Mission Statement We, the family of St. Sebastian Parish,
are a stewardship parish, sharing God’s Gifts. We are the hands and feet
of Christ on Earth. In union with the Universal Roman Catholic Church, we
endeavor to become a prayerful and unified community deeply committed to Jesus Christ, and loving service in His
name. We hope to be a welcoming, caring and friendly Parish Family,
wherein the gifts and talents of all - young and old - are recognized,
nurtured and used to build the Kingdom of God in the world.

Dear Family,
We begin Lent on Wednesday. We will cele-brate Mass at 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and dis-tribute ashes a er each of the celebra ons. We will also have some small envelopes with ashes which you may bring home for folk who are una-ble to a end Mass through illness, etc.
The person who marks your forehead with the ashes challenges us gently by saying, “Repent and believe in the gospel.” Another longstanding op-
on is, “Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
I like the first op on be er because at this stage of my life, I want to think about preparing to meet the Lord, not becoming a pile of dust. A er all, ‘gospel’ means ‘good news.’ The good news is that I am loved by God.
In the gospel, God, through Jesus, is constant-ly sending an invita on of love. For us on Ash Wednesday, the invita on is reflected in the words, “Repent and believe in the gospel.”
I want to try, and respond with, “I repent of the things that took my a en on away from Your invita on, Your ‘Good News.’” It boils down to, “I’m really sorry.” It’s amazing how many mes I’ve said that and amazing how many mes the Lord has listened. Otherwise I would be ash, ‘toast’ as the saying goes.
If a smudge of ash on your forehead will re-mind me that I need to get my act together, then I’ll look for your smudge… either that, or stand in front of a mirror all day and stare at my own smudge. (Somehow that’s a Plan B that hasn’t got a snowball’s chance in the Sahara.)
We had a pleasant surprise in the last couple of weeks. Our original Lenten Parish Mission leader was unavailable. But the Lord taketh and the Lord giveth. Happily, Father Richard Sudlik, OMI, can come to us the
week before Palm Sunday. It’s going to be a great lead-in to Holy Week. He will preach all the Mass-es on March 17-18 and then we will have morning and evening sessions Monday thru Wednesday Mar. 19-21.
When the Oblates of Mary Immaculate had missions in our Archdiocese, Father Sudlik had some assignments here, so he’s no stranger to South Florida. We’ll put his bio in the bulle n in a couple of weeks.
In the mean me, you need to begin to pray for him now, even as we pray for each other, that our parish mission will preserve us as special people, marked not only by ashes, but marked by a faith rooted in love.
Shi ing gears a li le bit, in the next couple of weeks you will begin to no ce a transforma on in the area of the northeast corner of the main sanc-tuary building. (You know I mean church, but I hope someday to convince everyone that people are church, and buildings are buildings.)
Anyway, thanks to Chris O’Connor we will have a prayer garden dedicated to his parents, Pat and Nelly O’Connor. A striking mosaic of Our Lady, Star of the Sea will be the focal point. The mosaic is already completed in the wonderful studio of Conrad Pickel in Vero Beach and awaits our call for installa on. Conrad’s son Paul, con nues his fa-ther’s ar s c excellence.
I know Chris has wanted this to happen quicker than it has thus far, but I think all the pieces are in place. We’ve picked a dedica on date, but I am too Irish to announce the date un l three weeks a er it has happened, just to make sure. Pray for our contractor Alex Rodriguez as well as Rob McIn-
re, the architect.
In Jesus,

“When Did I feed you, Lord?” “When you fed my poor and hungry,” replied the Lord. While on earth, Jesus fed thousands as he multiplied the loaves and the fishes. Let us multiply our donation of non-perishable food and hygiene
items each week. Grocery carts are at the church doors for your donations.
THANK YOU to everyone who gen-erously made a commitment to the 2018 Archbishop’s Charities and De-velopment Drive (ABCD). To date, 97 of our 590 parish fami-lies have responded. However, we need the support of all members of St. Sebastian if we are to be successful in reaching our parish goal of $105,776. - as of this printing we are around 38% there. ABCD is our opportunity to unite together as one Catholic family, to answer Jesus’ call to help our brothers and sisters in their time of need- even a small gift can make a big differ-ence. Whether your gift is $50, $365, $500 or even $1,000, it is truly impactful and appreci-ated. If you have not yet responded to the 2018 ABCD, please consider making a gift—a gift from the heart—by using the pledge enve-lopes available in the pews or by making a gift online at www.isupportabcd.org. Thank you for all that you do and the spirit in which you do it! God bless you!
YOU ARE INVITED... On Thursdays after Mass we meet together over coffee, sharing God’s word, our love of Jesus, and our love for each other. Please join us for this informal hour. We are now in the book of Proverbs.
