Researchers at theOhio State UniversityComprehensive CancerCenter-Arthur G. JamesCancer Hospital andRichard J. SoloveResearch Institute havedesigned anexperimental drug thatchokes off that sugarsupply, causing the cellsto self destruct.

The agent, calledOSU-CG12, is anexample of a new classof anticancer drugscalled energy-restrictionmimetic agents. It isdescribed in a paperpublished recently in theJournal of Biological

may offer a powerfulnew strategy for treatingcancer because it targetsa survival mechanismused by many types ofcancer,” says principalinvestigator Ching-ShihChen, professor ofmedicinal chemistry, ofinternal medicine and ofurology.

“Our study provesthat this new agent killscancer cells throughenergy restriction. Thisis important because itshows that it is possible

to design drugs thattarget energyrestriction, and it isexcit ing becauseenergy-restricting mi-metic agents may alsobe useful for otherdiseases, includingmetabolic syndromes,diabetes, cardi-ovascular disease andobesity,” Chen adds.

Energy-restrictingmimetic agents causechanges in cancer cellsthat are similar to thosethat occur in cancer cellsdeprived of their mainenergy source, the sugarglucose.

To design the newagent, Chen and hiscollaborators startedwith a drug calledciglitazone, which hadbeen developed to treattype II diabetes but alsoshowed anticanceractivity in laboratoryexperiments.

SMOLENSK , 11April —Pilot error wasa possible reason forthe plane crash thatkilled Polish PresidentLech Kaczynski andCentral Bank govern-or Slawomir Skrzypekon Saturday, aspokesman for theSmolensk local gover-nment said.

Myittha Dam under construction forbenefiting Yaw region

Htilin Township by car. Last seven years, I sawKazundaunt Village pointed by a villager whilevisiting Mawle-Kyapat Village, but I missed achance to visit there.

Therefore, I was pleased because I would begoing to visit the village.

During the trip by car, I noticed that almost all thepassengers on board the bus were female villagers ofKazundaunt Village, and male passengers were anolder person, a young person and I.

Myittha Dam, located near Pyintha Village of Gangaw Township, will irrigate 12,000 acres oflands.

The bus ran along Gangaw-Htilin-Kyaukhtu-Mindat Road. I learned that the road would beupgraded in the near future. Local people thankedauthorities concerned for construction of the road.

Daewoo bus which I took turned to a street andI saw the road signs reading “To Myittha Dam” and“To Kazundaunt Village”.

STUTTGART ,11April — An exotic state of matterthat physicists call a “quantum spin-liquid” can be realizedby electrons in a honeycomb crystal structure. This isshown by scientists from the Universities of Stuttgart andWürzburg, Germany in a new study published in thejournal Nature. Electrons inside a crystal exist in differentstates. In many cases it is the crystal structure that decides,if the material is a metal with a finite electric conductivity,or if it is an insulator, which does not carry an electriccurrent. But there also exist insulating materials, whosecrystal structures suggest that they should behave likemetals. Such materials are called “Mott insulators,” and itis the repulsion between the electrons, that suppresses ametallic behaviour, such that the electrons are locked tothe atoms.—Internet
