Sweets for Your Sweet

Symphony Bars

1 cup margarine1/2 tsp salt2 cups sugar4 eggs3 tsps vanilla2 cups sifted flour2 cups chopped walnuts2 oz. melted baking chocolate (unsweetened)

Cream margarine and gradually add sugar and beat until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs and vanilla. Sift flour and salt together and gradually add to the creamed mixture. Blend in the nuts and divide the dough in half. Add the melted chocolate to half the dough. Spread the white half of the dough in the bottom of a greased and floured 9x13 inch pan and then spread the chocolate half of the dough on top of the white layer. Bake at 350˚ for 30 minutes. Frost when cool.

Frosting:

5 Tbsps flour1 cup milk1 cup sugar2 tsps vanilla1 cup margarine

In a heavy sauce pan slowly blend the flour and milk. Cook over low heat and stir constantly until this paste thickens. Cool thoroughly. Now cream margarine, sugar and vanilla in a small mixing bowl. Gradually add the thickened paste and beat on high speed for 5 or 6 minutes or until frosting is creamy. Spread on cooled bars. Makes 28-32. Very rich and tasty.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

2 1/2 squares unsweetened chocolate (1 ounce squares)

1/2 cup margarine2 cups flour1/2 tsp baking soda1 tsp baking powder1/4 tsp salt1 1/4 cups white sugar2 eggs1 tsp vanilla2/3 cup sour cream2 cups milk chocolate chips

Melt the chocolate and margarine in the microwave until smooth. Sift flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt and set aside. In a medium sized bowl, beat the sugar, eggs and vanilla until well blended. Stir in the sifted ingredients alternately with sour cream, then mix in the chocolate chips. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto a baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes at 350˚. Store in an airtight container.

SCULPTOR H. DANIEL WEBSTER

Harry Daniel Webster (1880-1912) spent much of his childhood on a farm near Rowena, SD. After attending art school in Philadelphia, PA, he worked to become a nationally acclaimed sculptor.

In 1910 Webster began one of his most well-known works, a life-size statue of the beloved General William H. H. Beadle. Because he had led the movement to save school lands in South Dakota for the support of education, the public held Beadle in very high esteem. Children across the state collected pennies to help pay for the statue, and Webster contributed his time and artistic talent.

General Beadle posed while standing before a podium in the basement of the 1908 first (north) unit of the original Washington High School. Webster sculpted Beadle’s likeness using clay from the North Main Avenue hill. School children, old friends, and the curious regularly watched the sculptor at work.

The final statue was made from Tennessee marble. Both Beadle and Webster were present in the rotunda of the South Dakota State Capitol in Pierre for its formal dedication on November 28, 1911.

In 1937 a bronze replica became the first statue of a South Dakotan in national Statuary Hall at the nations Capitol in Washington, D.C.
