The State Building Commission approved a $75 million request Thursday to construct a new science center at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

The governor’s capital budget for 2013-2015 recommended the $75 million to construct a new chemistry and biology education facility at UW-Stevens Point. The State Building Commission’s Higher Education Subcommittee supported it March 19, and the full Commission endorsed it March 21.

The 169,165-square-foot building will contain educational labs, lecture halls and research facilities for biology and chemistry. Flexible

room configurations combined with modern technology will support hands-on learning and student research, hallmarks of a UW-Stevens Point education. The building will be constructed with sustainable, energy-conserving design with a goal of earning a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold rating.

The next step in the funding process is the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee review in May. Following its anticipated action, the Legislature will consider the request as part of the full state budget in June. The budget requires the governor’s signature. With funding in the 2013-15 biennium budget, construction could start in spring 2015. A new science building is expected to be completed the spring 2017, said Carl Rasmussen, UW-Stevens Point director of facilities planning.

PIE – UPCOMING EVENTSPartners in Education (PIE) provides employability skill and career awareness development opportunities for students. We accomplish our goals through educational experiences that are interactive and linked with educational institutions, businesses, and community organizations.

This month there are two great events.

The Reality Shop, where students learn to balance a family budget takes place on April 9th at SPASH. As young people make decisions about educational paths, career options and family living, the Reality Shop is designed to provide students with a glimpse of what being an adult is like by showing them how much things cost and how quickly they add up. It is a real game of “life.”

The Career Exploration Day, which links businesses with students to explore career choices and opportunities will be on April 23rd at the Holiday Inn. Career Exploration Day is not a job fair it is a career exploration event where students learn about potential career and educational opportunities. Employers have the opportunity to interact with students

interested in their industries and companies. Employers use this time to outline the qualifications necessary to work in their business and define their expectations for employees.

Contact Bill at [email protected] for more information about either of these events.\\\\\

BUSINESS COUNCIL SUPPORTS SKYWARD IN PORTAGE COUNTYBusiness retention is a critical component of an area’s economic health. Over the past two years, there has been a great deal of concern over Wisconsin’s Statewide Student Information System (SSIS) project and the recent decision to award the contract to an out of state vendor instead of Skyward. A vendor has 10 business days to protest the decision. Skyward has done that and is waiting for a reply.

Based on figures provided by Skyward, the Portage County Business Council worked with Economic Modeling Specialists, Inc. (EMSI) to produce a report that would show the regional economic impact should Skyward not win the Wisconsin SSIS. This report shows the effect on Skyward’s employment numbers for both short-term and long-term and predicts the ripple effect for additional job loss and earnings throughout other industries. The report also shows a scenario for the planned building expansion and additional facility; those numbers would turn negative should Skyward not be awarded the SSIS contract causing further losses in jobs and earnings in our region.

The origins of golf are unclear. However, it is generally accepted that modern golf evolved in Scotland during the middle ages. The game did not find international popularity until the late 19th century when it spread into the United States.

Did you know that our Business on the Green Golf Outing is on its 24th year? I will be with the Portage County Business Council for 16 years in June and I have seen the event grow from one 18-hole course event, to an 18-hole and 9-hole event, to what it is

today – two courses, 18 holes each course, happening simultaneously.

This event is the chief fundraiser of the Portage County Business Council and has been a huge success since its inception. Proceeds from the event fund new programming for businesses across the county. Thanks to our team of Ambassadors, this annual event features great golfing, fun contests on the

holes, and prizes awarded to the top teams and to each hole contest winner. The day doesn’t end with golfing though, everyone gathers after for our 19th Hole Networking Event filled with great food, friendly conversation and raffle prizes to entertain.

Golfers in this years’ outing have the opportunity to choose from two highly rated Wisconsin courses – the Stevens Point Country Club or the Wisconsin River Golf Club. The Stevens Point Country Club, a private course built in 1925, is an 18-hole Bent grass course and home of the 2000 Wisconsin State Open. New to this year’s event, golfers can choose the Wisconsin River Golf Club which is a public golf course set along the picturesque Wisconsin River. The 18-hole course offers rustic river views surrounded by wildlife.

Summer is most anticipated, appreciated and warmly welcomed. So pack up your golf clubs, it’s time to tee up for some Business on the Green – June 3, 2013! Hope to see you there!\\\\\

THE ACTIVE VOICE \\ PORTAGE COUNTY BUSINESS COUNCIL NEWSLETTER06

When asked about her experience in exporting, Denny Rosenthal would tell you, “It’s been an adventure.” As Director of Customer Service and International Sales for The Worth Company, Denny has traveled to Germany, Brussels, Amsterdam, Italy, France, Switzerland, Czech Republic, London and, most recently, China.

As a native Californian, Denny started working for an export firm there in 1988 and facilitated export sales for many companies in the United States, one of which was The Worth Company in Stevens Point. In 1997, she was offered a job to bring exporting in-house so she moved to Wisconsin and brought her talents to The Worth Company who currently serves customers in about 65 foreign countries.

In February, Denny traveled to Beijing where she exhibited Worth products at the 2012 China Fish Exposition. Held at the New China International Exhibition Center, the show attracted approximately 470 exhibitors and 2700 international buyers from 82 countries. The show primarily attracts fishing companies from Asia and Australia. Denny reported that Worth was the only company that had fishing components at the trade show; all

others exhibited whole lures. She proudly describes the quality of Worth split rings as “phenomenal.”

This 25 year veteran in the industry said exports are about 10% of Worth’s business. “In the beginning, we used telex, fax and calls overseas which were very expensive. Now we have email and Skype. Depending on the product, it can be easy to export. It’s not the scary monster it used to be.” She said those interested in exporting can find a lot of information online. There are also contacts at the State of Wisconsin that can help.

Denny’s next trip will be a bit closer to home when she travels to Las Vegas this summer. She reports that the sale of fishing licenses has gone up. In this challenging economy, exporting may be another avenue for businesses to consider. A sunny afternoon spent fishing doesn’t sound bad either.

The Worth Company produces about 1 billion fishing lure components

annually for approximately 3500 lure manufacturers around the

world. These products consist of split rings, beads, lure bodies, spinner

blades, swivels, wire forms, and assembly equipment. The company

employs about 70 skilled workers. Visit www.worthco.com for more

information.

Paul Clasen was recognized for his outstanding commitment to the progress and success of the agri-business industry and for significant contributions to the Portage County agri-business community.

He started his career with Rural Insurance on May 9, 1975. During his 37 years with the company, he enjoyed working with farmers and was comfortable being on various types of farms. His attention to detail and concern for his client’s well-being and financial security was evident. At the time of his retirement, he had 61 farm policies in his book of business. Paul’s community involvement over the years has included dedication to the Agri-Business Committee of the PCBC, serving on the Ag Tour Committee and helping to plan the American Agriculture Appreciation Banquet. He also was a charter member of the Spud Bowl Committee for the UW-Stevens Point, as well as a charter member of the Divine World Lutheran Church, serving on all levels of leadership. Paul is a life member of the VFW, American Legion, Portage County Historical Society and is President of the Central WI Model Railroaders.

“Paul has been an active community leader and is highly respected by many. He is an advocate of the agri-business industry and has shown outstanding commitment and passion towards the agri-business in Portage County.
