Discovery Day T-shirt Competition Your Discovery Day Team is busy planning a fun and educational day for the students at Prairieview. To jumpstart Discovery Day, the PTO is offering the students a chance to design the annual Discovery Day T-shirt. If your child loves to draw, sketch, cartoon, etc. this is a great opportunity for him or her to show some school spirit by designing a shirt that could possibly be featured on this year's shirt! Students can submit artwork from Tuesday, February 21st – Monday, February 27th. Their work will be displayed (without names) in the lounge and teachers will choose three finalists. The Prairieview students will then use box tops to vote on a final winner. The winning t-shirt designer will be announced on Monday, March 12th and we will then follow this announcement with an opportunity for students to buy their very own student-drawn Discovery Day 2012 T-shirt. We hope for great participation from many young artists and wish good luck, in advance, to everyone participating. Please look for forms, later this month, in your child's backpack or your email announcing the start of the annual 'Design the Discovery Day T-Shirt' Contest'. Please see the attached flyer for more details!

YOUR DESIGN HERE!!

We need your help!

The Prairieview staff, in conjunction with our PTO, would like to build an outdoor classroom. We want to create an inviting space outside for students to learn from and utilize on a daily basis. If you have experience or particular talents that would aid our school community in the development of this space and would like to share that experience or talent, please contact Mr. Murray at [email protected] or 847.543.4230. Discovery Day excitement is growing as we search for a student, in grades K-4, who will be the next T-shirt

designer.

If you are interested, contest responsibilities include: 1. Designing and drawing a simple design, which will be

printed in black and white, on this year’s Discovery Day T-Shirt.

2. Making sure your drawing is no larger than 8.5 x 11. 3. Placing your name, grade and teacher’s name on the

BACK of the submitted artwork.

Contest begins February 21st and all entries are due

Monday, February 27th.

Once entries are submitted, teachers will choose three finalists. Then all PV students will select the top design by

voting with Box Tops the week of March 5th- 9th. The winner will be announced on Monday, March 12th. The grand prize artist will be featured on this year’s Discovery Day T-shirt and receive a free shirt. The runners up will have their artwork displayed throughout the school for Discovery Day.

Good Luck!

CARING & PATIENCE are our lifeskills for FEBRUARY!

This charming crew came to life when a pomegranate juice bottle reminded Family Fun crafter Kimberly Stoney of a certain frosty fellow.

Instructions: 1. To make a snowman, wash and dry a squat plastic jar or bottle (along with the

pomegranate juice bottle, we used nut and spice jars, a squeezable jelly bottle and an 8-ounce apple juice bottle)

2. With scissors or a craft knife, cut away the container’s bottom to accommodate a battery-operated tea light (an adult’s job).

3. Mix water and white glue to a creamy consistency, then brush it over the jar. Attach white tissue paper scraps and brush with another layer of the diluted glue. In the same way, cover the lid with black tissue paper scraps. Let the bottle and lid dry.

4. For the eyes and mouth, glue on small black beads, sequins or buttons. For the nose, brush glue over a cone of orange tissue paper, let it dry, and then adhere it.

5. Tie on a ribbon scarf and place your man over the tea light. Tips: Cones made from printer paper form a cool recycled forest. Simply roll paper into cone shapes, tape to secure, and trim the bottoms as needed so that they stand level.
