Estimados Hermanos y Amigos de San Juan Bautista,

Con estas palabras: “Arrepiéntansey crean en el Evangelio,” el pasadomiércoles comenzamos la temporadasanta de Cuaresma,. Estas palabrasprovienen de los labios de Jesús en elEvangelio de hoy. Estas mismaspalabras fueron usadas con laimposición de las cenizas en sus frentes.¿Qué significan?

Arrepentirse conlleva reconocer elpecado, y rechazarlo volviendo alSEÑOR. El arrepentimiento, por lotanto, nos mueve más cerca del SEÑORy lejos del pecado y de todo lo que escontrario a la voluntad de Dios. El arrepentimientomuchas veces resulta difícil, porque el pecado puede estararraigado en nuestras vidas en hábitos y actitudespecaminosos. Cambiarlos no es fácil, pero es necesariopara una renovación en nuestra relación con Dios.

La motivación de arrepentimiento, para volver a Diosy abandonar nuestro orgullo y rebeldía, proviene delEvangelio. La Buena Nueva del gran amor de Dios pornosotros, su misericordia que tiene el poder detransformarnos y nuestra capacidad para responder nosmotivan a regresar al SEÑOR. Sin esta inspiración,parecería inútil cambiar. Creer en el Evangelio nos damucha esperanza.

El gozo del leproso curado el domingo pasado debeinspirarnos a ser discípulos intencionales, porque cuandonos encontramos con el SEÑOR y le permitimos que nostransforme, el gozo de este encuentro nos impulsa acompartirlo con todos. La invitación, “¿Serás Mi...Discípulo Verdadero?” nos invita a creer de todocorazón en el Evangelio de Jesucristo y permitir que unarelación personal con él crezca más profundamente, másampliamente y más omnipresente en nuestras vidas.

Sin embargo, el pecado y la culpa pueden obstaculizaro distraernos de aceptar esta invitación. En este primerdomingo de Cuaresma, nos encontramos con el Señor quefue tentado por Satanás en el desierto. Al igual que Cristo,cuando somos guiados por el Espíritu y conectados por elamor del Padre, la tentación no es un problema o unaprueba, sino más bien una oportunidad de elegir a Dios yhacer su santa voluntad. Es una oportunidad para utilizarnuestro poder de libre albedrío para el bien.

Esta primera semana de la Cuaresma es paraayudarnos a reconocer lo que nos distrae, dificulta, o nosimpide y, por lo tanto, limita nuestra respuesta amorosa aDios y al prójimo.

Dear People and Friends of San Juan Bautista,

With these words,“Repent & Believe in theGospel,” we began the holyseason of Lent lastWednesday. These wordscome from the lips of Jesusin our gospel today. Thesesame words were used withthe imposition of ashes onour foreheads. What do theymean?

Repenting entails recognizingsin, rejecting it, and turningback to the LORD.

Repentance, therefore, moves us away from sin and allthat is contrary to God’s will and closer to the LORD.Repentance often times proves to be difficult, because sincan be entrenched in our lives in sinful habits andattitudes. Changing them is not easy, but necessary for arenewal in our relationship with God.

The motivation to repent, to turn back to God andforsake our prideful, rebellious ways springs from theGospel. The Good News of God’s great love for us, hismercy that has the power to transform us and our abilityto respond motivate us to turn back to the LORD. Withoutthis inspiration, changing would seem futile. Believing inthe Gospel gives us great Hope.

The joy of the healed leper last Sunday shouldinspire us to be Intentional Disciples, for when weencounter the LORD and we allow him to transform us,the joy of this encounter impels us to share him witheveryone. The invitation, “Will You Be My... IntentionalDisciple?” invites us to believe whole-heartedly in theGospel of Jesus Christ and allow a personal relationshipwith him to grow more deeply, more broadly and morepervasively in our lives.

Yet sin and guilt can hinder or distract us fromaccepting this invitation. On this First Sunday of Lent, weencounter the Lord being tempted by Satan in the desert.Like Christ, when we are led by the Spirit and aregrounded in the Father’s love, temptation is not so much aproblem or a test, but rather an opportunity to choose Godand his holy will. It is a chance to use our power of freewill for good.

Let us beseech the Lord this first week of Lent tohelp us recognize what is distracting, hindering, orimpeding us and, therefore, limiting our loving responseto God and neighbor.

Abstente de comer carne el Miércoles de Ceniza y todoslos Viernes de Cuaresma. Esto es un requisito para todoslos mayores de 14 años.

Ayuna el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo,comiendo solo una comida al día, 2 comidas pequeñaspara mantener la fuerza y no comer entremedio de lascomidas. Esto es un requisito para todos los Católicosde 18-60 años.

Deja de comer algo que normalmente te gusta mucho —por ejemplo dulces, postres, soda, licor, bocadillosentremedio de las comidas.

Absténgase de algunas actividades o pasatiempos, comover televisor, jugar juegos de computadora, “Gameboy”o “Playstation”, Facebook, ir al teatro, o ir a comer enlos restaurantes.

Brinda apoyo financiero a un centro caritativo. Participa en la Campaña Anual del Apelo Cuaresmal. Brinda un tiempo a algún servicio de la parroquia. Brinda tu servicio en la Cena para la

comunidad / 9 de Marzo o en la Tienda SJB Visita los enfermos en el hospital, casas de

ancianos, o en sus hogares. Invita a otras personas a venir a Misa

contigo.

PRAYER

What forms of prayer will we use this Lent to guideus closer to God?

Attend daily Mass at San Juan Bautista or anotherCatholic parish:

Spend time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacramentespecially during Adoration on Friday 7:30AM—7:00 PM

Pray the Rosary daily as a family Come each Friday Holy Hour at 6:00 PM and to the

Stations of the Cross at 7:00 PM Choose one of the Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, or

John—and read a short portion daily. Set aside 15 minutes for silent, reflective prayer—just

you and the Lord. Go to Confession at least one time during Lent. Attend the parish Penance Service with confessions on

Thursday, March 22nd at 7:00 PM.

FASTING

In addition to the days of fast and abstinencerequired by the Church, what else will we sacrificeduring Lent?

Abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all theFridays of Lent. This is required of all Catholics 14 yearsof age and older.

Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, by eating onlyone meal, 2 smaller meals to maintain strength, and noeating between meals. This is required of all Catholicsbetween the ages of 18-60 years.

Give up some element from your diet that you like—forinstance, candy, dessert, soda, alcohol, snacking betweenmeals.

Refrain from certain activities or hobbies, like watchingtelevision, playing computer games, Gameboy orPlaystation, Facebook, going to the movies or out to eatat restaurants.

Participate in the Bishop’s Annual Lenten Appeal Volunteer for some service in the parish Volunteer your service at the Community Meal/March 9th

BAUTIZOSENCUARESMA - Baptisms in Lent

Por favor, recuerde que el don másimportante que pueden dar a sus hijosdespués del don de la vida es el don del amorde Dios y la gracia en el Sacramento delBautismo. Por favor, no espere meses o unaño o dos para bautizar a sus hijos. ElBautismo debe celebrarse dentro de lasprimera semanas del nacimiento de su bebé. Para preparar a lospadres y padrinos, la parroquia provee 2 clases separadas. Please remember that the most important gift you can giveyour child after the gift of life is the gift of God's love and gracein the Sacrament of Baptism. Please do not wait months or ayear or two to baptize your child. Baptism should be celebratedwithin weeks of your baby's birth. To prepare parents andgodparents, the parish provides 2 separate classes. The nextparent class will be Feb. 9th. These classes may be attendedeven before the baby is born. For registration or moreinformation visit the office during the week. During Lent, therewill be no regularly scheduled baptisms on the 2nd and 4thSaturdays. Any newborn can be baptized during Lent by arranging adate with Fr. Wolfe. The next scheduled Baptisms will be celebrated onEaster Sunday, April 1st, as well as on Saturday, April 14th.
