FROM THE RECTOR 14 September 2014 Dear Friends, The Exultation or Triumph of the Cross is at one and the same time an image of our crucified Lord and a sign of his Easter mystery. It reminds us first of all that Christ merited his glory by undergoing the death of a slave. Before us it puts the prospect of living together with him who, lifted up from the earth, draws all men to himself—provided we bear our cross after him and die with him. The whole history of salvation takes place between two trees: the tree of the forbidden fruit and the tree of life planted in the middle of the garden. If we wish to eat of the tree of life we must embrace the wisdom of God and have no other source of glory save the cross of Christ. With every blessing, Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

Music notes for today’s Family Eucharist: The anthems this morning come from two contemporaneous Tudor composers William Fox (d.1579) and Christopher Tye (c.1505-before 1573). Both were connected with the huge gothic cathedral in Cambridgeshire, England. Tye had been a Lay Clerk at King's College, Cambridge before becoming Magister Choristarum (Master of the Choir) in 1543. Tye was ordained in 1561 and ceased writing music shortly after. William Fox succeed Tye to the post of Organist and Master of the Choristers in 1572 and held the position until his death seven years later. Both of their compositions show them to have primarily concerned with the clear illustration of the text, with much of the text set homophonically (in blocks of chords) with only occasional imitation and polyphony (each part singing different tunes). The voluntary Cantate Domino 'Sing unto God' is a vigorous fanfare by the contemporary Shrewsbury-based composer, Alan Viner.

Amnesty International: Letter writing will be conducted today after each morning service with Neridah Byrne. Letters proposed for sending to the Yemeni Government highlight the way that governments or their “security agents” can arrange for citizens who speak out against official policies to “disappear”. For more information please speak with Neridah today.

Mothers' Union: On Wednesday 17 September our Mothers' Union branch will have Suzanne Reimer as the guest speaker. Suzanne is a Diocesan Vice President responsible for our region. We have some of our group who will be away so are keen to invite any ladies in the parish who would like to attend. Men are also welcome if they would like to come and hear more about the work of MU. The meeting starts at 11.30am after the healing service. Members please bring something to share for lunch. Numbers to Deacon Sandra by Monday Sept 15th. For more information please contact Deacon Sandra or Margaret Winters.

Happy Birthday: Ailene Blakeney (15th), Jean Knight (16th), Pamela Francis (17th), Graeme Couch (18th).

Rosters – Rosters – Rosters!!! With rosters for September to January now being prepared, all who can help are welcome. For BOTH Sunday morning services (8:00am and 10:00am) we REALLY NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS to serve morning tea and to act as sidespersons. As well, the Grounds, Brass and Cleaning rosters are in desperate need of new volunteers. If you can help with any of these tasks please contact Bev (99715529) or [email protected] or leave a message with Beck at the Office.

Op Shop: Congratulations on raising $2,600 on Saturday 6 September and special thanks to all who contributed, especially the extras who came in to help with others being away and Ken Eltham who handled a substantial influx of new goods in the week before Readers: New reading sheets for 21 September to 5 October 2014 are available for collection. If rostered, please take your readings from the lobby table. If your reading sheet has not been put out, please leave a message with the office. Parish Council: Usually held on the third Monday of the month, the Parish Council meeting for September has been deferred to Monday 22 September, 7:30pm, commencing with the Holy Eucharist in the chapel. For more information, please speak with Robyn Couch. Red Cross Blood Service: One in three Australians will need blood, but only one in thirty donates. Donated blood helps cancer patients, people with blood disorders, mothers-to-be and newborn babies, as well as trauma and surgical patients. The Mobile Blood Service is to be at Dee Why Surf Club on 15-18 September (12:30-7:00pm Mon-Tue, and 9:30am-4:00pm Wed-Thu). Please see the notice board in the lobby for information. To donate, first book a time on 13 14 95, then eat a substantial meal and drink three to four glasses of water in the hours before. Take your donor card or photo ID when you visit. St Luke’s Mosman: The Reverend Dr Max Wood is to be inducted as the new Rector of St Luke’s Mosman on the Feast of St Michael and All Angels, 29 September at 7:00pm by The Right Reverend Chris Edwards, Bishop of North Sydney. This is an important occasion in the life of a parish; with St Luke’s being close to Dee Why, and as Reverend Dr Max Wood is coming from outside the Diocese for this appointment, it would be good for St John’s to offer support, both in prayer, and by attendance if possible. RSVP Helen Bell 9969 6910. For more information, please speak with Robyn Couch. The Anglicans Together Dinner on Thursday 25 September, 7:00 for 7:30pm at City Tattersalls Club (Cnr Pitt and Market Streets, Sydney), will feature guest speaker Archbishop Glenn Davies, talking about his vision for the Diocese of Sydney. Cost: $65 pp ($60 conc). Payments with bookings by 18 September to: Anglicans Together, Level 1 St James’ Hall, 169-171 Phillip Street, Sydney, 2000 (telephone 8227 1300). Please see the noticeboard or take a flyer if interested.
