Hiding out behind theMilky Way

SCIENCE DAILY, 11April— A leggy cosmiccreature comes out ofhiding in a new infraredview from NASA’sWide-field InfraredSurvey Explorer , orWISE.

The spiral beauty, cal led IC 342 andsometimes the “hiddengalaxy,” is shroudedbehind our own galaxy, the Milky Way.

Stargazers andprofessional astrono-mers have a hard timeseeing the galaxythrough the MilkyWay’s bright band of

stars , dust and gas.WISE’s infrared visioncuts through this veil, offering a crisp view.

In a spiral galaxylike IC 342, dust and gasare concentrated in thearms. The denserpockets of gas triggerthe formation of newstars, as representedhere in green andyellow.

The core, shown inred, is also burstingwith young stars, whichare heating up dust.Stars that appear bluereside within our MilkyWay, between us and

IC 342.This galaxy has been

of great interest toastronomers because itis relat ively close. However, determiningits distance from Earthhas proven difficult dueto the intervening MilkyWay.

Astronomer EdwinHubble first thought thegalaxy might belong toour own Local Groupof galaxies, but currentestimates now place itfarther away, at about6.6 to 11 million light-years.This image wasmade from observationsby all four infrareddetectors aboard WISE.

New agent chokes off energy

supply, kills cancer cellSCIENCEDAILY, 11

April — Cancer cellsgrow so fast that theycan outstrip their bloodsupply, leaving themshort of oxygen. Thecells then produceenergy in a way thatneeds less oxygen butmore sugar.

Researchers at theOhio State UniversityComprehensive CancerCenter-Arthur G. JamesCancer Hospital andRichard J. SoloveResearch Institute havedesigned anexperimental drug thatchokes off that sugarsupply, causing the cellsto self destruct.

The agent, calledOSU-CG12, is anexample of a new classof anticancer drugscalled energy-restrictionmimetic agents. It isdescribed in a paperpublished recently in theJournal of Biological

Chemistry.“Energy restriction

may offer a powerfulnew strategy for treatingcancer because it targetsa survival mechanismused by many types ofcancer,” says principalinvestigator Ching-ShihChen, professor ofmedicinal chemistry, ofinternal medicine and ofurology.

“Our study provesthat this new agent killscancer cells throughenergy restriction. Thisis important because itshows that it is possible

to design drugs thattarget energyrestriction, and it isexcit ing becauseenergy-restricting mi-metic agents may alsobe useful for otherdiseases, includingmetabolic syndromes, diabetes, cardi-ovascular disease andobesity,” Chen adds.

Energy-restrictingmimetic agents causechanges in cancer cellsthat are similar to thosethat occur in cancer cellsdeprived of their mainenergy source, the sugarglucose.

To design the newagent, Chen and hiscollaborators startedwith a drug calledciglitazone, which hadbeen developed to treattype II diabetes but alsoshowed anticanceractivity in laboratoryexperiments.

Childhooddeafness gene

uncoveredLONDON, 11 April — A

new genetic fault whichmay account for somecases of inherited deaf-ness has been revealed byDutch researchers. Itmeans that parents withthe hereditary conditionmay be able to predictmore accurately thechances of passing it on totheir children.

The new find, docu-mented in the AmericanJournal of Human Genet-ics, could even one daycontribute to treatments, say the scientists. Onechild in 750 is born withsevere hearing loss or pro-found deafness. The genein question, labelledPTPRQ, appears to play arole in the development ofthe inner ear “hair cell”before the birth of thechild. A genetic fault heremeans that these cells willnot form properly or insufficient numbers, lead-ing to profound deafnessor extremely poor hearing.—Internet

Miss America’s AIDSplatform: Making it personal

WASHINGTON, 11 April—Since 1989, the MissAmerica Pageant has required contestants to choosea platform to promote during their yearlong reign. Thisyear’s winner says she didn’t choose her platform, herplatform chose her.

When Caressa Cameron was 8-years-old, she losther uncle to AIDS, after her family cared for him thelast six months of his life.“At that age I didn’t under-stand what AIDS was, I just knew he was sick,”Cameron told FoxNews.com. Her uncle’s death hadsuch an impact on the Miss America titleholder’s fam-ily that soon after, they signed on to care for a fosterchild who was born with pediatric AIDS.

As Cameron got older, caring for the foster childhelped her understand what AIDS was, and the socialstigma that came along with it.“There were a lot ofkids in the neighbourhood whose parents would notallow them to play with us, because they thought thatif they touched our toys, that they could get HIV,”Cameron said.—Internet

Myittha Dam under construction forbenefiting Yaw region

Article & Photos: Kalay Win ThuRecently, I made a trip to Kazundaunt of

Htilin Township by car. Last seven years, I sawKazundaunt Village pointed by a villager whilevisiting Mawle-Kyapat Village, but I missed achance to visit there.

Therefore, I was pleased because I would begoing to visit the village.

During the trip by car, I noticed that almost all thepassengers on board the bus were female villagers ofKazundaunt Village, and male passengers were anolder person, a young person and I.

Myittha Dam, located near Pyintha Village of Gangaw Township, will irrigate 12,000 acres oflands.

The bus ran along Gangaw-Htilin-Kyaukhtu-Mindat Road. I learned that the road would beupgraded in the near future. Local people thankedauthorities concerned for construction of the road.

Daewoo bus which I took turned to a street andI saw the road signs reading “To Myittha Dam” and“To Kazundaunt Village”.

Exotic quantum spin-liquidsimulated: A starting point for

superconductivity?

The simulation of the quantum spin-liquid wasperformed on a flat honeycomb structure, wherethe electrons show a dynamical phase lacking any order.—Internet

STUTTGART ,11April — An exotic state of matterthat physicists call a “quantum spin-liquid” can be realizedby electrons in a honeycomb crystal structure. This isshown by scientists from the Universities of Stuttgart andWürzburg, Germany in a new study published in thejournal Nature. Electrons inside a crystal exist in differentstates. In many cases it is the crystal structure that decides,if the material is a metal with a finite electric conductivity,or if it is an insulator, which does not carry an electriccurrent. But there also exist insulating materials, whosecrystal structures suggest that they should behave likemetals. Such materials are called “Mott insulators,” and itis the repulsion between the electrons, that suppresses ametallic behaviour, such that the electrons are locked tothe atoms.—Internet
