CH A IRM A N A ND CEO REPORT
It is with mixed emotions that I write this as the final Little Athletics WA Annual Report. There is always a sense of reflection and sentiment when we evolve and change, however there is also a sense of excitement and anticipation as athletics in WA has matured to encompass the whole of sport. Great opportunities await us as we enter into a new phase of management and leadership.
Little Athletics WA commenced the season under the auspice of One Sport – One Team where the Little Athletics WA Board and Athletics WA (Seniors) Board worked together collaboratively to establish the strategic intent for the whole of sport, extending from Tiny Tots to Masters. Having established the foundation for change over the preceding years, and with ongoing development, a key milestone to commence the season was the establishment of One Management Team.
One Management Team was employed to deliver the sport of athletics to members across the ‘whole of sport’ and transition the staff and operations to a co-located premise within the WA Athletics Stadium. Although the concept of One Sport – One Team might be new in Australia for athletics, it was seen by our members, volunteers, management, and Directors to be a logical progression for the ongoing sustainability of the sport of Athletics.
For our members, One Management Team meant they were supported by staff across the
whole of sport. Little Athletics programs and competitions continued to be delivered and supported, just as programs and competitions for the senior members did. One Management Team also supported a co-ordinated approach and development opportunities for the transitional age group members. Member engagement and support across the sport increased with all Little Athletics Centres and Senior Athletics Clubs being directly engaged, consulted, and further encouraged to seek assistance, guidance, and development opportunities. The greatest challenges for the formation of One Management Team resided with the CEO, Mr Vince Del Prete, and his team of dynamic staff. Staff training, education and the nuances of co-location occurred whilst registrations commenced. Staff even resorted to utilising their personal Wi-Fi hotspots to ensure communications continued, whilst we negotiated to implement a reliable service! The successful implementation of One Management Team, whilst continuing to maintain the focus on delivery and service to our members was a key milestone and achievement to the progression of unification of the sport in WA.
A significant challenge, not only for Little Athletics, but across all communities, sports and businesses within the past 12 months has been the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. As transmission across the world increased and positive COVID-19 cases developed within our local communities, the difficult decision was taken to cancel the 2020 State Track and Field Championships. On the best medical advice available at the time. Simply put, the health and safety of our athletes, volunteers, officials, staff and event attendees
LAWA 2019/2020 ANNUAL REPORT / 7
It was a decision not taken lightly by the Directors and Management and was based on the best medical advice available at the time. Simply put, the health and safety of our athletes, volunteers, officials, staff and event attendees was deemed our highest priority. Although it is extremely disappointing for all that we did not get the opportunity to complete the season with our final championships; an event we acknowledge many had worked hard for; we greatly appreciate the support we received in making this difficult decision. We wish to thank and acknowledge the entire athletics community for your flexibility and understanding.
Our ability to be flexible and adaptable was tested as COVID-19 restrictions in the community increased. Staff were able to work from home, developing future engagement opportunities, exploring membership models, developing policies and procedures for the future change in the governance construct, and developing commercial and marketing strategies. During this time the dynamic team continued to communicate and engage regularly through the implementation of alternate meeting strategies such as Zoom.
Following the successful implementation of the One Management Team, Special General Meetings for Little Athletics members and Athletics WA members were held in June. The purpose of the meeting was to unify Little Athletics with our senior counterparts to implement a single governance structure across the sport in WA. Members voted overwhelmingly in favour of adopting the single governance model with over 90% of both Little Athletics and senior members supportive of the motion.
I wish to specifically acknowledge the services of Alistair Talbot, Tottle Partners who graciously provided his professional services,
experience and knowledge in assisting and guiding the development of the Athletics West Constitution.
The historic vote places WA as the only State Athletics body to exist under a single governance structure and under the strong leadership of one CEO across the whole of sport. Athletics West can now work as one with a clear direction and ability to ensure an enhanced delivery service to all current and future Members, state-wide. Our limitation will be the ability of the National bodies to progressively support whole of sport pathways from athletes, coaches and officials.
I would like to thank fellow Directors Fiona Bow, Dr Rishelle Hume, Lee Hutton, Ryan Hawkins, Dean Smith, Allison Moore and Kevin Wilson for your continued efforts to support, grow and strategically develop the sport of athletics and in particular, Little Athletics. With the formation of Athletics West, the Little Athletics WA Association will be dissolved along with the WA Athletics Commission.
Effective from 1 July 2020, we have re-branded as ‘Athletics West’. We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the contributions of our Members, State Government; specifically Hon Mick Murray MLA, Minister for Seniors and Ageing; Volunteering; Sport and Recreation for his support, and Steve Humfrey, Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, our stakeholders and partners and the support of the athletics community in making this historic decision.
I wish to acknowledge and thank the inaugural Board of Directors for Athletics West; Tim Lyons, David Rowe, Fiona Bow, Louise Soia, Dr Rishelle Hume, Dr John Forbes, Lee Hutton and Ashani Senevirantne.
I would also like to thank our Patron, Dr Toni Buti, MLA for his support and advocacy of the sport. Dr Buti understands the value and importance that sport has on the growth, development and health benefits for athletes and volunteers.
The following is a summary of key activities and outcomes for Little Athletics WA over the preceding 12 months:
• 2019 Malaysia Tour. 55 athletics and 5 Team Leaders represented Little Athletics WA in the International competition between Malaysia, Singapore and WA; • 2019 NW Regional Championships. In its second year of existence, the NW Championships were held in Exmouth with visiting Centres including Broom, Hedland, Karratha, Newman and Ashburton. Little Athletics WA also hosted Officials Education, Coaching Clinics, Community Clinics and school events reaching across the community; • 2019 LAA Role of Excellence. Brad Hardie (sportsperson) and Bob Chalmers (volunteer) were inducted to the Little Athletics Australia Roll of Excellence; • 2019 Coles Junior Athletics Carnival. Ern Clark Athletics Centre was the host to a junior event aimed at the U6-U9 age groups and including siblings in the Tiny Tots group; • 2019 State Track and Field Relay Championships Presented by Go 2 and 5. Over 3000 athletes forming 677 teams, from U8-U17 competed in the state championships which for the first year included the opportunity for mixed track and field relay events in addition to both the girls and boys teams; • 2019 RAC Sport West Awards. With over 50 years of volunteering across the sport of athletics, Bob Chalmers was awarded the
Roobix Service to Sport Award-May Campbell Medal; • 2020 Country Championships. The first State event of 2020 was hosted by Margaret River Little Athletics season, with representation from all 17 regional Centres. This is a significant achievement noting the large distances many travel to participate. For the first time, the Country Championships were open to registrations from athletes in open competitions. We look forward to increasing participation in future years. Officials Education, Coaching Clinics, Athlete training and education and Tiny Tots sessions were also conducted. Thank you to Hon Mick Murray MLA for attending. • 2020 State Combined Event Championships Presented by Go 2 and 5. The multi event competition was conducted in February with 275 athletes from U11 to U17 competing. We also welcomed a small team of athletes from Singapore Sports School who travelled to compete against WA athletes; • Zones Championships. In mid-February, just over 2000 athletes competed in the Zones Championships in a bid to qualify for State Championships; and • 2020 State Track and Field Championships. Unfortunately, due to the increasing health risk and based on medical advice, a decision to cancel the State Track and Field Championships was made. We wish to acknowledge the 1472 athletes who qualified and entered the event.
It is concerning to report that Little Athletics registrations continued to decline for the third year in a row, despite strong participation in community events and increasing community engagement. This is a challenge the sport must continue to address; to be innovative and to adapt to the changing community priorities and demands. A review of our memberships model will greatly assist us to provide flexibility for our membership in the future.
LAWA 2019/2020 ANNUAL REPORT / 9
Although we may have concluded the 2019/2020 competition season abruptly, we should not let this overshadow our successes. The world has changed and will continue to do so, as has our concept of ‘normal’. We need to look past ‘how we have always done it’ and create new and exciting opportunities for the future. Change should not be viewed negatively, but rather a platform upon which we can steer new and exciting paths with increased opportunities and engagement across the whole of sport. Out of adversity, we need to continue to seek opportunity.
I wish to acknowledge and thank our National sponsor Coles, for their ongoing banana donations and for providing the opportunity for Centres to directly apply for community funding. Assistance of nearly $40,000 was received by 9 Centres across WA to purchase much needed athletics equipment including high jump mats, hurdles, line marking machines and more. Coles also piloted the Athlete and Volunteer of the Month Award in WA during the season. Nominations were sought from our members and winners were awarded a $50 Coles voucher for their contribution to the sport.
All award winners were eligible for the end of year award where the successful recipients received a trophy and $500 Coles gift card. The awards highlighted and rewarded the tireless effort that so many of our Little Athletics volunteers contribute within our community. Thank you for all your support.
I would also like to make special mention of Little Athletics WA major partner, Healthway, Go for 2 and 5. Their support of our community in Western Australia has been truly invaluable throughout the year and continues to make a different to the positive health choices for our members across the sport.
To our key partners and stakeholders including Landmark, ISC, Keep on Running, Travel and Sports Australia, Australian Financial Solutions Group, Worldwide Printing, Nutrien Ag Solutions, Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, Rocktape, Aussies in Action Sports Photography, Tottle Partners and Nordic Sport; thank you.
Our successful achievements over the past 12 months would not have been possible with the motivated, dedicated and passionate staff. Capably led by Vince Del Prete, the team of Emma, Jake, Danny, Rebecca, Debbie and Heather transitioned to the One Management Team at the WA Athletics Stadium. Vince was successfully appointed as the One Management Team CEO, where the team were joined by Wayne, Stephen, Nathan, Lyndsay, Savannah, and Sharon. I wish to thank and acknowledge the extended services of Wayne and Stephen to the sport and wish them both well in their future endeavours.
Finally, to the Little Athletics community, athletes, coaches, officials, administrators and volunteers, thank you for all that you have contributed to support the sport and to provide the ongoing opportunity for thousands to participate each week. I sincerely thank you all. You should be proud of the contribution you have made to achieve collective success as a sport and to achieving the historic transition to a unified sport providing greater opportunities to all.

2019 – 2020 INTRODUCTION TO COACHING COURSES
COCOS KEELING ISLANDS REGIONAL TRIP
In November 2019, Athletics in WA visited the Cocos Keeling Islands to provide the
youth on both West Island and Home Island, with the opportunity to participate in athletics activities. In total, Athletics in WA delivered three come and try community athletics sessions to over 75 individuals and two full days of athletics sessions in schools to 85 students.
The participants were full of enthusiasm and enjoyed giving all events a go, with some individuals attending as many as three athletics sessions across the visit. Their eagerness to take on coaching tips and ability to pick up skills very quickly, meant that many children made great improvements to their athletics skills in a short space of time.
Attendance in the come and try community sessions was excellent, with one session on Home Island attracting approximately 50 participants, which is over 80% of the youth who live on that Island!
With the support of key stakeholders, Athletics in WA will be better placed to increase the profile of Athletics across regional and remote WA, as well as expand the reach and diversity of the programs it delivers. Athletics in WA would like to thank the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and the Community Development team at the Shire of Cocos Keeling Islands for making this trip possible.
LAVERTON REGIONAL TRIP
In December 2019, Athletics in WA visited Laverton in the Goldfields-Esperance region
of WA to deliver free school and community programs to the town and residents. The trip was funded by the local Laverton mining companies, AngloGold and Minara, and arranged by Martin Seelander, CEO of Pakaanu Aboriginal Corporation.
The community were very excited for the visit with Athletics being one of the most popular sports in Laverton! Students in Laverton have the opportunity to train and compete in athletics at their school oval, as well as the opportunity to attend Eastern Goldfields LAC competition meets in Kalgoorlie on a Friday night for those
who demonstrate commitment and attendance in both school and training. The visit saw 60 students participate in school clinics and after sschool community sessions across the three days, with many students eager to improve across all athletics events.
Members of the community also had the opportunity to participate in a free coach education session. Eight members of the community gave up their evening to attend, leaving with a fundamental understanding of Athletics to pass on to the wider community.
A big thank you to Martin Seelander and those who made this trip possible.

2019 MALAYSIA TOUR
The Little Athletics Tour of Malaysia was a huge success with 55 athletes and 5 Team
Leaders representing Little Athletics WA during this event.
We had some incredible results achieved during the 2 days of competition with many medals being won by almost all athletes in attendance. Little Athletics WA did exceptionally well in both relay events with many double podiums.
2019 was a unique travel experience much like 2017 as the team first landed in Kuala Lumpur then jumped on another plan to Kuantan where the competition was held and following the competition we jumped on a plane again and headed back into Kuala Lumpur where we would spend the next few days sightseeing and going on many adventures to the Indoor Theme Park, Batu Caves, Water Park and many other exciting venues.
We had a fantastic bunch of athletes on this trip which included under 14s, 15s and 16s and I would like to congratulate them on the great behaviour they displayed during the entire trip, it always makes these trips more enjoyable for everyone involved when the athletes are a delight to work with.
A big thank you to the 4 Team Leaders who accompanied the Program Coordinator, Jake Trewin on this trip which included Teresa Blackman, Fiona Brown, Rachel Trent & Shane Klopper.
Below you will find reports from one of our Team Leaders Rachel Trent along with a report from two of our Under 14 athletes, Skye Bowron & Emma-Lee Grundy.
2019 MALAYSIA TOUR TEAM LEADER - RACHEL TRENT
On Your Marks...
I was very excited and extremely thankful to receive an email confirming the amazing opportunity to be one of five team leaders on the 2019 LAWA International tour to Malaysia. This was going to be an amazing experience for all involved.
Get Set...
Leading up to the departure date we had training sessions, bonding activities and a presentation ceremony all of which the athletes’ participation level was 100%. This was a great opportunity to meet the wonderful and equally excited, parents and families of the delegation plus to get to know the athletes in our teams and letting them get to know us. It was lovely to see the pride in the parents and families at the presentation ceremony but also to see the pride the athletes had in themselves. The team leaders (Teresa, Jake, Fiona, Shane and myself…. Rebecca) have a vast amount of experience and knowledge and it was great to re-assure the parents that they were in good hands.
Go...
And just like that, Sunday the 7th of July was upon us and we were flying out for Kuantan. The flight was full of chatter from the athletes due to excitement but also nerves. As we
were pulling up to the amazing Kuantan hotel the athletes spotted Starbucks – I am sure Starbucks has not had a profit spike like that since we left! Acclimatisation, track familiarisation and hydration were the most important factors over the first few days as the humidity hit you like a tonne of bricks. The athletes were quick to get over this hurdle and adapted very well (and were probably sick and tired of us nagging them to hydrate ALL the time)! The competition saw the athletes face some strong competition from Singapore and Malaysia, but they came away with a huge amount of success, not only on the track but off as well. This group of athletes never quit – they never gave up and they were super supportive of their fellow athletes all cheering and congratulating each other. The friendships that were formed was great to see – not only amongst athletes but also the team leaders! One of the highlights for me was seeing our athletes integrate with the athletes from Singapore and Malaysia and doing what kids do…. talk, dance and swap social media profiles! With all the uniform swapping it brought the two-day competition to a close with fatigue starting to set it – the athletes were exhausted as well! The second part of the trip saw the delegation fly to Kuala Lumpur and experience adventures they never have but will remember forever with the Royal Selangor Pewter and Batu Caves, Aquaria KLCC, Petronas Towers,

Some of the athletes will make it big in the business world with their negotiation skills – some showed their competitive streak when it came to bartering! I am not sure how some were not charged excess baggage charges on the way home.
It was great to see everyone embrace the culture and the new experiences along the way and to get to know the athletes as themselves, not in competition mode! There were so many laughs to be had along the way – I do recall at least 4 times I was doubled over, laughing for different reasons. I look forward to not only hearing about these athletes’ future success but seeing them compete at future state events and picking up where we left off. I wish them all the very best for the future! Thankyou again to LAWA for giving me this amazing experience and many great memories!

ATHLETES – SKYE BOWRON & EMMA-LEE GRUNDY
We were so excited to hear the news that we had been selected to represent Little
Athletics Western Australia in Malaysia at the International Athletics Competition.
Before we left we had some training sessions as well as some activities to get to know the other Athletes we would be travelling with. We knew some of them from Zones and States but this way, we made friendships before we even left Perth. We went to bootcamp, kayaking and some training sessions at the Stadium.
Our plane left Perth after midnight and we landed in Malaysia first thing in the morning – the views were breathtaking. The Athletics Competition was an experience of a lifetime. We raced against athletes from Singapore and Malaysia and by the end of the Comp we were all friends and were swapping shirts and souvenirs. We enjoyed the relays the most, we were so proud to be representing our State.
After the Comp we did a lot of shopping and sightseeing. The shopping was amazing, it was so different to what we have in Perth. During the day we stayed in groups and by the end
of the trip we were all great friends. We tried a lot of Malaysian food, some of it was quite spicy but we didn’t mind. The weather was very different to Perth, we left in the middle of winter and arrived to a very humid, warm 36 degree climate. It was certainly a shock for us!
Seeing the sights of Malaysia was very memorable for us. We went to the Petronas Towers, the Batu Caves, the Genting Highlands (the cable cars were so cool), the Aquaria, Snow World, the Royal Selangar Pewter Factory where we made a souvenir to take home with us, Sunway Lagoon and so many other places.
Travelling to Malaysia with LAWA was an awesome opportunity for us. We had so many new experiences and we did everything together as a Team. The views in Malaysia were fabulous, the food was delicious, and we will never forget our time over there. We made so many new friends from other Centres in WA and we still keep in contact now, even months after we got back, we can’t wait to see them again at State Relays!
I was fortunate enough to be selected to attend this training camp held at the AIS. I came away after 3 days with a lot more knowledge on athletics than before and some new friends.
At the beginning of the day we first had training with some professional coaches from around Australia at the track. The coaches
were approachable and explained why we were doing certain exercises. I learnt a lot from them especially some cool tips on my running technique. They also some effective exercises and drills to do to help this. Because I am a middle-distance runner, the training that we did was quite hard to say the least.
2019 COLES LAA UNDER 15 AIS CAMP
The live-in camp is designed to provide elite coaching and active participation in athletics. Situated
at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra, we are able to take full advantage of these
world class facilities. With coaching sessions planned each day, athletes will be able to enhance
their performance in their chosen event and improve their general fitness. Workshops will be held
on various topics such as strength & conditioning, social media, stretching; there will also be guest
appearances by senior elite athletes.
CAMP REPORT FROM ATHLETE LAURA STUMP
LAWA 2019/2020 ANNUAL REPORT / 23
In the afternoons we all went to different workshops around the AIS. These were either stretching, strength and conditioning, injury prevention and the hot and cold recovery baths. I would have to say that the hot and cold baths were my favourite because they made my legs relaxed after the hard training we had done before. What I found interesting was the importance of eating meat after exercise to help repair the muscles, the rest of the food was really good too.
Towards the end of each day we went to a conference. Here we had the privilege to meet Glynis Nunn, an Olympic gold medallist in the heptathlon. She was actually running the camp. She told us all about her history as an Olympian and how she got to be one. She actually sat diagonal to me on the flight from Sydney to
Canberra! We also got to learn about the lives of other Australian Athletic Olympians. They shared their experiences, good tips on how they prepared for their event and a few good laughs.
Going away with a small team meant that everyone got to get to know each other and we all became good friends. We definitely shared some good laughs and being together which made the whole experience a lot better.
20 19 – 2020 OFFICI A L S EDUCATION IN WAWAAOC were again appointed by LAWA
to the role of Officials Coordination/Education for the 2019 – 2020 Summer Season.
In September before the season commenced three Spring Education sessions were presented at Dept. Of Sport and Recreation training rooms. These sessions were presented by several members of WAAOC and were well attended and proved invaluable to participants as the season began.
During the first three months of the Track and Field season members visited various centres to give support to Centre management and provide education and information to volunteer officials. Centre visits included Swan Valley, Inglewood, Peel, Ridgewood, Bayswater, Northam, Dale, Melville and Kingsway.
Several follow up visits were made to centres needing more time and support with one of these being Swan Valley.
A full theory and practical seminar on walks was presented at Cockburn at their invitation and encouragement is given for more centres to be as proactive as this centre.
Specialist seminars in Track, Jumps and Throws at Level 2 AAOES were also presented at the main stadium, with some participants then going on to gain practical experience at AWA competitions.Over the second half of season, opportunities were taken up by various members in the operation of Meet Manager and Photo Finish, adding to the multi skill level of officials for the sport.
Through Social Media and direct email WAAOC provided online quizzes and training tips which were pleasingly embraced, and it is intended for this to be a regular part of ongoing Education. Opportunities and Athletics information is regularly provided via the WAAOC Newsletter produced and available online.
A team of two was provided to attend and assist in the management of the North West Championships in Exmouth. Onsite education was provided to the volunteers running the event and officiating knowledge in the North West continues to grow.
WAAOC provided a large management team to assist and support Country Championships in Margaret River and provided the opportunity for all country officials to learn and develop at onsite competition. To extend Education opportunities this year multiple Field referees were appointed, and umpires trained for track events. A full Call room was in operation providing education in the running processes for athletes and volunteer officials.
A management team was also provided for the State Track & Field Relays and the State Combined Event Championships.
LAWA 2019/2020 ANNUAL REPORT / 25
A team was in full readiness for State Track and Field Championships when they were abruptly cancelled due to the Coronavirus epidemic.
A number of members took an active part in Zone Championships and visits were made by members to the various Zones to support competition. In several zones WAAOC members worked as officials and managers.
The club’s Junior officials program continued with several participating at LAWA State Events as well as gaining valuable experience at the Perth Track Classic. We also had one participate as an umpire in Margaret River.
WAAOC also promoted a number of LAWA officials to nominate for the Athletics Australia Jandakot Airport Perth Track Classic and this added to their development.
WAAOC continued to support LAWA competitions and officials more than just at summer events. After our first year managing the Winter Cross country and Road Walking during season 2018 - 2019 we were looking forward to a second Winter until the season was halted due to health risks. The intention of taking on this role is to not only manage but also support host centres and provide onsite education at Out of Stadia events. WAAOC also intends to host some Out of Stadia events to assist other clubs and centres with set up and management knowledge.
It is our aim to ensure there is a large circle of experience and event knowledge in WA for both Track and Field and Out of Stadia. We continue to work towards this by providing our support and knowledge while actively working with the administrators of the sport.

LAWA 2019/2020 ANNUAL REPORT / 27
The 2019 Winter Season saw the continuation of the new and improved timetable that
was introduced in 2017 which includes the alternating of scratch and handicap starts for both the cross county & road walking events.
This season also see the appointment of the Western Australian Athletics Officials Club as the Winter Managers for 2019. Little Athletics WA would like to thank all members of the WAAOC Winter Management Committee for all their hard work in organising and managing each event along with the host centre but also for the great work they did in educating officials and parent helpers in out of stadia rules and procedures.
It would not be a Winter Season without our amazing centres that put their hand up to host either a Cross Country event and/or
Road Walking event throughout the season. Your ongoing support to allowing athletes the opportunity to compete is greatly appreciated.A special thank you to the WA Athletics Officials Club who hosted 3 walks events this season to ensure there was an even number of events between Cross Country and Road Walking.
It was great to be able to get a Cross Country event held in Bunbury and see almost 300 athletes take part, it was a great course and well organised by the Bunbury committee.Thank you also to all the athletes, parent helpers, officials, coaches, supporters, and sponsors who ensured the season was a great one.

We once again had the pleasure of having 3 Perth based officials who volunteered their time at the Championships to not only officiate but to also provide guidance and education to the hundreds of parent volunteers out at every site. Thank you to Fiona Brown, Bev McCagh & Dean Smith.
The Championships saw 106 athletes compete in over 250 scheduled events over the 2 days of competition. Competition started Saturday Afternoon going through till sun set and then it kicked off again early Sunday morning, finishing off by midday.
In its second year of existence, the 2019 North West Regional Championships consisting of the Broome, Exmouth, Hedland, Karratha, Newman and Ashburton Centres was held in the beautiful town of Exmouth at the Talanjee & Koobooroo Ovals on Saturday 5 & Sunday 6 October 2019.
Holding the event during the School Holidays allowed for families to further enjoy the beautiful surrounds of Exmouth before and after the event. With over 100 athletes and families staying on average 3 nights in the town.

2019 NORTH WEST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS EVENT PARTNERS
Following on from the successful 2018 event, the 2019 Coles Junior Athletics
Carnival was held on Sunday 17 November 2019 but this time at the Ern Clark Athletics Centre in Cannington. The event was open to all registered athletes in the Under 6 to Under 9 age groups as well as any siblings of registered athletes that are aged 3 and 4, they formed our Tiny Tots group. The event was a fun, entry level carnival which was designed to help educate and train our younger athletes so they can get ready for competition at the WA Athletics Stadium in the years to come.
Athletes were placed in groups based on their age and gender and rotated through 11 stations which included 6 track and field coaching stations covering Sprints, Hurdles, Long Jump, Shot Put, Discus & Javelin. 2 Competition stations which were 100m races and Long Jump as well as 3 Interactive stations which were an Aboriginal Artwork Station where athletes got to paint using their hands on a blank canvas, a St John Ambulance station where they got to walk through an ambulance and speak to 2 paramedics as well as a Healthway Go for 2 & 5 station where athletes got to play healthy games and make their own perfect plate of 2 Fruit & 5 Veg.
In total, 135 athletes participated in this event representing majority of all Metro Little Athletics WA Centres.
Little Athletics WA would like to thank our amazing volunteer coaches for their efforts during this event because without them none of our events would be possible and a big thank you to the 30 Under 15 to Under 17 athletes that assisted us during this event, your assistance was greatly appreciated. Also, a big thank you to Brad Scott and the Committee at Southern Districts LAC for allowing LAWA to use their equipment, your support was greatly appreciated.
2019 COLES JUNIOR ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
2019 STATE TRACK & FIELD RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS PRESENTED BY GO FOR 2 & 5
The State Track & Field Relay Championships was once again the
highest attended event on the 2019 – 2020 Little Athletics calendar and took place on Saturday 14 December 2019 at the WA Athletics Stadium. This event attracted over 3000 athletes in the Under 8 to Under 17 age groups with athletes coming from 17 metro centres and Bunbury LAC.
The 2019 event took place during a week long heat wave in Perth which lead the Competition Team at LAWA to adjust the time table from its usual 10:00am to 7:00pm time period to having 2 separate competition blocks with the 4 x 200m/400m events taking place between 8:30am and 12:30pm with the 4 x 100m Heats and Finals taking place between 3:30pm 8:00pm. This change was made to ensure we avoided as much of the heat as possible in the middle of the day.
We would like to thank all of the athletes, officials, coaches, centre committee members and family members that ensured the new program ran so smoothly, having such a late change to the time table wasn’t ideal but everyone chipped on to ensure it ran as smooth as possible.
Back again for 2019 was the State Track Relay Championships for Athletics WA
that saw a variety of clubs participating in their 4 x 100m, 4 x 400m & 4 x Medley Relays events which were spread out over the 2 sessions. These were a great highlight at the event with many junior athletes getting to watch the Senior athletes in action, once again showing the athletics pathway from Little Athletics to Senior Athletics.
Overall, the competition ran very well despite the conditions and a big thank you must go to the terrific support we are receiving from over 70 volunteer track and field officials throughout the event, who were led by our very capable Competition Directors Fiona Brown and Kylee McVee. Without our fantastic team of official’s events like these wouldn’t be possible. Also, a massive thank you must go to the Centre Team Managers who put in countless hours towards this event in organising teams and the many parent rosters. A big thank you must also go to the hundreds of parent helpers that assisted all throughout the event.
Congratulations to our winning centres in their respective categories, a terrific effort from everyone involved.

2020 COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
For the first time in a long time, Margaret River LAC had the pleasure of hosting the 2020 LAWA Country Championships. Keeping in line with the change of date for last season’s event, the Championships were held at the Gloucester Park Football Oval in Margaret River on the weekend before the Australia Day long weekend in January. This once again meant that for the 2 years in a row we had nominations from all 17 regional centres currently affiliated with LAWA. Holding the event in January also meant that many families could combine their summer holidays with the Championships and travelled to Margaret River a few days early as well as staying in Margaret River post event to visit the lovely surrounding areas.
Little Athletics WA had the pleasure of also hosting the following during the event:
A big thanks must go to the Department of Local Government, Sport & Cultural Industries – South West for supporting these initiatives and making them possible.
We had the great honour and privilege of having the Minister for Sport & Recreation, the Hon. Mick Murray attend our event on the Saturday where he took part in the Opening Ceremony.

We once again had the pleasure of having 8 Perth based officials who volunteered their time at the Championships to not only officiate but to also provide guidance and education to the hundreds of parent volunteers out at every site. Thank you to Fiona Brown, Marion Buchanan, Toni Petts, Bernadette Hennighan, Marie Fitzsimons, Bev McCagh, Jennifer Wheatley & Yvonne Mann.
The Championships saw 350 athletes compete in over 300 scheduled events over the 3 days of competition. Competition started Friday evening with the 400m heats and the finals of the walks as well as the 2nd year of 4 x 100m relays which was a huge hit for the athletes whom usually do not get to participate in these events with LAWA. Saturday started early with competition ceasing at 10am for 30 minutes to
allow all athletes the opportunity to take part in the traditional March past, with Northam Little Athletics Centre adjudged to be the winner by the Minister for Sport & Recreation, Hon. Mick Murray.
Competition wrapped up midday on the
Sunday with Bunbury & Districts LAC taking out the Overall Points Trophy and Denmark LAC taking out the Handicap trophy.
A big thank you to all of the officials and parent helpers over the weekend who helped make the event such a success. We also could not finish without saying a massive thank you and congratulations to Margaret River LAC Chairman Janet Smith who played host to a fantastic championship. Thank you for the mega amount of effort that went into the event.

2020 COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS EVENT PARTNERS
2020 STATE COMBINED EVENT CHAMPIONSHIPS PRESENTED BY GO FOR 2 & 5
The State Combined Event Championships
is traditionally the smallest event on the
calendar but would have to be one of the
toughest events for our athletes competing in
either 5 or 7 events throughout the event. This
season the event took place on Saturday 8 and
Sunday 9 February 2020 at the WA Athletics
Stadium.
This event attracted 275 athletes in the Under
11 to Under 17 age groups with athletes coming
from 19 Metro centres, 3 Country centres, 1 North
West centre as well as athletes from Singapore
Sports School. It was great to see of the athletes
entered that 12 were from our Country/North
West Centres.
For our Under 14 to 17 athletes this event involves
7 events over 2 days of competition with 4 events
on Saturday and 3 events on Sunday, thus
making it a very gruelling event for majority of
these athletes. Our Under 11 to Under 13 athletes
compete in 5 events and as per last year, the
Under 11 to 13 Girls competed on Saturday and
the Under 11 to 13 Boys competed on the Sunday
to help spread out the program which took the
pressure off our fantastic volunteer officials.
The competition was a great success overall
and it was fantastic to see 11 new records
being set over the weekend which is no easy
achievement.
The State Combined Event Championships
was also the qualifying event for the Under 15
athletes to qualify for the Under 15 Multi Event
team to participate at the Coles Australian
Little Athletics Championships in Canberra in
April, so we would again like to congratulate
the 3 male and 3 female athletes that qualified
for this competition.

Thank you to Coles for their ongoing support and provision of gift cards to our winners.
Congratulations to Amy Dennis, Ella Seeley and Neve Bush who each received a certificate

girls are all aged 12-13 and assisted with coaching at Exmouth PCYC each week of the

Erika Porter was the Coles Volunteer of the Month for November. Erika is known as the

and volunteers.
All the January nominees were of very high calibre, making the final decision very difficult.
Two volunteers each received a $25 gift card courtesy of Coles:
Amanda Collins is Kingsway LAC’s Inclusion

athletes, regardless of ability. She spends her
time speaking with athletes and families to
determine how we can support athletes to
participate in the sport. Amanda has organised
a disability Come & Try day, a visit from para

the same time. “We could not think of another

Auditor's Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report
Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial report as a whole is free from materialmisstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor’s report that includes our opinion. Reasonableassurance is a high level of assurance, but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with the AustralianAuditing Standards will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or errorand are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence theeconomic decisions of users taken on the basis of this financial report.
As part of an audit in accordance with the Australian Auditing Standards, we exercise professional judgement and maintainprofessional scepticism throughout the audit. We also:

and perform audit procedures responsive to those risks, and obtain audit evidence that is sufficient and appropriate
to provide a basis for our opinion. The risk of not detecting a material misstatement resulting from fraud is higher
than for one resulting from error, as fraud may involve collusion, forgery, intentional omissions, misrepresentations,
or the override of internal control.

significant doubt on the Association’s ability to continue as a going concern. If we conclude that a material
uncertainty exists, we are required to draw attention in our auditor’s report to the related disclosures in the financial
reporter, if such disclosures are inadequate, to modify our opinion. Our conclusions are based on the audit evidence
obtained up to the date of our auditor’s report. However, future events or conditions may cause the Association to
cease to continue as a going concern.
Evaluate the overall presentation, structure and content of the financial report, including the disclosures, and
whether the financial report represents the underlying transactions and events in a manner that achieves fair
presentation.
We communicate with the management regarding, among other matters, the planned scope and timing of the audit andsignificant audit findings, including any significant deficiencies in internal control that we identify during our audit.
