MONDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2014SPECIAL HOLSTEIN/HOLSTEIN

CROSS STEER AUCTION STATE AND FEDERAL REPORTING

Compared to two months ago: Not enough comparable sales for an adequate market trend, but a much higher undertone was noted. Trading activity was active on very good buyer demand. The U.S. cattle Inventory report showed a 2% decline in total inventory. It also revealed that beef producers are taking a step towards herd expansion, as heifer retention was up 2%. As a result, demand for Holstein steers is very good with feeders looking to capitalize on record high fat cattle prices and maintain feedlot inventories. The supply consisted of about 89% Holstein steers, 7% Jersey steers and the remaining balance being Holstein heifers. About 20% of the supply weighed over 600 lbs. Next special Holstein feeder cattle sale will be held on Monday March 3, 2014.

Receipts: 2611 Last Week: N/A Year Ago: 2433Compared to last week: No price trend analysis available on feeder steers and heifers due to no recent comparable sales, but a firm undertone was noted. Demand for bred cows was very good, as many producers are trying to rebuild their herds following the last two years of downsizing due to drought conditions. Slaughter cows and bulls traded 8.00 to 10.00 higher compared to a month ago. Slaughter cow numbers are at their typical seasonal lows and the cattle on feed report indicated that producers are beginning to rebuild their herds which will limit supplies further. As a result, buyer demand is very good for slaughter cows and bulls as packers are trying to stay ahead of inventory levels on a tight supply. Trading activity was active on good buyer demand.

Wednesday, February 12, 2014About 400 head of slaughter cows and bulls were represented today. Beef cows and holstein slaughter cows were both lower by $2-3 as compared to last week. Fat holstein cows ranged from the high eighties to mid-ninties. Lean holsteins were steady eighties. Fat beef cows averaged $100.00/Cwt with lean beef cows ranging from 88.00-94.50. Bulls were again higher with some of the most impressive prices we’ve seen, to date. Notable consignments today included extremely well muscled bulls out of grover and hudson and quality black heiferettes out of Utah.
