Welcome

Hello athletes and parents! What a joy it is to welcome you to the Commons Kids Tri! I am happy to have each one of you as a part of this special event on April 13th. The Commons of Lake Houston is excited to be hosting the race and supporting our kids in living active, healthy lifestyles, and having fun while doing it.

Our team is committed to producing a safe and amazing race. All of our race areas are led by highly skilled Race Ambassadors. Many of which, are Ironman athletes themselves. Our goal is for every athlete to feel like a rockstar; growing in confidence and developing perseverance. We are passionate about supporting our youth as they set goals and overcome their fears or obstacles to achieve them.

Because we strive to put on exceptional races, all registered athletes will receive the following:

Bike support for the race will be provided by Tailwind Bicycles. If an athlete has a problem with their bike, they can take it to the support tent located outside of the transition area and a bike tech will assist.

Race Day Parking

Parking will not be allowed on the race course, including the pavilion parking lot. This applies to any type of motorized transportation: cars, golf carts, ATV’s, etc.. Vehicles parked on the race course between 7am - 11am will be towed at owner’s expense. Parking is

available alongside certain roads in the community (see map below). Please park on the side of the road, NOT in someone’s yard.

For everyone’s safety, roads in the race course will be closed between 7am - 11am. Please plan to arrive with plenty of time to park and walk to the transition area. We encourage people who live in the community to ride their bicycles to the pavilion. We ask all adults and children riding their bicycles to the race venue to wear a helmet.

Post Race

There will be food and fun for the athletes and volunteers after the race. The athletes and volunteers must keep their wristband on to receive free food.

Awards

All athletes will receive a finisher’s medal upon completing the race at the finish line. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each division at the awards ceremony for both girls and boys. For example: 1st, 2nd, 3rd for boys 10-13 yrs and 1st, 2nd, 3rd for girls 10-13 yrs.

Timing and Results

Timing is provided by FTR Race Management. Athletes will receive their timing chip and ankle strap at packet pickup. The timing chips and ankle straps must be returned. Volunteers will be at the finish line to collect. If an athlete does not complete the race or cross the finish line, the parent is responsible for turning the ankle strap in at the finish line. If ankle strap is lost or not turned in, parent is responsible for paying for its replacement. Official race results will be posted at the race site and online.

Race Day Pictures

Race day pictures will be taken and uploaded for parents to download, at no cost, approximately 1-2 weeks after the race. An email will be sent when pictures are available.

Triathlon Rules

General Race Rules1. Athletes must wear their colored division wristbands the entire race.2. Athletes must display race numbers at all times.

• Swimmers must wear their race number tattoos or have clear body-marking• Cyclists must have bike and helmet stickers• Runners must wear run number bib displayed in the front

3. Athletes must wear timing chip for the entire duration of the race, which should be secured to the athletes left ankle.

4. No athlete may mount or ride their bike at any time without their helmet. This includes bike transport from cars to race location and back within the community. There are no exceptions and athlete may be subject to disqualification.

5. Athletes, parents and supporters are expected to be respectful and courteous at all times. Rude, abusive language and/or behavior or unsportsmanlike conduct will not be allowed.

6. Athletes must complete the course distance and route defined by their division (age group). If an athlete is unable to complete the course, the athlete or parent is responsible for telling the Race Director or finish line volunteer.

7. Cow bells, air horns, fun signs, pom-poms, and supportive cheering for all athletes are encouraged!

Swimming Rules1. Appropriate swimwear must be worn.2. Goggles or face masks are allowed, but not required.3. Swim caps are allowed, but not required.4. Athletes must complete the entire course distance.5. Athletes cannot pull on or hold on to another athlete in the pool.6. Diving is NOT allowed in the pool.7. Flotation devices, such as lifejackets or water wings, may be used during the swim, but

the athlete using the flotation device will not be eligible for division awards.8. Athletes must follow instructions given by lifeguards, race officials, and volunteers.9. Parents and supporters are allowed in the pool area during the race but must remain on

the outer grass area. The concrete pool deck immediately surrounding the pool must remain clear for athletes and race officials.

Transition Rules1. Athletes must have the following to enter the transition area:

• Colored division wristband worn on left wrist• Race number tattoo or clear body marking on the left upper arm (bicep)• Race number sticker affixed to bike• Properly fitting helmet• Race number sticker affixed to helmet• End-caps on handlebars (no hollow ends)

2. Athlete can be accompanied in transition area by one parent/adult only. Accompanying adult must be wearing matching wristband.

3. Once transition closes for the race to begin, only athletes and race officials are allowed in transition area.

4. Transition area will be open for transition setup from 7:20am to 8:20am. All athletes must clear the transition area prior to the race beginning and will not be permitted to re-enter until the appropriate time during the race for T1 and T2.

5. Athletes that have completed the race may not enter transition to retrieve their gear until all participants have finished cycling and have transitioned to the run.

6. A parent or adult with a division wristband can enter transition area to retrieve their athlete’s gear.

7. All cycling and running gear must be placed next to the front wheel of the bicycle and cannot be taken to the pool or swim start area.

8. Bicycles must be placed on or below the rack assigned for the athlete’s division (age group) and per the directions given by race officials in the transition area.

9. Bicycles can be racked in the assigned area by the handlebars, the seat or by using the kickstand.

10. Bicycles must be in line with other bicycles and cannot extend out into the transition lane.11. Athletes may not interfere or touch another athlete’s gear.12. Athletes must push their bicycles in the transition area. Athletes must walk or run their

bicycles until they reach the designated mount line.13. Upon completing the cycling portion, athletes must return bicycles to an upright position

in the same assigned location they started in.

Cycling Rules1. Athlete’s bicycle must be road worthy and in safe operating condition.2. The bicycle must have at least one working brake on the front and back wheel. Unless the

bicycle was made with only one brake, in which case, the brake must be on the rear wheel. Balance bikes are the exception and allowed.

3. The bicycle can be road, mountain, or youth style. 4. All handlebar ends must have a solid plug or end-cap.5. Aero or time trial bars are NOT allowed.6. Disk wheels or wheel covers are NOT allowed.7. Race officials reserve the right to identify a bicycle as unsafe and not allow it’s use in the

race.8. Training wheels may be used, but the athlete using the training wheels will not be eligible

for division awards.9. Athletes must wear a helmet approved by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.10. The helmet must be securely fastened prior to mounting the bicycle and at all times while

riding the bicycle. The helmet may not be unfastened and removed until the athlete has completely dismounted the bicycle.

11. Athletes must wear shoes at all times while on the bicycle.12. Athletes must ride in a safe manner, which includes:

• Riding on the right side of the lane• Riding no closer than two bicycle length distance behind the athlete in front of them• Passing can only be done on the left side of a slower athlete

• Riding in a straight line without swerving, veering, or blocking the forward progress of other athletes

• Avoiding side-by-side riding, except when passing13. Race official may remove and disqualify any athlete who appears to ride or behave in an

unsafe manner.14. Parents are NOT allowed on the course with the athletes and must stay on the grass

along the bicycle course.

Running Rules1. Athletes must wear shoes at all times while on the run course.2. Athletes can run or walk on the course. 3. Parents are NOT allowed on the course with the athletes and must stay on the grass

along the run course.4. Athletes must complete the course and distance for their division and cross the finish line

to receive finisher’s medal and be eligible for division awards.

Safety and Security1. Roads on race course will be closed. Local constables will be guarding road closures.2. Road closures will begin around 7:00am and remain until 11am (or until last child

finishes)3. Athletes and their accompanying parent/adult will have matching division wristbands4. Once athletes complete the race and cross the finish line, they will remain in the “Rockstar

Club” behind the finish line until picked up by a parent/adult with the matching wristband. Athletes are expected to be picked up immediately upon their race completion.

5. Volunteers will be easily identified by their red race shirts.6. The race has an official medical director that will be onsite and ready to assist in the event

of an injury. Local EMS will be called, if needed. Medical area will be at the pavilion.7. Race day weather will be monitored and adjustments made to the race plan and/or

schedule, if necessary.

Course Information (subject to change as needed)

The heart of all event activity is The Commons of Lake Houston pavilion. Surrounded by the pool, transition area and finish line, the pavilion also houses the restrooms, medical tent and post race food for athletes and volunteers.

Tri ClubsTeam tents are allowed behind the transition area and can be setup Friday morning, April 12th or race morning. Please contact the Race Director at [email protected] to arrange setup. Although the race location will be secured after setup on Friday and through race morning, The Commons Kids Tri and BraveHeart Multisport are not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items.

SwimThe swim will be held in the community pool. Athletes will be called to the pool by their division and line up inside the pool area. The race will start at 8:30am with the parent guided "Toddler Tri". At 9am, we will have a rolling start of the division/age groups that  will go in descending age group order (14-15 yr olds will go first, then younger age groups to follow). The athletes will start the swim one at a time with approximately 3 seconds in between each one. They will exit the pool area after their swim, run under the pavilion and follow the carpet to the secure transition area (path will be clearly marked).

Bike and RunThe bike and run courses are out and back loops on closed roads, secured by local law enforcement. Roads will be clearly marked and volunteers will be supporting and directing the athletes on the course.

Youth, Sr, Mid and Jr Class courses have the same route, just different distances. The distance for each group will be color coded and the color of the turn around signs on the course will match the color of the wristbands they'll receive in their race packet. When it’s time for the athlete to make their u-turn on the course, they will see a sign and balloons the same color

as their wristband. Parents - although we will have volunteers helping the athletes, please talk to your children about the course and what color to look for in advance. Athletes that cut the course and do not complete the full distance for their division will not be eligible for awards. Below are links to course maps for each division/age group.

There will not be timing chips or age group awards for this group; however, they will have athlete identification kits (temporary tattoos, bike and helmet stickers, and run number bib), and receive a finisher’s medal after crossing the finish line.
