Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights and the Feast of Dedicationcommemorates a victory that took place more than 2000 yearago. In 164 B.C., a band of Hebrews, led by Judah Maccabeerecaptured the temple in Jerusalem from the ruling SyriansTheirmission wasto cleanandpurify their templeas well as to relight the holy temple lamp, called the Menorah. Hannukameans "dedication" andby re-lighting theMenorah they were rededicating the temple to God. The story goes that they only haenough oil for the lamp for one day, but that, miraculously, thlamp burned for eight daysjust enough time to make andconsecrate newoil. This is why Hanukkah lasts foreight days. Aspecial candle holder called a "chanukkiyah" is often used i

Hanukkah celebrations. It has a place for nine candles (eight othem to represent each day of Hanukkah and the ninth is knowas the "shammus" or worker candle). Each day the shammus ilit before sundown and then used to light the correct number ocandles for the day of the festival. At Hannukah, some Jewischildren receive a present for each of the eight nights along witgifts of money. Oily foods areeaten at this time to commemorattheoil used to lightthe menorah.

In many Christian families, Christmas Eve is a night of greacelebration, which often includes big dinners, attending speciachurch services, and visiting friends and family. Christmas EvandChristmas Day tend to be given more importance in Wester

    Christianitythan in EasternChristianity.

Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ over 2000 yearago. No oneknowsthe actualbirthdate of Christ, butin 336A.Dthe Catholic Church declared that it would commemorate Jesusbirth on this date. This date is celebrated in different wayaround the world, with traditions as diverse as the cultures fromwhich they come. Many of the customs associated witChristmas suchas lightingofcandlesandevergreendecorationwere adapted from customs associated with earlier solsticcelebrations.

Professor Maulana Karenga started Kwanzaa in 1966 t

encourage African Americans to celebrate the beauty of theAfrican heritage. The time is celebrated by decorating witAfrican artandfabrics, andwearingAfrican clothing. Each of the7 principles of Kwanzaa, called the Nguzo Saba (Swahili foseven principles) is thought about and celebrated on each othe 7 days of the festival. The Nguzo Saba are: Umoja (unityKuj ichagul ia (self-determination), Uj ima (col lect ivresponsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purposin building the community), Kuumba (creativity), and Iman(faith).
