This chart includes all those who currently hold, or previously held, the title of Chief Digital Officer (CDO) at a major organization for at least one year. Based on our research, the number of CDOs has doubled every year since 2005. Therefore, we conservatively forecast that the number of CDOs will double again in 2014, from 488 in 2013 to around 1,000 at the end of 2014.
* While we expect CDO growth to double in 2014, Gartner projects CDO growth to triple to 1,500, due to a percentage of Chief Information Officers (CIOs) who will take on the title and/or responsibilities of a Chief Digital Officer in 2014.

These numbers radically changed this year (2013), and this will be reflected in the 2014 Talent Map (pub date April 2014). For example, since January 1, 2013, over 200 new CDOs were hired. More than 75 of these were in Europe, including Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
In addition, CDO hires have been reported this year in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Lebanon, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam.
