Janette Mariscal MontalvoWashington State UniversityMajor: Psychology | Minor: Comparative Ethnic StudiesMy goal for the first semester at WSU was to earn a 3.0 grade point average. I exceeded my expectations: through hard work and determination I earned a 3.91 GPA and was on the President’s Honor Roll! I learned that college can be for anybody that sets their mind to earn success. My first semester at WSU was the best! I had wonderful professors who helped me reach my goals and discover hidden talents.

Lerina GarzaYakima Valley Community CollegeMajor: Food TechnologyThe scholarship I received from the Washington Apple Education Foundation is greatly appreciated, and has helped in supporting not only my education but also my goals and dreams. This past year has brought new experiences. I have found a new respect for agriculture and the people who call it their way of life. I am pleased to be getting an education in a field I can honestly say I

will be proud to work in. Through the year I have had the pleasure of meeting people who work in agriculture, and have experienced the pride they take in their work, not only because it’s a job, but because it is part of who they are.

Jose GarciaWashington State UniversityMajor: Business Administration

Zachary BishopEastern Washington UniversityMajor: Mechanical Engineering

Almost eighteen years ago my parents made the decision to leave Mexico and seek employment and better living conditions in the United States. My parents’ decision allowed me to attend college. I know how important WSU is to me and also to my younger sisters. As the oldest and first generation student, I have to create a path for my sisters to follow. Being the oldest isn’t easy, but I have an opportunity to create a better future for myself and my sisters.

The scholarship I received from the Washington Apple Education Foundation last year helped me to meet all of my first year financial obligations. I could not have done this without the help of local foundations and scholarship organizations. When I come home from college – whether I’m at the grocery store or enjoying dinner at a local restaurant with my family – I realize what a privilege it is

to be a “small town” native. I am thankful for the opportunities that college is providing me, but I will never forget the foundation I have laid growing up in Quincy, Washington.
