Roxby Downs and Olympic Dam have lost the title of wealthiest postcode in South Australia despite a nearly $8000

rise in average income. � e Australian Taxation Offi ce recently re-

leased its most recent statistics on the subject, with the 2013/14 fi gures showing that the local 5725 postcode has dropped from the top of the list to fourth.

� e statistics also indicate a drop in indi-vidual taxpayers in the postcode from 2910 in 2011/12 to 2616 in 2013/14 – a decrease of 294 people.

ATO predictions also suggested a further decrease in next year’s fi ndings, particularly

with job cuts at BHP Billiton Olympic Dam having occurred in 2014/15.

Average income for the 5725 postcode in-creased from $81,652 in 2011/12 to $89,042 in 2013/14. However, with a rise of around $18,000, the Walkerville area took out the top spot for 2013/14.

� e area – which includes Vale Park, Col-linswood, Gilberton, Medindie and Walker-ville – is home to around 5792 taxpayers.

Oakbank was the biggest mover up the list, jumping a massive 43 spots to take out second place.

last week gathered to mark the recent installation of a plaque next to the 2013 Red eAR� Festival mural.

Funded by the forum, the plaque provides details about the mural’s signifi cance, along with a special thanks to everyone involved.

Forum chair Rachel Young said the plaque’s installation meant the project could now be con-sidered fi nalised.

The mural is located on an outside wall of the

roxbylink auditorium. It consists of tiles created by locals aged between eight months and 80 years with help from ceramic artist Gus Clutterbuck.

A $10,000 grant from Country Arts SA allowed the Arts and Culture Fo-rum to invite Mr Clutter-buck to Roxby Downs.

He conducted work-shops and helped create the mural as part of the 2013 Red eAR� Festival’s major project.

Mrs Young said the pro-ject had tied in well with the Roxby Downs 25th anniversary celebrations being held at the time.

“Gus asked partici-pants to create an image and a word that had a connection to their life in

Roxby Downs,” she said.Mrs Young said locals

made illustrations on more than 500 tiles that were then fired using a kiln in the Roxby Downs Area School art room.

“It was truly a commu-nity eff ort,” she said.

� e tiles were then sent to the Jam Factory in Ad-elaide to be glazed before being transported back to Roxby and installed on the auditorium wall by Roxby Council in Octo-ber 2013.

“� e mural has brought a lot of joy to people,” Mrs Young said.

“I think each time you look at it, you still find something new.”

The Queen of the Desert Festival scheduled for March 23-26 has had to be cancelled because of heavy rain along the

Oodnadatta Track.It is set to be rescheduled for August after or-

ganisers were last week forced to call off the four-day trip from Marree to Coober Pedy.

All roads north of William Creek and into Coober Pedy from the Oodnadatta Track had to be closed last week in light of heavy downpours across the region.

Pastoralists in the area advised organisers that there was little to no chance of the roads being reopened in time for the festival.

Further details about preparations for the Au-gust event will be provided in an upcoming edi-tion of � e Monitor.

The Andamooka Youth Group will this weekend host a ‘pie in your face’ fundraiser towards

rebuilding schools damaged by Cyclone Winston in Fiji.

It will take place as part of this Sat-urday’s Andamooka Easter Markets, which will include plaster painting, a

jumping castle and use of the splash pad.

� e markets are set to kick off at 9am and will include a variety of stalls, food, live music and competitions.

As of last Friday limited spots w ere still available at the market, with inter-ested parties urged to contact Matilda Moylan-Blaikie on 0427 139 188.

Police are investigating the theft of the dark grey dual-axle trailer between 10pm and 11.20pm that evening.

Downs Community Youth Centre for its offi cial opening on the weekend.

� e centre includes a commercial kitchen, a gaming area, air hockey and pool tables and up-graded shower and toilet facilities.

Saturday’s opening allowed locals to check out the building while also participating in a photo booth, Earth Hour colouring activities and a ‘kids kitchen’ involving the preparation of sweet treats to enjoy.

Healthy snacks and beverages were also served up to attendees, who took the opportu-nity to test out some of the centre’s recreational spaces.

Roxby Council over-saw the building up-grades after first con-sulting with groups including the Roxby Youth Advisory Com-mittee (YAC) and Rox-by Downs Multicultural Forum.

Children and youth community projects of-fi cer Kirsten Falt said the YAC had done a “won-derful” job in working

with council since the need for upgrades to the centre was highlighted during the Future Roxby! consultations in 2014.

Ms Falt said the YAC had spoken to council about what the centre would look and feel like, what it would include and what young people would do there.

She said the commit-tee also raised the point of how the space could be shared with other community members.

“During these conver-sations with the YAC, it very quickly became clear that a youth space was not just about young people having a place to go,” she said.

“It was about young people having a place to be. It was about continuous flexibility, about creating a space where anything could happen and each person could be every part of themselves.”

Ms Falt said YAC members were “ex-tremely excited” about the open day and the potential that the Com-munity Youth Centre off ered.

“� ey look forward to sharing this space with the community and watching it transform over the weeks, months and years to come,” she said.

Roxby Council admin-istrator Bill Boehm also spoke on the day and acknowledged the large turnout for the event.

“I am really excited to be here with you to see this project finalised, and I think you will all agree when I say that it looks fantastic and is something of which the entire community can be proud,” he said.

Mr Boehm said he was pleased to see the centre reopened for communi-ty use.

“Importantly we have looked beyond these identified needs, with the facility capable of other uses that we think going forward will ad-vantage local sporting organisations,” he said.

“(� at is) an element that is being considered as part of the current sport and recreation re-view.”

Mr Boehm said the upgrade had eff ectively doubled the centre’s size and had created indoor and outdoor spaces that could be used for a vari-ety of purposes.

He said it had also brought council anoth-er step closer to com-pleting its overarching vision for the area, with the next project be-ing the replacement of the toddler pool with a splash pad.

“� ese works will be-gin as soon as the pool closes very soon, and will be open in time for the new summer season,” he said. “I can’t wait to see it up and running towards the end of the year.”

After a ribbon cutting ceremony, Multicultur-

al Forum representatives closed the formal pro-ceedings by giving pres-entations in their native languages, with fellow forum member Sasha Yantewo providing an English translation.

The Roxby Chinese Restaurant regularly caters towards takeaway

orders, and this is evident when you step inside its restaurant area.

An outdated de cor invokes a sombre mood when you take a seat.

Keen to start eating, we were quickly attended to by the friendly wait staff , and the complimentary prawn crack-ers were a nice touch.

Looking over the selections it seems as though they can satis-fy most tastes and off er a large menu, but unfortunately to-night no dessert was available.

� e entree of chicken and corn soup came out quickly and, while packed full of fl a-vour, the texture was quite gelatinous.

Disappointingly, my dining partner’s fried dim sims were not served up until three to fi ve minutes later, but the ver-dict was that their entree was “delicious”.

For the mains we shared our dishes of sweet and sour pork and chicken and cashews, along with a side of steamed rice.

The rice was served in a

ghastly pink container, but having said that it did keep the rice nicely warm and fl uff y.

� e pork was more sweet than sour, with the sauce a let-down as it did not taste very fresh.

The chicken and cashews were cooked to perfection but a tad too salty.

� e portions were so large that we were able to take two servings home with us.

Overall it was a lacklustre dining experience. However, the food was satisfactory and very cheap, bearing in mind the large portions sizes.

I would recommend sticking to takeaway orders unless you have a large gathering, as the restaurant could easily accom-modate you and your friends.

Roxby Council and roxbylink are currently gearing up for the third annual Football

Federation of SA (FFSA) Regional Round match between the Croydon Kings and West Torrens Birkalla.

� is year’s match will be held on Saturday, April 16, and promises to be a great family night.

Gates open at 4.30pm, there will be an under 12 match at 5pm and a local celebrity soccer game at 6pm.

Two teams of local residents are required, so if you’re keen for a kick (a modifi ed, shorter game will be played), nominate yourself to: [email protected]

After the celebrity match, the big

game will kick off at 7.30pm with our local ‘mini roos’ (junior soccer players) taking to the fi eld at half time.

Food and drinks (provided by local community groups) will be

available on the night, as will enter-tainment for the kids.

The second – and fi nal – round of consultation for Council’s Sport & Recreation Master Plan

will be held on Monday, April 11, and Tuesday, April 12.

� e initial consultation was held in November last year. It included a survey to both the general public and sporting/recreational groups, public information sessions, workshops with local schools and consultations with a variety of sporting and recreational groups.

Feedback and ideas were then taken away by consultants One Eighty Sport & Leisure Solutions (SLS) and includ-ed early options and concepts, which were brought back to Roxby in early February for discussion and consider-ation by Roxby’s Sport & Recreation Steering Committee and impacted community groups.

� e feedback gathered in February was then used to further refi ne the Master Plan concepts, which are now ready for another round of consultation and consideration by our community.

“We’re looking forward to present-ing the draft Master Plan to the Steer-ing Committee on Monday, April 11, and then taking it to the broader com-munity in two sessions on the Tues-day,” One Eighty SLS Director Mark Band said.

“� e involvement and participation by a huge number of sporting and broader community stakeholders has been very good so far, and we hope the Draft is well received and understood when we bring it back in April.”

� e community sessions will be held in Roxby’s Community Youth Centre on Tuesday, April 12, at 10.30am and 7pm, with the Draft Master Plan also available on roxbydowns.com for pub-lic viewing from Monday, April 18.

� e Draft will also be available from the Roxby Downs Community Library and the Council offi ce for viewing.

Final community and sporting stakeholder comment will be required by May 9, after which the Master Plan will be fi nalised in conjunction with Council and funding for the initial round of projects will be sought.

opportunity to holiday out of town in their caravans and camper trailers over the Easter holidays.

Roxby Roadsafe is re-minding motorists to take care on the roads when towing caravans and camper trailers.

The caravan and camping industry is the fastest growing domestic tourism sector in Australia, with more than 500,000 registered caravans and camper trailers in Australia.

� at’s a lot of caravans and camper trailers on our roads, and it is im-portant that road users use best practice when towing caravans and camper trailer and when sharing the roads with other vehicles.

Before setting off on your holiday, it is impor-tant to carry out a few routine safety checks to ensure that your caravan or camper trailer is safe for towing.

Ensure that the tyres are the correct pressure, safety chains are correct-ly connected and weight is evenly distributed in the vehicle.

Roxby holidaymakers typically have to travel long distances to get to their holiday destinations, and are encouraged to take regular breaks.

During rest stops it is important to check your load to ensure that the couplings and chains are still correctly fastened, the side mirrors give a clear view of the road behind the load and all items inside the caravan are still secure and have not come loose.

When towing a cara-van or camper trailer it is important that the driver takes extra precautions when driving:

• Allow for the extra length and width of your caravan when entering or passing traffi c.

• Apply the accelera-tor, brakes and steering smoothly and gently to avoid caravan sway, espe-cially in wet or slippery conditions.

• Avoid applying the towing vehicle’s brakes if the caravan starts to sway or snake.

• W h e n l a r g e r vehicles pass in either direction, slow down to reduce swaying of the caravan caused by wind buff ering.

• Keep to the hard road surface where possible, as the wheels that enter a soft edge may cause the caravan to sway exces-sively with possible loss of control.

• Maintain an in-creased distance be-tween you and the vehi-cle in front to allow for a longer stopping distance.

• Engage a lower gear in both manual and au-tomatic vehicles to in-crease vehicle control and reduce brake strain when travelling downhill.

• Slow down when travelling over bumpy roads or at rail crossings.

• If possible, reverse with a person outside the vehicle watching the rear of the caravan.

• Be aware that tow-ing is more stressful than normal driving and more likely to cause fa-tigue, therefore more rest stops should be planned.

• Use your side and rear view mirrors to give you good visibility along the full length of the tow-ing vehicle on both sides.

Roxby Downs recently competed at the Port Lincoln Volleyball Open in the hopes of repeating

last year’s division two competition win.

However, this time around the side was unable to register a win throughout the carnival – held on Saturday, March 12, and Sunday, March 13 – despite competitive performances.

Roxby Downs Volleyball Association president Simon Parker said a number of new faces in the side had brought a lot of enthusiasm to the games.

“While Roxby wasn’t as successful as last year, the group of people that played were extremely energetic and re-mained consistent throughout the tour-nament,” he said. “� ey also enjoyed the atmosphere of the competition.

“It’s always a good experience, seeing teams from other areas and watching some of the higher level players and teams from Adelaide.”

Roxby Downs came up against sides from Port Augusta, Port Lincoln, Tea Tree Gully and Whyalla.

� e format of the tournament was diff erent this year, with the competi-tion being split into pools rather than divisions.

Roxby Downs took on Port Augusta Heat Yellow in its fi rst pool match on the Saturday.

Despite three close sets the local volleyballers went down 3-0.

� e side endured the same defeat in its second game against Whyalla before taking a set off Tea Tree Gully to only go down 2-1.

Coming into the fi nals on the Sunday, Roxby Downs was in 11th position and had to defeat the 10th-ranked team to progress further.

However, Whyalla proved too strong, again defeating Roxby Downs by two sets to one.

� e competition nevertheless gave coach Scott Phillips an opportunity to try a few diff erent strategies and give some of the juniors exposure to other teams and players.

Training resumed straight after the side’s return, with preparations already beginning for the Port Augusta Open in October.

A lmost all swimmers achieved a personal best (PB) when the Roxby Downs Swimming

Club held its fi nal time trials for the season last � ursday.

Times were recorded for all strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfl y) for diff erent distances ranging from 25m to 100m.

“� ey all did an awesome job and achieved some great PBs,” said club spokesperson Tanya Parker.

Parker said it has been a great season and the PBs demonstrated swimmers’ development over the season.

“It is truly amazing what a child can accomplish in one season,” she said.

Parker said a special mention must go to ‘come and try’ attendee Indi Bowden, who took part in all of the time trial races last week and clocked some impressive times.

� is is the fi nal week of swimming for the 2015/16 season, with the next to kick off in October.

A lap-a-thon was held on Monday to conclude the season – see next week’s edition of � e Monitor for a report and photographs.

Roxby Downs man Mal Hewett set a record for his motorcycle class at the 26th Annual Speed Week recently.

� e Dry Lakes Racers Australia (DLRA) event was held at Lake Gairdner from Mon-day, February 29, to Friday, March 4.

According to the DLRA website, Hewett set a record speed of 185.347mph– or 298.287km/h – in the APS-VG class.

� e record for the motorcycle body class – also known as Special Construction Partial

Streamline Vintage Gasoline – had been open, meaning it was yet to be contested.

Hewett has been competing at Speed Week as part of the Vincent Racing Team for 16 years and has set records across various classes along the way.

“I always had an interest in speed and had visited the Bonneville Salt Flats in America previously,” he said.

“Back then I would strip my road bike, race then return it to the road again – a lot of work.

“Over the years I got sick of this and decid-ed to build a purpose-built race bike using an original frame and front end.

“� e bike evolved over time, and two years ago I built my own frame to be lower and sleeker than the previous. � at put me into the special construction class.”

� e engine on Hewett’s motorcycle uses original 1950 crank cases and heads.

He added fairing this year for better stream-lining and spent months cutting, fi breglassing and sanding the shell.

“It added nearly 20mph to last year’s speed of 166mph,” he said.

“I’m fairly confi dent this record will stand as a national record for quite some time.”

Hewett said perfect conditions – includ-ing reasonable temperatures, light winds and

hard, smooth salt – had also helped him set a fast record.

He said he was grateful for a better organ-ised Speed Week than previous years, along with the addition of a second racing area to relieve congestion on the 16km main track.

Hewett thanked the Roxby locals who have assisted him over the years, especially Shane Toole and his two girls for doing a “great job” on the pai nt and body work.

“Also to my crew who have been going to the salt with me for the last 16 years – I could not have had the success without them,” he added.

The Roxby Downs Dart League season kicked off last Wednesday

night, when Dead Eye Dicks captain Troy Giddens wasted no time in fi nding form.

The skipper was the only player to score 180 during round one and recorded the highest male peg with 100.

Liza Telfer was the highest female peg for the night with 56.

� e top pegs for the male and female categories for the night went to Steven Bell (seven) and Maeve Kendrick (two).

Four Play recorded the high-est team pegs with 21 with new team Smokin’ Darts having the highest team average of 2507.

� e RDDL welcomed four new faces to its committee this year with Darren Hill (pres-ident), Andrew Williamson (vice-president), Liza Telfer (secretary) and Riaan Grob-ler (vice-secretary) all coming on board for the 2016 season.

Wi Pitau, Ryan Reschke and Evelyn Hill were all re-elected as treasurer, match secretary and fundraiser executive re-spectively.

Meanwhile an RDDL spokesperson said a number of minor rule changes will be

implemented this season.The ‘angry dart’ rule has

been included, which means players are now prohibited from throwing a dart at the board after they have busted. If they do that, they will forfeit the leg.

The closed-in shoe rule has also been discussed and it was decided that any form of shoe can be worn while playing in Roxby Downs, but closed-in shoes must be worn when playing in a competition against other leagues.

A new fi nals system has also been adopted. � e top fi ve fi n-ishing teams will play off for the main prize, and the teams from sixth to tenth will battle it out for the shield fi nals.

� is means all teams, ex-cept for the ‘wooden spoon-ers’, stand a chance to play in a fi nal.

It is a system that will hope-fully see more support during the season’s fi nals.

The RDDL spokesperson wished the best of luck to all the teams and all the players for the new year ahead.

The evening of Saturday, March 19, saw the opening round of the Roxby Downs

dirt circuit season.It was sponsored by long-time

Roxby Downs Sporting Car Club supporter Heat Tech Australia.

The round marked the return of local drivers Rob Hall, Ben Cros-by (RD69), Karen Wegner (RD26), and Danny Wegner (RD62) to full-time racing after extended absences.

Regular traveller David Carr (C47) of the Ceduna Dirt Circuit Club also attended the round to match up against local Street Stocks.

Two heats were run per round through the course of the night, with an A, B, C format replacing the traditional grouping of cars by class.

This resulted in the front run-ners of each class (Street Stock, Modified and Open) competing against one another for line hon-ours in Group A, with the balance of field running in a Group B.

The standout drives from the night included Rob Hall (RD18b), Wayne Dempsey (RD42), David Carr (C47) and Duncan Atkins (RD95).

Robby ‘Stickers’ Sutton (RD56) was also among them despite clutch issues threatening to end his shot at the season opener before the evening had even commenced.

Danny Wegner also showed great promise as he progressive-ly adapted to the freshly rebuilt RD62, the SLR5000 Torana being one of the longest campaigned

cars in the club. It formerly car-ried the RD7 plate, but was absent from completion for a number of years.

Danny also provided the crowd with a highlight of the evening when the rears of RD62 broke free under brakes, snapping the car sideways on the entry to the pit corner in Round Three.

His reaction was to drive the corner sideways, yielding one of the closest shaves and best saves we have seen of car versus pit wall for some time.

The night also saw the running of the 20-lap Rick McPhee Memo-rial Trophy, the first of the three perpetual trophies for the season.

This stay of endurance saw the top drivers start off stiff handicaps, with standout drives coming from Logan Hobbs (RD314) and Sutton, who progressively clawed position after positon to push to the front of the field.

By the final laps, with tyres visibly falling off the grip curve and drivers showing alike fatigue, Hobbs held off Sutton to take first

place, with John Dempsey round-ing out the podium in third place.

In addition to the race heats, a number of locals turned out to shred tyres on the burnout pad, and the Roxby Rocket provided rides for the kids during the main break.

Youngsters Brooke Dempsey and Clinton Atkins were also af-forded time between rounds to gain experience on the track in RD42 and RD95 respectively, with both showing bright futures in the sport.

the game to the community but possibly unearthing hidden talent as well.

De Giovanniello said his team had formed a strong relationship with the town during its pre-vious visits.

“It is a happy place for us,” he said.“We had a positive response on the night last

year from the community.“� e hospitality is always fantastic, the ground

was immaculate, we had a good crowd and they put on a barbecue for us afterwards, so all around it was a good weekend.

“� e result helped, but all in all we had a great time.”

Both teams will arrive on Friday, April 15, when they will run a coaching clinic for budding soccer players before holding light training sessions in preparation for the game the following day.

� e FFSA event will take place on the Saturday night, with the gates opening at 4.30pm.

It will include an under 12 game at 5pm, celeb-rity match at 6pm and the main event kicking at 7.30pm.

Roxby Districts and East Roxby will take part in the other Anzac Day weekend game on April 22, with the Frank Corcoran Medal to be presented to the best player on the ground.

“We put out a couple of drafts and have been involved in extensive consultation with the clubs,” said Andryszczak.

“We sent the fi nal draw out the other weekend and all the clubs have been quiet, so it must be pretty good.”

Andryszczak said reigning premiers Roxby Dis-tricts would be the team to beat again in 2016, but East Roxby would be a dark horse after recruiting well during the off season.

The Roxby Downs Junior Football Association took home another competition

win at the second round of Country Championships in Adelaide last weekend.

Bailey Chamberlain, George Clarke, Lachlaun Geraghty, Caleb Turley, Haze Wellgreen, Coby Seery and Jayden Jones were all selected to represent Roxby Downs in the under 16 boys competition.

� ey were undefeated before coming away with the champi-onship by overcoming Broken Hill, 42-37, in the grand fi nal on Sunday.

This follows the under 14 boys team’s grand final win during the first round of the Country Championships on March 12-14.

Meanwhile Roxby’s under 16 girls team also succeeded in their competition on the week-end, when they made it to their division three grand fi nal to go down by only three points.

� e girls had been undefeat-ed before losing to Naracoorte, 46-43.

In the under 12 boys compe-tition, Roxby Heat was unable to make it into the fi nals after losing to Great Southern, 24-51, Murray Bridge, 7-27, and Mil-dura, 23-36, on Saturday.

The under 12 girls also missed out on a fi nals spot de-

spite managing two wins – one against Riverland, 26-20, and another against Barossa Valley, 33-10 – across fi ve games.

The Olympic Dam Cricket Club made it six 40-over premierships in a row after defeating the

Roxby Miners in a heart-sto pping game last Friday night.

A large crowd attended to see the Roxby Districts Cricket Association (RDCA) match go right down to the wire, with the Devils passing the Min-ers’ score of 101 with just one wicket in hand.

It looked like OD was cruising to an-other comfortable victory at 2/82 when Paul Trotta (4/23) and Josh Sheppard (3/30) started the carnage.

Ryan Bennett was the fi rst wicket to fall in the collapse, which saw the Devils lose 7/19.

Captain Seb Holbrook, batting with an extremely sore ankle, edged a two to

bring the scores level, but was bowled two balls later while trying to hit the winning runs.

With the scores level at 9/101 and the momentum right with the Miners, everyone was checking the rule book to see what would happen in the case of a draw.

But a quick single to Lucas Holbrook saw OD reach the required score and take home another premiership.

A quick-fi re 61 from opening bats-man Tom Krieg had set up the chase.

He was only one of two batsmen in the side to pass double fi gures.

Earlier, OD opening bowler Patrick Glover (4/21) ripped through the Min-ers’ top order to have them on their knees.

Backed up by Bennett (3/27), the rest of the OD bowling attack and high-quality fi elding, the Devils were able to restrict Roxby to a modest total of 101.

Grant Aitchison and Rhys Allard were the highest contributors to the Miners’ total with 24 and 21 respectively.

Captain Michael Nelson looked dan-gerous with a couple of lusty blows, but was only able to make a start and was eventually caught for just 12 off the bowling of Bennett.

Krieg was named man of the match for his eff orts with the bat, which guid-ed his side to victory as wickets fell around him.

OD has now won 11 of the past 12 premierships (including 40-overs and T20s) and has only lost one game over the past two seasons.

� e 2015/16 season will wrap up on Friday, April 8, when the RDCA holds its annual presentation night.

A host of awards will include a player and team of the year, along with the highest run scorers and wicket takers for the season.

The introduction of three night games is a noticeable change in the Far North Football League’s (FNFL’s) 2016 draw,

which was fi nalised last week.One of the new night games will take place on

August 5 – the day before the Roxby Downs Races. � e night games will be held on weekends when

only one match is scheduled for Roxby Downs.“We were looking to mix things up (and) try

something diff erent,” said FNFL president Henry Andryszczak. “� e single-header Saturday games weren’t super popular last year, so we wanted to try a few things.

“We are really excited about the Friday night games, as are a lot of other people.”

A split round will also feature in this year’s draw and will comprise of one match on July 9 and an-other on August 5.

� e FNFL will celebrate 30 years this season and will hold an event to mark the occasion during round nine games on June 25.

A father/son charity match will be held between the two se nior matches on the day.

Round 15 will be played on August 13 and will conclude the minor round with the Partington/Zeptner and Troy Gum memorial matches.

� e grand fi nal will take place on September 3, while the Mail Medal count will be held a few weeks prior on August 20.

An FNFL side will again take part in the Miners Cup at Adelaide Oval this season, with the game to be held on May 8 as a curtain raiser to the Port Adelaide vs Brisbane AFL match.

W est Torrens (WT) Birkalla will make its third trip to Roxby

Downs in as many years when it takes on the Croydon Kings in the Football Federation SA (FFSA) Regional Round on Saturday, April 16.

Team members have enjoyed plenty of success in Roxby Downs, including a 4-1 win over the Adelaide Comets last year that kick started their season.

They have already experi-enced a mixed start to the 2016 season with a win, loss and a draw, but coach Steven De Gio-vanniello is hoping the Roxby

Downs game will kick them into gear again.

“We had a fantastic start to our season last year and it all started at the Roxby game,” he said.

“After that trip we won eight or nine in a row, and the lead-up to this year’s game is not too dissimilar.”

� e Croydon Kings are in a similar position to WT Birkalla, with the clubs sitting in eighth and seventh respectively on the PlayStation 4 National Premier League (NPL) table.

� is will be the Kings’ fi rst trip to Roxby Downs, but coach

Mark Brazzale said the side would be treating it as just an-other game.

“I expect the group to treat the game as professionally as we can,” he said.

“What we are going there to do is win the game. � ere are still three points up for grabs, (so) it is not a holiday.

“It is a new environment but it will be business as usual, and that business is to try and get the three points.”

Brazzale said he was excited when he read the draw at the beginning of the season and saw his team had been given

the Roxby Downs game. He said the trip would give

players a good chance to bond and grow in strength as a team while also promoting the sport of soccer in a regional town.

De Giovanniello and Brazzale agreed that bringing NPL games to regional towns was a great in-itiative and one they wanted to see continue.

“� ey don’t get to see a lot of local high-level games, and we are the second level down to the A-League, so hopefully we can go out there and put on a bit of a show,” Brazzale said.
