We welcome you... From the Desk of Father Eugene Theisen

Padre’s Pen ~Or "Pastor's Pen"

Two things happened last Friday:1) The Catholic Spirit came with the summer assignments listed and my name was not

on that list. It was, to say the least, a bit deflating.2) I received a call later that afternoon informing me that my letter of appointment as Pastor for St. Wenceslaus Catholic Parish was in the mail (and a pdf copy was sent via email as well). It was, to say the least, re-inflatingI am pleased to announce that I have been named Pastor. Text of the Letter of Appointment follows:

Dear Father Theisen: Thank you for your generous service as parochial administra-tor of The Church of St. Wenceslaus, of New Prague, Minnesota. Given my assessment of both the needs of this Archdiocese as well as your readiness to be named pastor, I am pleased to appoint you as pastor of the same parish, with all the rights, privileges, and obligations of a pastor in accord with the Code of Canon Law and the particular law of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, especially those obligations set forth in canons 519 to 537 of the Code of Canon Law. This appointment is effective July 1, 2020, with a six-year term that will expire June 30, 2026. This appointment may be renewed in accord with the Archdiocesan policy on term limits for pastors. As pastor of this parish, you will continue to be a member of Deanery 7. Please see the enclosed documents for more information to assist you in the transition. Through this assignment, you are called to shepherd a community of the faithful that is an integral part of this local Church. As the pastor of this parish, you will have the full care of souls of the people entrusted to your care, serve as the legal representative of the juridic person of the parish, and fulfill the responsibility of a good householder over parish administra-tion. For this community you are to carry out the functions of teaching, sanctifying, and governing, with the cooperation of other presbyters or deacons and with the assistance of lay members of the Christian faithful, according to the norm of law. Father Theisen, please know that I will be praying that the Lord will bless you in abundance as you begin your pastorate at Saint Wenceslaus. With every good wish, I remain, Most Reverend Bernard A. Hebda Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis

I thank all who have been so supportive of me personally and of St. Wenceslaus, St. John, and St. Scholastica Churches for so many years.

Ad Christum per Mariam,Fr. Theisen

**Fr. Theisen’s Installment Mass will be held Wednesday, July 1st, at 5 pm at St. Wenceslaus Church. The Mass

will be livestreamed ~ Please join us!

~ Today we will learn a bit more about Debbie Gregor, our Direc-tor of Liturgical Music.

What was your role in ministry for our parish prior to COVID-19?Debbie: The same ~ I’m the Director of Liturgical Music

How has that role changed over the last three plus months?Debbie: I’ve changed from directing various choirs and groups of singers for Masses, funerals, and weddings to providing mu-sic for liturgies myself or using a cantor. All rehearsals are cur-rently on hold and planning for Masses is very different.

What blessing have you noticed that has come out of this time in our parish?Debbie: There are many blessings found during this time. We have been taught to slow down and take the time to appreciate the little things. For example, Masses with one family, Father, a cantor, and myself took on a new meaning. Every Mass was even more special and prayerful. The power of the Holy Spirit was often evident when, unknown to him, Father’s homily would directly tie into the following hymn.

What do you miss about the way it used to be?Debbie: I miss my groups and seeing parishioners on a regular basis. Our music groups are like a family. They always support each other. Rehearsals are always filled with laughter. I often joke I should be paying them for weekly therapy. “Singing is like praying twice.” I miss singing and praying with everyone.

I have shared this with my groups and it is food for thought during this time:

Look at Your LoavesGod [always makes] good on his promise to match our gifts, such as they [are], with his own. It is something to remember when the crowd looks too big, the odds too poor, the work too hard, the situation too hopeless. It is something to remember when our own resources look too meager, our efforts too puny, our spirits too low.Continued on Page 4...

PARISH AND AREA NEWS

Continued from Page 3...Stop staring at the crowd; go look at your loaves. How many do you have? Any answer will do. Now follow the leader. Take what you have ~ whatever you have ~ take it into your hands and hold it lightly, very lightly. Then bless it ~ thank God for what you have and make it holy by giving it away from love. Then break it ~ sorry, but you have to tear it up to share it, there is no way to keep it all in one nice piece. And finally, give it ~ to whoever is standing in front of you, beside you ~ spread it around, and never mind that there does not seem to be enough for everyone. It is not up to you to feed the whole crowd, to solve the whole problem, or to fix the whole world. It is up to you just to share what you have got, to feed whatever big or little hunger that happens to be standing right in front of you. The rest will come. Because God is God, the rest will come. For now, for your part, how many loaves have you? Go and see.

Saint Alphonsus Liguori(to pray anytime you are unable to physically participate in Communion)

My Jesus,I believe that You

are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul.Since I cannot at this moment

receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already thereand unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.Amen.

**PLEASE NOTE: There is no need to sign up for Masses at this point. We have removed the sign-ups from our website for the time being.

Laudato Si at Five YearsPope Francis released his encyclical Laudato Si: On Care for our Common Home in June of 2015. Five years later it’s still relevant and worth digging into. This is the first of a series of summaries and reflections on the document.

Pope Francis was not the first pope to show concern for how we are living in this world.• In his first encyclical, St. John Paul II called for a global ecological conversion and coined the term “human ecology.”• In 1971, Pope Paul VI referred to the “tragic consequence” of unchecked human activity on the planet and warned of “the urgent need for a radical change.”• Pope Benedict also sounded the alarm and, before Pope Francis, was actually called the “Green Pope” because of his strongly worded and oft stated concern for environmental responsibility. He issued 10 Commandments for the Environment.• One of the defining themes of Pope Francis’ papacy has been his outspoken critique of our treatment of the planet and each other. He further developed Pope John Paul II’s teaching on human ecology and critiqued economic systems, materialism, and technology and their impacts on the human family and the planet. The name he chose, Francis, reflects his appreciation for the example St. Francis gave us through his love and respect for all of creation.

Why should we care? We care because we have children, grandchildren ~ for future generations. Because we will be called to answer for our own stewardship of the gifts God has given us. Because loving our neighbor includes caring for the least of our brothers and sisters, who are most likely to be impacted by climate change and the uneven distribution of wealth and resources.

Let’s not turn our eyes and attention away from the chal-lenge before us. There are things all of us can do to make a difference. Stay tuned.

FAITH FORMATION ANDYOUTH MINISTRY

A letter to our 2nd graders ~“Go in peace to love and serve the Lord”Where have you heard that recited? If you said you heard it at the end of Mass, you are correct! Those are some tall orders, and if we had to rely on our own strength and power to get the job done….well, it would be tough, if not impossible!

But we don’t. We have a God who loves us and wants to accompany us on our journey. And now you, our dear second graders, have been given the gift of meet-ing Jesus in a whole new way. Jesus wants to be close to each one of us. For us to receive Him through our mouths and into our hearts and souls, well you can’t get much closer than that.

We eat food to make our bodies strong and fit, allowing us to grow and have the strength we need to live our lives. The Eucharist is more important ~ it nourishes us to live as Disciples (followers) of Jesus. It gives us the inner strength we need to grow in our relationship with Jesus and keep us strong to avoid the temptations in life. It helps us to “be the good” in our world and stand up for what is right and of God.

Each day when you wake up, ask God to bless your day. Each time you receive Jesus in Holy Communion, ask Him to open your heart, and give you the strength to do what is right. And each night when you go to bed, review your day and ask Jesus to show you where you needed more of His guidance and where you glowed with the light of Christ inside you.

Jesus is always with you as your friend, savior, and help-er. Turn to Him throughout your day and pray to Him…Jesus, faithful friend, help me to remember that you al-ways walk with me. Give me the inner strength to be your Disciple and share your love with others. Amen.

Congratulations to all our second graders who will be receiving Christ in the Eucharist over the course of the next month. Please keep them and their families in your prayers as they continue to grow in the awareness of Jesus as they “Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.”
