in the series. A rivalry dating back to 1966 and the small college days, BSU and LSSU have met on 39 previous occa-sions with the Lakers owning a 21-16-2 advantage, which includes a 10-8-1 record versus the Beavers in Sault Sainte Marie, Mich. The teams met on a yearly basis from 1966-1973 as members of the International Collegiate Hock-ey Association (ICHA). BSU and LSSU also have a storied national championship history. BSU defeated Lake Superior State for the NAIA national title in 1968, 1969 and 1970, with the 69 and 70 champion-ships taking place on LSSU ice. The Lakers were unbeaten the last time the teams (Dec. 9-10, 2005) dropping BSU 2-1 in the series opener and earning a 2-2 (ot) tie with the Beavers in the series final at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse.

tHe uNparalleled traditioNThe 2011-12 season represents the 13th at the NCAA Division I level, and the 56th year of intercollegiate com-petition, for a BSU program which has assembled one of the finest traditions in all of American collegiate sport.u BSU owns 13 NAIA, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III national titles.u The Beavers have captured 21 conference titles in 55 seasons of intercollegiate competition.u In 2009, BSU became the first No. 16 seed to ever earn a spot in the Frozen Four. staNdiNgs & raNkiNgstHe coacHesu Bemidji State’s tomserratore (Bemidji State ‘86) is in his 11th season and has an overall record of 181-151-38 (.542) as BSU’s head coach. In addition to directing the Beavers to seasons of at least .500 hockey in seven of the last eight seasons, Serratore’s teams won CHA regular-season championships five times since 2003-04 and made trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2010, with a 2009 appearance in the Frozen Four. He is a five-time CHA Coach of the Year recipient and was Spencer Penrose National Coach of the Year Runner-up in 2009.uNow in his seventh season at LSSU, JimRoque has led the Lakers to a 92-109-39 overall record. The 1987 Lake Superior State graduate is in his third stint on the Lakers’ coaching staff for a total of 17 seasons. He also served as an assistant under Frank Anzalone and Jeff Jack-son before taking the reigns of the program in 2005. As a player, Roque totaled 56 goals and 144 career points from 1983-87 and sits 19th on the Lakers’ all-time scoring list.

last week for tHe BeaversBemidji State was swept in a WCHA series at Minnesota Duluth. BSU scored the first two goals of the series, but was held scoreless for the final 112:34 of the two-game set suffering a 6-2 setback in the opener and a 1-0 loss in the finale. Brad Hunt and Jordan George accounted for the Beavers’ goals. Andrew Walsh was in the nets for the first loss despite turning aside a career-best 34 shots and Bakala fell in the finale.

last time versus tHe lakersThe last time BSU and LSSU met was a two-game nonconference series at the John Glas Fieldhouse Dec. 9-10, 2005. The Lakers earned a 2-1 victory in the series opener netting a pair of goals in the third period. In game two, BSU’s Jake Bluhm tied the game 1-1 2:15 into the third period and Rob Sirianni netted a goal with help from Bluhm with just 86 seconds left in regulation to get the Beavers to overtime and earn a 2-2 tie.

Beavers picked to fiNisH teNtHWestern Collegiate Hockey Association coaches picked Bemidji State to finish 10th in the 41th Annual Grand Forks Herald Preseason Coaches’ Poll. A tenth-place finish is just where the Beavers end the 2010-11 season with a 8-15-5 mark in league play. The Beavers garnered 30 points in the poll to six points behind University of Alaska-Anchorage. Denver University was forecast as the favorite to win the 2011-12 regular-season and the MacNaughton Cup. The Pioneers garnered seven of 12 first-place votes and 115 points to edge University of North Dakota (110).

George posted a career-high 17-19=36 points in 2010-11 to lead the team, while Hunt registered 3-18=21 to finish fourth on the team. BSU returns 59 percent of scoring for a year ago, which includes 62 percent of its assist scoring (90-of-145), 49 percent of its goal scoring (43-of-89).

road warriorsThe Beavers have had to adapt to playing on the road quickly in 2011-12 as eight of their first 10 games of the season have taken place away from home in a string that will conclude this weekend. BSU was 7-9-2 on the road a year ago, including a 7-4-3 stretch on the road after Jan. 7, 2011. The Beavers are 1-5-0 on the road this season and have dropped their last five road contests. The Beavers return home for eight of their next games begining Nov. 11-12.

tHree is tHe magic NumBerIn 2010-11, the three-goal mark was a threshold for Bemidji State. The Beavers were 0-15-2 when allowing more than two goals and were 13-3-2 when scoring at least three. BSU won just one game when scoring fewer than three times--a Feb. 12 1-0 victory at Michigan Tech and garnered two points when allowing more than two goals--a 5-5 tie with Colorado College Feb. 18 and a 3-3 deadlock with Minnesota March 4. In 2011-12 BSU is 3-1-0 when scoring in excess of three goals, and is 0-4-0 when scoring fewer than three in 2011-12.

media iNformatioNgoals Have come easyIf this weekend’s series follows the history of the rivalry between the Beavers and Lakers, fans in at Taffy Abel Arena need to be ready for a couple high scoring affairs. A look over the history of the BSU-LSSU series shows that the teams have posted nearly eight goals per game on average. In the 39 games since the series got its start in 1966, LSSU has averaged 4.44 goals per game and has accounted for more than six in a game 12 times, which includes an 11-goal outburst Feb. 28, 1970. BSU is averaging 3.52 goals per game and has a string of 11 games, from Jan. 13, 1968 to Jan. 24, 1970, during which it netted four-or-more goals in each game.

Quick to strikeScoring first in 20 of 38 contests of 2010-11 the Beavers lit the lamp during the first min-ute of play three times a year ago. Even more, the Beavers found the back of the net on their first shot on goal in six games last season. BSU was 10-8-2 when scoring first. BSU is 1-2-0 when scoring first in 2011-12.

Bsu 18tH iN all-time wiNsBemidji State became the 18th program among the 58 current members of NCAA Divi-sion I to post its 900th all-time victory when it defeated Ala.-Huntsville, 3-2, on Dec. 15, 2006. BSU’s 984 victories currently rank 18th all-time among current members of Division I. Cornell is next ahead of BSU, in 17th all-time with 1,003 victories. Seventeen Division I programs have posted 1,000 wins, including 2011-12 BSU foe Minnesota which leads Divi-sion I with 1,638 all-time victories, and is the only program in the nation with 1,600 or more all-time wins, while Michigan is second with 1,539 victories.

180 iN tHe BooksIn his 11th season as a collegiate head coach, BSU’s bench boss tom serratore recently achieved another milestone--his 180th victory as a head coach in a 6-5 triumph over Michi-gan Tech Oct. 21, 2011. He is 181-149-38 (.546) since inheriting the Beaver hockey pro-gram from legendary R.H. “Bob” Peters prior to the 2001-02 season. Serratore is second at the school in victories by a head coach behind Peters, who posted 702 wins at BSU from 1966-2001.

climBiNg Bsu’s divisioN i assists li stBradHunt has accumulated 71 assists dur-ing his first 120 games, or just over three complete seasons as a Beaver to settle into second on the BSU Division I assists list and tied with Drey Bradley (1981-85) for sixth on BSU’s all-time assist-scoring by defensemen list. Bsu versus tHe NatioNally-raNkedIn 2010-11 the Beavers played 17 games against teams holding down one of the na-tion’s top 15 rankings, which included three of the top four teams according to USA-Today and USA Hockey Magazine. BSU was 7-8-2 versus the nation’s top 15 last season. After going 0-5-1 versus nationally-ranked competition during the first two months of 2010-11, the Beavers are 8-4-1 versus the top 15 since Dec. 3. BSU is 1-5-0 versus the nationally-ranked in 2011-12 Since the Beavers made the jump to the NCAA Division I ranks for the 1999-2000 campaign, BSU is 15-50-4 (.262) versus teams in the top-15. With that said, BSU is now 13-15-2 (.500) versus the top 15 since the beginning of the 2008-09 campaign.

offeNsive defeNsemaNJunior defenseman BradHunt has been a big factor for BSU on both ends of the ice since becoming a Beaver in 2008-09. In addition to his duties in BSU’s defensive zone, he has been a true offensive threat--especially on the power play. As a freshman, he was third on the team scoring 9-23=32 points with a team-leading 7-16=23 coming on the man advantage. As a sophomore he had seven goals and a team-leading 26 assists to pace all BSU defenders, while ranking sixth among the nation’s top bluelin-ers (0.89 ppg). His 17 points (5-12=17) on the power play again paced the team. Last season, he had two goals and 18 helpers. Twelve points (2-10=12) came on the man advantage to place him fourth on the team in power-play scoring. This season he enters the fifth week of play tied for second on the team (2-4=6) in scoring and has one power-play point (0-1=1).

doN’t call it a sHutoutBSU was held without a goal Oct. 29 at Minnesota Duluth. The shutout marked the first time the Beavers were scoreless in a game since a Dec. 11, 2010 game at Wisconsin. The Beavers may enter the series with LSSU without a goal in its last 112:34, but BSU has been shut out in back-to-back games just once in 56 years of hockey--a Nov. 5-6, 2004 series vs. Minnesota State. BSU is 23-15-3 in the games immediate following being shut out.

peNalty killers...The BSU penalty-kill unit held Minnesota Duluth to just two power-play goals on 10 oppor-tunities last weekend. The Beavers are now 29-of-35 (.829) on the kill this season, including a .875 mark in league play (21-of-24). In 2010-11, BSU’s penalty-kill unit held opponents scoreless on 133-of-168 opponent man advantage opportunities (.792) and was 106-for-134 (.791) in WCHA play.

freaky fridayBSU was a meager 4-10-4 in the first game of the weekend series in 2010-11, while the team has experience much greater success, a 10-7-1 record, in the final game of a series. This sea-son BSU is 2-2 on Friday this season and 1-3 on Saturday.

maN advaNtageBemidji State’s power-play was held without a goal last weekend in four chances at Minnesota Duluth and is 7-for-29 (.241) on the season and 6-for-23 (.261) on the man advantage in WCHA play.

tHeN tHere were seveNMattRead, a 2011 graduate of Bemidji State and the Beavers’ Division I-era scor-ing leader, made the Philadelphia Flyers’ 2011-12 opening-day roster and scored his first NHL goal in the Flyer’s second game of the season. Read’s trip to the NHL makes seven products of the Beaver Hockey program to skate in the NHL ranks. He joins former BSU goaltender MattClime (2005-2009) and his teammate andrewMurray(2001-05) as the only other former Bea-vers currently in the NHL.

its sHare of otExtending their March 17 WCHA Final Five quarterfinal game versus Minnesota Duluth to overtime, the Beavers completed the 2010-11 seasons playing in 12 overtime games, marking its most since playing in a school-record 15 in 2002-03. In the 11 years since the Beavers moved to Division I, they have escaped overtime with at least a tie in 75 percent (64) of the 85 games that have needed extra time to decide the outcome. Since March 11, 2006, BSU is 11-6-17 in games extended to sudden death, including a 3-4-5 record in extra time in 2010-11.

sHoot tHe puckBSU has been out shot in six of its eight games this season and trails its opponents 236-190 on the season. orBaN’s BreaktHrougHBrance Orban leads BSU in scoring after six games with 2-5=7 points and is the team’s top assist man. He has now surpassed the scoring totals of both of his first two years and has nearly doubled his career scoring total (6-9=15) already this season. With 2-4=6 points in three weeks of WCHA action, Orban leads the league in scoring.

1-0 wiNs...BSU’s victory at MTU Feb. 12 stands as just the sixth 1-0 in the history of the program and is the first since scoring the only goal of the game Dec. 1, 2006 to defeat Wayne State University. Since making the jump to NCAA Division I for the 1999-2000 campaign, BSU is 2-54-7 when scoring only one goal.

it’s a fiNe liNe...Last season, 19 of BSU’s 38 games were decided by one goal or less, which included seven one-goal losses by the Beavers. Bemidji State was 7-7-5 in games decided by a goal or less. BSU is 1-2-0 in one-goal games this season.

i am iroN maNBrad Hunt is BSU’s current Ironman. Since stepping on campus in the fall of 2008, he has dressed and played in each of the Beavers’ 120 games consecutively. Matt Read set a new mark for game played during BSU’s Division I era a year ago, playing in 147 games for BSU, which included 143 consecutively.

Bsu vs. tHe ccHaBSU’s meeting with Lake Superior State this weekend stands as the third and fourth ver-sus teams hailing from the CCHA this season. BSU split a nonconference series at Miami (Ohio) Oct. 7-8. BSU is 31-37-4 all-time versus CCHA-member teams.

HuNtiNg for 100Alternate Captain Brad Hunt is quickly approaching the 100-point plateau. During his three seasons in the green and white, he has accumulated 21-71--92 points and has already climbed to ninth on BSU’s all-time defensemen scoring list. With two points this weekend, he will match Gary Gustason (1989-93) for eighth with 94 career points. In the history of the BSU hockey program, only five blueliners have topped the 100-point mark with the last being Jude Boulianne Jr. in 1994-95.

Back iN tHe saddleBSU captain Ben Kinne is back in action this season after missing the entire 2010-11 season after suffering a stroke in the offseason. He has been practicing, is in good health and has been cleared to play. In his first two seasons at BSU he piled up 18-21=39 points and played a significant role on BSU’s power-play and penalty-kill units.

players may come...Bemidji State welcomes a group of nine new players into the fold - eight freshmen and one transfer with six playing forward, two looking for a home on the blue line along with a goalie. Freshmen forwards Sean Rudy, Cody Strang, Danny Mattson, Tyler Tosunian and Mitch Cain are looking to earn their way into the BSU lineup, while the sixth forward in the mix is sophomore transfer David Boehm. He is in his second sea-son with the Beavers after sitting out and practicing with the team in 2010-11 after transferring from UMass. Sam Windle and Matt Prapavessis are the team’s new defensemen. The final addition is Andrew Walsh. The goaltender comes into the 2011-12 cam-paign from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, where he also played junior hockey in the NAHL.

...aNd players may goThe conclusion of the 2010-11 campaign, meant the end of the collegiate careers of BSU’s six seniors. The 2011 seniors make up a class that was a part of three College Hockey America regular-season championships, a CHA Tournament title, BSU’s first at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament a trip to the 2009 Frozen four and the transition into a new building-Sanford Center--and the WCHA. BSU’s 2011 senior class included: Ryan Adams, Emil Billberg, Ryan Cramer, Dan MacIntyre, Matt Read and Ian Lowe. Read, now with the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers, left his mark on the program more than any of his departing teammates. Read left BSU as its Division I-era leading scorer (143) and tops the list in goals scoring (65) assist scoring (78) games played (148) and ranks 18th on BSU’s all-time scoring list.

As Bemidji State has made inroads in its devel-opment as a Division I program, its progress in the classroom has been remarkable. In its 11th year under head coach Tom Serra-tore, the BSU program has become an academic juggernaut, annually dominating the academic honor roll while members of College Hockey America and have now carried that tradition on to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. In addition, BSU has had 14 College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District V selections over the last eight years and has passed the NCAA’s first five Academic Prog-ress Rate performance checks with flying colors. Overall, the BSU men’s ice hockey team car-ries a cumulative GPA of over 3.5.

nCaaacademicprogressRateBemidji State men’s hockey received a score of 970 in the May 2009 release of the NCAA’s Aca-demic Progress Rate (APR) score. BSU helped the sport of men’s ice hockey achieve an aggre-gate score of 970, the third-highest of any men’s sport in the Division. The NCAA has established an APR cut rate of 925, which equates to a graduation rate of ap-proximately 50 percent, for all NCAA Division I sports. Programs which fail to meet the cut rate when 2006-07 numbers are added to the 2005-06 and 2004-03 data risk reductions in scholar-ships.

academicall-WCHaBSU led College Hockey America in Academic All-CHA honorees each of its final eight years in the league. In 2010-11, the Beavers began a new tradition of excellence in the WCHA. BSU led the Association with 21 of its 26-man roster earning a place on the Academic All-WCHA squad. In addition, Bemidji State placed a league-leading 11 players selected for the WCHA’s prestigious Scholar Athlete award. BSU has an all-time total of conference 161 Academic picks at the NCAA Division I level and 153 honorees have come in the last 10 years un-der head coach Tom Serratore.

CHastudent-athleteoftheYearKyle Hardwick was named 2010 CHA Student-Athlete of the year at the league’s 2010 awards banquet. The honor is the second to be garnered by a member of the BSU hockey team since the leagues inception. Andrew Murray became the first player in CHA history to be named Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year, picking up the historic sweep at the 2005 CHA awards banquet. Murray, a unanimous First-Team All-CHA pick, became the first BSU skater to be named CHA Student-Athlete of the Year.

academicall-DistrictVOver the last eight years, 14 Beavers have been honored on the CoSIDA Academic All-District V At-Large Team. In 2005, Peter Jonsson became just the second BSU men’s hockey player to be named Academic All-America. He was the only men’s hockey player in the nation to earn First-Team laurels in 2005. He was a two-time Aca-demic All-District V selection, so honored in 2004 and 2005. BSU’s other Academic All-District picks in-clude Riley Weselowski (2006-07-08), Andrew Murray (2005), Bryce Methven (2003-04), Bill Methven (2003) Travis Winter (2008-09), Cody Bostock (2009), Kyle Hardwick (2009-10) and Ryan Adams (2010-11).

C onventional sports wisdom has long contended it is never wise to follow a legend. However, sporting a remarkable laundry-list of achievements after nearly nine years as head coach at Bemidji State, it appears Tom

Serratore is more than comfortable in the role. The legacy Serratore was asked to continue upon accepting the role as Be-midji State’s seventh head coach in 2001 is one of the finest in all of collegiate athletics. Serratore walks by the trophy case on his way to practice each day, in full view of the 13 small-college national championship trophies enshrined therein, trophies won by future hockey Hall of Fame member R.H. “Bob” Peters. Serratore not only had the challenge of inheriting one of the true dynasties in the history of collegiate athletics, he also was called to oversee its growth into a Division I program. While Serratore will be the first to admit he’ll not be able to replicate Peters’ achievements, there can be little doubt the program is in the right hands. BSU finished 4-26-4 in 2000-01, the year before Serratore took control of the program. He led BSU to a 12-18-5 record during his rookie campaign and increased BSU’s win total each of the four years that followed. BSU finished 23-13-1 in 2004-05, giving the Beavers a school-record for wins in a Division I season and back-to-back 20-win campaigns for the first time as a Division I program. In 2008-09 Serratore led the Beavers through the regular season to post their fourth CHA championship in six years before their third CHA Tourna-ment championship, the program’s first NCAA Division I Tournament victory and a chance represent the university and the CHA in the Frozen Four for the first time. The 2009-10 campaign served as the Beaver’s last as a member of College Hockey America and Serratore’s BSU squad went out with a bang. The team posted a 23-10-4 overall record with a 14-3-1 mark in CHA play en route to the team’s third consecutive league regular-season championship and fifth in nine seasons as members of the league. Bemidji State capped the season by earning its first at-large bid and its fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Under Serratore’s guidance, 28 BSU skaters earned All-CHA honors, including two-time First-Team All-CHA picks Marty Goulet (2002-03), Bryce Methven (2003-04), Matt Climie (2006-07), Travis Winter (2006-07, Cody Bostock (2007-08), Brad Hunt (2009-2010) and Matt Read (2009-2010) with four Beavers earning CHA Rookie of the Year laurels. BSU had multiple skaters named First-Team All-CHA seven of its final eight seasons in the league, including a school-record three first-teamers in 2003. Academic excellence has been a staple of the BSU program under Serratore and that trend has continued in the WCHA. The Beavers had a 21 skaters named to the 2010-11 WCHA All-Academic Team with 11 players earning WCHA Scholar Athlete laurels--both numbers were far and away the highest among league member institutions. Under Serratore’s guidance have a league-high 153 student-athletes have been named to confer-ence all-academic teams over the last 10 years. In addition, BSU has had nine CoSIDA Academic All-District V selections during his reign, including 2005 First-Team Academic All-America selection Peter Jonsson. Serratore’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. He is a five-time CHA Coach of the Year, winning the honor in 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010 in 10 years as a collegiate head coach he has been named a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, given annually to the American Hockey Coaches Association’s National Coach of the Year, five times, including a runner-up finish in 2009. Serratore took the reigns as the seventh head coach at Bemidji State in 2001 after having spent the previ-ous three seasons as the associate head coach for Peters. Prior to coming to BSU, Serratore spent five years as recruiting coordinator for the WCHA’s St. Cloud State Huskies, where he recruited several NHL draft picks.

OXFORD, Ohio (Steve Cady Arena) -- Junior forward aaron Mcleod scored twice and the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team got two goals in the final 6:10 of play to defeat No. 1 Miami University 5-3 at Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio. After a shaky first period, BSU seemed to get better as the game rolled on. The tentative Beavers got whistled for a penalty early and the RedHawks capitalized, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal just 2:10 into the game. The power-play marker came off the backhand of Curtis McKenzie. BSU regrouped after allowing the early goal and despite trailing 1-0, held a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Bemidji State shook the butterflies before the second period and knot-ted the score just 1:44 in. McLeod finished an end-to-end rush putting the puck over the shoulder of Cody Reichard for BSU’s first goal of the 2011-12 season. Sophomore JeffJubinville earned and assist on the play after carrying the puck into the neutral zone, fighting through a hook and put the puck on the stick of McLeod between the circles. The momentum would quickly switch ends as it took the top-ranked RedHawks just 1:32 to regain the lead (3:16). Chris Wideman funneled the puck to the net and Blake Coleman deflected it past BSU goaltenderDanBakala and into the back of the cage. Entering the final frame trailing by a goal, the Beavers netted four goals to solidify the win. Just over five minutes in (5:08), Jakeareshenko potted his second col-legiate goal unleashing a shot form the point that glanced of the left post and off the skate of MU goaltender Reichard before sliding beyond the goal line. McLeod picked up his second point of the night as he and senior defender BradHuntearned assisted on the scoring play. McLeod would give the Beavers their first lead of the game, 3-2, when he netted and unassisted goal at the 8:30 mark of the period, but BSU would not make it easy on itself. DrewFisher was whistled for a penalty with 6:10 left in the game. It took 1:40, but MU connected on its second power-play of the night when Alex Wideman tucked a rebound past Bakala. Bemidji State would gain momentum and the lead less than three min-utes later (18:05). DarcyFindlay intercepted a pass out of the corner and buried a backhand to put the Beavers up 4-3. BSU was called for its sixth penalty of the game immediately following the goal setting the RedHawks up on the man advantage for the final 1:50 of regulation. OXFORD,Ohio (Steve Cady Arena) -- The Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team went toe-to-toe with the nation’s top-ranked team, Miami Uni-versity, for 55 minutes Saturday, but a short-handed goal by Matt Tomassoni in the game’s final minutes proved too much as the RedHawks earned a 3-2 victory to split in the season-opening, nonconference series in Oxford, Ohio. Bemidji State alternate captainBradHunt collected a pair of assists, his second and third of 2011-12, in the game to lead the Beavers and BSU con-verted its first power-play goal in six chances this season, but it was special teams situations that ultimately cost BSU the game. The Beavers put the RedHawks on a 5-on-3 power-play opportunity late in the second frame to allow MU to tied the score 2-2 and a power-play miscue led to the short-handed, go-ahead goal with just under five minutes to go in the third. For the second consecutive night, Miami was the first to light the score-board. Tomassoni took a pass from Austin Czarnik and beat BSU goaltender DanBakalaat the 8:06 mark of the first period to put MU up 1-0. Trailing 1-0 to open the second period, sheaWalters collected a loose puck on the doorstep and buried his first goal of the season. Hunt got the play started with a shot form the blueline. Orban picked up the shot off the boards and left it in front for Walters and the Beavers converted their first power-play chance of the season. Just over six minutes later (10:20) the Beavers took the lead, 2-1, whenJordanGeorge put a rebound past the Miami goaltender Connor Knapp for his first tally of 2011. Captain BenKinneand Hunt were credited with assists on the play. Following the goal BSU’s RadoslavIllo and Jakeareshenkowere called for slashing penalties separated by just 14 seconds to gave the RedHawks a 1:46 5-on-3 opportunity. Miami took full advantage of the chance scoring the equalizing goal just 63 seconds later on a Chris Wideman slapshot from the blueline. With 5:26 to play and the score knotted at 2-2, the Beavers got the break it needed when Steven Spinell was whistled for slashing. The penalty supplied the Beavers with their fourth power-play opportunity of the evening. But it was the RedHawks that would use the opportunity to snatched the lead. When Mattprapavessis fell trying to keep the puck in the zone, MU’s Trent Vogel-huber picked up the puck and led the short-handed rush with a shot. Bakala made the initial save, but Tomassoni was there to put the rebound past the BSU goaltender and give the nation’s top-ranked team the lead for good. As time wound down, the Beavers pulled Bakala for an extra attacker, but were unable to score to force overtime. Bakala finished with 23 saves in 58:57 of action. He allowed three goals as his record evens at 1-1-0 on the season. Each teamed completed the night 1-for-4 on the man advantage, with MU’s short-handed marker standing as the decisive goal. (World Arena) -- Bemidji State University new-comer MitchCain netted a goal in his first collegiate game, but that was all the offense the Beavers could muster as No. 8 Colorado College capitalized on a pair of turnovers to spoil BSU’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association opener, 3-1, Friday at World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo. After playing 20 minutes without a goal, the teams combined for three goals in the second, CC took a 2-1 advantage into the third period and would not look back adding a third goal early in the third period to put the game out of reach. The Tigers seemed to multiply the effect of the extra space on its 200-by-100-foot Olympic ice sheet scoring a pair of 4-on-4 goals in the game. The Beavers and Tigers used a large portion of the first period to feel each other out. The teams finished the period with eight shots on goal apiece and the score locked at 0-0. Colorado College came out of the first intermission as the clear aggres-sors putting four of the first five shots on net. The teams began the period play-ing 4-on-4 and it took CC just 25 seconds to take the first lead of the game. Gabe Guentzel capitalized on a BSU turnover netting a goal on a slapshot from the blueline. The Beavers climbed back into the game, knotting the score at 1-1 at the 6:41 mark. BSU newcomer Cain was rewarded for persistence after crashing the net and slipping a rebound past CC goaltender Joe Howe. In his collegiate debut, the goal stands as the first of Cain’s BSU career. Jakeareshenko fun-neled the puck toward the net and BranceOrban, who centered the puck to the slot, were credited with assists on the scoring play. CC regained the lead, 2-1, eight minutes later (14:40) on its second 4-on-4 goal of the game. Jaden Schwartz scored his first goal of the season after holding the puck long enough to force BSU goaltender DanBakala to commit and buried a shot in the virtually open net. The Tigers’ lead swelled to 3-1 at the 5:45 mark of the third period. De-fender Michael Boivin beat Bakala with a backhand from the left circle. With 2:00 minutes left in regulation, BSU Head Coach tomserratorepulled BSU’s goaltender in favor of an extra attacker and just moments into play, the tactic resulted in a BradHunt slap shot ringing off the left post, but that was as close as the Beavers would come. Although the team held the puck in the zone for all but the final 10 seconds, it was unable to get the puck through traffic to find the back of the net. Bakala was tested often tonight. He made 25 saves and helped the BSU penalty-kill unit hold a high-octane offensive CC team scoreless on four power-play opportunities. He falls to 1-2-0 on the season. Howe earned the win turning away 25 of 26 BSU shots. In addition to Cain, tonight’s game was one to remember for DannyMatt-son also made his debut in the green and white. On the strength of a hat trick from Ryan Schwartz and three points (1-2=3) from brother Jaden and Scott Winkler, the Tigers’ potent offense was too much for the Beavers down the stretch. Bemidji State drew first blood for the first time all season when Walters put a rebound back from the left post on the power play. Illo, who took the initial shot, and Orban were credited with assists on the play. A delayed-penalty situation allowed CC even the score at the 11:34 mark of the first period. Jeff Collett wrapped around the goal and stuffed the puck past BSU goaltender MathieuDugas, who was in the net for his first start of the season. The Beavers regained the lead at the 16:08 mark on a tremendous effort by newcomer MitchCain. The rookie picked up the puck on BSU’s own blue line and skated into the offensive zone before getting a backhand off the pads of the CC goalie. Linemate DrewFisher followed on the play and pocketed the rebound to give the Beavers a 2-1 lead. Despite trailing 13-9 in shots on goal, the Beavers took a 2-1 lead into the locker room after 20 minutes of play. The lead would last only 37 seconds. CC won the second period’s open-ing face off and when Winkler deflected a shot off R. Schwartz’s skate in front and past Dugas. BSU used its third power-play opportunity to regain the lead. BenKinneburied a one-timer from the top of the left circle with just 12 seconds left on the man advantage. The goal was the first of the season for Kinne and the first since he scored Mar. 13, 2010. The junior sat out the entire 2010-11 season after suffering a stroke. After R. Schwartz knotted the score at 3-3 15:54 into the second, BSU capitalized on its fourth power-play chance. Illo netted his first goal of the season and his third point of the night when a blistering slap shot from the point found its way through traffic at the 18:19 mark. Orban and Walters were credited with assists on the scoring play giving each his second assist of the evening. After 40 minutes and four goals allowed, Colorado College head coach Scott Owens elected to pull goaltender Josh Thorimbert for Joe Howe to begin the third period. The change served as a spark for the Tigers. Howe posted a perfect 11-save period and gained the win in net as the CC attack potted a trio of goals. Dugas was tagged with the loss after allowing five goals, but posted 33 saves in 59:50 between the pipes in his first appearance since a Jan. 22, 2011 start versus St. Cloud State University. Following the loss, BSU trails CC in the all-time series 2-5-1, while CC owns a 5-1-0 advantage versus the Beavers in Colorado Springs, Colo.

(Sanford Center) -- The Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team battled back from a two-goal deficit early and held off a late rally to hand Michigan Technological University its first loss of the season 6-5 in the Beavers’ 2011-12 home-opener Friday evening at Sanford Center. Eleven different BSU players found the scoring column in the game, led byJordanGeorge and BranceOrban, who each netted two goals, and Mattprapavessis who posted a career-high two assists. Junior captain BenKinne opened an action-packed first period that saw seven goals scored with is second lamplighter of the season at the 2:51 mark on a wrist shot from between the circles. George and Prapavessis were cred-ited with assists on the play. Carl Nielsen tied the score 6:17 mark sparking a run of three goals by the Huskies, including tallies by David Johnstone and Blake Pietila, to take a 3-1 lead 12:49 into the first. Following MTU’s third goal, BSU head coach tom serratore quickly pulled goaltender starting goaltender Dan Bakala and inserted andrewWalsh. The move proved to stir a BSU comeback as the newcomer’s team-mates responded by potting three goals during the final four minutes of the period and took a 4-3 advantage into the first intermission. George started the flurry with his second goal of the season at the 16:52 mark. He added a rebound goal from the right post 56 seconds later (17:48) to knot the score at 3-3 before Orban finished a nifty display of power-play passing fromJamieMacQueen and sheaWalters as the Beavers’ regained the lead, 4-3, with just 1:16 remaining in the first period. Bemidji State’s lead swelled to two goals on an unassisted marker by Orban at the 10:32 mark of the second frame. Leading 5-3 to open the third period, the Beavers scored their fifth unan-swered goal 8:17 mark. BradHunt recorded the first goal of his senior season on a slapshot from the point just moments after the Beavers’ fifth power-play opportunity of the evening had expired. Three minutes later, the Huskies reeled the Beavers to within two goals, 6-4, when Alex McLeod collected a Steven Seigo attempt that rung off the right post and deposited it into the back of the net for his first of the 2011-12 season. The Huskies put the Beavers on the ropes late as Seigo added a goal through traffic with 33 seconds remaining. MTU would pull its goaltender in the game’s final moments and would generate two quality scoring changes with the extra attacker, but was unable to penetrate the goal as the Beavers escaped with a 6-5 victory. BSU out shot the Huskies 34-23 and went 1-for-6 on the power play, while its penalty-kill unit was flawless snuffing out all four of MTU’s power-play op-portunities. Walsh posted 17 saves and allowed two goals in relief of Bakala. The rookie gained the victory in his collegiate debut. Josh Robinson was tagged with the loss after he allowed all six of the Beavers’ goals. He turned away 28 BSU shots in the game as he fell to 4-1-0 on the season.

(Sanford Center) -- Rookie goaltender andrewWalsh turned away 31 Michigan Technological University shots, while captain BenKinne recorded a goal an assist to lead the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team to a 3-1 victory Saturday at Sanford Center. The win allows the Beavers to complete the series sweep of the Huskies. The Beavers found themselves down 1-0 after a sluggish first period, but bounced back in the second to net a pair of goals and used a solid defensive effort to even its record at 3-3-0 on the season and 2-2-0 in league play. The Huskies’ persistent play in the first led to an early 1-0 lead. Alex McLeod forced a rebound under the pads of Walsh at the 7:56 mark and fin-ished the period with a 12-5 lead in shots on goal. Whistled for five penalties in the second period, Michigan Tech found itself short a man for 6:10 and an energized Beavers’ line up made the Huskies pay. BSU posted a pair of power-play markers in four opportunities and skated out of the second with a 2-1 advantage. Just 33 seconds into Bemidji State’s second man advantage opportunity of the evening (9:41),sheaWalters took a pass from Kinne to knot the score at 1-1 with the third goal of his senior campaign. The Beavers gained a 2-1 lead at the 18:54 mark on Kinne’s third marker of the season. RadoslavIllo collected the puck on the neutral zone changed directions and found BranceOrban on the blueline. Orban shifted the puck to Kinne streaking down the slot and the junior converted the one-on-one op-portunity on the power-play. Bemidji State would add another goal at the 12:26 mark of the third period on DrewFisher’s second marker of the season and Walsh would take care of the rest. Despite being out shot 32-16 in the game, BSU pulled out the victory. Walsh recorded 31 saves and allowed just one goal collecting a win in his first collegiate start. He improves to 2-0-0 on the season. BSU finished the game 2-for-7 on the power-play, while its penalty-kill unit was flawless killing all four of the Huskies man advantage opportunities. The win extends the Beavers’ unbeaten streak versus the Huskies to six games (5-0-1) as BSU improved to 5-2-1 in the all-time BSU/MTU series. The early 2-0 deficit served as a wake up call as the Bulldogs as UMD would go on to dominate play, out shooting the Beavers 40 -17 in the game. The Beavers’ first goal came just 6:21 into the first period when BradHunt followed Jeff Jubinville and aaron Mcleod the net and put the puck past UMD goaltender Kenny Reiter for his second goal of the season. McLeod and Jubinville were credited with assists on the scoring play. BSU built a two-goal lead 65 seconds later. DavidBoehm found JordanGeorge behind the Bulldogs’ back line. George carried the puck into the zone and got a shot off. Reiter got a piece of it, but the puck trickled across the goal line for the junior’s third goal in the last three games. But the BSU lead would not last long. Out shot 15-5 in the first period, freshman goaltender andrewWalsh, making his second collegiate start, was tested early and often and both UMD goals in the frame came when BSU was unable to corral rebounds. The first came at 8:21 when Walsh turned away four point-blank Bulldog shots, but Wade Bergman netted a goal form the right post when the Bea-vers were unable to clear the puck. The second came at the 13:24 mark of the period when J.T. Brown slipped a rebound past Walsh to tie the game at 2-2. The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game at the 8:15 mark of the second period. After killing a pair of UMD power-plays, in the opening mo-ments of the period, Keegan Flaherty slid the puck between the skates of Walsh to put the Bulldogs up 3-2 and the defending champs would not look back. Just 77 second later, Chris Casto scored his first collegiate goal to put the Bulldogs up 4-2 heading into the third period. The Bulldogs took a 5-2 when Brady Lamb converted the Bulldogs’ first power-play goal of the evening at the 7:11 mark of the third. The goal came with just two second remaining on UMD’s fifth man advantage opportunity of the game, snapping a string of 11 consecutive penalties killed by BSU. UMD finished the game 1-for-5 on the power-play, while holding the Beavers scoreless on their only two power-play opportunities of the night. The Bulldogs finally build a four-goal lead, 6-2, at the 11:07 mark of the third when Jack Connolly capped and end-to-end individual effort with a wrist shot that found the back of the net. Walsh made 34 saves in the game, but allowed six UMD goals and was tagged with the loss. He falls to 2-1-0 on the season. On the other end of the ice Reiter stopped 15 of 17 BSU shots to gain the win. He improves to 3-2-1 in 2011-12. The victory gives the Bulldogs a 20-10-1 record in the all-time series, while BSU is 8-5-1 in the last 14 meetings.

(AMSOIL Arena) -- No. 15 University of Minnesota Duluth earned a 1-0 victory versus the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team Saturday in a true defensive battle at AMSOIL Arena. It took more than 51 minutes of play, but Jack Connolly would net a pow-er-play goal at the 11:21 mark of the third period to break a scoreless tie and give Minnesota Duluth all the offense it would need as the Bulldogs’ goaltender Kenny Reiter would turn away all 25 Bemidji State shots for his first shutout of 2011-12. After allowing the UMD to pepper Friday’s goaltender andrewWalsh (Fr., G, Dawson Creek, British Columbia) with 40 shots as the team surrendered six goals, the Beavers bounced back Saturday with a solid defensive effort, but were unable to capitalize on any offensive opportunities. Tied 0-0 at the end of 20 minutes of play, the Beavers held an 8-6 advan-tage in shots on goal. The stalemate continued through the end of the second period, however, UMD out shot BSU 13-11. BSU got its best scoring chance of the night at the 8:58 mark of the second when Luke McManus hauled BranceOrban (Jr., F, Lethbridge, Alberta) down in the act of shooting. The officials awarded Orban with a penalty shot, but Reiter kicked the attempt to the side to send the teams into the final 20 minutes of regulation with the score tied 0-0 with each team having 19 shots on goal. Minnesota Duluth looked to get the break it would need to pull ahead early in the third. Just 43 seconds in, BSU senior forward DarcyFindlay (Bristol, Quebec), who was skating in his first game since suffering an injury in the Beavers’ Oct. 8 contest at Miami University, was whistled for a major penalty and game misconduct, setting the Bulldogs up with a five-minute power-play opportunity. But BSU responded, holding UMD scoreless and allowing the Bulldogs just one shot on goal during the opportunity. The kill, swung momentum in BSU’s favor, but it was unable to take ad-vantage. Four minutes and 41 seconds later, Bemidji State again found itself down a man when DavidBoehm (Jr., F, Naples, Fla.) was booked for tripping. The penalty put the Bulldogs on the power-play for the fifth time and it would take them just 51 seconds for them to find the back of the net. For the second consecutive night, UMD finished 1-of-5 on the power-play, while BSU had nothing to show for its two man advantage opportunities. After allowing the Beavers to score on their first two shots in the series, the Minnesota Duluth goaltender stopped BSU’s next 40 shots and held the Beavers scoreless for the final 112:54 of the series as he backstopped the Bulldogs to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) series sweep. Reiter’s shutout stands as the first rime BSU has been held scoreless since a 2-0 loss at Wisconsin Dec. 11, 2010. The last time BSU lost a 1-0 game was Dec. 15, 2007 versus Minnesota State. BSU goaltender DanBakala (Sr., Calgary, Alberta) posted 27 saves in his return to the line up. He allowed the game’s only goal and was pegged with the loss. He falls to 1-3-0 on the season. The victory gives the Bulldogs a 21-10-1 record in the all-time series, while BSU still holds an 8-6-1 advantage in the last 15 meetings.
