Depuis vingt ans, la Cité internationale des arts à Paris et l’Université Joshibi d’Art et de Design au Japon entretiennent une féconde collaboration. Pour célébrer cet anniversaire, une exposition rassemblant un groupe d’artistes japonaises est organisée à la Cité internationale des arts, lieu où toutes ces femmes ont réalisé une résidence.

« Future Mythology Diaries » illustre les connexions qui existent entre la vie quotidienne et le futur. Tandis que certains travaux s’intéressent aux échanges qu’ont établis l’être humain et la nature, d’autres projets se concentrent sur les enjeux sociaux et historiques en interrogeant les notions de traces et de souvenirs. Huit femmes, aujourd'hui établies dans diverses villes européennes, y présentent une grande variété d'expressions : céramiques contemporaines, tissages, peintures, installations, photographies et films.

À chaque espace correspond une phrase du journal intime de l'artiste qui y est présenté : ce dispositif incite le visiteur à partager plus étroitement le point de vue de son auteur tout en l'invitant à penser et à imaginer l'avenir.

L'UNIVERSITÉ JOSHIBI & LA CITÉ INTERNATIONALE DES ARTS

À une époque où, au Japon, seuls les hommes avaient accès à l'enseignement supérieur, l'Université Joshibi a été fondée en 1900 sur le principe de « l'indépendance des femmes grâce à l'art », destiné à favoriser leur ascension sociale en leur permettant aussi de devenir professeurs dans ce domaine. Dotée de plusieurs ateliers propices à une expression foisonnante que ce soit sur le campus Suginami (situé près de Shinjuku au centre de Tokyo) ou sur le vaste campus Sagamihara, cet établissement a révélé moult talents (graphistes, créatrices, enseignantes...).

Chaque année, y est décerné à une étudiante diplômée le « Joshibi Paris Prize » dont la lauréate a le privilège d'effectuer une résidence à la Cité internationale des arts, en France. Le prix est attribué sous le patronage de la « Fondation Fumiko Ōmura ». Afin de soutenir des artistes féminines et des chercheuses internationales, cette structure a été créé en 1999 par le Docteur Satoshi Ōmura, biochimiste lauréat du « prix Nobel de physiologie ou médecine ». En découvrant de nouvelles substances à partir de micro-organismes présents dans le sol, ce savant a guéri d'innombrables malades. Le nom de sa Fondation rend hommage à son épouse. Lors de l'exposition « Future Mythologie Diaries », seront notamment projetées des vidéos montrant les œuvres d'anciennes lauréates dont la carrière se poursuit toujours au Japon ainsi que des interviews de professeurs de l'Université Joshibi.

Inaugurée en 1965 à l'initiative de Monsieur et Madame Brunau, la Cité internationale des arts est une fondation reconnue d'utilité publique qui accueille en résidence chaque mois plus de 300 artistes de toutes disciplines, venus du monde entier, en partenariat avec 135 organismes français et internationaux. Lieu de vie ouvert au dialogue entre les cultures, ils y rencontrent leurs publics et des professionnels, sur deux sites complémentaires (l'un dans le Marais, l'autre à Montmartre).

For 20 years, the Cité internationale des arts in Paris and the Joshibi University of Art and Design in Japan have enjoyed a strong collaboration. To celebrate this anniversary, an exhibition bringing together a group of Japanese women artists is being held at the Cité internationale des arts where all the participating artists completed a residency.

“Future Mythology Diaries” illustrates the connections that exist between everyday life and the future. While some works are concerned with exchanges between human beings and nature, other projects focus on social and historical issues by questioning traces and memories. Eight women, who are now based in diverse European cities, present a wide variety of pieces: contemporary ceramics, weavings, paintings, installations, photographs and films.

Each space corresponds to a sentence in the artist's diary that is on display. This encourages the visitor to share its author's point of view more closely while inviting them to think about and imagine the future.

JOSHIBI UNIVERSITY OF ART AND DESIGN & THE CITÉ INTERNATIONALE DES ARTS

At a time when only men had access to higher education in Japan, Joshibi University was founded in 1900 on the principle of empowering women's independence through the arts and improving their social status by enabling them to become teachers in this domain. Thanks to its Suginami campus, located near Shinjuku in the centre of Tokyo, and the vast Sagamihara campus in Kanagawa, just south of Tokyo, having several ateliers where students can develop their own creative expression, the institution has nurtured many talents, including graphic designers, artists and teachers.

Each year, a graduate student is awarded the Joshibi Paris Prize, which gives them the opportunity to have a residency at the Cité internationale des arts in France. The prize is awarded under the patronage of the Fumiko Ōmura Foundation, which was established in 1999 by Dr Satoshi Ōmura, a biochemist laureate of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, in order to support women artists. Thanks to new substances discovered from micro-organisms present in the soil, Dr Ōmura has cured countless patients. The name of the foundation pays tribute to his wife, Fumiko. During the 'Future Mythology Diaries' exhibition, videos showing the works of previous winners of the prize, who are pursuing their careers in Japan, will be projected, as well as interviews with professors of Joshibi University.

Inaugurated in 1965 through the initiative of Mr and Mrs Brunau, the Cité internationale des arts is a public utility-recognised foundation that receives over 300 artists of all disciplines from all over the world on residences each month through partnerships with 135 French and international organisations. As a meeting space that fosters dialogue between cultures, it sees the artists meeting professionals on two complementary sites, one in the Marais, the other in Montmartre.
