They think  primarily that man is  just body and mind, or body and soul; but man is spirit, soul, and body. Not only can he not know himself, but he cannot know God. In  the scr ip tu re we have a

glimpse  of the three-fold man—

spiri t, soul, and body. He re we

are  going  to talk about the spirit

of   man, which is the real man,

the inward man.

I  notice when folks quote this,

that  i s a dead  g ive  away  that

than  they are spirit conscious.

I  notice  that  in religious maga

dom  wil l  the writer get  this

ver se  of scr ipt ure right whenquoting it.  They  wil l  nearly al

ways  put body first.

God  doesn't put body first. Paul

said, " I pra y God your  whole

spir it and soul ana body be

preserved blameless  unto  the

coming  of the  Lord  uesusChri st ." Man was oi ualc-d in

the image and the likeness of

God.  Because he is cr ea te d in.

the image and likeness of God ,

then  man is in the same classwith God.

I  think   it would be  v e r y  inter

the li keness and the im ag e of

making  o i ^ i - v a l i o n  of the fact

that  the spirit of man is a man.

Paul said about the same tiling,

but ho used different language.

For  instance, in II Corinth ians

4:16 he sai d, "Though the out

ward  man perish (the margin

reads 'is  decay ing1

) ,  yet the

inward man is ren ewe d day by

day . 8  T h er e 's an outward man,

and ther e is an inw ard man. Th e

out ward man is the body , the

inward man is a spirit man,

made in the likeness and image

of   God.

Physchology  has called  this

inward  man of the  heart  a  sub

conscious mind.  They  have re

cognized  that  conscience is the

v o ic e  f r om  an inward persona l i ty .  In I Cori nth ians 2:14 we

rea d, "But the  natural  man re -

ce ive th  not the things of the

Spir it of God : for they a re  f oo l

ishness  unto  him : neith er can

he know th em, b ecau se they ar e

natural  man cannot know him

self.

T h e r e  is no psych iatr ist or psy

chologis t  that rea lly knows him

self    if he hasn't  been born again.They  think  p r i mar i l y that  man is

ju st  body and mind, or body and

soul; but man is spirit, soul,

and body. Not only can he not

know  him sel f, but he cannot

know  God. Conseque ntly the

student  of   psychology, unless he

has re cei ve d eternal  l ife,  cannot

understand  hi ms elf much les s

understand  somebo dy el se . He

can't  do it.

T h i s  subconsc ious mind , if you

want to call it  that,  is the real

man. That is what Pe te r is ca ll

heart ,"  and what Paul i s cal lin g

"the inw ard man. " Thi s man is

the r ea l you . He is a sp ir it man,

and  that  is the reason he can

never  die. Man can die physi

cally,  but when the  Bib le  speaks

of   spiritual death it doesn'tmean  that  a per son ce as es to

exist.

Man  can never cease to exist

spir itua lly. He goe s on  l iving

when he is dead phy si ca ll y. A

spirit  can't  die. We see  that  all

through the  B ib le .  In the Old

Test ame nt when it ca me ti me

for  the peop le of God to di e,

the  Word  says dial they were

gathered  unto  their fathers. We.

know  that  in the teaching of the

Old  Tes tam ent , they would go

down  into Hades.

Hades moans the place of de

parted spirits. We  t ransla te  it

hell,  but there is more  than one

word  translated  hell. Spirits

don't die, tUoy just  depart.  Jesus

Himself    told us a st ory, and of

cou rse it is an Old Te st am en t

story because  -Jesus  was min

ist eri ng as a prophet  under  the

old  covenant.

In  Luke 10:19-22,  Jesus  said,

"There  was a certain rich man,

which  was clothed in purple and

fine  linen, and faired  sumptu

ously  every  day: and there was

a certa in beg gar named  L a z a

rus,, which was laid at his gate,

full  of so re s, and des iri ng to be

fed  with the crumbs which  fell

from  the rich  man's  table:

moreover  the dogs came andlicked  his so re s. And it ca me to

pass,  that  the beggar died..."

It  is talking about phy sic al

death—he died phy sic all y.

It  goes on to say,  " . . .And  was

ca rri ed by the angels into Ab ra

ham's  bosom." Many have tried

to make  this  a par abl e, say ing

that  Laz aru s mean s one thing,

and the ri ch man means the

Jews, and so on.  Jesus  Christ

said, '"There was a certaini i c h  man." I  be l ieve  He tol d the

truth  about it. Th e  word

"certain" means "for  sure."

Laz aru s died and the ang els

ca rri ed him away—not his body,

but him . What I am try in g to

impress on you is this,  this

hidden man of the  heart ,  thisinward man.  this  spirit man, is

the rea l y ou. lie  l ives  forever.

Laz arus was ca rr ie d by the

angels. Wh er e did they ca rr y

him? To the p lac e o f dep aiv . J

spir its, or I iades. Th e y  couldn't

have car ri ed his tody, be cause

angels are spir its themselves.

Physical  men could ca rr y the

body,  but physical men couldn't

carry the spirit. The angels

could  c a r r /    the spirit becausem e  ) 11  r 'l y c rr i ed

When  i o s u s w a s  on the mount

of   transfiguration, Pe te r, Ja

mes, and  John  were there with

Him.  M o s e s  and  E1 ijah appe ared

the re and talked to Hi m. Mo se s

had been dead for a numb er of

ye ar s, and som e people  think

that  God raised Moses  from  the

dead physically. The 15thchap

ter of I Corin thian s  wi l l  let

you  know  that  He didn't. Here

it is talk ing about phy sic al

re su rre ct io n, and if you  will

read  that  c losely  you  wi l l  find

that  Jesus  was the firs t one that

was ever physically  resur

rected.

If   God had rais ed Mo se s  from

the d ead , ho would have died

again anyhow. Many peo ple a re

raised  from  the dead, but they

go  ahead and die later. So

Moses  w a s n ' t  physically  resur

rected  from  the dea d. Yet he

appeared there and talked to

Jesus.  Elij ah a ppea red too. He

had gone up in  .t  whirlwind and

a chariot o*  fi.ro,  but the  Biblesays Moses died.

Again,  in the Old Tes tam ent

the  Bible fe lls  us  that  God per

mitt ed the prophe t Sam uel to

come  up out of Ha des. We know,

of   course,  that  Saul had gone to

the witch of Endor to try to

contact Sam uel' s spi rit. The sewitches  are like the spiri tist s

today.  Th e y  cl ai m to contact the

spi ri ts of those who have died.

If   you  wi l l  re ad the sto ry

closely ,  you  w i l l  find  that  the

witch  of Endor did not bring

Samuel up, for when Samuel

ca me up she was aston ished and

fell  o v e r  backwards.

If   you have been used to talking

to  sp iri ts , you wouldn' t be as tonis hed bec aus e one of them

ca me up. What happened was

that  she had been in contact

with  ev i l  spir i ts  that  would

know  and tell her things about

the departed. But here God  just

overruled  the situation. That is

the only  log ica l  explanation  that

you  can find.

Go d  overruled the situation and

let  Samuel co me up. It was

the spi rit , the r ea l man. Hisbody  had been b uri ed and was in

the tomb ; but God let his sp ir it

come  up out of Hades, the place

of   departed spirits. He  gave  a

l i t t le  word  to Saul  that  God

wasn't  going  to  hear  him be

cause  he had backslid and was

out of   fellowship.

He  also  gave  him the  word  that

by  that  time the next day Saul

and his  sons  would be with him.I  don't know whether  that  means

he would be with Samuel in the

part  of Hades call ed Abr ah am' s

bosom,  or whether he meant

they would  just  be in the place

of   departed spir its.  Which  side

they w er e in I don't know. I' m

not the judge. But  that  time the

next day they we re the re,

weren't they?

If   one man was sti ll  a l ive  in

spiri t after he died physi call y,then  all men are. Isn't  that

right? So  then  you see, the Old

Testament  substantiates  the

story  that Jesus  gave  of the

beggar ,  that  when he died phy

sical ly- the  angels carried him

away.  Did you noti ce in sp eak -

ing of Samuelup? It  wasn't

was him.

What I am try ing to  establish

with you is the reality of the

inward man; the fact  that  the

inward man i s an  eternal  man;

the fact  that  the  spi r i t  world is

just  as real a world as  this

world;  the fact  that  heaven is

just  as re al a pla ce as the cit y

you  l ive  in;  that  departed  saints

of   God go to heaven and  l ivethere  with  Jesus  just  as  much

as 3'ou  l ive  here;  that  they are

conscio us of the fact  that  they

are  there  just  as  much  as you
