Hi Key Clubbers!
It’s August already (groan); school is starting in two weeks. I haven’t even had enough time to start on my summer homework! But fortunately, even though summer is almost over, Relay for Life in Pal o Alto is from the 14th and the 15th! :) There will be a few more door-to-doors to ensure that you have the $100 in order to attend.
There were three important events in July: Campbell Relay for Life, the Officer Training Conference, and the International Convention. They were all tons of fun (even though I didn’t go to ICON)! Thanks to all of your efforts, team PengWIN raised around $5,000 to contribute to the American Cancer Society. Hopefully, one day, the cure for cancer will be found! Also on a side note, our Key Club broke 1,000 service hours in this month alone, congratulations! :)
We also have a spate of other events this month and information can be found later in the bulletin and will also arrive through emails. I hope you can all attend and that the rest of your summer is enjoyable!

I hope you all had a great time at the Campbell Relay for Life this past month! :) It was truly one of the most remarkable and amazing events
of the year, where over fifty members took turns walking or running around a track for twenty-four hours to represent the
ongoing battle against cancer. The event began at ten in the morning with a touching Opening Ceremony and a Lap of Survivors to mark the
start of the Relay. Throughout the event, participants not only walked their laps, but also helped out by setting-up for the Luminaria,
supervising the Kids Camp for the little kids, and serving at the Hospitality tent. At night, the Lap of Silence, where over a thousand
participants, all devoted toward the same cause, walked around a dark track lit only by the candles of the Luminaria, was the most touching and
symbolic moment of the event. Besides volunteering, each of our team members also donated $100 to the American Cancer Society: totaling
around a $5,000 contribution from Team PengWIN! By the end of the weekend, the Campbell Relay for Life event had raised over $180,000 for
cancer treatment and awareness!! Thank you EVERYONE who participated in the Relay for making the event so awesome and
successful! :) Even in the blazing heat of the afternoon and cold and darkness of the night, you guys continued walking to support this
great cause. It is your dedication and service that allows us to achieve such amazing results! Be sure to come out to the Palo Alto Relay for Life coming
up next Saturday, August, 14th! —Alex Liu

otc recap
On Saturday, July 24, we Key Clubbers got into our natural element—the water—as we hit the beach for the Region 17 Officer Training Conference. First, here’s a big thank-you to our drivers, who took us all the way down to Watsonville’s Manresa State
Beach. It was great meeting Key Clubbers from all over the whole region: the D34N Aqua Apes, D12E Superheroes, D12S Supervillains, D12W Spartans, and the D43 Monarchs.
In the morning, we rotated through a series of workshops. The first workshop was position specific, and the rest taught us about Key Club and general leadership skills. I personally enjoyed learning about how clubs in other regions are doing.
In the middle of the workshops, we had our July DCM. Thanks to all who showed up and contributed to the whopping 18 members from Paly! Lunch was a little later—it was unfortunately delayed by
an hour, but that just made us all the more ready for it. After lunch, we split up again into our divisions for our sandcastle contest! We saw some pretty sweet sculptures around… but none
were as good as our penguin family sculptures. Thanks again to everyone who came and made this possible. I hope we all had fun and learned a ton! Don’t forget to put that
leadership potential to work! —Jenny Hong,
Treasurer
July was PACKED with awesome events! :) Besides Relay for Life, another big event we've had this past month is the Officer Training Conference (OTC) held at Manresa State Beach! At the event, members and officers from our entire region (Region 17, which is composed of
over 40 clubs!) came to have an AMAZING time learning how to be better officers at a variety of workshops, and needless to say, to have fun on the beach! :) Even though the event was quite far from Palo Alto, we had almost 20 people attend - more than DOUBLING the number of
participants from last year. In fact, two members from our club, Andrew Liu (District Projects Chair) and Pierre Bourbonnais (District Member Recognition Chair) even led workshops to inform us about the new District Project SHINE and different ways of member recognition! At
OTC, there were a variety of workshops including Time Management, Public Speaking, and Communication. After the workshops were over, you could see everyone's anxiety for lunch and sand sculpture contest. Although it was mainly for fun, the sand sculpture contest was
also a fundraiser for Pediatric Trauma Prevention! Each division would build a sand sculpture, and people could make donations in order to vote for whichever one they thought was best. Although our division didn't win, the penguin that we built was pretty awesome! :)

Hey Key Club!
Guess what other big event took place in July? INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION, also known as ICON!!! :D On July 7th-11th, over 2,000 students and advisors met in Memphis, Tennessee to introduce new programs, present awards to outstanding clubs,
conduct the organization's business, attend educational workshops and elect international officers for the upcoming year! Sounds fun right? Who wouldn't want to spend an awesome weekend learning more about Key Club at the higher levels and having fun while
doing so? Unfortunately, however, ICON was the same day as our Campbell Relay for Life, so I was unable to attend :( However, one of our members (and also our District Member Recognition Chair), Pierre Bourbonnais, says this about ICON:
It was interesting! Although I do prefer DCON's size, I truly enjoyed Key Club TV, the look of the program, getting to meet the
international candidates, the ability to go out and buy food on your own will, the CNH Key clubbers, and the free time that DCON simply cannot provide due to its more limited time span." Also, we also elected the new International Board at
ICON! Congratulations to the following people to the side! (Note that Stephenie Yuan is from our District! :D) '
