I recently had my eyes examined and had a prescription change for my eyesight. I had been going to the same eye doctor for many years and thought that it might be time for me to “make a change” and see if another doctor could do a better job for my needs.

I ended up going to the local Walmart Eye Center to see what they could do. I was, at first, afraid that they didn’t have the quality of eye professionals that could help me with my unique eye problems but I thought I’m going to try them anyway. I’m glad I did because the doctor, although he looked like Dougie Howser, was quite good at what he did and gave me a thorough exam.

When I had to choose a new pair of frames I instinctively went to the same style that I had been using over many years. The lady helping me with the frames encouraged me to try a new style and, again, I’m glad I did. She fitted me with a very light weight frame that adds a “new dimension” to my appearance.

This doesn’t have much to do with motorcycles other than I need to see properly in order to ride safely. However, we are now in a new year and all of this got me thinking. It’s time to start new and take some chances. I started with a simple thing like a new pair eyeglasses and I’m going to look for other things that I can change as I go into 2011.

You might want to try the same thing. I know that it is customary to make a New Years Resolution at this time of year and we all know that by the end of the first week we will forget all bout that resolution. So, instead of making a resolution that you won’t keep try this.

When you have an opportunity to try something new ... DO IT! A little change now and then can make life more interesting and rewarding. I made a change years ago when I started to ride a motorcycle and look where I am now.

Today, new eye glasses. Tomorrow, who knows, maybe I’ll shave my beard. Anyway, I want to wish you a very Healthy & Happy New Year! May 2011 be the year that you take on new adventures.

Myerstown Christmas Parade Story & photos submitted by Wm. Eric Callaway

America’s 911 Foundation participated in this year’s annual Christmas parade in Myerstown PA on November 27th.

A local group of riders based out of the Lebanon, PA area have formed the foundation’s very first team of ten members whose goal is to raise $15,000 to benefit first responders. Team Captain, Victoria Kriner-Aversano, organized the event.

Cold days building a float in the tradition of the ten year anniversary of 9/11 culminated in several team members and foundation staff riding in the holiday parade.

Many more events are planned for 2011 leading up to America’s 9/11 Ride which is held the third weekend in August.

For more information, please visit the foundation’s website at www.americas911foundation.org

Eastern PA Toy Run Record Numbers Story & photos submitted by George Aupperlee

The sun shined on Santa and Mrs. Claus as they lead a parade of over 700 people on motorcycles, in Jeeps and classic cars. The 4th Annual Eastern PA Toy Run brought record numbers on Saturday November 7th, 2010.

The Eastern PA Toy Run departed from Classic Harley-Davidson at 10 am and proceeded on a 25 mile scenic ride through Berks County with a State Police escort and a coordinated safety effort from local Fire Police officials. The Toy Run participants filled over 25 barrels of toys which will be distributed between the Marine Corps Toys for Tots and Children’s Home of Reading.

The highlight of the event was a fly over from an AH-1W Super Cobra helicopter that was based out of Johnstown, PA, home to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 773 Detachment B. The pilots Lt. Col. Michael Ward and Maj. S. Bollinger, made a couple of passes over the parade participants before heading over to Applebee’s on the 5th Street Highway. It was there that the Cobra touched down and was later surrounded by the Toy Run participants.

The band Axis provided entertainment while the staff from the Reading Phillies fed the crowd with free Berks Products hot dogs. Adults, kids and pets alike took turns having their picture taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus throughout the afternoon.

The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

The Children’s Home in Reading was established in 1884 as a day nursery, and through the years, has evolved into a treatment-oriented facility. The Home has more than a century of experience in providing care to boys and girls from the Reading/Berks County community, and, more recently, throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The mission of the Home is to care for the needs of the children and families in crisis and prepare them for success in life. Over time, the services offered by The Children’s Home of Reading have become more specialized and treatment focused, reflecting the increasingly complex needs of the clients served. Almost 1,000 children and their families will benefit through the following programs services: The Drug & Alcohol Center, The Adolescent Treatment Center, Specialized Foster Care, Berks Parents Services Collaborative and Residential Treatment Facility.

We like to thank all of those who participated in this year’s ride and all of those worked diligently to make it a success.

Camp JOY Comes To an End

Editor’s comment: I recently received an email from Jim Hay. Jim has been organizing the Camp JOY run to raise support for this camp that provides services to people with high-intensity behavioral challenges and complex medical disorders for the past 16 years. Jim was notified by mail that due to high cost of insurance and the difficulty in getting experienced workers that Camp JOY will be closed. No plans have been made on the disposition of the camp property at this time. I know that Jim has put his heart and soul into this project with the help of many of you from the motorcycle community. The email that I received from Jim is posted below.

It is with a very heavy heart that I write to you, my beloved Brothers and Sisters. I was informed by formal letter from Lori Plunkett, Executive Director of Brian’s House, that Camp JOY has ceased operation, effective immediately.

As many of you can imagine, I was totally taken aback by this dreadful news and only at this hour have been able to compose myself enough to type this sad message. I had no warning or prior knowledge that this measure was to be undertaken as my only involvement, despite being a co-founder in 1974, was my efforts in the area of fund-raising so I was completely surprised and shocked.

I am well aware, blessedly so, that many of you have shared my enthusiasm with regard to the fine work and excellent services that Camp JOY has provided to the mentally challenged of our community. I know that you share my disappointment and dismay that that work has come to an end after 36 years and for that I thank you, most sincerely, from the bottom of my heart.

The decision to take this route was made due to severe financial difficulties as well as many other issues pertinent to the operation of a facility such as Camp JOY and I am quite sure that it was a very hard move to make. I will share the letter I received (hand-delivered) with any interested members.

With the approval of our fine chapter leadership I am going to recommend that we donate all funds raised for Camp JOY to Brian's House, Inc which is the "mother ship" of Camp JOY and is in dire need of contributions as well.

I hope that each of you will accept my heartfelt gratitude for all that you have done and shared to assist Camp JOY over the last 16 years.

With love, Jim Hay

The Lehigh Valley Chapter of ABATE of Pennsylvania has been hosting their Annual Toy Run to benefit the Volunteers of American Day Care in Allentown for 27 years. Every year this event has grown in numbers and for the 2010 run the tradition continued. This ride takes place annually the Saturday before Thanksgiving.

The event formed up in the Walmart parking lot located on Hamilton Blvd. (Route 222) in Trexlertown which is just outside of Allentown. From there the hundreds of motorcycles were led by Santa down Hamilton Street into Allentown and to the VOA center to leave their toys for Santa to hand out.

I have been a part of this ride since the early 1980’s when I first began riding and I can remember some days that even the bitter cold of winter didn’t deter riders from participating. On this day the weather was cool but not so cold that you felt as though you were freezing just standing around waiting for the ride to begin.

As bikes continued to pour in, lining up for the start of the ride, the members of the Lehigh Valley ABATE chapter quickly got them lined up and registered for the ride. Members of the King’s Riders, Christian Motor-cyclists Association helped direct traffic keeping the area clear and making sure there no incidents with people getting in the way of arriving motorcy-cles. Both organizations did an excellent job in making this even the suc-cess that is was.

There are plenty of photos to view o the East Coast Biker website www.eastcoastbiker.net on our photo page and you can view even more photos by Teresa Delikat of Delikat Photography on their chapter website www.lvabate.org. Go there and check them out.

Next years event proves to be an even bigger one with more support from local groups. I certainly look forward to being a part of it again and I’d like to see you there. Thanks for doing such a great job guys!

Let the guys know that you read about the Lehigh Valley ABATE Toy Run in the East Coast Biker Magazine.

I hope to see YOU in the East Coast Biker magazine soon!

Denny Blocker poses with Ashlee Miller Miss Blocker 2010

A Fourty Year TraditionServing bikers is what Blocker Enterprises is all aboutstory & photos by Norm Keller

It takes a lot to keep a business running, let alone growing it. Blocker Enterprises has been providing a one stop location for motorcyclists and motor sports enthusiasts since 1971. Offering the Harley-Davidson brand along side Yamaha & Kawaski provides their loyal customers with a one stop source for bikes, service and accessories no matter what type of bike you choose to ride.

Denny Blocker is the head the orgainization and has guided it to the 50,000 square foot building that it is today. Denny states that a huge part of his success over the years is that “We are involved not only with our customers and motorcyclists in general but we are also involved in the local community and we give back where we can.” Denny further adds that “As a motorcycle dealership you have to be involved or you loose focus on why you’re in this business.”

The Lehigh Valley HOG (Harley Owners Group) chapter that operates out of this dealership is one of the most active in easthern Pennsylvania. There is also Star Motorcycle Touring chapter from this dealership and they are also active with the American Motorcyclists Association (AMA). All of this interaction with the motorcycle community is what has made Blocker Enterprises a good place to do business because they know what riders want and then provide it.

One of the biggest successes of this dealership is the Annual Fall Foliage Run held every year the second Sunday in October. At one of these events Malcolm Forbes and Elizabeth Taylor even showed up to participate. Is it any wonder why this dealership continues to grow even in a weak economy. I’d like to congratulate them on a job well done and wish them another 40 years of success and I hope to be there to see it.

Stop by Blocker’s when you get a chance, they’re easy to find and make a great weekend ride. Check them out at WWW.BLOCKERS.COM for more information. And when you stop by let them know that you read about them in the East Coast Biker magazine.

Bikers and Friends Support Local Family Mehri Children Benefit brings people together for a cause Story & photos submitted by Rick Nauman

On Sunday, August 22, 2010 nearly 60 bikes were parked at the Tri-Boro Sportsmen Club in Northampton, PA. Not bad for a rainy day!

The Tri-Boro hosted a Motorcycle Poker Benefit Run for Trystan and Annikah Merhi (pronounced mare-he). These kids lost their mother Denise, their grandfather Dennis Marsh, great-grandfather Alvin Marsh, and their neighbor Steven Zernhelt. Sadly, their lives were taken all too soon.

When the news hit the community of Northampton, people who attended Northampton High School around the time Denise did, rallied to put something together. Kim Glass organized volunteers and many aspects of the event. Brothers Rick and Bob Nauman and friends including Roger and Cathy Bodnar, Mary Jo Sommer, Tricia Brown, Jennifer Sommer and dozens of volunteers put together an outstanding ride, wonderful entertainment and delicious food. Too many volunteers to thank; however, each one’s efforts are greatly appreciated!

DJ Hammer, another event organizer kept the crowd entertained along with Ricky Smith & The Crush, Ozone Riders, The Smith Compound and 3d dance studio.

People opened their hearts and their wallets for this day-long event. Over 1,000 people braved the rain and paid $10.00 per person to sample the food, listen to live music and buy tickets for the chance to win one of about 100 different gift baskets, with the proceeds – every cent – going to the care of Trystan, 13, and Annikah, 10.

Through the use of event fliers and word of mouth, vendors and residents eagerly stepped forward to donate time, food and gift items. "We knew we had to take care of the kids," said Tricia Brown, who was helping coordinate volunteers to prepare and serve food.

Most important, said Brown, were the members of the Tri-Boro Sportsmen Club, who offered their facility free of charge. "They have been more than wonderful," said Brown.

Chris Bodnar, manager of the 2,500 member hunting and fishing club, said he was approached within a week of the untimely deaths. “My father is the president here and I mentioned it to him once and he said 'let's do it,'" said Bodnar. Benefit organizers not only got use of the 40 year old club and surrounding grounds, but they also used the covered wood deck that overlooks the Lehigh River to host the bands. Club members also pitched in to help, including a dozen bartenders.

"Everybody here was shocked when (the stabbings) happened," said Bodnar. "They wanted to help." Members who didn't contribute their time found other ways to help by bringing their families.

"This was a good cause," said Eugene Strauss of Allentown, an original club member who brought his wife and grandson. "Especially to help children", he added.

by Lee D. Gaber, Esquire1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1--22-2)[email protected]

Let me begin this month’s column by wishing everyone a very Happy and Healthy 2011.

I have been receiving some calls regarding the new “ObamaCare” and what it means? Truth be told, I don’t think it’s clear as to exactly what is included in the new bill. However, one of the benefits effective January 1, 2011, is that children of participants in group health plans are now eligible to remain as dependents through at least age twenty six.

There are other changes that will also become effective in January and I recommend that you ask your insurance company for a list of any and all changes. You may find some changes to be helpful, while others may have a negative impact and should be

addressed before finding yourself in a position where the change could be detrimental. On another note, like many of you, I am covered by an HMO and I recently received an update advising

me of a “Guest Membership” clause in my policy. Prior to this notice, I had never even heard of “Guest Memberships”. However, for those of you who have children on your plan, but they are living away from home, i.e. attending college or for some other reason, understanding a “guest membership” is important.

Simply put, guest membership is a temporary courtesy enrollment in another HMO plan that allows members living away from home, to receive the full range of benefits from the HMO plan covering the geographical area they are living in.

This is an important issue because most people are not aware that many health plans, including almost all HMO’s, have a limited geographical area in which they will allow you to seek hospitalization or medical benefits. For instance, I found out that my HMO only allows me to seek medical care, without special permission, if the care is provided within a five county area contiguous with the county in which I live.

Apparently, if I require treatment outside of this area, I must receive special permission prior to receiving care, in order to have my bills paid for by my primary HMO. By signing up for this benefit in advance your dependents will avoid the need to seek permission for their medical care to be paid for by your primary health carrier.

Those of you who regularly read my column know, I am a strong advocate of full insurance coverage. Additionally, I also advocate full disclosure to your insurance companies of all factors both positive and negative, before you purchase insurance. This way, if you ever need to present a claim, your insurance company will not be able to deny benefits based upon some obscure fact that you failed to disclose prior to purchasing the coverage. I would much rather disclose any negative facts prior to the purchase of a policy and deal with the ramifications then, rather than have an insurance company attempt to deny a claim based on a non-disclosed fact.

I hope you find this information informative and if you would like additional information on this topic, or any other, I can always be reached at [email protected] or 1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888-292-5352). Sincerely,LEE D. GABER, EsquireThe one and only, “Cycle Attorney”

Tri-state riders gave to others in November at in the holiday toy runs and events held in November.

Despite bureaucratic expenses from the City of Philadel-phia the annual For the Kids toy run to provide toys for sick chil-dren at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia took place on No-vember 7th. At noon the Philly Phanatic led thousands of bikes from Delaware Avenue to the hospital where this year riders were able to deposit the toys in bins in the atrium lobby of the hospital. Last year this annual ritual was not permitted due to security concerns. However representatives from PCOM stated that due to the city of Philadelphia’s new parade fees, this year’s event could be replaced by a “ride by” type of event in the future.

The riders of Delaware and Chester counties who partici-pated in the annual BACA Toy Run of Delaware County brought hundreds of toys to the Chester Administration Offices on the af-ternoon of November 14th. The Deck in Tinicum Township pro-vided refreshments for the participants after the run.

Some area riders gave up their Thanksgiving morning to assemble outside the ballroom at America’s Best Value Inn on Route 70 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey to honor the Airmen, Sol-diers and Marines stationed in the area who could not be with their families for Thanksgiving. Area riders and residents waved flags and showed their support as over 300 service people ar-rived in special buses from area bases.

Members of Tri-State HOG brought new winter coats for children as they rode their motorcycles & cars in the Tri-State HOG’s Operation Warm Coat Run on November 20th. The mem-bers left Hannum’s Harley-Davidson of Chadds Ford, PA at noon and rode down Baltimore Pike to Riddle Hospital in Media where representatives from Operation Warm collected the coats and donations to give to children too poor to own a new winter coat. Hannum’s HD provided pizza, hot beverages and a $10.00 gift card for all who participated in the event.

Members of Chapter A of the Gold Wing Road Riders Asso-ciation attended their annual holiday banquet held on November 13th at the Holiday Inn in West Chester, PA where the club en-joyed a buffet dinner followed by a gift exchange.

The spirit of helping others continues during the holidays as cold winter days limits riding in the tri state area.

For the past thirty years the Delaware Valley Chapter of ABATE www.DelawareValleyABATE.org has hosted the Philadelphia Toy Run for the Kids. This ride has meet annually on the first Sunday in November along Columbus Avenue in Philadelphia to ride across town to the Children's Hospital www.CHOP.edu presenting their toys for the all the kids.

This event has annually drawn as many as 60,000 or more riders and has become the largest toy run to be held on the east coast. Riders come to attend this event from as far away as the Carolina’s to the south and up into New England. You could be at the head of the line, park your bike and drop of your toy then get back on your bike to head home and the riders will still be coming off of the Schuylkill Expressway as you are leaving.

Sadly, this is the last year for the toy run as a ride across town. The cost of putting this event together has become overburdening for the organizers and the city of Philadelphia, not to mention the tied up traffic for hours as the motorcycles wind their way over to the hospital.

I spoke with members of Delaware Valley ABATE and they assure me that it is not the last year for collecting toys for the kids. They are already working on 2011’s event to re-structure it. One of the ideas is to make it a one or possibly even a two day event where you can come to drop off your toys and enjoy some entertainment like bands and vendors. This would make it an all day event where you could come and share in the Holiday Joy of giving.

This years event was a huge success as it always is. The weather was perfect and bikes were out in full force. It was a great day to take a ride and get out with your friends before the snow of winter forces us to park our bikes in the garage. As always I totally enjoyed myself and meeting with my readers.

I will keep in touch with the organizers for 2011 and let you know as plans are settled but don’t worry, they will be back in 2011 doing what they love to do … helping the kids. Until then, when you see them, tell the guys from Delaware Valley ABATE that they did another outstanding job and remember to also tell them that you read about it here in the pages of the East Coast Biker magazine. I’ll see you there on November 6, 2011 … mark your calendar. Oh, and don’t forget to check out the photos and video of this event on the East Coast Biker Website.

Fallen Soldier Gets Support Old Dogs Brotherhood MC Help Stand Watch Story & photos submitted by Little Richard

We were watching the news when we heard about

the funeral arrangements for fallen soldier, Spc. Dale J. Kridlo. The protesters that were going to be there got on the phone, got on the internet & everybody said the same thing… that we have to stop them and protect the family.

Hundreds of people showed up. Every time we asked the police were the protesters were they said they didn't know. We later found out they were half a mile away and there were only five of them so the family was spared.

One of the Old Dogs Brotherhood MC members, Sarge, was chosen to escort the body to and from the church. The ODB was the only non-military bike club that was chosen, what an honor.

Sarge was also chosen to stand in the Honor Guard before the body was taken away. This made me, as president of the ODB, proud.

The bikers that showed up were 1% to 99%, many of the military groups also were there. Hopefully we will never have to worry about protesters again in the area. Little Richard, Old Dogs Brotherhood Pres.
