A Day in the Life of a 2nd
Grader!
Please make sure your child is in the classroom no later than 8:20am.
We have a 10 minute morning meeting with the students to discuss before they head to math.
Arrival8:05-8:30
We use flexible skills groups for math and we all teach Saxon Math.
Math homework is nightly. Please refer to your child’s math teacher’s website for assignments.
Math homework will not be given on weekends.
Tests are given every 5 lessons. Homework: 10 points Tests: 100 points

Spanish 9:25-9:55
Students are responsible for filling out homework in their planners.
Students will fill out planners in math and
reading classes.
Planners9:55-10:00
This is the students first recess of the day. Two 2nd grade teachers and Mrs. Wellette
are outside with the students at this time. Please make sure students have coats,
gloves, etc. when necessary. No outside toys or electronics are allowed at
recess.
Recess10:00-10:15
We have two snacks during the day.◦ One during reading in the morning. ◦ One in the afternoon.
Please no peanut/nut snacks as we have some life threatening allergies in 2nd grade.
Peanut or nut foods can be eaten in the lunch room.
Students may keep water bottles at their desk.
Snacks
We use flexible skills groups for reading and all teach with the Reading Street curriculum.
Reading logs◦ Read 15 minutes a night◦ Once logs are complete with signatures students turn
them in for a treasure box dig. Reading centers and class work may look
different in all of the classes. Center Work: 20 points Tests: Vary depending on test There will be a reading test every Friday.
Reading10:15-11:25
Spelling is done with your child’s reading teacher.◦ Spelling tests are every Friday. ◦ Spelling homework is two pages. ◦ Spelling homework is given on Fridays and due
the following Friday (one week to complete). ◦ Challenge words are extra credit.◦ Homework: 10 points◦ Test: 24 points
Spelling
Students go to lunch first. Please practice your child’s student number
with them for hot lunch. Students then go to their 2nd recess for the
day. Mrs. Wellette (our 2nd grade para) and Mr. Riley
(the playground supervisor) are with the students at recess.

Classes have a two day rotation per special. Library is once a week.

C.A.M.P.12:15-1:00
Every Child A Writer (E.C.A.W.) Students are placed in small groups and
work with their teacher every day for 15 minutes.
Students are tested every 15 days. These groups are fluid and students must
hit an 85% or better to move onto the next level.
Writing is in homeroom. Center work: points vary Cold prompts: 100 points
Writing1:00-2:05
Science and social studies done in homeroom. Some units will have a test and students will
bring home a study guide. Activities: 5 points Tests/Projects: vary depending on test Big events to look forward to:

The students go to their 3rd recess of the day at this time.
Something new to our schedule this year!
Recess2:40-2:55
Drop Everything and Read Students may bring books from home, but
please label their name in it. Students will begin AR (Accelerated Reader)
this year.◦ Students read within their level and then take
comprehension quizzes afterwards. ◦ Mrs. Lilly ties rewards into AR goals. ◦ Students move up the AR goal board in their
homeroom.

We finish our day with read aloud. Students may not be dismissed until their
name shows up with walker, car, bus, or it is all call time.
