PRESIDENT’S REPORT The 2019/2020 athletics season was like no other! After such a promising start, I am confident that no-one could have anticipated what was to come – bushfires, poor air quality, extreme weather and COVID-19! We can only hope that the 2020/2021 season is not fraught with such bad luck!
The only change at a national level for little athletics this season was the U11 and U12 60 metre hurdles being replaced with the 80 metre hurdles. At a club level, we welcomed some new members to the committee and made some minor changes to the running of our field events.
Cherrybrook Athletics Club has a proud tradition of athletes and officials emerging through the ranks and excelling at a high level. At the Athletics NSW Annual Awards in
May 2019, Sam Dale was crowned Junior Jumps Athlete of the Year, Sally Stagles the Sprints and Hurdles Masters Athlete of the Year and Elizabeth Jones a Gold Officials award. Cherrybrook Athletics Club was also presented with the Club Development Award of the Year. In June 2019, Julie Charlton was named Young Coach of the Year and Nicky Jenneke a Community Sports Administrator finalist at the NSW Community Sports Awards.
Fifty two athletes qualified for the Little Athletics State Championships, four teams won medals at the Little Athletics NSW State Relay Championships and we had a medallist at the State Combined Events Carnival and State Road Walk Championships.
Cherrybrook Athletics Club had representatives at a number of major international meets this season including the Oceania Area Championships, Oceania Masters Championships, World University Games, World Relays and World Championships. Kailyn Joseph was awarded a 2020 Kurt Fearnley Scholarship and Jill Taylor set a new Masters State record. Six medals were won at the NSW State Relay Championships and eight teams won medals at the NSW Club Championships. Three athletes gained medals at the NSW Combined Championships, twenty two medals were won at the NSW Junior and Youth Championships, five athletes won eighteen medals at the NSW Masters Championships and Cherrybrook Club placed third overall in the Treloar Shield.
The sport of athletics continues to rely heavily on volunteers from a club through to national level of competition. Cherrybrook committee members, especially the executive and championships committee, dedicate innumerable hours to ensure our athletes are given the best opportunities before, during and at the completion of each season. Thank you to each and every one of our valuable committee members for your time and contributions. Without you, our club would not operate and be as successful as it is.
I would also like to thank Coles, Hunter Pacific Ceiling Fans, Wamee Technology Accessories, West Pennant Hills Sports Club and McDonalds for their sponsorship this season; our officials particularly Elizabeth Jones, Colleen Reid, Janette Boyton, Victoria Cullen, Amanda Kely and Sara Kely; our coaches; age managers; Northern Metropolitan Zone Committee; Hornsby Shire Council, St Johns Ambulance and our parents and guardians for their continued support of our athletes and club throughout the season.

OUR LITTLE ATHLETICS SEASON Our 26th Cherrybrook Little Athletics season was bananas! Our 360
members had training and competition interrupted by rain, floods,
extreme heat, high winds, smoke and the COVID-19 pandemic. The
season had some great highlights including our ‘Come and try
coaching sessions’ during registration, a visit from the Sunrise
Morning Show and the McDonalds House Charity night. But there
were also some disappointments including five club competition
nights cancelled, Narrabeen Track flooded causing the rescheduling
of Region and then the cancellation of State due to the pandemic,
which also saw our members home isolating and missing the end of
season Fun Night. Despite these unprecedented events, our
awesome athletes made it a great season with over 7,000 PBs, fifteen club records broken and four records set. Another
great season of teamwork by our athletes, parents, officials, committee and coaches. Well done team Cherrybrook.
SUNRISE MORNING SHOW AT CHERRYBROOK ATHLETICS Thursday 31 October 2019
Over 50 Cherrybrook LAC athletes arrived at the Oval at dawn in their Club Uniform, to be part of the Sunrise morning show live crosses. Special guests included Kelsey-Lee Barber (World Javelin Gold medallist), Sally Pearson (Olympic Hurdles Gold Medallist) and our very own Alysha Burnett (High Jump World Champs representative). The morning event was organised by LANSW and Coles, together with the help of Nicky Jenneke and our coaches Amie
Bowrey, Robbie Cullen, Zac Hayward, Ryan Jones, Amanda Kely, Anna Kely, Matt Joyce, Alex Mills and Carla Takchi. The morning was a huge success and included coaching sessions, banana relays, live crosses, interviews, photos and plenty of fun, topped off by a delicious BBQ breakfast and gift bags provided thanks to Coles. A highlight was Sally Pearson hurdling over Isabel Suplina and Jenaya Lubrano, thankfully both survived!
RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITY FUN NIGHT Friday 25 October 2019 This year Cherrybrook Little Athletics Club supported the Ronald McDonald House Charity which helps families to stay close together when a child is requiring hospital treatment. A “Show your Stripes” fundraising month was held by Little Athletics clubs during October and Cherrybrook sold out of 150 pairs of striped socks and also a variety of treats on our fundraising night, as well as decorating athletes’ hair with coloured hair spray for a gold coin donation. Thank you to all athletes and their families for participating in this wonderful cause and to those that contributed delicious food items to sell. We raised an incredible $1405.
UNDER 6 and UNDER 7 RELAY NIGHT Friday 15 November 2019 Our Under 6 and Under 7 athletes enjoyed a night of track, field and novelty relays. Thirty athletes were divided up into 6 teams to contest the relay night. The night was run by Nicky Jenneke with the help of the parents as well as Ryan Jones, Anna Kely and Carla Takchi. First place was Team Red consisting of Audrey Dale, Hayden Howells, Olivia Lalor, Tyler O’Connell, Isla Passaro and an unnamed athlete. Coming in second place was Team Cherry which included Aven Benyamin, Imogen Connell, Sarah Lettice and unnamed Athlete. Third Place was Team Blue Boys consisting of Harrison Bray, Alistair Brill, Liam Fitzgerald, Ethan Li and Vincent Shaw. Congratulations to all our youngest athletes for a fun night.

CHERRYBROOK MULTI NIGHT Friday 28 February 2020 Cherrybrook Athletics Club annual Multi Night was originally scheduled for Friday 31st January 2020. Due to poor air quality in the weeks prior and the desire to complete program 2 and program 3 before the Regional Championships, Multi Night was postponed until Friday 14th February. Unfortunately, this date then coincided with the rescheduled Regional Championships on the weekend of the 15th - 16th February. To avoid clashing with the NSW Junior Championships on 21st - 23rd February, Multi Night was then run as program 2 on Friday 28th February, so athletes would have the opportunity to get through all programs before the end of the season. Program 2 did not cover as wider range of track events as our intended program and favoured our sprinters in a number of age groups, meaning the most versatile athletes were not necessarily rewarded. Despite this, we had lots of athletes establishing new personal bests in both track and field events. Congratulations to the following athletes who gained a top three placing in their age groups.

COLOURED PATCH NIGHT Friday 13 March 2020 Athletes had the opportunity to select from a flexible program. This modified program gave athletes in the U8+ age groups the opportunity to achieve goals they had set themselves which included PBs, coloured patch standard, or to simply enjoy a night of their favourite events. With the State Championships cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions, the night saw several records broken by our State level Athletes who would not usually attend this event. Guest Officials were invited, allowing parents to accompany their young athletes on the night. Our Guest Officials included track stars Ryan Jones (Coach and National Long Jumper), Carla Takchi (Coach and National Hurdler) and Justine Wallis (State Distance runner). Our long jump officials included Jenny Bishop (former Club Championship Officer and National Masters Athlete) and Kailyn Joseph (Commonwealth Games representative). Our high jump officials were Emily Jones (former Daniel Berry Award Winner) and Zac Hayward (U20 Oceania High Jump Champion). Our throws officials included Jill Taylor on shot put (World Masters representative), Rob Clark (Oceania Masters Representative) and Anna Kely (National Javelin Thrower). A great night was had by everyone involved.

LITTLE ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS
LA CHAMPIONSHIPS REPORT Another testing year of competition for our sport. Friday night competitions were impacted, yet again, with extreme weather conditions which saw the cancellation of many competition nights due to a combination of rain, dust storms, high winds, heat and bush fire smoke.
Our Zone Championships were held at Barton Park, North Parramatta in December with 162 athletes representing Cherrybrook Little Athletics at this event – an increase of 24 from the previous year which was very pleasing to see. Of these 162 athletes, 99 qualified for Region. This was slightly down on our 2018/2019 season of 103 but still a remarkable effort.
The Zone event was held without incident or interference, however, following the bush fires that engulfed our State over the summer months we then experienced a period of torrential rain and flooding which forced the cancellation of our Region Championships scheduled to be held on 8 & 9 February 2020. Region 5 officials were left with no alternative but to re-scheduled these Championships to the following weekend - 15 & 16 February. This resulted in some of our athletes missing the Championship due to other commitments/sporting events – a disappointing outcome for some but unavoidable in the circumstances.
Athletes, parents, officials and volunteers dusted themselves off, or dried themselves out, and turned up for what was a great weekend of athletics at Narrabeen. Of the 99 athletes who competed, 52 qualified for State. This was an increase of 11 from the previous year and a fantastic result for our club!
In an almost unbelievable turn of events, in fact a first in LANSW history, the State Track and Field Championships, scheduled for 14 & 15 March 2020 were cancelled! It wasn’t the weather that put a dampener on this event, but Covid-19 aka ‘Coronavirus’ that saw this potentially life threating virus reach every corner of the globe and bring the world to a standstill, pandemic style. The event was unable to be rescheduled in the Little Athletics calendar disappointing all, especially those attending their first ever State Championships and those missing out on their last.
Other competitions throughout the season included; State Relay Championships, State Combined (formerly Multi) Championships, NSW Club Championships, Trans Tasman Tour (held in NZ, and the last Trans Tasman Championship in its current format), and the State Cross-Country and Road Walk Championships.
A lot of time and effort has gone into preparing our club and our athletes for these events, to ensure the athletes not only perform to the best of their ability, continue to improve but also enjoy this wonderful sport in a fun and supportive environment. 2019/2020 was another challenging season but many new skills were learnt, personal bests achieved and new friends made.

LANSW STATE ROAD WALK CHAMPIONSHIPS Sunday 23 June 2019, Chipping Norton The 2019 Road Walks Championships were combined with the ANSW Short Walks Championships. A change of venue to Angle Park, Chipping Norton saw some very fast times over the flat, out and back course. Congratulations to the following athletes on their fine performances: Ruby Penn 7th place 8:28.00 U9 1200m Walk Natasha Flahey 3rd place 6:26.00 U10 1200m Walk Jethro Penn 7th place 9:10.00 U11 1500m Walk
LITTLE ATHLETICS CROSS COUNTRY Saturday 3 August 2019, Rydalmere 23 Cherrybrook Little Athletics athletes represented the Club at the NSW Little Athletics Cross Country Championships (U7 – U11) and the NSW Short Course Championships (U13 - U17). The Club achieved two individual medals, two team medals and eight top 8 positions. Special mention to Idris Burkhardt on his Silver medal and Milly Visser on her Bronze medal, as well as Josh Pellarini who was in medal contention until he took a wrong turn. Aliyah Bennett, Laura Bray and Kayla Wiberg took out the U9 Girls team Silver medal while Syesha Anthony, Amy Timms and Katie Bray took out the U11 Girls team Silver medal. A great day of team spirit and camaraderie. Little Athletics Cross Country Results

LANSW STATE RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS 16-17 November 2019, SOPAC Homebush This championship has become a key event for Cherrybrook LA’s club. Due to the early position in the calendar and being a ‘team event’, it is a wonderful opportunity for our athletes to compete together as a team and get to know each other at the front end of the season. The Junior athletes (U8 - U11) compete on the Saturday and the Senior athletes (U12 - U17) on the Sunday. This season, Cherrybrook once again submitted teams in both track and field events with 23 Junior teams entered, which is 2 more than last season. The seniors were consistent with last season ’s team entry numbers of 26 teams. Congratulations to all athletes that represented Cherrybrook with great pride and determination. It was lovely to see our athletes having such a great time with their teammates on and off the sporting arena. A special congratulations to the following teams on achieving a top three placing in the State: GOLD - U9 Girls Jumps A Team: Pippa Burke, Gabriella Omage, Sian Stewart GOLD - U17 Boys 4 x 100m: Joseph Ayoade, Donovan Bradshaw, Ajaiy Mohanraja, Jono Reid and Robbie Cullen (heats) SILVER - U17 Boys Jumps: Ajaiy Mohanraja (Long), Robbie Cullen (High) and Jono Reid (Triple) BRONZE – U11 Girls Throws Team: Natasha Flahey, Mia Stewart, Layla Tawbe

TRANS – TASMAN This season marked the final Trans-Tasman Tour and challenge. The first Trans-Tasman took place between Little Athletics NSW and Auckland Junior Athletics in 1977 and annually alternated between Auckland and NSW as the tour host. While we had no Cherrybrook athletes involved this season, over the years the Club has had dozens of athletes take part in the Trans-Tasman Tour both in NSW and in New Zealand. This valuable cultural and sporting experience will be missed on the annual athletics calendar and will hold great memories for those that took part.

REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS REPORT 15-16 February 2020, Narrabeen Academy of Sport This season the Regional Championships were scheduled on 8-9 February 2020 at Narrabeen. Torrential rain and flooding saw the postponement of the event to the following weekend of the 15-16 February. We had 99 athletes qualify but sadly a small number were not able to attend due to the reschedule and personal clashes. Over the weekend we had 156 top 8 places and a special mention to the Junior Girls 4x100 relay team coming 2nd in the final. The Regional Championship is the pinnacle for the U8 age group and we were fortunate enough to get some great results from some of our littlest athletes - Abigail Wigham came 3rd in the in U8G 70m and Madison Tabrett came 3rd in the Long Jump, well done girls! Of the 99 qualifying athletes we had 66 podium finishes – an amazing effort! With so many top three placings from Cherrybrook athletes, it is impossible to mention them all individually. However, our GOLD medallists included; 3 GOLD - Joel Moresi in the Under 11 Boys 800m, 1500m and High Jump and Kirsten Frykberg in the Under 17 Girls 800m, 1500m and the 3000m. 2 GOLD – Gabriella Omage in the Under 9 Girls 70m and Long Jump, Tayla Moore in the Under 12 Girls Shot Put and Discus, Sarah-Anne Koot in the Under 13 Girls 80m hurdles and 200m hurdles, Tara Webb in the Under 14 Girls Long Jump and Triple Jump, Jessica Coppolelli in the Under 14 Girls Shot Put and Discus, Jonathan Reid in the Under 17 Boys Long Jump and Triple Jump. 1 GOLD - Nisini Rajapaksha Mudiyanselage in the Under 10 Girls Discus. Mia Stewart in the Under 11 Girls High Jump. Isabella Fisher in the Under 13 Girls 400m.Thomas Shannon in the Under 14 Boys 1500m walk. James Hanlon in the Under 14 Boys 200m hurdles, Anna Kely in the Under 17 Girls Shot Put, Bayden Little in the Under 17 Boys Javelin and William Mills in the Under 17 1500 walk. In total fifty two (52) Cherrybrook Athletes qualified for State, an increase of eleven (11) from last year. Nicky’s games area was a hit again with our athletes as well as athletes from other clubs who wanted to be part of the fun! Thanks to the patience of all athletes and parents as well as parents who assisted with duties. Thank you also to our officials. It was a challenge but we got there!

LANSW STATE COMBINED EVENTS CARNIVAL Saturday 29 February and Sunday 1 March 2020, Tamworth A great weekend of Athletics was had in sunny Tamworth over two days of competition. Nisini Rajapaksha Mudiyanselage finished in a commendable 4th Place in the U10 Girls with strong throws in both Discus and Shot Put to advance her up the leader board. Will Austin came 5th in the U14 Boys after little luck in his 2 best events which happened to be the first 2 events of the carnival. He was then able to produce 4 consecutive PB’s to finish off strong. Robbie Cullen finished in 2nd Place in the U17 Boys to make it Silver 2 years in a row. He took out his favourite event of High Jump with commendable 2nd’s in Javelin, Hurdles and 100m. All three athletes gave their very best until the very end being the arduous 800m in very hot and trying conditions. Thank you to Jeanette Cullen who officiated over the weekend, to Phil Austin who was our Club Team Manager and to Chandra Rajapaksha Mudiyanselage for taking photos. Next year the event will be held in Wollongong for all those aspiring multi-talented athletes.

JUNIOR AWARDS COLOURED PATCHES The clubs coloured patch award scheme is an achievement-based award system targeted at the U7 – U15 age groups to encourage individuals to strive for their best across both track and field events. Results achieved at Club level, Gala Days and Championship events (Zone, Region, State etc) can be used towards obtaining patches. Yellow – Green – Red and Blue patches achieved during the season were awarded to athletes via their age managers. The Gold patch is the highest patch and is awarded at our annual presentation. This season 113 athletes were awarded coloured patches. Our Under 11 Boys followed by the Under 8 Girls and Under 12 Boys were the winners of the competition held in March for the age groups that submitted the highest percentage of coloured patch recording sheets.
GOLD PATCH AWARDS Congratulations to the following athletes awarded a GOLD patch – the club’s highest recognition of All-rounder personal athletic achievement. Will Austin (U14B) - Sarah-Anne Koot (U13G) - Joel Moresi (U11B) - Tara Webb (U14G)
100% ATTENDANCE This season six athletes attended 100% of the point scoring competition nights and they (and their parents) are congratulated for their dedication and enthusiasm. Our 100% award recipients are Dominic Chen (U8), Sian Stewart (U9), Nisini Rajapaksha Mudiyanselage (U10), Mia Stewart (U11), Ruby Semaganda (U11), Amy Timm (U12) and Ethan Lee (U13). NB Athletes who miss a night of competition due to representing the club at an alternate event eg State Multis, are regarded as being in attendance.
10 YEAR LITTLE ATHLETICS NSW AWARDS Congratulations to Thomas Shannon who has been awarded a certificate from Little Athletics NSW in recognition of achieving 10 years of continuous registration.
MOST CONSISTENT TRACK ATHLETE & MOST CONSISTENT FIELD ATHLETE These awards are based on the week by week results of each athlete in the Age Group. To achieve the highest
level, it is necessary to attend as many weeks as possible, go in as many events as are available and finish in the
top ten in each event that is attempted. The points are computer generated and awarded as follows:
1st = 10 points 2nd = 9 points 3rd = 8 points 4th = 7 points 5th = 6 points
6th = 5 points 7th = 4 points 8th = 3 points 9th = 2 points 10th = 1 point
MOST IMPROVED ATHLETE As with the Most Consistent Athlete, this award is also dependant on the number of times an athlete attends and
the number of events participated in. Points are awarded if an athlete improves their best time or distance in each
attempted event. Points for this award are calculated as follows:
Better than last personal best = 10 Points Equal to last personal best = 5 Points
To be eligible for any of the above awards an athlete should have attended at least 52% of the available weeks in
the season or have a legitimate reason for attending less eg injury. Consideration may also be given to dual
registered athletes U12+ who may also be competing in the weekend Seniors program.
NB: If an athlete gains first place in all three awards, they will be given the Most Consistent Track & Field Athlete award, as that is seen as the most prestigious award. The first runner up for the Most Improved Award will then become the Most Improved trophy recipient. If an athlete gains first place in either the Most Consistent Track or Most Consistent Field awards and first in the Most Improved award, they will be given the Most Consistent Track or Most Consistent Field Athlete award, as that is seen as the most prestigious award. The first runner up for the Most Improved Award will then become the Most Improved trophy recipient. Actual points given as quoted above can be changed from season to season. It should be noted that the committee will work out which week the calculation for the above awards will commence.

PERFORMANCE AWARDS Performance awards were introduced in the 2011/2012 season to recognise athletes who have performed well at club level in a specific event or discipline area but have not received an award in the most consistent or most improved categories for their age. NB: The criteria for Junior Awards described above are guidelines only and the committee has the final judgement on all awards presented. An attendance of 30% or more should be attained to be considered to receive these awards.

HIGH ACHIEVER AWARD Each season the Committee is privileged to choose one athlete from the under 17 Age group, to be nominated for consideration of the LANSW McDonald Scholarship award. The nominee is then made the recipient of the Cherrybrook Little Athletics High Achievers Award. The award recognises an athlete with Strong State level ability, as well as good sportsmanship, leadership, team spirit, service to the Club and passion for Athletics. This seasons Cohort of under 17 Athletes with seven qualified for State, made the decision to choose just one nominee very challenging. But the nominee selected epitomised everything the awards stand for. Congratulations Anna Kely. Anna Kely joined Cherrybrook Athletics in the Under 6 age group in 2009 to join her sister Sara Kely. After a few years Anna disappeared from the Club but on her return in the U13’s she made her first LA’s State championships. Her progress over the years has been impressive. In the under 7’s Anna won her first Club Award as the age groups second runner up for the most improved Athlete and last season she was the most consistent Track and Field athlete as well as most improved athlete in the U15 Girls. In her younger years, Anna was not the best of Athletes, but she was always smiling, always tried her best, was enthusiastic, gave everything a go and aspired to be a great athlete one day. Now in the U17’s not much has changed, except, now she is a great Athlete and aspires to be a World Class one.
In the past twelve months under Coach John Sharpe, Anna has started to excel as an athlete in throw events, in particular Javelin. It is in this period that Anna has enjoyed her greatest achievements in javelin, including her first State medal, a bronze at the LA’s State Championships (March 2019), qualifying and competing at her first Junior Nationals (April 2019) and her first All School Nationals (Dec 2019) as well as achieving a PB of 36.61m at the NSW Junior State Championships (Feb 2020) and qualifying for the LA’s State Championships in all three throws events. Anna has a real team mentality and over the years has competed in State relay events outside her comfort zone just to make up teams. Anna is well known for cheering on and encouraging team mates and is well loved by the Cherrybrook Athletics Community. Anna plays a vital role on Friday Club nights as she arrives early to set up, coordinates the early Javelin sessions, leads the warmup and coaches throughout the night and officiates on occasion. Behind the scenes she is as equally involved doing everything from working bees to pamphlet deliveries for the Club. Anna is not only a talented developing athlete, but also gives back to her athletics community. Anna is a great role model and has a maturity in her sportsmanship both on and off the track. Anna consistently strives to improve herself in all aspects of sport and encourages others to do the same. Anna is a valuable member of the Club and a well-deserved recipient of this award.

T.J. BEALE TROPHY Cherrybrook Little Athletics commenced in 1994. The club was financially strong in the initial season due to a generous contribution by Mr T.J. Beale. The committee of the first season decided that it was important to recognise the contribution of Mr Beale and created the T.J. Beale Perpetual Trophy (Mr Beale passed away during the 1998/1999 season). The award is given to a girl and boy athlete who epitomise the philosophy of Little Athletics. Criteria for the award consist of an attendance of at least 70%, a positive attitude and a willingness to embrace good sportsmanship, and must have been a member of the Club for at least 2 years. During the 2000/2001 season the committee agreed that the perpetual trophy would be awarded annually to athletes in the Under Twelve Age Group.

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS AND AWARDS NSW & AUSTRALIAN DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS Cherrybrook Athletes had 7 athletes selected in the 2019 Athletics NSW Target Talent Program (TTP) squad which features a 6 month schedule of training and educational sessions facilitated by some of the state’s best Athletics Coaches held at SOPAC. Athletes who were selected included: Samantha Dale and Jonathan Reid (Horizontal Jumps), Emily Britton (Hurdles), John Ballard and Donovan Bradshaw (sprints), Robbie Cullen (High Jump) and Para athlete Kailyn Joseph. Julie Charlton was an assistant coach for the Para athletes in this program. Congratulations to all these fine athletes for being recognised as future senior NSW and Australian elite athletes. ATHLETICS NSW AWARDS 2019 CONGRATULATIONS to Cherrybrook on winning the Club Development Award of the Year at the 2019 Athletics NSW annual awards night. Well done also to Sally Stagles (Sprints/Hurdles - Masters) and Samantha Dale (Jumps - Junior) on winning their respective category awards on the same evening. Elizabeth Jones and Janet Nixon were awarded as Gold officials for their amazing service for officiating at over 20 or more competitions throughout the 2018/19 season.
SPECIAL RECOGNITION Kailyn Joseph Congratulations to Kailyn for being just one of six Australian para-athletes to be awarded a 2020 Kurt Fearnley scholarship. The scholarship is designed to support para-sport ‘future talent’ athletes who receive limited support elsewhere and fast track their development to achieve success at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Kurt Fearnley Scholarship holders receive financial support based on their individual requirements, as well as NSWIS program funding and support including assistance with performance planning and access to NSWIS facilities. Most importantly, Kailyn will receive mentorship from the dual Commonwealth Games and three-time Paralympic gold medallist Kurt Fearnley. Kailyn performed strongly in Long Jump this season with highlights featuring a bronze medal at the NSW Open Champs and a Silver medal in the NSW Juniors Champs. She currently holds the T38 cerebral palsy, U16/U18 and U20 Australian Long Jump records. Congratulations Kailyn. Julie Charlton
Well Done to Julie for being named 2019 Sport NSW Young Coach of the Year. Julie commenced coaching in March 2015 and coaches at SOPAC warmup track and her squad has a wide range of ages from 15 to 52 years including fellow club member Kim Neuenkirchen. Julie coaches a wide range of wheelchair track events, as well as seated throws. Many of her athletes have achieved medals and broken numerous records at a state, national and international level. As a testament to the value of her coaching, at the Arafura Games in 2019, Julie had the honour of being asked by other International teams to be their coach at the international meet. Julie quotes: “Being awarded NSW Young Coach of the Year was an absolute honour. To be honest my athletes deserve all the recognition but it is truly lovely that I am recognised by my sporting community for what I can give back to the sport which has given so much to me.”
Jill Taylor Congratulations to Jill Taylor on being awarded Life Membership of the NSW Masters Association. This award reflects Jill’s many years of outstanding service on the NSW MA committee.

DANIEL BERRY SENIORS AWARD Daniel Berry was a Cherrybrook Seniors athlete from 2009 – 2013. Throughout this period of time Daniel broke many NSW and Australian records in the U/20 and Open Male AWD divisions in running events ranging from 100m- 1500m as well as Long Jump and Discus. He also participated for Cherrybrook Athletics on a regular basis at interclub competitions, State Relays and Allcomers events with great enthusiasm and determination every time he competed. In July 2013 Daniel tragically lost his life to cancer at the very young age of 22. He will be long remembered by our club for his loving nature, generous spirit, tenacious excellent sportsmanship, competitive drive, humble attitude and the inspirational way he lived his life
on and off the Athletics track. In memory of Daniel Berry the 2013/14 Athletics Committee introduced the Daniel Berry Award for Seniors athletes. The criteria to win this award are as follows: Age: 16+. Attitude and Sportsmanship: A positive attitude and a willingness to embrace good sportsmanship. Attendance: The athlete must have competed a minimum of 8 times in a season which can include representation for Cherrybrook Senior Athletics, NSW Athletics and/or Athletics Australia. Must have been a member of the Club for at least 2 years. DANIEL BERRY AWARD WINNER 2019-2020 ROBERT CLARK
Robert Clark became a member of the Cherrybrook Seniors Club in the 2014/2015 Athletics season picking up the sport for the first time at the age of 53 after being inspired by his daughter and former Cherrybrook Athletics member Lauren Clark. In his 5th season of the club Rob has evolved from an athlete that just wanted to have a go at the odd weekend event here and there to an Australian representative on the international stage. At the Oceania Masters Championships in 2019 Rob won Gold in the Outdoor Throws Pentathlon with a score of 2790 points – a terrific achievement for man with less than 5 years’ experience in the sport.
This season Rob was one of the standout athletes that represented the club the most with 12 appearances in the red, black and white featuring in 5 of the 7 Treloar Shield point scoring events. Rob, best known for his throwing abilities was seen every week giving at least 3-5 events a go without fail which featured participating in 8 different athletic disciplines including: Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, Hammer Throw, Long Jump, 200m, 800m and 1500m. He was everywhere on the track and field whether it was running, jumping or throwing and giving it a good red-hot crack and contributing many valuable points to the Treloar point score tally for Cherrybrook. This helped lead our club to claiming our highest place in the event history being 3rd as well as 3rd in the Masters division much thanks to Rob and his heroic efforts. In addition to this whilst Rob had a break from event(s) he would always ask fellow club members how they were going, what events they were competing in and wishing the best of luck to each and every athlete regardless of age, ability or gender. In between throws you could often hear Rob cheering on athletes in sprint or distance running events or even encouraging High Jump athletes nearby which highlighted his wonderful Cherrybrook team spirit.
Rob continued to lead by example at the State Championships events claiming a Silver medal at the start of the year in the Outdoor Pentathlon (55-59) once again having a go at running, jumping and throwing event(s). At the NSW Masters Championships, he performed incredibly well in 6 events to claim 3 Gold medals, 2 Bronze medals and a 4th place. This shows Rob’s competitive drive to do well but he is also one of the most humble athletes you’ll meet and he shows a great lot of respect to all competitors, officials and club members. Rob has a generous spirit much like Daniel Berry and he is an exceptional role model to all younger athletes, open athletes and fellow masters athletes in his attitude, sportsmanship and the inspiration he provides both on and off the track. In addition to this Rob has been part of the Athletics committee over the past 4 years and has spent countless hours editing newsletters, writing reports, compiling records and putting so much positive energy into this Cherrybrook Athletics club which we are so grateful for.
Rob is a very worthy award winner and an athlete Daniel Berry would have been so proud of.

SENIOR CURRENT RECORDS Whilst every effort is made to ensure that all records are correct, we rely heavily on Athletes to inform the Club if they have broken a record. Records may be broken at Club level, at major LA’s Championship event and at any verifiable NSW, Australian or International meet, consideration will be given to records achieved at major school events such as CCC, CHS and CIS. If a record has been missed please notify the club. Records for the U14 and U16 Age Groups are only awarded for events, which have the same senior competition specifications, this means that some LA’s State results may not be used as records eg 200m hurdles and some throw events. UNDER 14 MALE Records for the Under 14 Age Group were introduced in the 2010 – 2011 season

MASTERS INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS 2019 Masters Rankings have been improved dramatically over the past few years and most performances are automatically uploaded eg Treloar, State, National Championships etc. Some events eg Allcomers etc are a bit hit and miss and so the shown performance may not in practice be the best achieved by an individual during the year. Full year 2019 rankings (as at 21/3/2000) are shown for any event in which an individual is ranked in the Australian top 5, Oceania top 10 or World top 50.

GENERAL REPORTS 2020 TREASURER’S REPORT Cherrybrook Athletics Centre’s (“The Centre”) financial position as at 31 March 2020 remains strong. The Centre has Accumulated Funds of $126,476 having increased from the previous year of $116,844 as a result of the current year’s Operating Profit of $9,632. The Accumulated Funds are represented by Assets of $126,476 (Cash $91,545, Plant & Equipment at written down value $15,836, Uniform Stock $18,395 and Sundry debtors of $699) with no Liabilities.
The Operating Profit of $9,632 compares with a profit of $7,300 in the previous year (an increase of $2,332). The major items and variances are discussed further below.
Total Canteen Sales for the year decreased by $1,029 (11%) to $8,421. After Purchases the Net Profit from Canteen has only decreased by $66 to $5,554. This season again there were a number of Friday night competitions lost as a result of poor weather, bushfires and COVID-19 (6 nights were either cancelled or finished early this season as opposed to 7 nights last season). We have been lucky to maintain our profit due to careful management of purchases.
Total Uniform Sales for the year of $8,935 decreased from last year by $5,748 (39%). Our new club uniform was introduced two seasons ago and sales were therefore higher in the previous two seasons as all athletes had to change their uniform. Additionally the new uniform allows for plain black shorts to be worn and this has resulted in a loss of sales of shorts by the club as families can source these elsewhere. The net uniform profit for the year of $1,757 has reduced from last year by $3,446 (66%). We have kept our selling prices constant for the last three seasons since the introduction of the new uniform to assist families with this change but it has resulted in lower margins this season due to the increased cost of uniforms. Stock has increased by $1,596 from last year with the largest net change in stock items being an increased value in polar fleece stock. A new supplier was required to be sourced so an economical quantity was ordered and our remaining old stock has been written down to its estimated realisable value from $607 to $230.
Other Income increased by $2,230 (5%) to $49,581, which is mainly attributable to the increase in Sponsorships received of $3,800 to $8,800 ($4,000 from Hunter Pacific International to fund coaching and coaches vests; $2,800 received from Wamee Pty Ltd to fund regional shirts; and $2,000 from West Pennant Hills Sports Club to fund new age manager vests and equipment). Registration fees received and Active Kids receipts net of Registration expenses (paid to Little Athletics and Athletics NSW) are $34,148 which is an increase from last year of $2,724 (9%). Total number of registered athletes at 502 are up on last year of 450 by 52 (11%). Families have embraced the use of Active Kids vouchers to assist with the cost of registration. The Grant of $3,500 received from Little Athletics NSW was in relation to the long jump pit work for $8,400 carried out during last season.
Other Expenses decreased by $4,223 (8%) to $46,518. The major variances are: Depreciation decreased by $1,455 to $5,741; Athletic Funding decreased by $4,100 to $4,550; Ground and amenities hire decreased by $1,338 to $7,058; offset by increases in Competition entry fees and expenses of $1,247 to $7,653 (this season includes purchase of approximately three seasons worth of zone medals). Trophies & Awards and AGM & Presentation Night expenses in total at $12,149 are in line with last year of $11,221.
The net written down value of Plant & Equipment has decreased in total from $20,307 to $15,836 as a result of additions of $1,270 net of depreciation of $5,741. Additions included hurdles costing $645 and a half share joint purchase of a defibrillator with the rugby league club of $625. Depreciation expense has decreased by $1,454 to $5,741 as a result of the final write off of items. Additions are only depreciated for part of the year after they are installed ready for use.
I would like to particularly thank all canteen helpers throughout the season. I would also like to thank the Committee and many volunteers who have continued to assist in running the Centres operations.

SECRETARY’S REPORT As we have stepped past our Silver Jubilee, we have a very strong team of 19 Committee Members and 6 Committee Assistants this season, a record total of 25!
With 6 of the Committee members who have served the club for more than 10 years, 14 experienced Committee from last year and 5 fresh brains, committee meetings are livelier than ever. We have held 11 committee meetings this season with all agenda items dealt with effectively. This is our 26th year and we focussed on providing good coaching and training to the athletes on both Friday nights and training days.
The new Sports Coaching Student Work Placement program conducted as a partnership between the Department of Education and Little Athletics NSW has generated lots of interest
from Little Athletics centres around New South Wales. This partnership aims to provide opportunities for students currently studying their Sport Coaching as part of their HSC to meet their work placement requirements. The program could potentially assist our centre with conducting events, age managing, officiating and coaching, etc. Hopefully in the future we will host the HSC Sports Coaching work placement students at our centre too.
Sponsorships are consistent this year. Thanks to our local Australian company Hunter Pacific Ceiling Fans, West Pennant Hills Sports Club and our new sponsor Wamee Technology Accessories. Their continual support is very important to our club. We also want to thank all the parents who have been so supportive and helpful throughout the season. More importantly, with the help of Julie-Ann being our Secretary Assistant this year, it has made the job of Secretary easier and more enjoyable.
I enjoyed the work of Secretary. It was very rewarding, and I am very happy to be able to contribute to the club and follow the footsteps of the experienced who inspired me and helped me. I will continue my support to the committee and the club. The committee’s enthusiasm and effort are the key to the success of the club. We are rewarded by the joy and happiness we see on the faces of our little athletes. We are also very proud of the results they achieved this year and over a long term. Unfortunately, due to work commitments, I have to temporarily leave my position, but I will be very happily assisting the club in some other ways in the future.

SENIOR REGISTRAR REPORT This season saw a total of 142 registered senior members. The senior membership was comprised of 90 Dual Cherrybrook Athletes, 5 Dual Athletes from other Clubs, 24 concession members, 19 Open members, 4 Club members and 7 Officials.
Athletics NSW released its new registration platform this season – RevSport. There were some teething problems, as with any new system, but compared to the previous registration system it offers significantly better flexibility for athletes and the Club. Along with the new system came two new registration classes eg Concession members are 19 years or younger, or hold a Government Concession Card; Club members have limited competition access - eligible to compete at NSW Relays, NSW Club Champs, NSW Country Champs, NSW Masters Champs, NSW Street Relays & NSW Cross Country Relays only.
This season the Club had 3 athletes allocated special wreath competition numbers in recognition of them having won an event at the Open NSW State Championships last season. These athletes were Alysha Burnett (11), Samantha Dale (61) and Zachary Hayward (72).
Karin Webb
JUNIOR REGISTRAR REPORT We had 360 registrations this season, of which 182 were boys and 178 were girls. Our largest groups this year were the U8 Girls, U9 Girls and U10 Girls, each with 25 registered members. Thanks must go to the age managers for these groups in particular who do a great job to give everyone the time to complete their events.
At this point I would like to say a big thank you to Trish Bright at the LANSW office for her continued support, Jenny Koot who is the assistant Junior registrar and many Committee members for their assistance during the season, starting with the registration days.
This is my third year as a Junior registrar and I learn new information every year about registration and how Little Athletics operates. Thanks to everyone who has supported me to make my job easier and I am glad that I will be continuing next year.

COACHES REPORT and OUR COACHES One of the most enjoyable aspects of coaching athletics at Cherrybrook Athletics Centre is celebrating success amongst athletes. Whether it be winning a medal or simply celebrating a new personal best, it’s important for the athletics coach to celebrate with their athletes their successes. Our team of coaches again at Cherrybrook Athletics had a successful season with their athletes. Our team of weeknight coaches made up of Valmé Kruger (Middle and Distance Running and Cross Country), John Sharpe (Jumps, Throws and Sprints), Mick Zisti (Sprints and Hurdles); Carla Takchi (Junior Hurdles), Will Mills (Walks) Samantha Dale (Junior High Jump) Zac Hayward (Junior High Jump) and Amie Bowrey (Junior Field), have successfully coached athletes to a minimum of Regional or State qualification.
Additional Valmé Kruger; John Sharpe and Mick Zisti had a host of Athletes qualifying for Nationals which unfortunately had to be cancelled due to the Carona Virus outbreak. This crisis of the Carona Virus outbreak is extremely unfortunate for the Cherrybrook Athletics Centre and the athletes who qualified for State and Nationals. Due to this very unusual and unprecedented circumstances our team of coaches at Cherrybrook would like to call upon all athletes and parents and advise them in positive thinking and resilience in these trying times. Cherrybrook Athletics coaches play an integral part in our athlete’s development, and the influence the coaches can have on the athlete’s life can go way beyond the athletic field. We will get through this crisis together and bounce back stronger. We would furthermore like to thank and acknowledge the amazing sponsorship we got from Hunter Pacific in Dural, one of our local companies in our community. This sponsorship from Hunter Pacific in Dural enabled Cherrybrook Athletics Club to finance the ongoing coaching project for young upcoming coaches at Cherrybrook Athletics Club on a Friday night. Friday night coaching focus moved to more specific and consistent training in preparation for the Zone, Regional and State LA’s Competitions. Many of our younger coaches, Ryan Jones; Amy Bowrey; William Mills; Robbie Cullen; Carla Tachi; Rachel Ingram; Kailyn Joseph; Geneveve Cowie; Jonathon Reid; Victoria Cullen; Milly Visser and Anna Kely played a big role to the club’s successes at the LA’s coaching sessions on Friday night’s competitions, mentored by Valmé Kruger. Younger coaches are encouraged to be accredited on a Level 1 Track and Field course through NSW Athletics and they fund that themselves. Our thanks also go out to all our senior accredited coaches for the exceptional dedication and hard work that they have put in during the season of 2019/2020. In particular – Valmé Kruger, John Sharpe, Mick Zisti, Carla Tachi and Zac Hayward who again have worked hard to bring out the best in our athletes to provide wonderful expertise and encouragement to many of our athlete’s week to week. The Senior Accredited Track and Field Coaches at Cherrybrook Athletics Club as listed below are aware that athletes should develop a series of short-term goals which allow measurable progress towards achieving a long-term goal. The athletics coaches at Cherrybrook Athletics Club assist athletes from all ages in developing to their full potential during the week and assist at the Friday night LA’s competition meets with up and coming younger coaches. They are responsible for coaching athletes in the different events by analysing their performances, instructing them in relevant skills and by providing encouragement. All Senior Track and Field Coaches at Cherrybrook Athletics club are expected to be qualified and accredited. The younger up and coming coaches undergo continuous on-going training under the guidance of an accredited and higher-level coach or mentor, specifically on a Friday night competition. It is furthermore required from our Senior Coaches to refresh their knowledge by staying actively involved which will extend their experience of coaching and keep up to date with new ideas by attending on-going coaching courses conducted by the Australian Track And Field Coaches Association. The younger coaches on a Friday night are being rotated to different events for them to get more experience, confidence and exposure. All athletes are equally important to us and that is why we have multiple training sessions during the week to cater for the different standards and age of each athlete. Our senior ranks are also growing in numbers and the strength indicating that the depth in our Club is growing and of course with outstanding results. Valmé Kruger

AGE MANAGER’S REPORT It was once again a pleasure to work with the age managers over the 2019/2020 season. We are all grateful for their commitment and enthusiasm in leading their age groups on a Friday night. A great age manager can make a positive impact on the enjoyment of little athletics for their athletes, making it a fun and encouraging atmosphere, where the athletes want to do their best and achieve new skills and we really appreciate the great age managers we have at Cherrybrook. For the athletes, parents and for us as the age manager coordinators, it’s always great to have returning age managers and assistants, some who have been with their age group for years. You can see the good rapport they have with the athletes and parents in those age groups. Thank you for doing the journey with your athletes season after season! We also saw many new age managers and assistants take up the role and do a fantastic job – we hope you too will be back again next season, thank you for stepping into the role and doing it so well! We would also like to thank the parents that filled in for our age managers and assistants when both were away, you did a great job and we really appreciate your help!
Virginia Moresi and Simone Hayhurst
PARA ATHLETICS REPORT A fantastic season for our para athletes, sadly cut short, like all sports, due to COVID19. Aaron Palmer, Audrey Dale and Shana Filer were our little athletes, and Holly Saunders, Julie Charlton, James Gladman, Kailyn Joseph, Kim Neuenkirchen and Sara Kely our seniors athletes. All our little athletes improved nicely over the season, while Julie won gold and silver at the Oceania Area Championships, Holly won Gold at the Australian All Schools, James won an incredible 4 golds at NSW Juniors and Kailyn, Kim and Julie all medalled at NSW Open. Sara was unlucky to miss out on the podium this year but performed enthusiastically and consistently throughout the season. It has been a very rewarding new role for me, as the Club’s first Para Coordinator.

OFFICIALS REPORT Athletics competitions without officials just become another training night! Without officials in operation records cannot be broken and signed off and results cannot be guaranteed as being accurate. On a Friday night we ask parents to act as an official and encourage all parents to complete a level 1 officiating qualification in an event to ensure a good understanding of the rules. In association with the Age managers the officials are then responsible for running that event fairly & safely for all athletes. We thank all parents who have acted as officials at the various events this season for their time and commitment to this vital role. If anyone would like to do any of the level 1 qualifications, more information can be found on the officials page of the Athletics Australia website - https://www.athletics.com.au/officials/education/ Once a level 1 qualification has been achieved, you can officiate at both Little Athletics & Athletics NSW events. If there are any parents that have enjoyed their time officiating on Fridays & would like to take that further please feel free to contact Elizabeth Jones at [email protected] or speak to Elizabeth Jones or Amanda Kely on a Friday night. ZONE OFFICIALS – Jeanette Boyton, Victoria Cullen, Samantha Dale, Elizabeth Jones, Amanda Kely, Sara Kely, Jun Liu, Rob McCrostie, Chandra Rajapaksha Mudiyanselage & Colleen Reid, REGION OFFICIALS – Jeanette Boyton, Victoria Cullen, Elizabeth Jones, Amanda Kely, Sara Kely, Jun Liu, Chandra Rajapaksha Mudiyanselage & Colleen Reid, ATHLETICS NSW OFFICIALS – Jeanette Boyton, Cheryl Burnett, Victoria Cullen, Elizabeth Jones, Amanda Kely, Sara Kely, Linda Nixon, Colleen Reid & Sonia Wiberg, A special mention this year to Elizabeth Jones who was awarded with a life membership to the North Metropolitan Zone for numerous years of officiating at the Zone & Region carnivals.
JUNIOR RECORDS AND RANKINGS REPORT This season faced many challenges. Quite a few nights were cancelled because of the extreme hot weather or poor air quality due to bush fires and also the Coronavirus outbreak.
However, this season has once again seen some excellent results and records from our Little Athletes. Our records are signed off by club officials and have certain conditions attached to the setting of each record. Congratulations to all athletes who broke or established club records this season.
Due to the unavailability of starting caps in Australia for starting guns, the traditional starting pistol was retired. We have now implemented a system that uses Jex electronic starting pistols paired with Timing Solution’s electronic starting devices on all four tracks. Special thanks go to Nicky Jenneke for her assistance with this.
I would like to thank all the people for assisting setting up, packing up the gates, running the gates every week including the starters, all the age managers and parents for organising their athletes in lane order at the end of each race and Braden Timms, Assistant Records and Ranking official, who always arrived in time to help setup the gates.

EQUIPMENT REPORT Due to the unavailability of starting caps in Australia for starting guns, this season saw a need to investigate an alternative to using a cap based starting gun. Thank you for your patience as we investigated the best option. We have now implemented a system that uses Jex electronic starting pistols on all four tracks.
Equipment purchased this season included: Defibrillator (half share with Rugby Club), Hurdles for training at Mingara, Jex electronic starting pistols and speakers, High Jump straps, and the usual shot puts and discuses.
Thanks to Anthony Flahey for his hard work as equipment officer for the past few seasons. Unfortunately, half-way through the season Anthony relocated away from the area. Thanks to Kamal Pasha for taking on part of the Equipment Officer role by ensuring equipment is available at each event and accounted for at the end of the night.

CLUB HISTORY
LITTLE ATHLETICS Little Athletics commenced in Geelong, Victoria in October 1964. Randwick Botany - New South Wales’ first Little Athletics centre - was established in 1968 and the Little Athletics Association of New South Wales was formed in 1970. LANSW has over 200 centres currently operating and approximately 40,000 registered athletes each season.
Competition at Cherrybrook commenced in 1994 with the main objective of Friday evening meets to encourage all athletes to compete and improve in every event.
During the 2019/2020 Little Athletics season, the club had 323 registered little athletes of which a large percentage competed at the Zone and Regional Championships, and State Relays.
Aside from the introduction of some paid coaches as of last season to help guide athletes in more technical events, Cherrybrook Little Athletics continues to be a primarily volunteer run Athletics centre. Parents provide the majority of help from Age Managers and Field Event Recorders, to Officials during Friday night competition and other Championships throughout the season. This assistance combined with the invaluable efforts of our Committee members is crucial to the successful running and development of the Club each season and makes Cherrybrook Little Athletics the family friendly, fun club that it is.
SENIOR ATHLETICS The Cherrybrook Seniors Club commenced in the 2001/2002 season, thanks to the vision and hard work of then President Ken Donaldson and Vice President John Sharpe. Their goal was to provide an easy transition for our older Little Athletics athletes into Senior Athletics. In the first year of operation, the senior Club was primarily made up of the Coaches and a small number of the older Little Athletics members, with only a few members competing at the NSW State Championships.
Over the past 18 seasons the Club has grown substantially in both size and achievements. Our Senior Club has athletes that range in age from 11 - 60+ years, both in the able bodies and Para categories. The Club has developed Senior Athletes to National and International standard, including representatives in Oceania, Commonwealth, World and Olympic competitions. We regularly have athletes in NSW and Australian development squads, listed on National and International rankings as well as having athletes achieve State, National and Para World records.
Our Senior Club has successfully completed its 19th year. The 2019 / 2020 season membership was made up of 142 Athletes and 7 officials. Unfortunately, due to concerns about Covid-19, all State and National competitions were either postponed or cancelled. At the time of writing this report there were no new dates for running these competitions. The Club offers athletics competition and coaching for athletes of all abilities. Friday night competitions cater for those who only wish to compete at a club level. Our strength in the Interclub competition (Treloar Shield) has seen us regularly place in the top 8 clubs in both Juniors, Seniors and Master’s divisions, and this year placing 3rd overall. Now with 90 active Little Athletics members involved in Senior Athletics as Dual registered members, it is safe to say that the Dual athletes are the cornerstone to our Senior Club and the original goal to provide a pathway for Little Athletics members to access senior competition has been achieved and much more.
