Annual Report Brandon University Foundation
2009
It is my pleasure to provide my first report to you as President of Brandon University Foundation. It’s been a wonderful year.
We were pleased to welcome BU’s new President Dr. Deborah Poff. Her collaborative nature and extensive knowledge and experience ensured that she integrated quickly and successfully into the Foundation and its activities. We’ve been working well together and we look forward to many successful years ahead.
Despite the difficult economic times, this year’s annual fund contributions increased 23% over last year to $64,459. I believe many of us appreciate the importance of Brandon College and Brandon University and how our Alma Mater has contributed to our success. Today’s students face significant financial challenges and it is wonderful that so many of you contributed to this important annual campaign. Thank you for your generosity.
The Standing Ovation Campaign has now concluded with a total raised of $824,510. We are particularly happy to tell you that the Lorne Watson Recital Hall Seat Sale was very successful. If you would like to participate in this unique opportunity to name a seat,
please contact us. There are still some seats available.
The Foundation also spent time this year formulating a new Management Committee structure and recruiting new members to the Foundation, building on the work done by previous executives.
To conclude, I would like to thank our donors. You are at the core of all that we do at the Foundation. I would also like to thank my fellow Foundation
members, particularly Management Committee and staff who have shared in the work and who have been so supportive as I’ve moved through the learning curve as Brandon University Foundation President. I look forward to a second year as your President.
With warmest regards,
Pat BrittonPresident, Brandon University Foundation
Greetings from the President of Brandon University Foundation
This has been an exciting first year as Brandon University’s 14th President and Vice-Chancellor. There have been a number of successes in which we can collectively take pride.
In February, we wrapped up our Standing Ovation Campaign having raised a total of $824,510. Thanks to all for your generous contributions! We officially ended the campaign with a wonderful special performance of The Schumann Letters with Colin Fox, Susan Gilmour Bailey and our very own Dean of Music, Dr. Michael Kim.
Thanks also for the success of our annual campaign. We extend our warmest thanks for your continued commitment to BU.
Our most exciting announcement, held on March 19th, brought the Prime Minister of Canada, the Premier of Manitoba, the mayor of Brandon as well as other elected officials and dignitaries to our campus for the announcement of the Healthy Living Centre. I want to express special thanks to my predecessor, Dr. Louis Visentin, for his commitment to this project.
This has been a dream for BU for a long time and now we are in the planning stages for developing a world class building to be opened in September 2012. Previous contributions to this project have produced $6.3 million toward its success. Thanks, again. We still do have some funding gaps and will be calling on your help to complete this important facility which will serve our athletes, our
broader student community, our staff and the city of Brandon.
I look forward to working with you in the future in building on our strengths for the continued success and growth of Brandon University.
Warmest regards,
Deborah C. Poff, PhDPresident and Vice-Chancellor

The Standing Ovation Campaign drew to a successful close in February 2010 and we celebrated with a finale concert, The Schumann Letters – a musical narrative featuring actor Colin Fox, pianist Michael Kim, Dean of the BU School of Music, and soprano Susan Gilmour Bailey.
Through the generosity of many donors and alumni who supported the Standing Ovation Campaign, our School of Music continues to maintain its long tradition of musical excellence in training and performance. Our collection of musical instruments continues to be updated, and various newly endowed scholarships and bursaries have been created that will provide much-needed financial support that will enhance the School’s ability to retain and attract talented students. Gifts to The Lorne Watson Recital Hall Seat Sale have created an endowment that will continue to provide for the most pressing needs of the School of Music in perpetuity, and funds have been designated to outreach and teaching support.
On behalf of the students, staff, and faculty of the School of Music, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our donors for their continued support and generosity, and to the Office of Institutional Advancement and BU President Dr. Deborah Poff for their support of the School of Music.
With appreciation,
Dr. Michael KimDean, School of MusicStanding Ovation Campaign Chair

Healthy Living Centre

On March 19th, 2010, Prime Minister Stephen Harper visited Brandon University to announce the Government of Canada’s support for the Brandon University Healthy Living Centre. The project will expand and improve the current gymnasium built in 1965 at the Brandon University campus.
The Centre will include three full-scale gyms, classrooms, an indoor walking track and fitness facilities. The building will be certified LEED Silver, which means that it will be energy efficient and that its construction will be done using sustainable materials. Both the University community and area residents will be able to use the facility.
“When the work is done, it will dramatically expand access to local recreational facilities for the whole community,” said the Prime Minister. “And it will nurture future generations of athletes who will build on Brandon’s reputation for athletic excellence.”
The Province of Manitoba, the City of Brandon and Brandon University are also supporting the project. The Prime Minister was joined by Greg Selinger, Premier of Manitoba; Merv Tweed, Member of Parliament for Brandon–Souris; Dave Burgess, Mayor of Brandon; and Dr. Deborah Poff, President of Brandon University.
“This new healthy-living centre will not only support Brandon University students, staff and athletic teams, but it will add more recreational options for residents from Brandon and the Westman area,” said Premier Selinger.
If all Government of Canada program requirements under the Building Canada Fund are met, and a contribution agreement is signed, support for the estimated $18.8-million project is as follows: • Upto$5.31millionfromtheGovernmentofCanada• Upto$5.31millionfromtheProvinceofManitoba• $6.3millionfromBrandonUniversity(donor
contributions)• $1.88millionfromtheCityofBrandon
“This announcement fulfills a long-term hope for the Healthy Living Centre that will enhance Brandon University’s ability to recruit and retain students who will study, train and play sports at our institution,” said Dr. Poff. “As well, the University will be able to have world-class facilities that will meet the health and well-being needs of all our students, staff and faculty as well as the broader community of Brandon.”
Over the next 3-4 months the University will be working on the business case for the Healthy Living Centre. The approximate timeline as the project moves forward is as follows:
• July2010–TheMinisterwillbeaskedtoapprove the project and detailed design work and drawings will begin. Construction drawings, tender documents and the tendering process are completed during this time.
• May2011–Constructionstartsonnewportionofthe building.

A legacy gift is a charitable donation arranged during a donor’s lifetime but generally not available to Brandon University until sometime in the future. Combined with estate and tax planning, legacy gifts can maintain the value of a donor’s estate for loved ones while allowing the donor to make a gift without affecting their current lifestyle. Methods of making a legacy gift include bequests, gifts of securities or life insurance, and charitable remainder trusts, among others. Whether gifts are in support of endowments for student scholarships, equipment funds, renovations or other special projects, they all have a positive impact on the continued success of the University. Thanks to the forethought of many friends and alumni of Brandon University, gifts such as these are making a significant impact on our programs and services.
Legacy Giving at Brandon University
Endowment Funds
BU’s Department of Geology is the recipient of a very generous $110,000 bequest from Garth Davis Baker. An avid rock hound and member of the Rock and Gem Society, Mr. Baker’s generous bequest will fund five endowments in support of the Department of Geology and its students: the Garth Davis Baker Memorial Bursaries in Geology, the Garth Davis Baker Memorial Equipment Endowment in Geology, the Garth Davis Baker Undergraduate Geosciences Research Scholarships, the Garth Davis Baker Academic Scholarships in Geology, and the Garth Davis Baker Geosciences Professional Development Scholarships. The Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative has provided matching funds for $100,000 of this bequest, resulting in $210,000 in endowments to support the Department of Geology in perpetuity.
Together, these endowments will reward geology
students for academic achievement and research potential, provide funding for students in financial need and for professional educational opportunities for geology
students, and will generate ongoing funding for geosciences equipment.
Garth Davis Baker (March 15, 1938 – May 6, 2007) was Brandon born and raised, and enjoyed dairy, beef and grain farming with his brother Lyle until health issues forced him to retire in 2002. He enjoyed music, exploring the world, sketching and trying new activities.
Mr. Baker wished to enrich the lives of others who are pursuing research in undergraduate studies in geology. Through this bequest he has established a lasting legacy that will continue to
do just that. In recognition of his immense support, the Department of Geology looks forward to naming Room 2-31 in the Brodie Building The Garth Davis Baker Petrology Lab.

Legacy Giving at Brandon University
The A. E. McKenzie Legacy SocietyThe A. E. McKenzie Legacy Society is named in honour of Albert Edward McKenzie, the first person to designate a legacy gift to Brandon University. Given at the height of the Depression in the 1930’s, this gift saved the University from certain closure.
The A. E. McKenzie Legacy Society recognizes the leadership of farsighted individuals who have established a planned gift for Brandon University. We encourage those who have set up a planned gift to advise us of their intentions. By doing so, we are able to recognize them for their gift and also to extend our sincere appreciation to them. This also provides an opportunity to discuss with them how their gift will benefit the University. When requested, anonymity is kept in strictest confidence.
Thank you to the following members of the A.E. McKenzie Legacy Society:

Known for a distinguished career in education that spanned 40 years, Dr. Wilfred W. McCutcheon (1919-2008) is perhaps best known to Brandon College alumni and friends for his tenure as Brandon College Dean of Education from 1954 to 1967, and for being instrumental in establishing the first program for western Manitoba elementary school teachers – the Teacher Training Course he initiated in 1955 at Brandon College.
Dr. McCutcheon was highly respected by his students and colleagues. In 1989, he was presented with an Honorary Doctorate from Brandon University. In 1998, alumni of the Teacher Training and Education classes of 1956-1967 established the Dr. Wilfred W. McCutcheon Scholarship in Education in his honour. The scholarship provides two awards of approximately $2,000 each annually to Education students who demonstrate a combination of outstanding academic achievement, excellence in leadership ability, and professional promise in classroom teaching.
Dr. Wilfred W. McCutcheon will indeed continue to be known for “providing quality opportunities for all aspects of humanity.” He remembered Brandon University with a very generous bequest in excess of $250,000. These funds, as per his instructions, have been designated to The Dr. Wilfred W. McCutcheon Scholarship in Education, and to an endowment to provide for the purchase of books and materials relevant to the work of the Faculty of Education. Indeed, his love of learning, which he credits to his maternal grandfather, will be extended through this planned gift to the many Education students that will benefit from his legacy.

The Presidents’ Circle is a group of dedicated supporters that donate $1,000 or more to Brandon University within one year. Their contributions provide a solid foundation for the future of the University. In appreciation of their support, members
are invited to participate in exclusive events that feature exciting campus accomplishments and activities.
On March 20th Presidents’ Circle members in Winnipeg, along with our Winnipeg-area School of Music
alumni, were invited to take advantage of a reduced ticket price for the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s Musically Speaking Concert Series: Orchestration Reloaded, featuring Alexander Michelthwate, conductor, and Inon Barnatan, piano. The evening featured a special post-concert performance by BU music students, and a reception during intermission.
On May 29th a reception and auction of inspired new works by students and faculty of the BU Visual and Aboriginal Arts Department was held in the Glen P. Sutherland Gallery of Art. Funds raised through the NEWorks Art Exhibition and Auction will support a new scholarship and bursary for Visual and Aboriginal Arts students.
Our Winnipeg members were invited to join us at the Manitoba Club with hosts Dr. Kevin and Mrs. Els Kavanagh for an evening reception introducing new BU President Dr. Deborah Poff on September 16th.
Toronto area members and alumni joined us on November 13th for an exclusive sneak preview of The Schumann Letters – a musical narrative featuring actor Colin Fox, pianist Michael Kim, Dean of the BU School of Music, and soprano Susan Gilmour Bailey. The reception and performance was held at the home of BU alumnus Andrew Souvaliotis ’84 and Joe Gisini.
Our 2009 Presidents’ Circle season concluded with our annual Christmas Reception held at University House on December 13th.
For further information or to become a member of the Presidents’ Circle, contact Shawna English, Development Officer at 727-9715 or [email protected].
